Playing With / The Hecate Sisters

Go To

Basic Trope: Three women who represent the viewpoints of three different stages of life: youth (the maiden), motherhood (the mother), and old age (the crone).

  • Straight: Cora lives with (and learns from) her mother Maia and her grandmother Sophia.
  • Exaggerated: Cora, Maia, and Sophia are different personalities of one person.
  • Downplayed: Cora, Maia, and Sophia are three sisters with a noticeable, but not too significant age gap.
  • Advertisement:
  • Justified: Cora, being a teenager, still has a lot to learn about life, the universe and everything, and what it means to "be a woman." Luckily, she has Maia to teach her. Sophia happens to live with them, and imparts valuable knowledge to both Cora and Maia, thus compensating for gaps in Maia's knowledge, or experience that she doesn't have yet.
  • Inverted: Cora is wiser and more intelligent and responsible than either Maia or Sophia.
  • Gender Inverted: Corey lives with (and learns from) his father Feodor and his grandfather Wes
  • Subverted: Cora only has Maia as a female role-model in her life; she is homeschooled, and Sophia lives out of state.
  • Double Subverted: But she still learns a lot from Maia, besides developing her own sense of self, and a lot of Maia's knowledge came from Sophia (and Maia still talks to Sophia on the phone a lot.)
  • Parodied:
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Cora suffers from Parental Abandonment or is Raised by Dudes
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Maia is Maternally Challenged when Cora is born, and Sophia steps in to help. This pattern continues throughout Cora's life.
  • Exploited:
  • Defied: Maia and Sophia do not speak to one another, and in all honesty Maia would rather go out and party than spend time with Cora anyway.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Played For Laughs: It's part of a Dom Com.
  • Played For Drama: The Generation Gap causes them to argue and fight a lot.
