Recap / Family Matters S 6 E 21 Were Going To Disney World

Go To

In this two-part special, Steve scores a free trip to Walt Disney World after becoming a finalist for an inventors' contest, and invites the Winslows to tag along for a family vacation.

Shot on location at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.

Tropes seen in both episodes:

  • Body Wipe: The contest scenes at Innoventions were actually filmed at two separate places: on a studio set, and on-location at the park. The show attempts to hide this by using this type of transition — at the park, an extra walks onscreen and covers the camera, seamlessly hiding the transition from Disney World to the studio set.
  • Falling-in-Love Montage: Combined with a Good-Times Montage; Laura and Stefan go on one massive date around the park, while the rest of the family enjoys the day together, all set to a pop rendition of "Kiss the Girl" from The Little Mermaid (1989). A few of Disney World's attractions are also showcased here, like Splash Mountain, Tomorrowland, and the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater.
  • Fisticuff-Provoking Comment: After Zoralee wins the competition, Oliver angrily calls her a "babbling bimbo". She retaliates by knocking him out cold.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Both of Steve's competitors are brilliant inventors in their own right: Zoralee has an insta-cook microwave, while Oliver builds a suitcase that can turn into a mini car.
  • Hate Sink: Oliver Stengel is incredibly rude and obnoxious, which makes it all the more satisfying when Zoralee punches him at the end. It's really telling when the entire room applauds her for knocking him out.
  • Hostile Hitchhiker: While on the road, Eddie picks up an attractive hitchhiker named India. When they stop by a lake, she convinces Eddie to go skinny dipping with her... leaving him and Waldo distracted while she hijacks their truck. They're forced to hitch a ride to Florida afterwards.
  • Housewife: One of the inventors at the contest, Zoralee, dresses like a typical 50's housewife, complete with '50s Hair and an apron.
  • I'm Going to Disney World!: Steve exclaims this verbatim when he announces the big trip. The episode's title is also a variation of the phrase.
  • Jerkass: Of the three finalists, Oliver is by far the meanest. He insults both Steve and Zoralee, and at the end, it earns him a fist to the face.
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter: Inverted. Myra's mother (played by Michelle Thomas's Real Life mother Phynjuar) makes her first and only appearance in Part 2; she's just as bubbly and dramatic as her daughter.
  • Multi-Part Episode: This is the second episode to be split into two parts, following "To Be or Not to Be".
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: More like "My Significant Other Sense is Tingling". Myra somehow senses that Steve/Stefan has proposed to Laura, and immediately heads to Florida to get her man back.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Laura sabotages Steve's transformation chamber to keep Stefan around, but in doing so, she unintentionally destroys Steve and Myra's relationship, with the two breaking up after he proposes to Laura. Not wanting to live with the guilt, Laura breaks off their engagement and urges Stefan to turn back into Steve.
  • Product Placement: Specifically for Disney's Wilderness Lodge, which opened a year before the episode aired. It's where the family stays for the trip, and some of them even gush about how luxurious it is.
  • Road Trip Plot: For Eddie and Waldo. While the rest of the gang flies to Florida, the guys drive there in Waldo’s truck to save on money. Things quickly go south when Waldo unknowingly drives all the way to Canada.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Eddie and Waldo end up in Canada during their drive to Florida, and later have their car stolen by a hitchhiker. They finally make it to the hotel after hitching a ride on a farmer's jalopy... only to find that the family is already heading home.
Waldo: Boy, Disney World was fun, but I thought there'd be more rides.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Steve spends the majority of the trip as Stefan, due to Laura sabotaging the transformation chamber. This allows the two of them to enjoy a romantic day at the park, culminating in Stefan asking for Laura's hand in marriage.
  • To Be Continued: Part 1 ends this way, after Myra realizes that something is going on with Steve over at Disney World.
  • Vacation Episode: Steve and the Winslows head to Florida for a family vacation at Walt Disney World.
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: Part 1 ends with Stefan pulling off a big, Disney-style spectacle (complete with fireworks) to propose to Laura, right in front of Cinderella Castle. She says yes.
  • Wham Line: Carl gets so enamored with Disney World that, during a ride on the Tower of Terror, he announces to the family that he plans on staying.
Carl: Guys, as head of this family, I have come to decision.
    Harriette: What's that?
    Carl: I'm quitting the force.
    All: What?
Carl: I am selling the house.
    All: What?!
Carl: Yup, we are all moving to Orlando!
