Playing With / Destroying a Punching Bag

Go To

Basic Trope: Hitting a punching bag so hard, it either bursts or goes flying off of the chain.

  • Straight: World Octuple Division (and currently Heavyweight) Champion Flash Young throws his Finishing Move on the heavy bag: A megaton left cross. He punches the bag so hard, it rips open and goes flying off the chain.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Flash punches the bag so hard, his fist goes all the way through.
    • Flash punches the bag so hard, it disintegrates, and whatever was behind it had been reduced to Scenery Gorn.
    • Flash punches the bag so hard, he accidentally causes a Class Z-4 apocalypse.
  • Downplayed: Flash punches the bag, but he didn't put all of his full power in, only resulting in the bag violently bending and caving in while wildly swinging back from the sheer force of the punch.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: Flash is training in Russia, and he hits the bag so hard, that it comes back and hits him in return, laying him on his ass.
  • Subverted: Flash punches the bag... But it doesn't seem to even move an inch.
  • Double Subverted: When Flash turns around to complain about this, the bag suddenly bursts open, with the sudden burst sending it crashing into the wall.
  • Parodied: Flash punches the bag so hard, the other bags do a Sympathetic Wince as the bag violently crashes into the wall and bursts open.
  • Zig-Zagged: Flash punches the bag so hard, it becomes confused as to whether or not it's even dented.
  • Averted: Flash doesn't destroy the heavy bag.
  • Enforced:
    • It's an Establishing Character Moment for Flash that cements him as The Big Guy, even if he's just a 16 year old who's starting out in boxing.
    • Flash's actor was so strong that he really did destroy the punching bag. The director decided to just go along with it, citing to "Throw It In!" and that it was a happy accident.
  • Lampshaded: Alicia, one of the boxers under "Billy's Brawlin' Gym", remarks at how strong Flash is.
  • Invoked:
  • Exploited: Flash does this as one of his intimidation techniques once the news reporters settles in and starts recording; If this is who his opponent is up against, then they've lost all hope.
  • Defied: Coach Billy makes sure to have only the toughest possible heavy bags, and even then he urges his students not to go all out on the bag.
  • Discussed: Alicia, along with the other two gym members Ulysses and Clay (Clay is also Billy's son), all discuss on whether they could actually reach a similar result as Flash.
  • Conversed: "Man, they're gonna need a new bag."
  • Implied: An almost gunshot-like crashing, along with clamoring from the gym members, is heard from Billy's Brawlin' Gym. We don't get to see what actually happened, though comments are made of getting a new heavy bag.
  • Deconstructed:
    • Flash's constant usage of this trope and Billy's repeated purchases due to it swiftly run the gym into the ground.
    • Flash inadvertently makes his gym mates feel weak; There's no way in hell they're replicating his results.
  • Reconstructed:
    • Flash uses the exact same punch he does to use this trope to knock people out clean, earning the gym loads of money. Now Billy can get the toughest bags without worrying about Flash tearing them apart anymore.
    • Flash urges the others to train so hard that they could easily get results similar to him. The road to getting there is long, but soon enough, everyone, even Alicia, manages to get the same results. Clay makes use of his hip and arm twisting to quickly twist his punches and make them stronger, Ulysses learns to "jump" with the punch in a similar fashion to Mike Tyson, Ippo Makunouchi, and other peek-a-boo style users, and Alicia makes sure to get a running start (or rather a dashing start), not to mention swaying around in order to add torque, momentum, and added net force into her punches.
  • Played for Horror: All's fun and games until Flash proceeds to use that exact same left cross on his next opponent.
  • Played for Laughs: Flash punches the bag so hard that flies off the chain, recoils off the back wall, and smacks Flash unconscious.
  • Played for Drama: Before joining Billy's Brawlin' Club, Flash (going by a Secret Identity, Eugene Thompson) was at another gym. The gym was so poor that they couldn't afford to buy more punching bags, and since Flash accidentally tore one open, the gym owner's wife accidentally pricked herself with the needle while stitching the broken bag up. Overall, Flash invoking this trope managed to make things even worse.

Sorry for Destroying a Punching Bag back at the main page. I just didn't realize just how strong I really am.
