Recap / Crazy Ex Girlfriend S 3 E 12 Trent

Go To

Just as Rebecca tries to be more realistic and practical, Trent throws a wrench into her plans; Josh and Valencia reckon with their shared history.

Songs

"Buttload of Cats"note  (sung by: Rachel Bloom)

  • Birds of a Feather: Two lonely cat ladies — the saleslady and a customer — leave to bond over their cats.
  • Bonus Material: The post-song scene (the last 30 seconds in the YouTube video) was taken out of the actual episode. No Animals Were Harmed because the cats are puppets.
  • Cats Are Mean: Mentioned by the puppet cats, who point out that they're not exactly ideal housepets.
"The ironic part is, we're not that friendly
If you're lonely, we might make it worse
Also we sleep, like, sixteen hours a day
    "
  • Crazy Cat Lady: The song is all about this stereotype — an unmarried woman will eventually come to own a buttload/fuckton of cats.
    "When you're a permanent bachelorette
It's mandatory that you go out and get
    A buttload of cats!
    "
  • Pastiche: Per Word of God, to Randy Newman.
  • Really Fond of Sleeping: It's mentioned that cats sleep like 16 hours a day.

"I'm Just a Boy In Love" (sung by: Paul Welsh)

  • Call-Back: A genderflipped reprise of the season two theme song.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: The lyrics are unchanged from the season two theme song, and are still all about how "love" is an excuse for questionable actions.
  • Overly Long Gag: Like the original song, Trent's smile after he "BLAM"s through the hearts are held for a bit too long to make it even more manic.

"Back in Action" (sung by: Rachel Bloom and Donna Lynne Champlin)

Tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: “So if we move in together you’ll stop sleeping with Rebecca Bunch?”
  • Bait-and-Switch: The months Trent spent in hospital in a cast were some of the most painful of his life. Oh, not because he was healing from at least a hundred fractures, but because the doctor was practicing bad stand-up on him.
  • The Big Board: Trent's got one for tracking Rebecca's movements in what's basically his Rebecca stalker cave.
  • Blackmail: Trent blackmails Rebecca with her attempted hit on Mona.
  • Chekhov's Boomerang: The hit Rebecca tried to put on Mona via the dark web. She did cancel it and no one was hurt, but Trent was aware of it and threatens to tell the police if she doesn’t get back together with him.
  • Geeky Turn-On: Rebecca apparently loved Harry Potter dirty talk with Nathaniel. White Josh is unimpressed.
  • Look Both Ways: Trent relates that he was distracted by the sound of a train...before being hit by a bus, breaking nearly every bone in his body.
  • Panty Thief: Trent has been stealing Rebecca's underwear for a while.
  • Robinsonade: Trent escaped from the hospital and was taught to survive in the desert by coyotes for a few months. Later subverted when Rebecca realizes 'coyote' is slang for 'smuggler'. Maybe. It's never really clarified, and honestly, both versions would make perfect sense considering Trent.
  • Shout-Out: Janie wanted her party to be like Riverdale, not The Roaring '20s.
  • You Just Told Me: Mona uses this on Nathaniel to confirm her suspicions of his infidelity.
Mona: So if we move in together, that means you'll stop sleeping with Rebecca Bunch?
Nathaniel: How did you know I was sleeping with Rebecca?
Mona: I wasn't sure, but thank you, now I am.
