Mr. Revere and I is a 1953 children's historical novel by Robert Lawson.

Scheherazade, better known as Sherry, is the most admired horse in her regiment of the English army. But when she and her owner, Leftenant Sir Cedric Barnstable, are sent across the ocean to Boston to put down the rebellious colonists, Sir Cedric soon gambles Sherry away. After months of misery as a carthorse, Sherry falls into the possession of Paul Revere, and goes on to play an important role in The American Revolution.

Mr. Revere and I contains examples of:

  • Alliterative Name: Dagmore Dalrymple
  • Asleep for Days: Sir Dagmore would sleep for four or five days after gorging on roast beef.
  • Broken Pedestal: Sherry spends her first few years with the Reveres longing to go back to England and wishing the colonists would stop foolishly disrespecting the King's authority. But when the King shuts down Boston's harbor as punishment for the Boston Tea Party, Sherry is so shocked by the Disproportionate Retribution that for the first time she starts to have doubts as to his divine wisdom.
  • Childhood Brain Damage: Sir Cedric has a stutter because he fell from his nurse's arms when he was two.
  • Copycat Mockery: A colonist mimics Sir Cedric's stutter.
  • Defector from Decadence: Every few days or so, Mr. Revere helps someone defect from the English army by giving him American clothes, an American-style haircut and a new name and occupation. Most of the deserters left because of inhumane treatment.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Hezekiah had the tip of his tongue burned off for using profanity on a Sunday.
  • Fixing the Game: Nat Sime is implied to have used loaded dice to win Sherry from Sir Cedric.
  • Produce Pelting: Colonists throw dead fish and vegetables at the redcoats.
  • Smelly Skunk: During the Midnight Ride, Sherry is separated from Mr. Revere and captured by the British. One of the other horses almost steps on a skunk, gets blasted, and bucks her rider. In the confusion, Sherry bucks her own rider and runs away.
  • A Taste of the Lash: Giles Treadwell, whom Mr. Revere renames Enoch Sawtell, defects after receiving 25 lashes because he didn't salute Sir Cedric the right way.
  • Tears of Joy: After the long and miserable voyage to Boston, Sherry sheds a few tears when she's finally let out of the hold.
  • Tongue Trauma: Hezekiah had the tip of his tongue burned off for using profanity on a Sunday.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Mrs. Revere loves tea. She constantly complains about the boycott on English tea and the inferior Dutch tea she has to drink instead. After the Boston Tea Party, she's delighted to find tea leaves in the lining of Mr. Revere's Indian outfit.
  • Upper-Class Twit: The British officer ranks seem to be entirely comprised of these.
