Main Characters
Cordell Beauregard Walker
Cordell Walker, a Texas Ranger, returns home following a ten month undercover stint after his wife Emily's death. He needs to learn how to center his family instead of focusing on his job all the time.
- Action Dad: Comes with the territory as a Texas Ranger.
- Big Eater: He eats a lot of food, even taking the pizza he ordered for himself, Micki and Trey to a school dance to check on the kids after a tornado strikes Austin.
- Berserk Button: Bringing up Emily's death leads to a suspect being beat up in the pilot.
- Embarrassing First Name: Although he'll answer to a nickname - Cordi - Walker prefers to be called by his last name instead of Cordell.
- Last-Name Basis: Except for when he's referred to by his nickname, Cordi, everyone calls him by his last name.
Michelle Floriana Ramirez
Micki is one of the first female Rangers of color in the Texas Rangers, and has something to prove as a result. She's a probie assigned to watch over Walker.
- Abusive Parents: Her mother Adrianna is manipulative, and Micki cries when talking to her boyfriend Trey about her.
- Action Girl: She's a Texas Ranger and will chase down suspects as needed.
- Gender Flip: As Walker's partner, she's an analogue to the (male) James Trivette.
- Put on a Bus: Left after the sixth episode of season 2.
William Walker
A gay Assistant DA, who is engaged to his boyfriend, Bret, who helped raise his niece and nephew with his parents when his brother went undercover following Emily's death.
- Parental Substitute: To Stella and August following Emily's death and Cordell's undercover mission. He even sought custody of them, which pissed his brother off when he discovered this.
Captain Larry James
Walker and Micki's boss, who is hiding his suspicions about Emily's death from the former.
- By-the-Book Cop: Assigns Micki to work with Walker because he needs the latter to follow the rules.
Stella Walker
Sixteen year old Stella is Walker and Emily's eldest child, who is not handling her mom's death very well.
- Bratty Teenage Daughter: Lashes out at her father following his undercover stint after Emily's death. She gets better once Walker starts to settle in.
August Walker
Fourteen year old August is Walker and Emily's youngest child. He's trying his best to please his father once he returns.
- Wild Teen Party: August gets drunk at a bonfire started by his mother when she was younger, and needs a ride home afterwards.
Abeline Walker
The matriarch of the Walker family, Abeline is protective of her sons and grandchildren. She and her husband are having marital issues due to an affair she had.
- Affair Letters: Abbie's affair is discovered by Walker when he accidentally stumbles across letters written to her by her boyfriend.
Bonham Walker
The patriarch of the Walker family, he's sleeping in another house on the ranch property following Abeline's affair.
Trey Barnett
Micki's boyfriend, who used to be a medic in the Armed Forces. He's now a soccer coach at the school that Stella and August attend.
Geraldine "Geri" Broussard
A family friend of Walker and Emily's, who was with the latter the night she died. She owns a bar that Walker frequents, The Side Step.
- New Old Flame: Her ex-boyfriend (and Cordell's friend) Hoyt Rawlins returns to town, and she's not thrilled to see him but she's still upset after he's arrested.
Recurring Characters
Emily Walker
Walker's wife, and August and Stella's mother, she was murdered while providing relief to refugees along the border. Her death is currently haunting her husband.
- Character Death: Her death kicks off the plot of the series, and has traumatized her family.
Hoyt Rawlins
An old friend of Walker's, who is on the wrong side of the law. Abeline is fiercely protective of Hoyt and believes in him, unlike the rest of the family.
- Abusive Parents: Implied by Abeline when she mentions letting Hoyt stay with them when he was younger.
Bret Nam
Liam's fiancé, who moved to Austin with him after Emily's death to help him with his niece and nephew.
