Recap / Family Guy S 14 E 16 The Heartbreak Dog

Go To

Brian throws a wrench in Bonnie and Joe's marriage when he makes out with Bonnie at her 46th birthday celebration. Meanwhile, Meg gets hooked on stealing from the old folks' home after the woman she volunteered to help treats her poorly, and Chris wants in on the heist.

  • The Alcoholic: Seamus is offhandedly revealed to be one, since Peter alludes to Staging an Intervention for him that failed, with Seamus throwing an empty beer bottle through the window and claiming that "[he] ain't changing for nobody".
  • Artistic License – Biology: Bonnie is annoyed by Brian’s panting, to which he says that panting is how he sweats. Bonnie claims that he’s wrong and that dogs sweat through their paws. It is true that dogs sweat through their paws, but panting is the primary method by which dogs cool off as it gets rid of excess body heat. So while neither Bonnie nor Brian are entirely right, they’re not entirely wrong either.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Joe pulls some major pranks against Brian.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Sure, it was kind of a dick move on Brian's part to kiss Bonnie, but Joe then proceeds to make his life miserable, most notably by shooting him in the toe late in the episode, even after Brian had apologized for what he'd done.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Quagmire argues that while he indeed thinks Brian's a dick, he also believes Bonnie is a slut that tacitly aims for attention from other men. Of course this is Quagmire we're talking about.
Quagmire: *oggles Bonnie's breasts* OOH, GIMMIE SOME OF THAT!
  • Hypocrite: One of the people at Brian's intervention who chews him out for kissing Bonnie is Quagmire, the same guy who created an affair of his own between Cleveland and his first wife Loretta and tricked Joe into letting him have sex with Bonnie in "April in Quahog".
  • Karma Houdini: Twice this episode.
  • Older Than They Look: Briefly joked about; Joe says Bonnie is turning 29 this year, when she's actually 46 (though she does look younger than that).
  • Series Continuity Error: Joe claims in the episode that he has a birth video of Susie. This however contradicts the episode “Oceans Three And A Half”, which shows Susie’s birth as none of the characters who were witnessing the event were seen holding a camera.
  • Staging an Intervention: The group holds one for Joe to get him to lay off Brian. However, it quickly veers off course: Cleveland is indifferent to Brian's suffering, Peter admits to hating Brian on some level for wanting to sleep with Lois, and Quagmire trashes both Brian and Bonnie. After it escalates into an angry Brian and Bonnie running off together, we learn this was actually the group's second failed intervention today.
Seamus: [throwing a bottle through the window] I ain't changin' for nobody!
  • Ungrateful Bastard: The old woman Meg volunteers to treat is bluntly insulting to her every opportunity she gets, to the point Meg decides to retaliate by robbing her.
