“I’m sure you’re looking forward to finding a way back to your own time as soon as possible,” Nedzu said. “I want you to know that U.A. will do everything in its power to help you achieve that goal. Time travel is a complicated equation to solve, but I’m sure if we put our heads together we’ll come up with something!”

Five raised a skeptical eyebrow. “And you’re just going to do that out of the goodness of your heart? I’m not even old enough for high school yet.”

“Well, we’re all heroes for a reason, no? What good are we if we can’t help a single child in need?” Nedzu pointed out with a pleasantly neutral smile as he sipped his tea.

OR: Instead of time traveling into the apocalypse, thirteen-year-old Five Hargreeves teleports in the middle of the USJ fight.

He gets a couple of new dads out of it.

An Unexpected Future is a crossover fic between My Hero Academia and The Umbrella Academy. Can be found here.

An Unexpected Future contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Personality Change: Justified. Rather than heading to the apocalypse, Five ends up in the middle of the USJ fight, meaning rather than being a sixty year old in a teenager’s body he actually is thirteen in this fic. His personality has a few changes. He’s noticeably a bit more childish, passive aggressive, subdued, patient, and optimistic than his original self, who is more matured, openly rude, violent, restless, and cynical.
  • Alternate Universe: Rather than time travel to the apocalypse, Five instead travels to the world of My Hero Academia. In addition, Five and his siblings seem to be considered some of the first Quirk users rather than miracle births.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: When Five finds that Iida is planning on chasing Stain, he asks him, 'how are you going to do it?' Iida isn't able to answer his question.
  • Blatant Lies: When his attempt to cook dinner before resent Mic and Eraserhead come home fails, Five, panicking, lies about the situation. This prompts a talk from Present Mic about how lying about something like this can potentially get him killed if he brings it into the field.
  • Commonality Connection: Todoroki and Five develop a bond over how similar their backstories are, with Five declaring Todoroki an 'honorary Hargreeves.'
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: The teachers and students are disturbed to hear what Five considers normal, in particular how Five views the role of a Hero and how he had been fighting Villains since he was twelve.
  • Epic Fail: Five decides to cook a meal for Present Mic and Eraserhead to show that he is competent and does not need to be looked after. The end result has to be thrown away, along with the pot after Five tries to clean it using bleach.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Bakugo is suspicious of Five ever since he appeared at the USJ. Even he feels that Five's childhood and training are 'fucked up.'
  • Fanboy: Midoriya’s reaction to Five once he shows up to the class implies that he knows exactly who Five is, although he can’t say anything due to Timey-Wimey Ball preventing so. Given the Umbrella Academy is famous In-Universe, it’s hardly surprising Midoriya knows about it.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Rather than Five traveling to the apocalypse, instead he travels to the USJ at the time of the League of Villains attacking. This results in several changes, including:
    • Mineta transfers from the Hero course as a result of the attack;
    • Five talks to Todoroki about their common situations. Following a talk with Nedzu about what he knows, Endeavour is removed from Todoroki's list of Internships;
    • After Stain attacks Ingenium, Five is present at the hospital and manages to talk to Iida. His resulting conversation, in particular bringing up how dangerous Stain is and asking Iida how he would take down Stain is enough to dissuade Iida from going after the Hero Killer.
  • Language Barrier: Being stuck in a foreign country where you can only barely speak the language and having no apparent way to get back home to your siblings, who are suffering under an Abusive Parent.
  • Mythology Gag: The Support item that Mei builds to help Five travel back to his own time ultimately takes the form of a briefcase, exactly like the briefcases the Temps Commission uses.
  • Power Creep, Power Seep: Downplayed and Justified. Due to the time gap and Quirks becoming stronger with each generation, Class 1-A is considerably stronger than the Umbrella Academy with minimal training, with Five comparing them to 'a stampede of Bens'. However, Five's teleportation ability is still rare, especially with its time travel component.
  • Training from Hell: The Umbrella Academy training is just as brutal as it was in canon. Five goes into his own personalised training to manage his teleportation abilities - he was restrained or placed in increasingly disorientating situations and would have to escape on his own, as well as teleport further and further until he physically couldn't move. Todoroki empathises with this situation, seeing it as comparable to his own.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Five does this a couple of times, notably considering himself ready to join Class 1-A in battle training and thinking he could get the drop on Endeavour.
