Recap / Family Guy S 18 E 14 The Movement

Go To

When Peter starts coaching for Quahog's minor league baseball team, a bout with oncoming diarrhea causes him to take a knee during the National Anthem...and makes him the face of racial injustice a la Colin Kaepernik.

Examples:

  • The Cameo:
    • Carter needs a new coach, and we see Homer Simpson in the crowd. He refuses to take the job because he's on vacation, much to Carter's disappointment.
    • Stan Smith and Roger appear to tell Meg to shut up, telling her in no uncertain terms that she won't be treated any differently than she is on her show.
  • Circling Birdies: After a tumble down an escalator, these appear over Peter's head. They then get caught in the escalator, being crushed into a bloody mess.
  • Continuity Nod: Brian tweets something offensive, receives backlash, and announces he has to move out again.
  • Double-Meaning Title: "The Movement" can refer to both the movement towards racial justice as well as Peter's bowel movements.
  • Edited for Syndication: Parodied in-universe, as Seinfeld and later The Jeffersons are shown to be absurdly cut down in syndicated reruns (which is Truth in Television, especially for Seinfeld, which is how it airs on TBS). Characters in both shows don't even get to complete one line before the cut to the end credit music.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Peter wasn't protesting anything; he just had to really go to the bathroom at a very inconvenient time. However, he is quick to lap up the praise he receives for his supposed activism.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Lois cautions Peter that all he did was kneel at one game, so it's not like opportunities are going to come knocking on the door. The president of Nike then knocks on the door and offers Peter money for a commercial.
    Lois: FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
  • Moose and Maple Syrup: The announcer at the baseball game refers to "your [national] anthem" before announcing he's Canadian. He throws in a random "aboot" for good measure.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Of all the places to take his vacation, why would Homer choose to spend it in Quahog?
  • The Scapegoat: Carter blames Peter for his minor league team (The Quahog Whooping Scalpers) being perceived as racist.
  • Self-Deprecation:
    • Newly hired as a coach, Peter sends Meg down to the equivalent minors: American Dad!, which she doesn't want to do. He offers The Orville as a compromise, but she'd rather take the first show. We later see her attempting to do the theme song, only to be told by Stan to shut up. She realizes this is just going to be like Family Guy, just with an alien and a talking fish.
    • Seeing the majesty and advancements of Waquahog, Peter asks why this wasn't The Cleveland Show. A disappointed Cleveland remarks this would've been their fifth season premiere had they stayed on.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The third-half more or less references Marvel’s Black Panther movie.
    • At the end, Peter proposes The Hamster Dance as the new national anthem.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Brian compares himself to Dr. King, Rosa Parks, and Nelson Mandela.
  • Take That!: From the Nike representative: "We heard about your protest and we no-heartedly believe that, with your help, we can conflate buying our products with genuine activism."
  • Toilet Humor: Basically the entire episode kicks off because Peter gets diarrhea right before the National Anthem and has to take a knee during said anthem in order to avoid an eruption.
