Recap / Family Guy S 16 E 7 Petey IV

Go To

Peter begins hanging out with Vladimir Putin after buying a Russian dub of Rocky IV. Meanwhile, Brian (who is still holed up in his crappy apartment after the events of "The D In Apartment 23") decides to take a job as a suicide hotline caller, and ends up offending a female coworker after she catches him masturbating to a picture of her online.

Tropes:

  • Affably Evil: Vladimir Putin. He's a corrupt murderous dictator who is hellbent on world domination, but he's more than willing to be friends with Peter Griffin and show him a good time.
  • Breather Episode: After the episode "The D in Apartment 23" where Brian gets kicked out for a racist joke, this episode involves Peter's search for a Russian bootleg version of Rocky IV.
  • Brick Joke: A man shows up at bad times with a million dollar check, first for "chicken" at Peter's house shortly after he says "Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!", and later to Brian just after he leaves his apartment.
    • The man from the "Pass the Jelly" commercial appears at Peter's dinner with Putin. Peter lampshades it.
  • Caught with Your Pants Down: Martha walks in on Brian masturbating to photos of her and her mom. To add insult to injury, they were from her grandfather's funeral.
  • Cold Open: Instead of the title sequence, the episode starts with a Survivor-style recap of the last episode, with the Griffin family proceeding to vote Brian off the island. Complete with Jeff Probst voicing himself.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Putin befriends Peter after defeating him in a hand-to-hand combat.
  • The Dragon: Roger Gooddell, the NFL commissioner, turns out to be working for Vladimir Putin to bring corruption into American politics and entertainment, and that he's a Russian spy who is only posing as an American when Putin decides Tom Brady has to go.
  • The Ghost: Trump doesn't appear, but we see texts from him sent to Putin.
  • Idiot Ball: When Martha won't go out with Brian, Brian decides to masturbate to photos of her online. But Brian does so at work as opposed to going home to do so. Granted, it's after work hours have ended, but he should have thought of the possibility of somebody walking in on him (which of course happens).
  • Lampshaded the Obscure Reference:
    • A cutaway parodies an old Polaner commercial ("Pass the Jelly"). Afterwards, Peter (dressed as a director) recognizes how most viewers won't get this reference and proceeds to compare it point for point.
    • When Putin says he George Brett himself, Peter just advises the audience to Google that reference themselves.
  • Multiple Endings: Parodied In-Universe. The Russian version of Rocky IV changes the ending to Drago effortlessly beating Rocky. It's what gets Peter's plot going.
  • Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!: Peter says this after Putin challenges him to a fight and calls him chicken. Followed then by a guy with a million dollar check for "chicken", leaving Peter conflicted on whether to accept.
  • Person as Verb: "I George Brett myself on plane."
  • Plot Hole: Peter questions the fundamental aspect of the "Pass the Jelly" commercial (everyone acting surprised by the one guy who calls it jelly).
Peter: All right, now, what I don't get is, if they know this guy, why are they surprised by the way he talks? Right? And if they don't know him, why is he at the table?
  • Russia Takes Over the World: Vladimir Putin wants this to happen, and he's slowly succeeding. He can control US election affairs and the NFL player line-ups with the push of a button at home. Only Peter Griffin stands in his way... for the latter.
  • Self-Deprecation: Russia has everything a tiny bit worse entertainment wise. Leading to...
    Peter: You got The Simpsons?
    Putin: We have Family Guy.
  • Sexiness Score: On the car ride with Putin, Peter notes that all the women in Russia are nothing but "tens and ones". After rating a few ladies on the sidewalk (with "wow"s and "woah"s), he is "woah"ed by one lady.
  • Shout-Out: The episode's title is a reference to Rocky IV. Peter and Putin ultimately have a fight patterned after Rocky and Drago's.
  • Story Arc: Continuing the storyline of Brian having to live with the consequences of posting an inflammatory social media post to Twitter.
  • With Friends Like These...:
    • The family hasn't bothered keeping in touch with Brian since he moved out in the previous episode and have even apparently been ignoring his phone calls.
    • Parodied after the boxing match. After they appeared to work things out, Peter says Putin poisoned him.
  • Worthy Opponent: Putin wins the first fight against Peter with the help of his aides, but he respects Peter for not backing down.
