Chief King: Congratulations on yet another promotion well-earned <Player's Name> and welcome to the Grimsborough's University!

Two months have passed since the Dog Pageant Contest and your promotion to the University, and after a summer break of only rescuing kitties trapped in trees, you're given your first murder investigation in the district only a week after the students return from their vacation: the death of freshman Rani Goshwalla, tied up in her bikini and left to asphyxiate next to an ant hill.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Murder: According to Misha, she only wanted to humiliate her sister out of envy, so she forced her to drink until she passed out then tied Rani up so everyone would see her fainted in her bikini at morning. Too bad she didn't notice the ant hill next to her.
Misha: I swear to you I didn't want to kill her! I just wanted people to find her like that in the morning...
If I had realized there was an ant hill next to her, I would have never left her there!
  • And I Must Scream: Poor Rani was tied up and left for the ants to slowly sting and choke her to death whilst being conscious the entire time.
  • Ant Assault: The victim was killed by ants.
  • Closet Gay: Josh Anderson is one. He even threatened the victim if she said anything, since she saw him kissing with another boy.
Jones: But why even keep it a secret? There's nothing to be ashamed of.
Josh: WTF, wake up man! Everybody judges you ALL the time! You've got to fit in and pretend you're someone else. If people found out I was gay, I'd lose everything!
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The victim was killed by being tied up next to an ant hill, which combined with the high levels of sugar in her body due to being drunk, made the ants crawl into her ears, nose and mouth until she ended up dying of asphyxiation.
  • Dean Bitterman: Donna Walker, the dean of Grimsborough University, has a special hatred for the members of the school's Psi Sigma Gamma sorority, whom she classes as narcissists and opportunists who only exist to crush others and be congratulated for it. As it turns out, her hatred stems from an incident in her past, back when she was a student at the university—she was the victim of hazing by the members of the sorority at the time, which consisted of forcing her to drink excessive amounts of alcohol that resulted in her being in a coma for four days. What especially angered her was that the dean at the time did nothing to punish the sorority members for the incident.
  • Fangirl: Tess Goodwin towards you.
Tess: OMG! I can't even believe I'm talking to the living legend <Player's Name> right now! I've followed every one of your cases, you're like a cop superstar!
  • Force Feeding: Or more like force-drinking. The victim was tied up and forced to drink champagne with a funnel until she passed out before being tied up next to the ant hill.
  • Foreshadowing: After you arrest the killer, Jones tells you that there's a concert at the Grimsborough University Concert Hall and you should go check it out.
  • Fratbro: Josh Anderson, who brags about sleeping with the victim in a viral video and encourages his fellow bros to follow "the fresh meat before it spoils." Jones considers him an absolute douche, though you later learn that this is just a facade as he's actually a Closet Gay.
  • Gilligan Cut: After Chief King promotes you to the University.
Chief King: It's the perfect opportunity for you to take things easy and enjoy some well-deserved downtime.
Jones: You heard the Chief, <Player's Name>: we're finally going to have some time to relax!
Jones: Ugh, I was really looking forward to a bit of peace and quiet... but if we get one more call to save a kitty stuck up a tree, I'll go mad!
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Misha towards her little sister Rani, which unfortunately led up to Misha accidentally killing her in an attempt to humiliate Rani.
Misha: I didn't mean to!! It all started because of Madison! She phoned me up last night after Psi Sigma Gamma organized their hazing initiation!
Of course Rani passed all their tests with flying colors and Madison couldn't shut up about how Rani was soooo much cooler than me!
How could I NOT be mad?! Ever since we were kids, Rani has always strived to be better, prettier and more popular than me. She lives to make me miserable!
  • Initiation Ceremony: Psi Sigma Gamma sorority is (in)famous for its hazing and entrance ceremonies, which makes her president a prime suspect as the victim was apparently killed during one.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: After you help Madison recover her especial pen someone stole during the Additional Investigation:
Madison: Sorry, I mean she was probably just a lost sister looking for attention? A jealous traito-... treasure! She was jealous of this treasure! I'll make sure she gets the puni-the other purple pin I have!
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Madison Springer, the president of the Psi Sigma Gamma, is actually quite nice if only a bit pompous.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Tess Goodwin, the criminal psychology student you meet during the case, is absolutely thrilled about a murder happening on campus and even asks if you she can join you during your investigation. Jones naturally turns her down.
  • Not Now, Kiddo: After Alex tells you that an online video (which contains a clue) has gone viral on campus, Jones tells him that they don't have time for "funny videos."
  • Shout-Out:
    • The Campus Lawn has a Portal reference with a Blue Portal and Orange Portal findable, complete with a person running in one and out the other.
    • In the Auditorium scene, there is Mario's cap, albeit with a P instead of an M.
  • Time Skip: A two-month one between Case 31 and this one.
  • Valley Girl: Madison Springer, president of the Psi Sigma Gamma sorority, talks like this.
  • Wild Teen Party: Rani was in one organized by the Psi Sigma Gamma sorority, which led to her death.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Throughout the case, Misha Goshwalla seems absolutely devastated by her sister's death. And even if it's genuine remorse, she was still the one who killed her, albeit accidentally.
