Ibeyi (pronounced "ee-be-ay") is an Afro-French Cuban musical duo consisting of twin sisters Lisa-Kaindé Diaz and Naomi Diaz. Known for their Genre-Busting sound which utilizes their West African and Latin American heritage, they have been critically acclaimed and featured in projects such as Beyoncé's visual album Lemonade.

Come to your river (Trope my soul)

  • Afrofuturism: A sonic variant, in which, despite their songs (particularly on their first record) having been influenced by Yoruba music and spirituality. They are still mainly based in electronica.
  • African Mythology: Particularly Yoruba mythology, given that it's the lineage that their descended from. They have several songs ("River", "Oya", "Eleggua") dedicated to Yoruba òrìṣà (pronounced Oh-re-sha) (spirits / deities) and their name is a reference to the twin òrìṣà that govern children and mischief.

  • Bilingual Bonus: Their songs are mainly in English but have passages in French, Spanish and Yoruba.
  • Break Up Song: "Stranger / Lover"
  • Cover Version: They have a tendency towards this in their live performances covering artists as diverse as Chaka Khan and Jay Electronica
  • Epic Rocking: "Transmission / Michaelion" is this, clocking in at six minutes.
  • Generation Xerox: Their father was Anga Díaz, a Afro-Cuban drummer most well known for playing with Buena Vista Social Club.
  • Genre Mashup: Although labelled a Alternative R&B duo, their music encompasses trip hop, Afro-Cuban jazz and traditional Yoruba music.
  • Grief Song: Their debut eponymous album is dedicated to their father and older sister, both of whom died within the same year and have songs such as "Think of You" and "Yanira" focusing on their feelings when they passed and how much they miss them.
  • Meaningful Name: The Ibeyi are twin òrìṣà in Yoruba spirituality. Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi are twins.
