Concrete Jungle

A look into the lives of the Greens and the Big Citygoers going about their natural and wild selves, presented as a nature documentary.

"Concrete Jungle" contains examples of:

  • Adults Are Useless: After Cricket and Remy's food is stolen by a group of teenagers, the food truck worker does nothing except close the shutters, leaving Cricket and Remy to get the food back themselves.
  • Animal Motifs: As part of the nature documentary spoof, the Greens and other characters often adopt animal behaviors that they normally wouldn't do.
    • Alice thumps her chest the way a gorilla would to show dominance. Several other characters, like the teens who steal Cricket and Remy's food or the bodybuilder going after Bill's eggs, adopt primate behavior.
    • Alice and the construction crew fight by butting their heads like stags or big horn sheep.
    • Gloria rolls a cluster of garbage bags like a dung beetle, and forages through the garbage like a raccoon, with grime around her eyes resembling a raccoon's facial marks.
  • Carrying a Cake: Bill gets some heirloom eggs for dinner, but since the truck won't start, he has to take them to the subway, where a bodybuilder tries to take them, putting Bill on the defensive.
  • Documentary Episode: The episode is presented as a nature documentary observing the natural but wild lives of the main characters.
  • Dumpster Dive: Gloria secretly looks in the cafe dumpsters for things she could claim for herself — in this case, a pair of high heel shoes. She almost gets taken by the garbage truck trying to get them.
  • Formula-Breaking Episode: The series' usual slice-of-life is dived away in favor of a parody of a nature documentary that focuses on Big City as if it were a wild ecosystem.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: The narrator is based on veteran nature film presenter David Attenborough.
  • Use Your Head: Gramma fights the construction workers jackhammering next to her house by putting on a hardhat and fighting them by headbutting them like rams.
  • The Voiceless: Although all the main characters are present, Cricket, Gramma, Bill, and Gloria are the only ones other than the narrator who speak, and Gramma is the only one with more than one line. Tilly, Remy, and the other Big Citygoers do not speak outside of grunts, screams, yells, laughter, and unintelligible chatter.
  • Wildlife Commentary Spoof: A narrator relates the Greens going about their day as if they were animals out in the wild.

Starter Pack

Cricket is interested in Remy's Galaxu trading cards and wants to start his own collection, but when he obtains a rare card that Remy wants, he gets jealous and struggles to cope with it to avoid straining their friendship.

"Starter Pack" contains examples of:

  • Combat by Champion: Cricket and Remy fight over the Starmadillo card the same way they would have in the Galaxu anime and have Gramma and Vasquez fight in their stead like the Mons in the game.
  • Continuity Snarl: In the flashback to their fishing trip in "Axin' Saxon" there's a Bait-and-Switch where Cricket appears to be upset that Remy was instantly better than him at fishing despite his years of practice, but then is shown to actually be happy for him. This contradicts the earlier episode, where Cricket being upset over Remy instantly being better than him was a big part of their subplot.
  • Gotta Catch Them All: Remy has collected all known Galaxu cards, except for the rare Starmadillo card. When Cricket gets one in his starter pack, Remy becomes jealous and tries to take it from him.
  • Phonýmon: Galaxu cards are a clear parody of Pokémon.
  • Spotting the Thread: Wanting the Starmadillo card, Remy asks Gloria to paint over one of his other cards and swaps it out with Cricket's. However, Cricket immediately realizes the card is a fake because he recognizes the card has Gloria's art style with smooth lines and confident strokes.
  • Title Drop: By Remy when he asks Claire to get a pack of Galaxu cards for Cricket.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Gloria gets a massive boost to her self esteem, not only from getting hired by Remy for two commissions but from Cricket immediately recognizing her art style.
