"You must trade for the egg, greasy Ed-boy!"

The Eds need eggs for their omlettes, so they turn to Rolf, who'll only trade them the egg. No sooner do the Eds agree on this than they find themselves having a Chain of Deals.

Tropes

  • Artistic License – Biology: The egg the Eds buy has an unfertilized yolk, meaning even if Ed hadn't ruined everything, they never would have hatched a chicken out of it.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Jonny just happens to show up with a bucket full of clams after sewer diving, just as the Eds were looking for some to trade with Jimmy. Double D acknowledges how awfully convenient the timing is.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Ed's yo-yo winds up being the thing to complete the chain.
  • Chain of Deals: The Eds want an Egg from Rolf. Rolf would only be willing to give them one if they get him some sawdust. They try to get sawdust from sawing logs, but Jonny stops them and eventually tells them to get it from Kevin. They try to get the sawdust from Kevin, but he'll only let them have it if they paint his shed. Only problem; he doesn't have any paint. They go to Jimmy to borrow some paint, but he'll only part with it if they can get him some clams, which... You get the idea. There are several points where the Eds have to double back to some characters in the chain; in fact, it ultimately reaches the point where Rolf is the last person they talk to before they can start completing the chain.
Rolf: So, back again, wanting Rolf's plums, confused Ed-boys? Do you not want my egg?
    [...]
Eddy: (after successfully trading Ed's yo-yo for the plums) Be right back!
  • Crossing the Burnt Bridge: After ruining Jimmy's painting with their earlier intrusion, the Eds are forced to go back to his house to make a second trade. Jimmy is understandably not happy to see them and has kept his door locked in advance.
Jimmy: (looking through peephole) What do you want?
    Eddy: Giant Teddy Bear?
    Jimmy: Plums!
Eddy: (growing impatient) What's with the food!?
Edd: Plums are good for ya, Eddy.
  • Cutting the Knot: The Eds try to do the sensible thing by just sawing a log to get some sawdust, but Jonny ends up stepping in shortly after they start.
  • Derailed Train of Thought: While hunting for clams, Ed forgets what they're doing and thinks he's calling at Eddy's house.
Ed: Can Eddy come out to play?
Eddy: I'm right beside you, Ed.
    Ed: Hi, Eddy!
  • Dope Slap: When Ed destroys all their eggs, Eddy stoically hits him with a frying pan for his stupidity.
  • Fish-Eye Lens: This effect is used when Jimmy is looking through his door's peephole.
  • Kiss Diss: While the Kankers are excited over their "boyfriends" making a surprise visit, Marie calls for a group hug before May declares they kiss them. Ed runs away scared, not wanting to be kissed and dragging his friends with him right as the Kankers leap at them, causing them to miss and kiss the ground instead.
  • Leave the Camera Running: The camera lingers on an overhead shot of the Cul-De-Sac while the heads go door to door scavenging for clams.
Jimmy: (looking through peephole) What do you want?
    Eddy: Giant Teddy Bear?
    Jimmy: Plums!
Eddy: (growing impatient) What's with the food!?
Edd: Plums are good for ya, Eddy.
  • Mundane Object Amazement: When offering Rolf something to trade for his plums, Ed offers him a yo-yo and demonstrates one trick called "walking the dog", which is just him dropping it to the ground. Rolf gives it a try himself and declares he enjoys how simple it is, declaring it to be something his family will tell stories of for generations.
  • Quaking with Fear: Jimmy when he retreats to the corner of a closet with his paints to escape the Eds.
  • A Rare Sentence: Double D's tone of voice implies he's aware of how strange his request is when he asks:
Edd: Could we borrow a cup of... clams?
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: After everything the Eds go through, Ed ends up breaking the egg trying to get the chicken out of the egg.
  • Tongue on the Flagpole: While looking for eggs, Ed sees a popsicle in the freezer and tries to lick it. His tongue gets stuck to the popsicle, which in turn is stuck to the freezer. So when Ed tries to bring the eggs to Eddy, the tongue pulls him back, causing him to destroy all the eggs.
  • Totem Pole Trench: When trying to get an anchor from the Kankers, the Eds dress up in one, with Ed being the bottom, Double D the middle, and Eddy the top. Unfortunately, Ed blows their cover by announcing himself as the legs and causing the whole disguise to fall off. When the Kankers attempt to kiss their "boyfriends" for their surprise visit, Ed runs away screaming, dragging his friends with him.
