Homer

I want to write down my story: from the end of the World to the end of my life.

Protagonist of Metro 2034. Homer is a former Metro technician now living in Sevastopolskaya Station. He named himself Homer after the author of The Iliad because of his wish to write in his style and he has made it his life goal to chronicle the events and history of the post-apocalyptic Metro. He returns in Metro 2035 as one of Artyom's companions.

  • Love Cannot Overcome: His wife left him between 2034 and 2035 because she couldn't handle constantly having to worry over his safety whenever he left his home station to chronicle the events around Metro.
  • Morality Pet: Hunter is much nicer to him than he is to most other people, because he sees the part of himself he lost after getting Mind Raped by the Dark Ones in Homer.
  • Parental Substitute: He ends up becoming something of a surrogate parent to Sasha after her father dies.
  • Supporting Protagonist: Metro 2034 is really story about Sasha and Hunter, but Homer serves as the point of view character who chronicles their story.

    Sasha

Sasha

Daughter of the former leader of Avtozavodskaya Station who was banished after a Trotskyist revolution. She joins Homer and Hunter in their travels and the relationship between her and Hunter becomes the main focus of the story. Not to be confused with a similarly named character from Metro 2033 video game.

  • Break the Cutie: The cynical world of Moscow metro does not end up treating poor Sasha well.
  • Contrasting Sequel Main Character: To Artyom from the prequel. Both are survivors of the World War III and are residents of the Moscow Metro, but they are very different in terms of character:
    • The main difference is Artyom is an Action Hero with an arsenal of weapons, while Sasha is an Action Survivor whose weapon is only a knife and is less of a combatant than him.
    • Artyom is a man in his late-20s with a black hair and blue eyes. Sasha is a young 17-year-old teenage girl with an ash-blonde hair.
    • How they also know Hunter in their first encounter with him contrasts. Whereas Artyom firstly encounters Hunter during the attack of the Dark Ones in Exhibition and was still in fine physical and mental condition, Sasha encounters Hunter, one year later after 2033, who is a chronic alcoholic, psychologically fractured after encountering the Dark Ones and is past his physical prime.
  • The Exile: She and her father were exiled from Avtozavodskaya, and are forced to work as scavengers, living in an abandoned station.
  • May–December Romance: She ends up falling in love with Hunter who is much older than her.
  • Morality Chain: She is the only one who can keep Hunter's bloodthirst in check to some extent.
  • Never Found the Body: Last time we see her in the book, she is left in the flooding Tulskaya station as its hermetic doors are shut. Her body isn't found afterwards and she is presumed dead. Metro 2035 reveals that she and three others managed to escape the station.
  • Womanchild: She's 17 years old, but since she has spent the entirety of her life inside her home without meeting anyone but her father, she acts like a child and isn't aware of social norms.

    SPOILER CHARACTER

Artyom Popov

A survivor from Sevastopolskaya station, who is a soldier garrisoned to Tulskaya station.
  • Contrasting Replacement Character: In 2034, where Popov replaces the original Artyom's spot, yet he plays out very differently to the previous Artyom.
    • Whereas the original Artyom is presented as a hero of the Moscow Metro for stopping the Dark Ones' threat, Popov is the polar opposite to all of them, where he is not only more different from his predecessor, but Popov is a mistaken Heroic Mime who shares the same first name as his predecessor and has a vastly different occupation.
    • The main Artyom is the mainstay hero of the franchise, while Popov is a side character, as he only appears on 2034's latter half and he is not the story's main protagonist where that role is instead taken by Homer and Sasha.
    • Their occupations also vastly contrast. While the main Artyom hailed from Exhibition station before becoming a key figure of the Dark Ones' collapse and the eventual member of the Rangers and is married to Anna, Popov hails from Sevastopolskaya station and is an ordinary soldier stationed within Tulskaya station and is married to Galya.
    • Unlike the main Artyom who is a Silent Protagonist, Popov is actively conversational in the novel.
    • The main Artyom is an obvious protagonist to the franchise, while Popov is a Decoy Protagonist, as he is not even the main protagonist of 2034.
  • Decoy Protagonist: Initially believed to be the main protagonist of 2034. Until it was revealed that Homer and Sasha take that role and Popov appears much more lately in the novel, making him more of a side character than the main protagonist.
  • Heroic Mime: Averted, because he's a different Artyom from the one in the rest of the series.
  • Just Following Orders: When the plague reached an alarming rate, Popov accepts his commander's request and simply shoots the infected without any hesitation.
  • Put on a Bus: After 2034, Popov is never mentioned in any of the franchise's works.
  • Walking Spoiler: His very existence is a spoiler, as he's easily confused with the hero Artyom.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: After the flooding of the Tulskaya station, his fate becomes completely unknown and has never appeared in any other franchise's works ever since.

    Hunter
A member of the Spartan Rangers and the friend of Artyom's stepfather. After disappearing for almost a year during the events of 2033, Hunter returns in this novel, only he's a broken shell of his former self after his harrowing encounter with the Dark Ones.
