Fanfic / Inheritance (My Hero Academia)

Go To

When Inko dies in a train wreck while protecting Izuku from the impact, he discovers that he's had a Quirk all along. "Inheritance", the ability to take someone else's Quirk when they die, may seem like a strange and problematic power, but it won't lessen his desire to be a hero any. Armed with multiple Quirks and his loved ones' support, Izuku is ready to tackle the road to heroism, in a path that might be more roundabout than most, but will hopefully still get him where he needs to go.

Inheritance is a My Hero Academia fanfic by AisforAmy71 following an Izuku whose Quirk allows him to take other people's Quirks when they die.

Inheritance contains examples of the following:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Sir Nighteye and Gran Torino are both introduced before the canon timeline starts, during Izuku's childhood.
    • Inasa Yoarashi is introduced during the Recommendation Exam instead of the Provisional Licensing Exam like in canon.
  • Adaptational Name Change: A few students choose different hero names than in canon.
    • Izuku chooses to go by Vanguard instead of Deku, though he later changes it to Gestalt after he gets his provisional license.
    • On Izuku's suggestion, Shoto makes his name Tempest instead of going by his first name.
    • Since Tenya is hopeful that his brother can return to hero work someday, he doesn't take the name Ingenium. Instead, he becomes Recipro.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: Because he's had a Quirk since childhood, Izuku is confident and self-assured here as opposed to his canon self's meek personality. The multiple kidnapping attempts by All For One also left him cautious and hesitant to trust people, though he grows out of this when he becomes closer to his classmates.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Because Nighteye has been acquainted with Izuku since his childhood, and used his Quirk to see that Izuku would become All Might's successor, they have a much better relationship than in canon, with Nighteye even becoming one of his mentors alongside All Might and Gran Torino.
    • All Might and Nighteye never had a falling out about the former's decision not to retire after getting injured, so they're still on good terms and work in the same agency.
    • While Bakugo initially tries to bully Izuku like in canon, Izuku being more confident and self-assured here means he's quick to shut that down. Not to mention, Bakugo receiving actual consequences for his behavior triggers a Heel Realization earlier, and they resolve their issues and grow to have a more amicable relationship much faster than in canon.
  • Ascended Extra: Instead of being an absentee father, Midoriya Hisashi plays a large role in his son's life here.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Izuku can use some of his Quirks together to achieve greater effects, such as combining Levitation and One For All to jump and travel long distances. He also uses his Plastic Color Change and Transparency Quirks to make himself almost invisible.
  • Brought Down to Badass: By the end of the story, Izuku chooses to have a modified version of the permanent quirk-erasing drug used on him to get rid of his Inheritance quirk. While he won't be able to inherit Quirks like he used to, he still has 13 other Quirks and the potential to gain more because of One For All.
  • Children Do the Housework: Izuku does all the cooking at home since his father is terrible at it and is usually too busy with work to even try.
  • Combo Platter Powers: Izuku has 14 Quirks because of Inheritance, and although he loses Inheritance itself, he has the potential to gain even more through One For All.
  • Death by Adaptation: Inko dies in the first chapter, protecting Izuku when the train they were on crashes because of a villain attack.
  • De-power: Yoarashi is shot by a permanent quirk-erasing bullet in the fight against Overhaul. UA hopes to have Eri eventually restore his Quirk.
  • Fountain of Youth: In the final arc, Eri accidentally uses her Quirk on Hisashi, regressing him to his early twenties.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Bakugou grows to resent Izuku for his unique and attention-grabbing quirk.
  • Healing Hands: In Chapter 47, Izuku inherits a healing Quirk from a retired doctor who wanted to pass on his Quirk before he died. This is notable for being the first Quirk Izuku inherits knowingly and willingly.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Some of the quirks Izuku had initially written off as being useless to hero work come in surprisingly handy in specific situations. During the Provisional Licensing Exam, his Hair Growth on Mammals Quirk lets him give Gang Orca a several-meter-long mustache that he uses to tie up the pretend-villain with.
  • Man of Kryptonite: Izuku becomes this to All For One because the villain was so badly injured in his fight against All Might that just being near Izuku could kill him through Inheritance.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Hisashi has the same habit of muttering really fast when he's thinking as Izuku.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: All For One becomes interested in Izuku because of his ability to hold multiple Quirks without issue.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Not all of the Quirks that Izuku inherits can be used for hero work. For example, one of his Quirks lets him know what kind of food a person is craving.
