Recap / Ben 10 Ultimate Alien S 3 E 17 Night Of The Living Nightmare

Go To

Ben wakes up in the night to find several foes attacking him, including his friends. But what is really going on.

  • And I Must Scream: Albedo ends the episode trapped in a nightmare of his own making, with only the hope that a Galvan doctor can save him.
  • Bottle Episode: The last episode before the finale, which features only the four regulars, no new models beyond Albedo’s transformations (which is a simple Palette Swap) and takes place entirely at familiar locales.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The smoothie that Ben knocked over in his sleep is what saved his life. Albedo slipped on it and accidentally had the Cassiopean Dream-Eater latch onto his face.
  • Continuity Porn: Several returning characters are present, including a DNAlien. Writer Don McGregor was even given a list of past characters to include, plus two that appeared in episodes that hadn’t aired at the time of writing. He also took the time to consult online profiles for all of them
  • Didn't See That Coming: As Gwen lampshades, Albedo wasn't prepared to have to navigate Ben's trash pile of a bedroom to try to attach the Cassiopean Dream-Eater to his face, resulting in what happens to him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Though Albedo is their enemy, and he attempted to trap Ben in a Lotus-Eater Machine, the trio agrees that keeping Cassiopean Dream-Eater on him is a Fate Worse than Death, and end the episode by trying to contact a Galvan doctor to help him.
  • Foreshadowing: While the Spoiler Title gives away the twist that this is All Just a Dream, there are subtle hints as to whose dream it is:
    • Ben easily defeats the creature latched to his face in a few seconds, and Albedo later pulls out a second creature, identifying it as a Dream Eater.
    • None of the opponents other than Gwen and Kevin that Ben faces speak and Ben’s parents are absent from their house, because Albedo is unaware of what any of them are like.
    • Ben switches from Goop to Ultimate Spidermonkey without first turning into regular Spidermonkey. A function that if it existed, only Albedo would know about.
    • After Albedo reveals himself, Ben suddenly acts far more jerkish and insulting towards him than he usually does. He also becomes an Invincible Hero and points out that the fears making up the nightmare are Albedo’s.
    • Immediately before The Reveal, Albedo states that Ben “must’ve broken free of the Dream Eater” to have such control of the nightmare. Oh how right he was.
    • Remember when Ben nearly slipped on that smoothie after the title? That's how Albedo ended up with that dream eater on his face.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Albedo became a victim of his own dream inducing parasite.
  • It Won't Turn Off: One early sign that something is up is when Ben turns on his TV to calm his nerves, only to be greeted by static, that not even unplugging the box can make disperse.
  • Lotus-Eater Machine: The Cassiopean Dream-Eater is an alien organism that attaches itself to its host and traps them in an eternal nightmare, feeding off the chemicals the brain makes when it's stressed. According to Kevin, it's almost impossible to remove without the help of a Galvan doctor unless you want to rip off the victim's face as well.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Ben starts to notice something off when Vilgax acts like a No-Nonsense Nemesis rather than a Large Ham. His suspicions are confirmed when Gwen concerns herself more with recovering the Ultimatrix than the apparent death of Kevin.
  • Trash of the Titans: Ben's room in this episode is much messier here than it usually is. Ironically, it ends up saving his life, as Albedo's attempts to navigate it result in him slipping on a Mr. Smoothy that had been knocked over and becoming victim to his own Lotus-Eater Machine.
