Recap / Fanboy And Chum Chum S 1 E 45 Lord Of The Rings

Go To

Kyle tries desperately to learn a magic trick that Fanboy refuses to reveal.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: Good magicians never reveal their secrets, especially to someone who's desperate to learn.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Kyle shows up at the Fanlair disguised as Chum Chum, Fanboy becomes suspicious and realizes something's different about him...he's not smiling, and proceeds to tickle him all over.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The lava pit.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When attempting to trade his wand to hear the secret, Kyle says the wand will make the Earth below them bubble like lava. Chum Chum interrupts the trade, asking why they need another pool of lava because they never use the one they already have, causing Fanboy to call the trade off.
  • Costume Copycat: Kyle disguises himself as Chum Chum in order to learn Fanboy's ring trick. He looks exactly like Chum Chum, except with protruding braces and British accent, which manages to fool Fanboy and the real Chum Chum anyway.
  • A Day in the Limelight: This is definitely Kyle's episode, with Fanboy and Chum Chum acting like somewhat Decoy Protagonists.
  • Disney Death: Kyle lands in the lava pit, but is rescued and taken away by the griffin unharmed.
  • Evil Laugh: Kyle lets out one after reading Fanboy's note and planning to disguise himself.
  • Hidden Depths: Fanboy is revealed to be a magician, and practices magic tricks.
  • Idiosyncratic Wipes: When Kyle disappears, his smoke provides the transition to the Fanlair. The fairy he farted up also does the transition from the Fanlair to the park after emitting an Evil Laugh.
  • I Gave My Word: Fanboy takes seriously to the rule that magicians never reveal their secrets, and refuses to tell Kyle the secret to the ring trick no matter what.
  • Lava Pit: Fanboy and Chum Chum have one, but never use it. Kyle eventually falls into it, but survives.
  • Loophole Abuse: The wallet note that Kyle reads says magicians never reveal their secrets, except to their assistants. This gives Kyle the idea to disguise himself as Chum Chum to do so.
  • Morphic Resonance: When Kyle disguises himself as Chum Chum, the only thing he keeps is his braced teeth, which Fanboy doesn't notice. His voice also doesn't change, yet it manages to fool Fanboy anyway.
  • No One Should Survive That!: Kyle finally learns the ring trick but falls into the lava pit as well, leading the griffon to save him unharmed. He would've died if this happened in real life.
  • Oh, Crap!: By Chum Chum when Kyle guesses his favorite snack to prove he's him, and he's correct. Then by Fanboy when he accidentally reveals the secret to the ring trick.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Kyle briefly makes these as Fanboy accidentally reveal the trick's secret.
  • Saying Too Much: While Kyle is dangling over the lava pit, Fanboy accidentally reveals the ring trick's secret to him, causing him to cover his mouth in horror and utter, "Oh, no!"
  • Shout-Out: Guess.
  • Serious Business: Fanboy takes his role as a magician super seriously, and won't tell Kyle anything about his tricks, especially the rings, because it's "the magician's code".
  • Spot the Imposter: In order to prove that the disguised Kyle is not Chum Chum, the real deal asks him, "What's your favorite snack?" Kyle guesses, "Crumpets and a spot of tea?" To his shock, the actual Chum Chum realizes that is his favorite snack and he really is him.
Kyle: Without a scintilla of doubt.
  • Stage Magician: Fanboy is one, "The Great Fantini".
  • Stock Sound Effect: Kyle's line "Come apart, you filthy little...!" when he tries to take the rings apart onstage is used again when Fanboy and Chum Chum find him squeezed into the magic kit.
  • Stupid Sacrifice: Kyle tells Fanboy he would rather fall into the lava pit than learn the ring trick. Fanboy lampshades it.
  • Title Drop: "I truly am the lord of the rings!"
  • Voices Are Not Mental: When Kyle transforms himself into Chum Chum, he keeps his original voice, though Fanboy doesn't notice. Only Chum Chum does, but Kyle manages to fool him.
  • Wham Line: "You'd fall into lava just because you don't know how to rotate your wrist a quarter-turn, then gently pull?!"
