Playing With / Southpaw Advantage

Go To

Basic Trope: A character's left-handedness gives them an advantage.

  • Straight: One of Ryuji's most notable aspects in terms of fighting is that he fights southpaw; His left hand is much stronger, faster, and has a tighter grip than his right. By comparison, his opponents are almost always right handed.
  • Exaggerated: Ryuji's southpaw nature makes him one of, if not the most powerful fighter in the work. With his godly left hand, he can also wield weapons that are normally meant to be used with both hands with ease, or perhaps even wield weapons that are way too gargantuan to even be considered weapons. In fact, his left hand is pretty much known for delivering outright seismic Megaton Punches at its very weakest; It can cause a Class Z-4 apocalypse at its very strongest.
  • Downplayed:
  • Justified:
    • Being a southpaw is hard to react to because it's a drastic shift from the normally right handed opponents.
    • Ryuji's left hand is naturally stronger, with the bonus of him training it more than his right hand.
  • Inverted:
    • Ryuji's left hand is basically useless. His right hand is incredibly good at everything, however.
    • Ryuji's a right handed person in a world full of left handed people. And as such, he's basically one of the trickiest opponents to fight.
    • Ryuji is a left handed person who fights against a right handed person, and is summarily squashed.
  • Subverted:
    • As it turns out, Ryuji actually prefers to fight right handed against his opponents.
    • Ryuji's only trained himself to fight left-handed; He's actually right-handed.
  • Double Subverted:
    • It's actually him holding back; When things get serious, he pulls the inverse of I Am Not Left-Handed (I Am Not Right Handed) and summarily beats his opponent.
    • Then his right arm gets lopped off, forcing him to do a Situational Hand Switch.
  • Parodied:
    • Ryuji uses his left hand for just about anything. Especially with masturbation, which a lot of people tend to joke about.
    • A character's physical ability and/or fighting skill are completely out of the question when they face a left handed newborn, and not even the Goo-Goo-Godlike kind of newborn.
  • Zig-Zagged: It's really ambiguous whether or not Ryuji's left or right handed (or possibly even ambidextrous), but he often tends to be a switch hitter and keeps changing stances.
  • Averted:
    • Ryuji is right handed.
    • Ryuji is ambidextrous.
    • There's an equal amount of left and right handed people in the work.
    • Being left handed doesn't make one any better against a right handed person.
  • Enforced: Ryuji's actor is left handed, and isn't comfortable with using his right. They decide to Throw It In!.
  • Lampshaded: "This guy's tricky to react to! He's a southpaw!"
  • Invoked: Ryuji, normally either right handed or even ambidextrous, trains his left hand to throw his opponents off.
  • Exploited: Normally done as is; Ryuji's left handedness gives him an advantage against right handed opponents.
  • Defied: Ryuji actively trains his right hand to be even stronger than his left.
  • Discussed: "You think I should be training as a lefty more? I've seen Ryuji do it, and I think it's really giving him an edge."
  • Conversed:
"Yeah yeah, Southpaws are more advantageous, and it may be Truth in Television, but it's so overdone, dammit!"
"Aren't there only so little southpaws in media, though? The only ones that do this trope that I can think off the top of my head are Rocky and that one Filipino guy named Antonio."

  • Implied:
    • Ryuji, who has is not explicitly stated to be left handed or have an advantage over other characters, is notably always fighting with his left side further back, and tends to deal finishing blows with a powerful left hand punch. He's also beaten some of the strongest characters in the work.
    • In the Humongous Mecha work, Ryuji's mecha has a single-shot Wave-Motion Gun as a left arm and a gatling gun as the right arm.
  • Deconstructed: Being a southpaw only gives Ryuji an advantage for so long; People eventually wisen up to the confusion and manage to beat him (sometimes even at his own game).
  • Reconstructed: Ryuji can either do two things:
  • Played for Laughs: Ryuji is given the salacious nickname "Left Hand of Euphoria". Why is this? Because whoever's genitals that Ryuji touches will automatically reach instant orgasm. Be it getting jerked off or fingered, if Ryuji does it with his left hand, then his partner will reach orgasm within seconds.
  • Played for Drama: A Sinister Clue kicks in. Ryuji's stigmatized because he's left handed, as some people call him out on being a possible serial killer; Sometimes, they're only doing so because they're jealous that they can't even beat him because he's a southpaw.
  • Played for Horror:
    • Played for Drama, reaching its logical conclusion where Ryuji snaps and decimates people with a single left handed Megaton Punch, often aiming for the noggin and busting their skull open.
    • The Killer Was Left-Handed, and Ryuji's the only left handed character in the work. He's also the protagonist who's desperately trying to hide his killing spree from people.
