Roger asks for the Smiths to roast him for his birthday, but when he finds it insulting, he becomes determined to kill them.

Tropes:

  • The Alcatraz: Stan sends Roger to a prison in Thailand that is considered impenetrable. Roger's cell is held underwater while surrounded by mines. Sure enough, Roger escapes.
  • Batman Can Breathe in Space: Roger hitches a ride on the space shuttle without any survival gear.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Roger wanted a celebrity roast, and he got it.
  • Blatant Lies: Roger tells the family that it's safe to get up even while machine gun fire is still destroying the living room.
  • Bowdlerize: The broadcast version bleeps out the words "shit", "cocksucker", "dick" and "fuck", as well as the entire phrase "penetrated him with a strap-on."
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Twice.
    • After surviving Roger's sabotage of their car, Stan looks at the camera and starts describing the safety features of his (fictional) Chevy Tumbler.
    • Steve tranquilizes Roger with a McGregor gun, which he then holds up and advertises to the audience. "McGregor, it's Scottish for 'bullseye.'"
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Roger tries to kill the entire Smith family because they roasted him, even though he actively requested them to do so.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Roger doesn't seem to understand that the point of a roast is to take jokes at your own expense in good humour knowing it's not meant maliciously and tries to kill the Smiths for all their insults. Then gets confused when he forces them to roast each other and they start laughing.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Roger can't wrap his head around the Smiths actually laughing off their roasts of each other despite how scathing they were. Stan his to explain they can laugh it off because they're family and know it's not serious, which leads them to realize Roger took their insults poorly because he doesn't think he's part of their family despite all they do for him.
  • Exact Words: Roger tells the Smiths that "there's no where on Earth he won't find them." This leads Stan to believe they'll be safe on the space station. He's wrong.
  • Eye Scream: Stan pokes Roger in the eye while trying to press a button on his escape pod's control panel.
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: Roger can be seen scolding a hit man he hired to shoot up the Smiths' living room but failed to kill them.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Stan callously abandons his family to Roger, only to immediately get ambushed by Roger himself.
  • Leave the Camera Running: Roger leaves a threatening message on the answering machine, but forgets to hang up afterwards, causing the Smiths to hear him going through an airport gift shop.
  • Moral Myopia: Played for Laughs. The ever catty Roger bawls like a baby after being roasted by the family, later plotting to kill them in retaliation.
  • Orgy of Evidence: Stan frames Roger in Thailand by planting copious quantities of cocaine on his person in order to get him sentenced to a maximum-security prison.
  • Pet the Dog: When Roger traps the Smiths on their shuttle and forces them to roast each other on threat of electrocution, he leaves Klaus alone and even lets him watch the roast with him.
  • Product Placement: In-universe. Chia Pets has started to sponsor the CIA for an experiment of growing plants in space, leading them to change their name to the Central Human Intelligence Agency (C.H.I.A.). This causes a robot agent to resign in disgust.
  • Shout-Out: Roger wearing the sunglasses that cover his eyes and barely reacting during the roast which leads to his heartbroken reaction when he takes the main stage, is almost certainly a spoof of the 2002 Friars' Club Roast of Chevy Chase where Chase reacted the same way following the exceedingly brutal roast as Chase himself barely reacted and just stayed still with his sunglasses and had a similar reaction at the end.
  • Skewed Priorities:
    • After the kitchen explodes, nearly killing the family, Klaus can only ask if they lost the porn channel.
    • Stan makes it to an escape pod and is ready to abandon his family, when he decides he needs more panties for the ride back to Earth. By the time he gets back, Roger has gotten to the escape pod.
  • Take That!: Francine's roast of Stan culminates in her saying he's almost as bad as Rachel Ray. When Stan starts laughing at this, Roger doesn't get it exclaiming "That's just about the meanest thing anyone's ever said to anyone!"
    • Roger says the Smiths rented an amphitheater for Steve’s birthday but Steve replies they merely went to a 4 Non Blondes concert and were the only ones there.
  • Tempting Fate: Stan assures the family that they've heard the last of Roger when he's imprisoned in Thailand. Cue breaking news.
  • This Is Gonna Suck:
    • Stan gets one when he realizes Roger is trying to kill them, and has already cut the brakes in his car.
    • Steve, when Greg and Terry announce breaking news from Asia. He instantly knows Roger has escaped.
  • Thin-Skinned Bully: Roger, often by his own admission, is a bitchy, cruel-witted sociopath. He sobs pathetically at the end of the roast after the family say "mean and hurtful things" about him. To emphasise this, he asked for the roast himself and demanded they pull no punches.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: The Smiths realize Roger doesn't believe he's part of their family even after everything they've done for him over the years, stating if he can't accept he's a Smith then it's his problem and he needs to go fuck himself instead of taking it out on them.
  • Wham Shot: Roger wears sunglasses during the roast. When he gets up to tell his piece, he takes them off... and is crying.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: The third act follows the same plot as Alien.
  • Your Mom:
    • Steve's roast to Francine.
"Mom, you are not smart. I don't tell 'Your mama so dumb' jokes. I tell 'My mama so dumb' jokes. For example, my mama so dumb, I don't tell 'Your mama so dumb' jokes. I tell 'My mama so dumb' jokes."
    • Also happens during Bullock's speech earlier on.
(someone throws a paper airplane at Bullock)
      Bullock: Who threw that?!
      Random agent: Your mother's ass!
