Basic Trope: A character tricks another into allowing them to take them someplace unpleasant by telling them they're taking them to someplace they like.

  • Straight: Alice tells Bob that she's taking him on a date to his favorite restaurant, but instead takes him to the doctor for his yearly physical.
  • Exaggerated: ???
  • Downplayed: Bob believes they are going to Disneyland, because they have been planning the trip for awhile. He forget that they were going on vacation on Friday, and today is Wednesday.
  • Inverted: Alice tells Bob that he has to go to the dentist to get a root canal, but actually takes him to see the new movie he's been looking forward to for ages and offers to buy the refreshments.
  • Subverted: They arrive at the doctor's office, but Alice decides they blow off the appointment, and they leave for the restaurant before either of them gets out of the car.
  • Double Subverted: Alice feels guilty during the car trip and covertly makes a sincere effort to take Bob to the restaurant, but her online navigation system reveals the restaurant's closed, and she takes Bob to the doctor via the scenic route.
  • Averted: Alice tells Bob that they are going to the doctor, offering to go to the restaurant once the physical's done as a reward is optional.
  • Defied:
    • Alice thinks over telling Bob that they will go to the restaurant, but she decides that it's not a good idea to lie to her child because that way lies only one (awful) resolution: being disbelieved in a critical moment.
    • Bob makes clear that horrible things will happen if Alice ever lies to him. So she decides to always make clear where are they going when she takes him on a ride.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied:
    • Alice and Bob arrive at the doctor's, and Bob looks shocked to be there.
    • When Alice and Bob return home, Bob's face is not that of someone who had a good time.
  • Deconstructed: Bob eventually decides to distrust Alice in any facts she says, which leads to Alice needing Bob to believe her in something and Bob refusing, makin things more difficult.
  • Reconstructed: Bob is a very naughty kid and the misinformation is part of the punishment. As Alice makes clear, if Bob wasn't such a brat, they would be really going to the restaurant. Bob decides that it's best to behave well in order to prevent Alice from pulling these schemes on him.
