Moral Event Horizon / Crossed

Go To

A lot of characters in Crossed ultimately have to sail over the Moral Event Horizon line in one way or another, sometimes becoming not much better than the Crossed themselves.

  • In Wish You Were Here, Shaky shoots a child that has become Crossed after extorting a promise from Rab to put him into the expedition to the mainland in return for saving his life. It's implied that Shaky unlocked the door that held the child on purpose in order to engineer the situation. Shaky wanted to be in the expedition in order to stave off his ennui and find a reason to live again, but it backfires on him spectacularly later on.
    • And it turns out that he crossed the Moral Event Horizon long before that, when he abandoned Ashoke to his fate while Aoileann was asleep, due to him being a hindrance. This eventually led to him freeing the bound Gamekeeper and ultimately becoming the Trashbag Mummy.
  • While he was no saint to begin with, Don finally crossed his in Volume 3, Chapter 18 of Wish You Were Here when he pointed his gun at the Drift Fleet baby's head while trying to bring up an ultimatum, eventually causing said baby's death when Jackson kills him.
  • Richie in Dear Or Alive crossed his when he knocked out his fiancée and left her to die in the crashed and burning plane on C-Day.
  • Jack in Shrink crossed his already in childhood when he sexually molested his younger brother Clancy. Him kicking his own girlfriend out to be torn apart by the Crossed once she heard the revelation just fully cements him as an Asshole Victim.
  • It can be argued that Cindy (and Stan) crossed it when they shoot the children they come across in issue 3 of volume 1. Yes the kids had been doing some questionable things but still. Even Stan himself can't get the whole thing out of his head, lampshading this trope.
  • Boss Yamada might have crossed the line during Hazuki's childhood when he fed her pet puppy to Usama just to toughen her up.
  • Steve from Homo Superior was already sadistic, ruthless and sociopathic long before the Crossed outbreak, as demonstrated by her treatment of prisoners at Abu Ghraib and her abandonment of people who trusted her after the outbreak. While she's implied to have a Freudian Excuse and seemingly mellows out during her travels with her companions, Steve eventually throws it away and crosses the line by shooting Greg in the kneecap to leave him for the Crossed and then willingly infecting herself at the end.
  • Greg himself (who had already abandoned his original family during C-Day) might have crossed this by attempting to abandon Steve, who was pregnant with his baby.
  • Clooney's plan from The Golden Road is mostly based on Pay Evil unto Evil, but him throwing Jared into the freezer to be gruesomely murdered by Crossed just because he had sex with his cheating girlfriend is too harsh, never mind that Jared appeared to try and make peace with Clooney, making his fate a Karmic Overkill at worst. Even Welles himself is horrified upon discovering Jared's remains, and he is himself no saint. And even if Jared's indirect murder was not enough, Clooney might have crossed it for good once he knowlingly infects himself with Nathan's severed finger and murders his girlfriend.
  • Speaking of Welles, there's the whole "stump scam" thing, where he tricked countless residents of a small town into hacking off their limbs after fooling them with stories of people receiving great insurance after becoming crippled. No wonder the second the townspeople start to turn into Crossed, they decide to start gunning for him first and foremost.
  • Arguably Cody from the bunker arc when he casually mentions he gave Lloyd’s family the weakest car while they are trying to get away from Smokey due to not considering them useful.
  • It's hard to point where exactly had Harold Lorre crossed the line, but him repeatedly raping and then brutally killing Claire after deeming her a slut definitely shows that he's gone too far to turn back. Keep in mind that he already murdered Darwin several pages prior, all for trying to hit on Amanda earlier.
  • In Gore Angels, if Ryan orchestrating Emiko's gang-rape and keeping Cody from intervening didn't already put him over the line, then him calling her a slut and insisting that she enjoyed it certainly cements him as an Asshole Victim when Emiko enacts her revenge by first tying him up and then releasing him onto Crossed-infested streets.
  • The uninfected Martin raping Shirley while waiting for the Crossed to find them only Gavin Land does instead and does him justice.
  • Curtis Wentz crossed the line long ago with his apparent gang-rape and murder of Land's daughter. When the first time of Land getting back at him failed, Wentz went even further past the line when not only did he manage to convict Land to a Prison Rape, but he was also implied to have murdered Land's son and wife alike. Even when it seems he started to atone for his sins and try to redeem himself, it's obviously not even close enough to stop Land from killing him for all he did.
  • The Gamekeeper from Wish You Were Here is really hard to nail, but he definitely crossed the line when he killed Lloyd after the latter tried to stand up to him and then made sure the last thing the poor man saw was his wife Agnes being raped, blaming it all on her just to twist the knife further. This act in addition caused Agnes to hang herself out of despair not long afterwards, and yet the Gamekeeper doesn't even acknowledge his own fault, going for Aoileann next after spending some time away from Shaky's group.
  • It’s hard for a Crossed to get one really but the super ones can:
    • The Salt Clan for the Morton's Fork Sadistic Choice they inflict on various settlements with visible glee.
    • Horsecock for revealing he deliberately sent an infected Patrick back to Cindy, sneeringly calling it a “present” as he attempts to rape Kelly.
    • Smokey forcing Oliver to rape an uninfected Eve before turning her just to demean both of them.
    • But the biggest example of all is Beau Salt from +100, who completely crossed the line into ultimate villainy when he cherished the carnage going around him. Worse, he built an entire legacy of Crossed to haunt the future uninfected generations for at least a century to come. Keep in mind that he did not even notice being infected until he saw the cross on his face, meaning that Sault was so depraved he maintained his personality and his intelligence. And even before the C-Day, he already was a notorious Serial Killer who afterwards became someone much worse...
  • The First Brother and the First Sister from Homo Tortor cross it by brutally torturing the First Child and then vivisecting him once he starts "feeling like a man". The reveal that the whole community was prepairing the First Child to be slaughtered and then used as a furniture fourteen years ahead of time makes all of that even worse.
    • Washington, the protagonist of the same arc, arguably crosses it when he gets Ronnie to sacrifice Curtis, thus indirectly causing Ronnie's own death, in what turned out to be a double Senseless Sacrifice.
