I am extremely terrible at thinking up of descriptions. What article of clothing a person wear, what kind of details a soldier's uniform has, how this set of armor looks like, what certain weapons look like...

Anyway I can get better at this?

A stranger is like the shadows. It is so common to the world everyone will just ignore them.

Best place is a forum alongside pictures of what you want a description of. Also if you know the general type of garment, you can look for what classifies as a subcategory of that garment i.e. types of shirts, types of pants, types of military uniforms, etc.

[up] Weblinks Are Not Examples. Also, that is not bulleted correctly and needs a colon separating the trope and example text.

Explain the use of the trope. And use proper formatting and capitalization.

You said that already. Do you mean to say, instead of "see this Dilbert strip here" use something more like "Dilbert uses this trope to get funding from the Pointy-haired boss" If I knew a better way, I would have done that.

How does he make the PHB be think he thought of the funding so much that he's glad about it? You never need to say someone, "uses this trope." Just say how it's used.

If I have to explain what "explain" means, we have serious problems. State in your own words how the trope is utilized in this particular case. Do not rely on external context (clicking a link).

But how much should be explained? Giving a full plot synopsis for every instance of a trope would be silly. Could you explain what is an example? Rather than continually, and rather tersely, informing me what is not?

I got one for the Puzzle & Dragons page, specifically Puzzle and Dragons Z:

  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: When you encounter Rivera at the Incandescent Crater, she asks you a question about who you think made her the fierce creature she is. One of the answers to that question is "GungHo Online Entertainment".

—EDIT: June 16th—

I would like to add the following to the Kevin & Kell page:

—> Fenton: Oh, right. Torches for the canivores' fondue...pitchforks to feed the herbivores.

— EDIT: June 17th—

More contribution, this time for PROGENCY's section of Characters.Sentinels Of The Multiverse:

PROGENY

Eons ago, a mysterious object crashed into Earth and fell dormant in the Earth's core. Now, events have caused PROGENY to awaken, and rise to the surface of the Earth for two objectives: Lay waste to all it sees, and prepare the Earth for the arrival of it's master...

PROGENY's deck is filled with various Scion cards, each one allowing PROGENY to channel different elemental powers, granting it several advantages over the heroes.

  • Armor Piercing: Obvious Futility lets him ignore damage reduction granted to the heroes via armor.
  • Elemental Powers:
  • Expy: A robot made of liquid metal capable of shapeshifting that does not stop no matter what the heroes throw at it? PROGENY is an alien T-1000.
  • Implacable Man: Nothing will stop PROGENY from completing it's mission, and trying to stop it will only draw it's ire towards you.
    • Gameplay-wise, Obvious Futility makes all damage he does irreducible damage in addition to granting him some damage reduction.
  • Stance System: PROGENY's major deck trick is it's scion cards, which deal a small amount of damage when played, and grant PROGENY perks.
  • Super-Speed: It can keep up with Tachyon.
  • The Voiceless: PROGENY does not talk, with makes it more alien than it already is.

~Conservative Pip: That's not how you submit an example here. For the sake of education, I'll work with it, though.

  1. The first word in a sentence should be capitalized.
  2. A clause started with "for" should end in a comma.
  3. Quotes that incorporate an entire sentence should be delimited by commas and have closing punctuation inside the quotation marks.
  4. Names of works should be italicized, but we don't ruthlessly enforce that in casual writing, like on the fora.

For Weebl & Bob, I feel that Cloudcuckoolander should be listed and say, "Jonti Picking's comedy style is so weird; it makes Pinkie Pie look sane."

Now, the correction submission style is to write the actual example as you'd want it entered on the wiki article.

Weebl & Bob:

  • Cloudcuckoolander: Jonti Picking's comedy style is so weird; it makes Pinkie Pie look sane.

There's not much to nitpick about the grammar of the example itself, but it's also a ZCE. Explain what, exactly, makes the comedy style weird. It's also weird that you reference a character from a different franchise entirely, unless I am mistaken about what Weebl & Bob is.

If someone could add this to PROGENY'S section on the Characters.Sentinels Of The Multiverse page that would be great:

PROGENY

  • The Dragon: To the Cosmic Entity.
  • Generic Doomsday Villain: PROGENY's main motivation is to destroy everything it can and prepare the Earth for the arrival of it's boss: the Cosmic Entity.

[up][up] That fails as an example in a number of areas. First, it doesn't explain anything about the actual supposed research failure. Second, it contradicts itself by stating that it's justified. Third, it uses the execrable "partially justified" word vomit. So, no dice.

Oh, and for bonus negative points, it misuses a pothole to Did Not Do the Bloody Research. For triple bonus negative points, it contains the implied assumption that a children's comic strip author ought to be an authority on paleontology, although I suppose that if Watterson feels that way about his own work, it could count.

Technically, it misuses markup as noted above [up]; grammatically, "Because" should not be capitalized in the second sentence: potholes do not create a sentence break.

I would say, "Jonti Picking's comedy style is so weird, random, and non-sequitur that it makes Pinkie Pie look sane." You got your commas and semicolons mixed up, and using "that" instead of the comma makes more sense there.

I still wonder what MLP has to do with this work. Why that particular comparison?

#2087:

  • The Breaking the Fourth Wall example for Puzzle & Dragons is fine.
  • Gonna Need More X: "Bat" does not need to be capitalized; it is not a proper noun. Your use of punctuation around the quotation is incorrect; since it is a direct quote, you must do it like so: ...resulting in Kevin snarking, "We're gonna need a smaller church."
  • Torches and Pitchforks: You have some tense problems here. Examples should be written in present tense: After Lindesfarne discovers Fenton's mother is a vampire bat... This would also be a Subverted Trope example.
  • In the description for PROGENY, you don't need a comma in "to awaken and rise...". "for two objectives" should read "with two objectives". You misuse "it's"/"its" again, and you don't need a comma to separate a list with only two items.
  • Elemental Powers should not be used in that way. You don't indent subtropes beneath supertropes. Just list each of the tropes individually.
  • Those subtrope examples are ZCEs. Explain what each card does.
  • The Expy example incorrectly links to the film article (unless it's a redlink placeholder for a future article).
  • Implacable Man misuses "it's"/"its" twice, and has an improperly indented second bullet beneath it. Either it's two examples or one example.
  • Stance System fails to explain how the trope applies, and misuses "it's"/"its".
  • Super-Speed violates the "example should not refer to other examples for context" rule.
  • The Voiceless: You used "with" when you meant "which". The sentence is also redundant and should probably read, "which makes it seem more alien than it already is."

Edited as per Fighteer advice.

I would like to have this this example added to the real life section of the HiveMind. mind article under shared consciousness.

  • Scientists have managed to connect the brains of animals like macaques. Three macaques were wired together and then put in control of a virtual realty arm and tasked to pick up a virtual reality ball. The brain patterns of the three macaques started to complement each other giving them better control of the computer simulation then any of of the individual monkeys. An earlier test with two connected rats also showed that one rat could react to the pain the other wired rat felt.

[up] Please link to the article you want to add examples to. Hive Mind in this case.

There are two spelling errors in your post: it's "shared consciousness", not "shared conscious", and it's "complement", not "compliment", in that instance. I'd like some input from other tropers as to whether that's really an example of Hive Mind.

@Fighteer: I fixed what you pointed out, and also added a few more tropes for PROGENY.

Kevin & Kell page:

—> Fenton: Oh, right. Torches for the canivores' fondue...pitchforks to feed the herbivores.

Sentinels of the Multiverse

PROGENY

Eons ago, a mysterious object crashed into Earth and fell dormant in the Earth's core. Now, recent events have caused PROGENY to awaken and rise to the surface of the Earth with two objectives: Lay waste to all it sees, and prepare the Earth for the arrival of it's master...

PROGENY's deck is filled with various Scion cards, each one allowing PROGENY to channel different elemental powers and gain certain advantages over the heroes.

  • Armor Piercing: Obvious Futility lets him ignore damage reduction granted to the heroes via armor.
  • The Dragon: PROGENY was created to serve the Cosmic Entity, and preparing Earth for it's arrival is PROGENY's only concern.
  • Elemental Powers: PROGENY can shapeshift into different elemental forms: Scion of Flame, Scion of Frost, Scion of the Storm, and Scion of Blight. Only only do the scions grant PROGENY advantages while they remain on the field, they each let PROGENY deal a small amount of damage of the respective type to the heroes when played. In addition to his scion forms, it can combine the multiple scions and be made of different elements at the same time.
  • Expy: A robot made of liquid metal capable of shapeshifting that does not stop no matter what the heroes throw at it? PROGENY is an alien T-1000.
  • Generic Doomsday Villain: PROGENY's only motivation is to destroy everything around him. The reason is so it can prepare the earth for the arrival of the Cosmic Entity, but what that exactly means is a mystery.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: PROGENY's eyes are always glowing. What color the glow is depends on what form he currenty taking, with purple being the default color.
  • Implacable Man: Nothing will stop PROGENY from completing its mission, and trying to stop it will only draw its ire towards you. Gameplay-wise, Obvious Futility makes all damage it does irreducible damage in addition to granting him some damage reduction.
  • Purple Is Powerful: PROGENY's default color is purple, as it's eyes glow that color when it is in it's humanoid form or when it is using electricity. Even its character cards use purple for the text boxes. Fitting for one of the few level 4 difficulty villains in the game (the other three being The Chairman, the Matriarch, and Iron Legacy)
  • Supernatural Is Purple: PROGENY is an alien liquid metal robot bent on causing nothing but destruction with it's default eye color and lightning bolts being purple.
  • Stance System: PROGENY's major deck trick is its Scion forms, which causes PROGENY to take on the traits of an element. Gameplay wise, each Scion deals a small amount of damage when it is played, and then provides a constant boost for as long as the card remains in play. Unlike other characters with their own Stance System, PROGENY can mix and match his Scions, forcing the heroes to either adapt or die. Fortunetly PROGENY has a limit to how many Scions he can have at any one time (unless you're playing Advanced Mode)
  • The Voiceless: PROGENY does not talk, which makes it seem more alien than it already is.
