openEdit War on Characters / Genshin Impact The Knights of Favonius
Courtesy link here.
- Kotomikun added the Difficult, but Awesome example on Eula's profile, but the ending sentence (which I bolded for convenience) is a ZCE.
- Difficult, but Awesome: Though she's capable of some of the most ludicrously large single-hit attacks in the game, pulling this off isn't easy since it requires precise combos of attacks to power up her "Starfell Sword" ult, in addition to using Superconduct and other effects to reduce physical resistance since most tough enemies have a lot of it. Having many copies of her limited-edition weapon also helps.
- I commented out the bolded sentence with an edit reason: "The ending sentence is a Zero-Context Example. What about the "limited-edition weapon" that makes it noteworthy to Eula? And what exactly is the weapon? Don't just assume that readers will immediately know it's the Song of Broken Pines right from the get-go because that mentality falls under Fan Myopia. Also, don't use FanNicknames or Genshin slang on non-Trivia pages. Stick with the game's original terminology."
- Kotomikun un-commented the ZCE wholesale with no improvements, and left a very blunt and snarky edit reason that was directed at me specifically: "Honestly, the only reason I'm putting this back how it was is to see if I get another incredible overreaction to it. If you don't like how it's written, Repair, Don't Respond. Also, I wasn't using a fan nickname, I just misremembered the name of the glowing sword (it's "Lightfall Sword")."
openPsi 001
Psi 001 seems to have a bone to pick with Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time. As mentioned here, they've written their own opinions on the YMMV page and twisted them to seem like something spread throughout the fandom. They also seem to have a wonk about "PC culture", calling alternate Tawna an attempt to make the Crash series more "politically correct". They've also moaned about "PC culture" in the forums, according to Shiny Cotton Candy.

- They Changed It, Now It Sucks!!:
- Grandpa Lou’s Adaptational Personality Change from a grouchy old geezer to a calm, spiritual yoga hippie didn’t go well with fans of the original series.
- Some aren't happy with Betty being homosexual, given that her love for her husband Howard was an important part of the original series.
The first one is fine, although I have not seen this reaction other then people just calling it different, but is it just me or should the second be giving a little more context or at least reworded.
Edited by LadyErinNYopenWrong language stuff in 'real life'
Good evening everyone,
well, I have always liked to read tvtropes, and now, as I have found something clearly false, I have registered, and am quite unsure how I could edit that. Point is also, there is in a sense nothing to edit, as it is just false, and I flinch a bit from just deleting.
The thing (that's a pun, you will see why) I mean is at Real Life (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin/RealLife). There the follwing is mentioned:
German has a tendency to name certain things as something-"zeug". As "Zeug" means "thing", all of these literally translate as simple descriptions of what the word means. For instance... "Drums" are "schlagzeug", literal translation: "hit-things". "Flugzeug" = "Airplane" = "Flying thing"
Well, that is simply not correct. First, 'zeug' doesn't mean 'thing'. 'Thing' would simply be 'Ding'. 'Zeug' translates to 'Gerät, Ausrüstung, Maschine', so it would be correctly (and much, much better) translated as 'device, machine, tool, equipment'.
So: "Drums" are "schlagzeug", literal translation: "hit-device". "Flugzeug" = "Airplane" = "Flying machine". Or, for example: "Werkzeug" = "tool (kit)" (Singular: "tool", plural "tool kit", s. and p. are the same word).
And so on… you see?
Now, how would you experienced tropers handle that?
Best regards, chr
PS. Sorry, it seems I couldn't format that as I wanted.
Edited by temploginopenDoes Viler New Villain have to be episodic like Knight Of Cerebus?
The description of Viler New Villain does not make it clear if the example can come from the first installment or if, like Knight of Cerebus, it must come from at least a second one.
For example, if in a movie, book, or game, the Disc-One Final Boss is a sympathetic and noble Anti-Villain, but The Man Behind the Man is pure evil, does the latter count as a Viler New Villain?
openWhen is fixing "Witty Writing" going too far?
So a short while ago on Characters.Genshin Impact The Knights Of Favonius (history here), I reformatted the One Hundred Percent Adoration Rating example on Varka's profile to "eliminate Word Cruft and fix some grammar". However, not long after that, I received a PM from Tropers/3from2k (the one who added the example) calling me out for my edit, and they said I was removing the witty writing that TV Tropes is known for. They were not overly hostile about the situation either and they actually presented a valid complaint for my actions. While I won't reveal the full contents of the PM, they did quote one of the supposed TV Tropes Customs in it.
> "Our primary purpose here is to catalogue tropes. We earnestly wish to have fun while doing so, and we encourage breezy, colloquial language and wittiness whenever possible."
Now this got me thinking, when is cleaning up "witty writing" going too far? Was I in the wrong to use the Word Cruft policy to justify changing someone's validly-written entry? If so, I deeply apologize.
Edited by DivineFlame100openRegarding troping temporary game events.
I know that Temporary Online Content exists as its own trope, but what if said content contains other tropes? What is the policy for troping content in video games that only exists for a short time? And are the examples still valid after the content expires and can no longer be cited?
Once again, this is related to Genshin Impact. That game is no stranger to temporary events, with each including unique gameplay gimmicks. I'm seeing a lot of examples from events that have long since expired, and aside from the Genshin Impact Wiki, there's no other way to verify examples about those events.
openAmazonian Beauty entry
Claris Works keeps readding an Amazonian Beauty in My Hero Academia - Class 1-B for Itsuka Kendo. The problem is even just looking at the character picture it's pretty obvious the character is not muscular so I'm not sure why it keeps getting re-added.
openInaccurate fact on Character Gush
So on CharacterGush.Live Action TV, it says that Dr. Bashir still sleeps with his teddy bear. But he doesn't— he keeps it on the shelf in his bedroom. Yet I don't want to edit someone else's opinion post as that seems wrong.
resolved Bad grammar
math3299 seems to have issues with indentation, capitalisation and punctuation, as shown on Welcome to the Game II and The Red Order: First Days of Eurasia.
Edited by HTDopenimages won't load
For some reason, the images in Characters.Fate Prototype won't load for me. Does anyone else have this problem?
opentake that
Take That!/Advertising:
I've cleaned off several "hey, this ad is on/was on This Very Wiki" or "this very page", neither of which are in anyway relevant to the ad being an example of throwing shade. Examples are not recent and -possibly- troper tales are also being violated.
Can we get a note at the top saying don't put in that X ad is being shown on the wiki?
openRescued example?
YMMV.Pokemon Journeys The Series
- Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Iris has been a Base-Breaking Character for many fans due to acting like an annoying brat towards Ash (especially with the catchphrase, "You're such a kid") and not really advancing her Dragon Master goal during the Black & White series, especially with Axew never evolving despite showcasing a desire to. Her return in Journeys, however, is much better received by those same fans mainly thanks to her mellowing out her tsundere aspects (with her catchphrase treated as a playful tease rather than harsh berating) and advancing significantly toward her goal by becoming the new Unova Champion AND finally evolving Axew all the way to a Haxorus.
This was deleted as "None of this is any different from Iris was portrayed in Best Wishes. She's still the same character, people just didn't pay attention to her beyond her catchphrase back then".
I still think it's an example as it fixes why critics "didn't pay attention" by giving her more desirable traits to offset that, even if the hate was irrational it still existed to be Rescued from. (It also seems like complaining about the haters.)
Should it be added back?
openPage with all entries lost to link rot.
ImageLinks.Dont Go In The Woods has only one entry, and it now lost with how imageshack has changed. Should the page be placed on the cutlist?
openMusic entry
A while ago on Horrible.Live Action Films G To M, I rewrote the entry on Music as a few users on the cleanup thread agreed that it had become a wall of text. One part I removed was this note explaining the infamy behind Autism Speaks, since it bloated the entry:
"Who are considered a hate group among the autistic community for their pro-eugenicist views — in particular, their vocal support of medical procedures to "cure" autism and outright prevent children with autism from being born — as well as being supportive of parents/carers who abuse or have even killed their autistic children while blaming the aforementioned victims, having little-to-no representation of people with autism (having no autistic members on their board), and a general disdain for them despite claiming to be an supportive charity."
The troper GF 93 readded it, citing that it should be kept since it explains the infamy, but I'm feeling unsure of what to do next.
openYMMV pages for websites
Is it so that YMMV pages are not at all allowed for website pages?
openNo Title
Not sure how to describe this, but Muse Hysteria had a lot of the bullet points and other things removed, making a huge unreadable mess of the page, and was then cutlisted by the same person, HotmanX32.
Vrotdugi made this edit to Supernatural deleting most of the entry's commentary on what I have found to my knowledge to be accurate and neutrally-written descriptions of the criticisms viewers had about the ending, changing it to complain about Destiel (Dean/Castiel) shippers, even though the debates over the show queerbaiting with Destiel have become a mainstream issuenote .
They also removed this entry describing the show's Take That! jokes aimed at Wincest (Dean/Sam Winchester, who are brothers) fans. Though I'm not especially sad to see the latter gone due to its inherent negativity, the entry was accurate and written objectively, and they gave no good reason as to why they removed it.
As someone who does not watch the show but is somewhat familiar with aspects of it through (mostly non-shipper) friends who do, I started watching the page to guard it against potential Fan Dumb and Hate Dumb vandalism in the wake of the various November 5 controversies. Since then there's been several entries about Castiel which even I found to be excessively negative. And looking at their past edits I noticed that indeed they were all by this same troper. More specifically, they added this entry accusing Castiel of being a Villain Protagonist who is cruel to one of the heroes (given the show, literally all of the heroes are guilty of major wrongdoing and he is not unique), as well as this Unfortunate Implications entry accusing him of being abusive, which I deleted and rewrote because it did not even bother to provide a qualified citation, on top of being obvious character-bashing.
While Castiel isn't a character without controversy or legitimate reasons to dislike him, it's usually not centered around these particular issues. In particular, both of these interpretations are widely considered to be Ron the Death Eater takes from the extreme end of the Wincest shipping fandom by people with a Die for Our Ship grudge against Castiel, or hardcore Sam Winchester stans who are convinced that Castiel "wronged" their fave. In other words, a Vocal Minority opinion, and not one that is shared or considered rational by a large part of the audience.
Together it is clear that they are posting with a clear shipping agenda at work. I'm not going to criticize them for their choice of ship as I quite frankly do not care for ship wars or arguments on their morality or not. But as someone who has dealt with cleaning up shipping-related vandalism on multiple pages in the past, it's a huge Berserk Button for me, to the point that I've started following pages such as these specifically to keep that kind of garbage from happening on my watch (which inevitably did). If Vrotdugi sees this thread, I should make this very clear: we do not tolerate that sort of behavior on this website.
