  • #2: Feather and Flame (2022; by Livia Blackburne; based on Mulan)

    Rebel Rose

  • Big Bad: Bastien, who plans to assassinate the king and start a revolution against the monarchy.
  • Cool Crown: Belle is crowned with a gold diadem inlaid with rubies that once belonged to Lio's mother.
  • Intro-Only Point of View: The novel begins with a prologue from the Enchantress (named Orella)'s point of view and then goes to Belle's point of view for the rest of the novel.
  • Named by the Adaptation: The Beast is named Lio, and the Enchantress is named Orella, despite neither having been given names in the original movie.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Le Fou, whose birth name is revealed to be Hercule Garoutte.
  • Properly Paranoid: Belle, throughout the story, suspects Bastien is working against Lio and herself. As it turns out, she's right.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Belle gives one to Bastien after he tries to banish Marguerite from the castle, telling him he knows nothing about the commoners of Aveyon.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: There's a scene where Belle and Lio share a heated kiss in their guest bedroom at Bastien's manor. There's a paragraph break (read: "fade to black" or "dissolve"), and the next thing we see is the couple in bed. In other words, within these pages is our first example of a Disney Princess gettin' it on. (This, among other things, puts this novel firmly in YA, not tween, territory.)

    Feather and Flame

  • Alliterative Title: Feather and Flame, two words starting with "F".
  • King on His Deathbed: The Emperor is dying and wants Mulan to be his heir.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Mulan's friends from the army, Yao, Ling and Chien Po, don't make an appearance and are not even mentioned in conversation. Likewise, Mushu and Cri-Kee are absent.
