Recap / Castlevania 2017 S 2 E 3 Shadow Battles

Go To

We open to yet another flashback, as Hector recalls his childhood and more specifically how his parents (and most other sane human beings) weren't quite comfortable with his hobby of reviving dead pets. A further flashback reveals that he agreed to work for Dracula on the condition that humanity is subject to a cull (with the survivors treated as livestock), instead of a complete genocide.

Trevor joyfully recognises the tree he used to play in as they near the remains of the Belmont estate. It's made clear that his childhood was quite happy... at least until he turned 13 and the church turned on the Belmont family. He's able to open the door to the vault in the ruins of his family home with the help of Alucard and Sypha, and the three of them enter. Sypha and Alucard (who's less than impressed with the collection of vampire skulls on display) quickly go about searching for information, while Trevor joyfully discovers the Morning Star in a chest.

Godbrand takes his complaining to Dracula, and earns a "The Reason You Suck" Speech for his trouble. Carmilla gets her own flashback, and complains she doesn't wish to be at the behest of another "old and mad" vampire like the one who turned her. She suggests that the castle should be moved to Brelia.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: The main trio shares a laugh at the fact that Alucard's childhood was much better than Trevor's, even though, as the latter points out, "...and your dad was fucking Dracula".
  • All of the Other Reindeer: The reason Hector is in favour of humanity being "culled" (as he puts it) is the way he's been shunned for his necromancy hobby.
  • And Then What?: Godbrand reiterates his question to Dracula as to what will happen once humanity is eradicated and vampires lose their food source. Notably Dracula doesn't have an answer, he just intimidates Godbrand into shutting up.
  • As Long as It Sounds Foreign: Discussed and justified. Sypha notes that Belmont isn't a Wallachian name and wonders where the family name comes from. Trevor reveals that the Belmonts are originally from France and Leon Belmont moved the family to Wallachia to hunt Dracula.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Carmilla easily beats Godbrand in a matter of seconds. Though the attack mainly consisted of a surprise kick to the back, with a handy staircase doing most of the work.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Hector is mystified at the fact that people do not like how he resurrects dead animals.
  • Handicapped Badass: Godbrand tells Carmilla his suspicions that Dracula hasn't fed in a while, but even in such a weakened state Dracula would probably emerge as victorious in a one on one fight.
  • Lost Common Knowledge: The knowledge of how to open the secret Belmont vault was lost with the Belmont Clan's death, as Trevor was never taught the secret (the only time he entered the vault, the gate was already open).
  • Manipulative Bastard: Carmilla is trying to ensure Dracula's next attack comes against Braila for some unknown reason.
  • Magical Library: The Belmont family library contains the accumulated knowledge of the Belmont family as well as monster trophies and ancient magical weapons and artifacts.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Trevor finds the Belmont Family's ancestral weapon, the Morning Star.
  • Missing Floor: The Belmont manor has a secret (and enormous) basement that holds all of the family's knowledge on how to fight the creatures of the night.
  • Mundane Utility: Sypha uses her magic to light torches.
  • Noisy Nature: In Hector's flashback at the beginning, we see a trio of Circling Vultures squawking like parrots.
  • Off with His Head!: Carmilla killed the vampire who turned her by tying a noose around his neck and throwing him out of the window, decapitating him with the strength of the pull.
  • Parental Abandonment: Trevor lost his entire family when he was just thirteen (or twelve, or fourteen - he doesn't remember).
  • The Starscream: Carmilla has also figured out Dracula's Suicidal Cosmic Temper Tantrum and implies that she has a plan to oppose him.
  • Suicidal Cosmic Temper Tantrum: Godbrand realizes that Dracula doesn't actually expect to survive the war and it's all an elaborate Taking You with Me on humanity. He's worried that Dracula will take all the other vampires down with him.
  • Trophy Room: The Belmonts' vault also doubles as one, hosting remains of many kinds of creatures - including, of course, vampires, some of which belonged to child vampires.
