Fred’s invisibility function on his suit glitches during patrol.
Tropes in this episode include:
- Bad Liar: Fred, desperate to do night patrol despite the risks, was told by his team they aren't going to do it unless "there is a catastrophe". The next day he states there are several catastrophes by showing several videos, all of him poorly disguised as villains, threatening the city. No one buys it.
- Black Comedy: When the rest of the team is wondering how they will save Fred, GoGo suggests they should just get a new Lizard Guy. The rest of the team looks at her for her to admit it was a joke.
- Big Damn Heroes: Just as Fred is about to give himself up, Minimax arrives to fix his chameleon suit so he can escape.
- Continuity Nod: Hiro's cover story for being out in the woods is inspired by Krei's stories of going camping from earlier in the season.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Chief Cruz hates superheroes because his father was killed by one of Boss Awesome's supervillains, which especially hurt because as a child, he had admired Boss Awesome.
- Dramatic Pause: Invoked and parodied. Fred teaches Minimax the art of doing your own narration, including how to pause for dramatic effect. This leads to both saying "Pause" every few seconds while narrating.
- Easily Forgiven: Felony Carl attempts to invoke this, but Honey Lemon encases him in ice so he can serve time for... whatever he did.
- Freudian Excuse: Cruz reveals to Hiro that his father was killed by one of Boss Awesome's supervillains; this led to his grudge against superheroes for attracting villains in the first place.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Realizing that it's his fault the police have the team surrounded, Fred willingly lets himself get arrested so the others can go. Fortunately, Minimax appears to save the day before they can cuff Fred.
- Leaning on the Fourth Wall: When Fred is cornered by the police, he begins narrating his predicament like it's a cliffhanger on a TV show, ending with "Cut to black!" Cue cut to black.
- Monster Is a Mommy: Hiro realizes that the reason Bessie is acting more aggressive than usual is because her cubs are missing. Once he and Cruz find them and return them to her, she calms down and walks away.
- My Sensors Indicate You Want to Tap That: Baymax is able to determine that Cruz and Cass are attracted to each other by scanning them. His attempt to do the same with Hiro and Megan is quickly stopped.
- Never Say "Die": Chief Cruz mentions that his father paid the ultimate price, implying that he died.
- Noodle Incident: Felony Carl is in the same police car as Fred, but why he's there is never explained.Felony Carl: It is an egregious misunderstanding which brings me to this place.
- Shout-Out:
- Fred tries to convince Chief Cruz to let him go by relating this story:Fred: You know, this is just like the scene in Ranger Stranger #233, when the Ranger and the Police Chief realize they both have a mother, so they agree to let all their differences go!
- Chief Cruz's Troubled Backstory Flashback is similar to Batman's origin story: as a child, he went to see a movie with his father, and on their way back, the father was murdered in front of him. Very ironic, as Chief Cruz is the police officer hell-bent on bringing vigilantes to justice and Batman is a vigilante.
- It's also similar to Evelyn Deavor's in that both characters see overreliance on superheroes as the reason their Dads were killed and now believe the world is better without them. While Evelyn became a villain bent on making sure superheroes remained discredited, Chief Cruz became a cop who actually tries to do his part to create a world that doesn't need superheroes.
- Fred tries to convince Chief Cruz to let him go by relating this story:
- Willfully Weak: As GoGo notes, they could fight and defeat the cops to escape, quite easily at that, but it wouldn't be very heroic to do so.
