Recap / Carl S 5 E 8 The Valentine's Bowl

Go To

Valentine's Day is coming, and Carl and Grace decide to have a bowling night, to which they bring their friends alongside their respective partners. Unfortunately, that means Roxanne has brought Gooper along with her. Meanwhile, Blooper struggles to find a partner and Kylie goes with Dry Bones after Emily breaks up with her.

Tropes:

  • Alone Among the Couples: Dry Bones and Kylie feel this way due to Talia being away in the case of the former and Emily having broken up with her in the most cruel way possible in the case of the latter.
  • Alpha Bitch: Shelby accuses Roxanne of this when Blooper tells her their relationship is not going to work.
  • Attention Whore: It seems that the only reason Shelby calls herself lame and a loser is so that others will pay attention to her.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Blooper and Roxanne at the end of the episode.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Downplayed on Emily's side because of her aggressive actions towards Kylie. Kylie tells Emily that she kissed Tucker after cheering him up at the Christmas Party because she thinks telling her about what she did was the right thing to do (which it was), however, Emily assaults Kylie because of this, not because of the cheating, but because Kylie kissed a man, which Emily considers misogynistic on Kylie's part because she's bisexual and was dating her while she did it. Also, assaulting someone for such reasons out of coming clean is no way to treat someone, which may cause the audience to side with Kylie more.
  • Brick Joke: Emily tells Kylie that she is transfering schools due to their break-up. Near the end of the episode, Emily is seen getting into a bus.
  • Bowling for Ratings: The gang goes bowling for Valentine's Day.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Tucker went around telling many people about what happened between him and Kylie at the Christmas party.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Boo brings his mother as his date to the Bowling Alley.
  • Continuity Nod: In "The New Girl", Kylie tells Emily that Gooper says she has the face of a horse. Here, Gooper insults Kylie by calling her "horse-face".
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Emily shoves Kylie against some lockers and gives her a black eye just because she confessed to her that she made out with Tucker at the Christmas Party.
  • Does Not Like Men: Heavily implied with Emily if her giving Kylie a black eye over her making out with a man rather than cheating on her is anything to go by.
  • A Friend in Need: Dry Bones decided to partner up with Kylie for the Bowling Night because he felt pity for her.
  • Gonk: Shelby is fat, has acne, and also an unbearable personality to boots.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Emily is not angry at Kylie because she cheated on her with Tucker, but rather because she, a bisexual woman, kissed a man while dating another girl, and that that makes her a Female Misogynist.
  • It's All About Me: Shelby makes all conversation topics about her and how "nerdy and unnattractive" she is.
  • It's All My Fault: Kylie thinks Emily dumping and assualting her is her fault.
  • Jerkass:
    • The obvious one is Gooper, who is still blackmailing Roxanne into dating him, makes no effort in trying to enjoy the bowling night while demanding that Roxanne does what he wants, and does nothing but insult her friends (especially Blooper).
    • Shelby makes every conversation topic about how uncool and uninteresting she is and has no consideration for others.
    • Emily big time. After Kylie confesses what she did with Tucker to her in hopes that she'd understand it better than if she found out by herself, she proceeds to assault her and make a biphobic comment about her.
  • Lonely Together: While not in a relationship, Dry Bones and Kylie team up for Bowling due to Talia being in a boarding school in Ocean Side and Kylie having being recently dumped by Emily.
  • Love Triangle:
    • Roxanne and Blooper want to be together, but Gooper is blackmailing Roxanne into dating him and she can't bring herself to tell the others the reason why.
    • There's one of these going on between Oscar, Janie and a boy named Matty, who's apparently dating each sibling behind the other's back.
  • Valentine's Day Episode: The premise of the episode is couples going bowling on Valentine's day.
  • Visual Pun: Emily is both figuratively and literally Put on a Bus.
  • Pair the Smart Ones: Roxanne and Blooper, two of the smartest characters in the show, want to be together. Unfortunately, Gooper makes that complicated.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: "I'm. Not. Going."
  • Put on a Bus: Emily literally gets on a bus and leaves Toad Town at the end of the episode.
  • Valentine's Day Vitriol: Carrie expresses her disdain for Valentine's day, although Sally reveals that she is more angry at the fact that none of the boys in her class gave her a Valentine's card.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gooper gives a rather harsh one to Blooper to the point where he almost starts crying by shattering his confidence.
  • Woman Scorned: Due to what happened last time with Dry Bones and Talia, Kylie decides to confess what happened between her and Tucker to Emily. Emily flips out, shoves her against some lockers, insults her, and gives her a black eye. Then again, it's also implied that Emily is more angry at the fact that Kylie kissed a guy behind her back rather than her cheating on her.
