It depends. For some games, nearly all characters are playble but not all of them will receive the same focus if the game is narrative-based. I do think that for that game Zhao is still too prominent to count. He's not as focused on as the other core party members but it's a small team in a very large game so he gets more than a lot of NP Cs.

Deleted line(s) 50 (click to see context) :

  • Almost everyone loves Himiko Yumeno. Common reasons for this include both her appearance as a Moe Cute Witch and counting with a talent that had been highly requested by fans, and her Chuunibyou and Cold Ham personality. Fans also like that she goes through Character Development and learns to be more expressive, following Tenko's advice before her demise. It also helps that unlike characters in the previous installments, Ishimaru and Hiyoko, she actually gets to complete her character arc and is not outright murdered in the very next chapter; in fact, she survives the Killing Game.

Reason: Himiko is a very polarizing character. There’s a lot of hate for her online and this is also coming from personal experience. She’s a Base-Breaking Character easily.

I ended up deleting Himiko under the Ensemble Darkhorse page for Danganronpa a while ago. I want to hear any potential arguments for why she qualifies because from my personal experience there’s a lot who despise her for being an annoying brat who won’t drop the wizard gimmick even in important moments like the second trial. She definitely does has fans for her development and relationship with Tenko, but just like nearly every character in V3, there’s a vocal hatebase, especially from people who dislike the game and cast as a whole.

I think it's the fact that she does become better in the game and her character development improves her previous gimmick enough that it's not annoying anymore. Or at least that's what i think.

I honestly have seen a lot of like about the character.

Due to unfortunate events, i will continue to exist until further notice.

Honestly, I feel like nearly all of the examples on EnsembleDarkhorse.Danganronpa are misuse. Most are just "character that people like", missing the part where they're disproportionately popular for their role in the plot.

If it were up to me? Any of the 16 main students in each game should automatically be disqualified as they don't count as minor characters. Even those who die early on have a major presence in the few chapters they're in.

She was probably a lot more liked originally when the game first came out, but like a lot of V3 characters, she got more hate over time. In this popularity poll, she only got a 5.9. https://www.reddit.com/r/danganronpa/comments/pvuf5t/ultimate_danganronpa_character_poll_results/

[up][up]I understand that point. However, there's the fact that the 16 characters all have varying degrees of focus depending on which die first.

First guy who dies is obviously not gonna be as important as a guy who makes it out alive.

Due to unfortunate events, i will continue to exist until further notice.

I'd say it depends. For example, I don't think the first Blackened of V3 really counts as a minor character since she's a Decoy Protagonist who you play as for most of the chapter. Likewise with the second victim of THH, since Chihiro ends up having an important influence on the plot from beyond the grave thanks to Alter Ego.

So here's my analysis of EnsembleDarkhorse.Danganronpa:

    Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
  • Kiyotaka Ishimaru is the definition of an Unpopular Popular Character. While most of his classmates find him to be an irritating Determinator, he has earned a spot in the hearts of many players for being a Woobie with Adorkable tendencies (such as the "Forget Beam" or mistaking Sakura for a boy in the first Class Trial). The effort he makes to try and keep the group united during the Deadly Game is something that is also highly appreciated by fans. His Mr. Fanservice moment is not ignored by some of his fans either, as he's shown to be quite muscular under his school uniform. Another factor is his Odd Friendship with Mondo Owada, which has a lot of Ho Yay thrown in and has made him attract the attention of yaoi artists. It is not a stretch to say that people feel disappointed with his death at the hands of Hifumi and Celeste, which seems to come out of nowhere (and right after it seemed like he would be getting some Character Development). His fans also do not take well the fact that no one seems to care much when he is killed (Heck, Hina cries over Hifumi's dead body but completely ignores Taka, who is lying dead a few centimeters away from Hifumi) and that the rest of the students act like he never even existed in the first place after the third trial. This has surprised the writers themselves, who have stated that Ishimaru was meant to come off as an unlikeable character, provided that the player didn't do his Free Time Events.
I'm of the opinion that the main students should be cut, but this example at least explains that he's disproportionately popular compared to his role and what the writers intended. However, he does survive for half the game, which I feel is too big a role to count.
  • Chihiro Fujisaki is also one of the most popular characters in the first game thanks to his status as a Moe Wholesome Crossdresser, being one of the smartest students next to Kyoko, and having a Small Role, Big Impact, because even if he dies early in the story (in chapter 2) his creation Alter Ego is one of the reasons why the surviving students were able to escape, and because it also saves Makoto from being wrongfully executed for a murder he did not commit. His role even extends to Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair where he was one of the people who created the Neo World Program (a.k.a. where the game took place at), and the "father" of Usami and AI Chiaki. His Hidden Depths are also something to take into account: even if he knows that he is physically weak, he is determined to make a change for the better if necessary, all of this coming from the guy who wouldn't hurt a mosquito because it may have a family.
I think Chihiro is too important to the plot to qualify, but he does die early on which might make him count.
  • Aoi Asahina tends to be the character that gets her Free Time Events filled the quickest, and not without reason. Being a Ms. Fanservice helped, but her quirky personality of being a Big Eater Passionate Sports Girl who really cares for her friends (especially Sakura) while also having a very cute Ship Tease with Makoto in her final FTE of having to pretend to be his girlfriend who then convinces her to be herself, many people were happy that she is one of the survivors of the Killing Game. Also helps that although she gets tagged along with Toko and Yasuhiro later on, she's often the Only Sane Woman of them, while also often following along the trials easier than those two. And in Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School, she participates in another killing game, and her Fake Kill Scare really affected many anime watchers at that point, showing how many fans really liked her. Many were happy that she survives this one too.
Aoi survives the whole game and plays a role in the anime too; this example makes no attempt to paint her as more popular than she should be.
  • It's difficult to find people who dislike Sakura Ogami. She's presented as a Gentle Giant Action Girl, who can also have her moments if made angry enough, usually by misstreating Aoi, and overall one of the most helpful and nicest students in the game. Fans feel bad for her as the Mastermind blackmails her into becoming The Mole and drive people into distrusting her, but despite of all of this, she chooses to take her own life to put a stop to the Deadly Game, and she succeds, as the remaining students don't kill anyone.
Sakura stays alive for most of the game and is important to the plot.
  • Mondo's brother Daiya Owada seems to enjoy quite a popularity, even if his contribution is just Death by Origin Story, only seen in flashbacks.
Finally we have a character who's actually minor, but this doesn't do a very good job at explaining his popularity, just saying that he is and expecting us to believe it.

    Danganronpa Zero
  • Isshiki Madarai gets this to an extent, as despite being Ryouko's major "antagonist", his plot is the least important to the story. What makes this rather awkward is that "Madarai" is actually 8 separate characters, each barely getting any focus on their own, and "Isshiki" is the only one of them not actually met in the story as he died before the story began, but is the name his younger brothers all use by default when trying to get someone who knows what really happened to him to panic and slip up.
I haven't read Danganronpa Zero yet, so I'm not sure. However, this doesn't say that he's a popular character.

    Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
  • Ibuki Mioda. While she only lives for three chapters and is mostly a comedy relief character, people both in and out of universe love her for her upbeat and cheerful, Large Ham, Cloudcuckoolander personality, her great sense of hearing which helps to identify Teruteru as the murderer during the first Class Trial, and her attempts to hold the group together by organizing certain events, which clearly contrast with her awesome Quincy Punk design. Her death at the hands of Mikan marks the game taking a turn for the darker.
Three chapters means she's around for half the game, which I think is too long to count as minor.
  • Gundham Tanaka is this thanks to his Large Ham personality and the fact that he, the Ultimate Breeder, speaks with Antiquated Linguistics and dresses and presents himself as an Evil Overlord who treats his four pet hamsters as demons called "The Four Dark Devas of Destruction" (though to be fair, they aren't exactly harmless) that secretly wants to have friends. He is also liked for being one of the killers with the most sympathetic motives for murder in the franchise, as both him and his victim, Nekomaru, agreed to fight each other to death in order to avoid the rest of the students from starving to death in the funhouse (And while he denies that this was his motive, he tells Blatant Lies in order to push his Evil Overlord persona).
Gundham is around for more than half of the game with a good presence in most chapters.
  • Nekomaru Nidai is well-liked in his own right for his boisterous personality, being an even bigger ham than Gundham, his Taking the Bullet for Akane (and his subsequent Emergency Transformation into Mechamaru) and the implication that he willingly agreed to Gundham's Suicide Pact in order to save the rest of the students' lives.
    Same as above.
  • People like Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu for starting up with as a character with a Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon who states that he has no problems in killing anyone in order to escape and has next to no redeeming features initially (but in reality, he wants to get close to the rest of the group, as Lampshaded by Chiaki), but eventually breaks down after Peko murders Mahiru when he was intending to kill her himself after Monokuma frames her for covering up the murder of his sister Nastumi, leading to her execution (which almost results in his own death when he attempted to save her from it, but failing). Fuyuhiko decides to start all over again with the rest of the students to make up for how he treated them, to the point of committing seppuku when Hiyoko calls him out for Mahiru's murder, and gains a fair amount of Character Development. He loses any Hate Sink traits he had and becomes genuinely reliable and good-natured. He is also the most liked among the surviving students, as people are divided with Sonia, Akane and Kazuichi for being relatively static characters — and in the latter's case for his creepy obssession with the former.
Fuyuhiko is a survivor and the example doesn't try to portray him as a minor character.
  • Peko Pekoyama is rather well liked in her own right, mainly for having one of the most badass talents in the series, her relationship with Fuyuhiko, as well as her backstory, which reveals that she doesn't even think of herself as a person. Once she is caught for Mahiru's murder, and her plan to get Fuyuhiko out fails, she doesn't fight her upcoming death, just tells everyone that she is sorry that Mahiru had to die and requests for there to be no more murders, something that very few culprits actually do. Her execution is widely regarded as one of saddest in the series as it both plays into her view of herself as a tool, but she also ends up maiming Fuyuhiko, and it's implied that she spent her final moments shielding Fuyuhiko from the robots. In addition, her personality is surprisingly very sweet and polite, making for a unique contrast between her very badass talent and her soft gentle heart, and her love for fluffy animals is downright adorable.
She dies in Chapter 2, so she's around for a third of the game; not sure if that makes her count as minor.
  • Fuyuhiko's sister (who is only ever mentioned, only actually being seen dead in a picture during Chapter 2) has people who roleplay her as well as a decent amount of fanart. There's also the somewhat-popular fanon of her given name being Fuyuki (to match her brother), although Danganronpa 3 revealed her name to be Natsumi.
Finally, we get an example that explains both the character's popularity and how small their role is. See, this is what a good Ensemble Dark Horse example needs to look like.

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School
  • Seiko Kimura is absolutely loved by fans. This is all thanks to her Creepy Cute design, her tragic backstory and being one of the most useful characters in Future Arc, as it is thanks to her cure medicine that Kyoko was able to survive, and although despite being received with a Broken Base and a bit of an Ass Pull, people were glad it was Seiko of all people who allowed Kyoko to survive. The fact that Ruruka Ando constantly antagonizes her has contributed into increasing the hate towards Ruruka big time. It is safe to say that Seiko is one of the few things in Danganronpa 3 that has been universally acclaimed by the fanbase, if not the only one.
It's been a while since I watched the anime, so I may be wrong, but I remember Seiko being an important character who stays relevant even after her death due to making Kyoko's antidote.
  • Izuru Kamukura. Despite being a major character in previous installments, he only actually shows up in the second half of the Despair arc. But in that short time, he solidified his popularity through his badass takedowns of Junko and Mukuro, his interesting and tragic relationship with Chiaki, and having his characterization develop and unveil in a way that kept the awesome and removed the evil.
Characters are judged based on their impact throughout the whole series, not individual works. Izuru playing a smaller role here doesn't diminish how important he is overall.
  • The Great Gozu saw a fair increase in popularity after being revealed as a Gentle Giant. Many fans love his design gimmick as well. The first episode only increased his popularity, as he showed himself to be not only supportive of Makoto, but also a colossal badass. Not to mention that in Episode 2, he fought Sakakura and essentially won.
Like I said, I haven't seen this anime in a while, but I kinda remember Gozu not being super important to the plot overall and dying early.
  • While still being a complete enigma, the Ultimate Impostor has gained more popularity after episode 5 of Side:Despair showed that he's actually a nice person more explicitly than in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, as demonstrated when he helped out Mitarai and was nice to Mikan. Even fans who otherwise hate the arc agree that his development was a positive.
I don't remember enough to comment here, my memory is pretty bad.
  • Aiko Umesawa in episode 7 of Side:Despair was an instant favorite for her cute appearance and many were upset once she was almost instantly killed off in the killing game, especially since her death was a really cruel Yank the Dog's Chain. She even makes an appearence in the OVA Super Danganronpa 2.5: Nagito Komaeda and the Destroyer of the World, possibly due to her popularity.
Now this is a clear-cut valid example, Pikachu Girl was extremely popular despite dying in the same episode she's introduced.
  • Although to a lesser extent than Aiko, Ryota Someya gets some appreciation for being the only one to make the very reasonable suggestion of attacking Junko and Mukuro instead of each other. It also helps that he has a fairly cute design, and the fact that it's implied that his talent is making plush toys endeared him to many fans.
Again, this is a good example. It just could do a better job of explaining that like the above, he dies right after his introduction.
  • Koichi Kizakura. One of the calmer and nicer members of the Future Foundation who not only did not accuse Makoto of being the traitor, but also made a good guess on who it is. He guessed Miaya just "on a hunch" and was right that she was suspicious since she was really a robot from Monaca. His moments with Kyoko, being good all along, and Episode 8 establishing he was quite the badass really solidified this trope. So when he died, it was naturally met with tears and uproar like the deaths of the other examples of this trope.
I remember Koichi being an important character overall.
  • Some of the members of the Future Foundation's Ultimate Task Force have captured the fans' eyes and interest due to their notable appearances and talents (despite no explicit explanation of what said talents are until Volume 4's release). Particular examples include the girl with the long nails who was after Saionjinote , the man with the fan and game piecesnote , and the lanky guy who breathed fire at Akanenote .
This does a good job of explaining that these are minor characters who became popular.

    Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony
  • Even if she is a Decoy Protagonist and overall only has one chapter focused on her, Kaede Akamatsu is one of the most beloved characters in this entry of the series, being Loved by All both in and out of universe. These reasons include her being a much more straight forward protagonist than Makoto and Hajime as she actually attempts to lead the group throughout the Killing Game and try to make sure that they all stay as friends ever after, even going as far as to try to kill the Mastermind since the beginning, only for her plan to fail due to the mastermind already having knowledge of her plan, and said Mastermind also using it to her advantage to murder Rantaro and incriminate Kaede of a Murder by Mistake, having her executed. Kaede also has a Small Role, Big Impact in the plot of Danganronpa V3, as her death is what motivates Shuichi Saihara, the real protagonist, to be more confident in himself. The love people have for Kaede often lead to some fans seeing Shuichi as a Replacement Scrappy of her and stating they'd rather have had Kaede as the true protagonist, which seems to be the case in-universe ("This guy should have died instead of Kaede").
I'm split on this. She dies in the first chapter, but she does a lot in her short screentime due to being the Decoy Protagonist. As such, it feels like her popularity is deserved despite not being around very long.
  • The same goes for Rantaro Amami. In spite of being only present in one chapter and being even more Out of Focus than most other first victims, he's surprisingly well-liked by fans for his mysteriousness and being a Cool Big Bro, having managed to beat out several characters who have bigger roles (such as K1-B0, who's no slouch in the popularity polls either), placing 6th place in the popularity poll. Fans have been clamoring for a spin-off starring him because of his interesting backstory, and it would appear fans will get their wish, as Kodaka has mentioned plans for a spin-off starring Rantaro in an interview.
I'm still iffy on including main students, but I think this is an okay example overall.
  • Gonta Gokuhara is liked thanks to his status as the Gentle Giant, like Sakura and Nekomaru before him, having a Big Brother Instinct towards all of the other students (despite being the youngest overall), and him being a Tarzan Boy whose goal in life is to become a gentleman. Fans did not take his execution very well, and neither the circumstances surrounding it (he was tricked by Kokichi into murdering Miu, who was trying to kill Kokichi herself. Needless to say, Kokichi, despite hiding it, regrets sending both of them to their deaths).
Gonta survives for most of the game, he's not a minor character at all.
  • While being somewhat of a Base-Breaking Character for a minority, most fans have taken up a liking for Miu Iruma thanks to her... interesting personality, her useful talent, her interactions with K1-B0 and her Large Ham persona, which she uses to hide the fact that she is actually insecure and really shy on the inside, plus she also tried to help catch the Mastermind early on (helping Shuichi and Kaede by making camera for them) and was distraught when Kaede died. Fans also enjoy her Hidden Depths as to why she wanted to become an inventor, and she has definitely been better received than previous perverted characters in the franchise, in which their tendencies, which don't have a real explanation unlike Miu, got to the point where they got grating. This surprised Kodaka himself, who said that while he personally liked her, he didn't expect Miu to be so well-liked by the fanbase.
Not only is Base-Breaking Character mutually exclusive with Ensemble Dark Horse, Miu survives for more than half of the game and plays an important role in the plot overall.
  • Ryoma Hoshi is this especially to western audiences. He has definitely been way better received than the past Non-Standard Character Design characters Hifumi and Teruteru (both of whom were received as The Scrappy in their respective games due to their characterization as perverts, something what Ryoma lacks entirely), because he has a way more serious personality than either of them, is a Kindhearted Cat Lover, and is a Badass Adorable with a Dark and Troubled Past who was able to take out Yakuza members with a custom-made steel tennis ball all by himself. Most fans felt like They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character by having him as the victim of Chapter 2, and plenty of fan works depict him as a survivor alongside Kaede.
Again, main student, dies a third of the way in. This at least explains his popularity, so it boils down to whether or not "Chapter 2 victim" counts as a minor role.
  • While most of the Monokubs are some of the most hated characters both in and out of universe, mainly Monokid and Monophanie, Monodam is the exception to the rule. Reasons for this include him not talking as much as his siblings do, resulting in him being less of an annoyance, killing both Monokid and Monosuke during the first and second executions respectively (With Monokid being as a form of revenge of him being bullied by him) and him taking over Monokuma's role as the headmaster in chapter 3, which even includes the "Monokuma Theater" segments! Unfortunately, Monokuma regains his position and his remaining siblings begin bullying him, which causes him to destroy himself in the third trial's culprit's execution.
I would be okay with keeping this example, since he's not super plot-relevant and stands out among an unpopular group.
  • K1-B0 has become this thanks to his unique character design and likable, if somewhat gullible, personality, coupled with his unusual talent helped him stand out quite a bit. And that's without accounting for his role in Chapters 5 and 6, where he finally takes the central stage and has numerous Big Damn Heroes moments in the process.
Keebo is a major character throughout the entire game.

Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls
  • Hiroko Hagakure became very popular after she was first announced. In game, she does very little important to the story, but her attitude and helpfulness makes her very endearing. She's also the only adult character from the game to be present in Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp, with new sprites, to boot.
This explains her small role and large popularity.
  • Of the Hit List targets, Mondo's right-hand man Takemichi Yukimaru seems to have gained some noticeable popularity, mostly due to a large amount of fans who speculate that he's gay or asexual.
    This is another okay example.
  • Another Hit List character would be Takaaki Ishimaru, mainly for being the father of one of the fandom's most popular characters, Kiyotaka Ishimaru.
This one kind of lacks context. He's Kiyotaka's father, but that shouldn't automatically make him popular, so it would need more expansion on how much fans like him.

    Danganronpa Kirigiri
  • The Norman's hotel crew are beloved by fans for their quirky personalities and interactions with each other. Nanamura, Minase and Mifune are especially loved.
I have not read this novel so I don't know if they're minor characters.
  • Copycat, a minor character featured in Volume 3 is surprisingly well-liked by fans despite never speaking any actual dialogue, thanks to her interesting design, gimmick and implied characterization.
This hits all the required notes for an example.

    Danganronpa Togami
  • Hiroyuki is this among the new characters, thanks to being an awesome Meta Guy with easily some of the series' funniest lines.
I have not read this novel either, it uses the "is this" Word Cruft and doesn't explain how small his role is.
  • Aloysius Pennyworth, Byakuya's Battle Butler, is almost unanimously agreed to be the best thing about Vol.2, thanks to being an amazing badass whose antics slip out from absurd into pure Crazy Is Cool.
Again, this doesn't explain that he has a small role.

I was the one who put Aoi, since even then she doesn't get much focus for appearing that much. However, yeah she's rather important for appearing in the two games.

Seiko, i have doubts. She does get an episode for her and Ruruka's relationship, mostly, but i would say that she doesn't get that much screentime overall, and after her death she does not appear afterwards (not even in flashbacks), unlike Chihiro who does get to appear albeit as his AI.

Due to unfortunate events, i will continue to exist until further notice.

I know I'm a month late to the above discussion. I try to avoid this thread because arguing here is like ramming my head into a brick wall and it gets painful. But I am going to make one more try.

EDH is not intended to be restricted to minor characters only. It is the dark horse of the ensemble. It's in the page title, it's in the image, it's in the description, it's in most of the examples.

Cutting a character because they're "around" for the whole duration of a work is the most ridiculous reason I have seen yet. It says nothing about how important their role is. Do you think Firenze (Harry Potter) qualifies as a major character because he survives the entire series?

[up][up] Uh, it actually is for minor or at least less important characters, tho. "Dark horse of the ensemble" doesn't mean anything as a phrase; it's the character that becomes more popular than their role in the series would suggest, so while it's not just "minor characters" it can't be for any character that plays a major role since they're usually supposed to be super popular.

[up][up][up] There is a difference between a minor character who is always around and a major character who is ways around. It's easy to tell the difference. A major or main character who is always can't be this to my understanding but a supporting or minor character who is always there can be. This trope is for minor or supporting characters who are surprisingly popular.

On this page, one entry lists a character as an Ensemble Dark Horse while also acknowledging that he is a Base-Breaking Character. The person who re-added it makes the argument that the two tropes aren't mutually exclusive, even though the Ensemble Dark Horse page states "compare and contrast Base-Breaking Character". Is their reasoning valid?

The entry in question:

  • Even though he isn't without controversy, Niles may be one of the most unexpectedly popular characters at this point. When he was first revealed, he didn't get much fanfare. Once it was revealed he'd be the Gay Option for a male Avatar, fans started to take a liking to him. His... interesting supports, particularly his one with Camilla, have resulted in a lot of (positive) notoriety. It doesn't hurt that he's pretty much the only bowman for quite a while on the Nohr route, where archers are very useful. This reflects in the poll results; he was ranked 7th for the most popular game in the Fates poll and peaked at 16th place on the first Choose Your Legends poll, which in turn earned him his spot as a DLC character in Fire Emblem Warriors.

Adding my two cents:

  • Kiyotaka Ishimaru - a bit iffy, but I'd say he can stay. He's easily among the most popular characters of this game. Chapter 1 focuses on Makoto and Sayaka, others get rather surface-level introductions and aren't developed much more (with exceptions of the likes of Leon and Kyoko who get a bit more than surface level introduction). He then gets more focus in Chapter 2 thanks to his friendship with Mondo, but unlike Mondo he's not involved in the case. He then spends most of Chapter 3 in Heroic BSoD and he dies in this chapter.
  • Chihiro Fujisaki - another one of the most popular characters of this game. I'm personally fine with those who died prior to Chapter 3 being listed (Kaede excluded). Especially here. DR1 was the shortest game, meaning the least screentime potential. Chihiro was one of those who didn't get to shine in Chapter 1. And he doesn't even get much focus before his death in Chapter 2 either. Most of his focus comes post-mortem. And I wouldn't count Alter Ego's screentime as his.
  • Peko Pekoyama - Again, I'd say those who died in Chapter 1-2 (even 3 as a victim) are fair game (unless they're Kaede). Especially since Peko is The Stoic, so she rarely speaks, giving her very little screentime before she's revealed as the culprit of Chapter 2.
  • Seiko Kimura - definitely can stay. She's easily the most popular new character and one of very few aspects of DR3 to be generally considered as entirely positive. She lasted 5 episodes, had 1 episode in Despair Arc, a cameo in the OVA (and was mentioned in the finale thanks to being Not Too Dead to Save the Day if you want to count it). That's 7/8 episodes (depending if you only count physical appearances) out of 25. Out of which only Episode 4 of Despair and Episode 5 of Future give her Character Focus (Episode 4 of Future also sorta does, but focuses her screentime on fight scenes with Izayoi, which also get outshined by Tengan and Munakata's fight scenes). And much like the entire Class 76th Trio, she doesn't really have any connection to the main cast (at best interacting with Nagito in Despair). I'd say that's minor enough.
  • I'd also want to argue that Koichi Kizakura should either be brought back or we should at least start a debate about bringing him back. He's one of the most popular new characters. He survives 8 out of 12 episodes of Future and generally appears in 15 out of 25 episodes (7 in Future since Episode 7 focuses on UDG instead, 6 in Despair, and the OVA)... Sure, it seems important, but you gotta keep in mind the content of his appearances. He only had a silent cameo in the OVA. Throughout Despair Arc, he only gets minor appearances. Sure, Episode 1 and Episode 11 are important (the former explains why he's replaced with Chisa, the latter finally shows his promise to Jin). But even then, both of those get very little screentime. This continues throughout Future Arc, where he usually gets a couple of seconds per episode. Episode 8 is the only episode that truly gives him Character Focus. And even here it's only for the first half, as he dies halfway through and the rest of the episode focuses on Kyoko solving the mystery behind Izayoi's death (though he is mentioned by Ryota and Kyoko at the end). Sure, he had the connection to the main cast, but being the one who took Kirigiris' photo isn't much. Then again, he did save Kyoko's life... But to me, he comes off as a side character who sticks around for a while, usually getting a one-liner or two per episode. Is he really too important to be listed?
  • Ultimate Imposter - this could be another debatable case, but I'm personally in favor of leaving him. The entire DR2 cast gets Demoted to Extra (aside from the main trio and Mikan to a lesser extent), and while he's definitely right behind Mikan in terms of screentime and importance, it's still not too much. He only gets Episode 5 as Character Focus. Then there's a single scene of focus in Episode 1, like everyone else. A brief chat with Chiaki outside of class in Episode 2, a short scene of letting Mikan know about Ryota's disappearance in Episode 7, a brief moment of overreacting to Nagito knowing where she is in Episode 8, revealing his true face in Episode 9, and hugging Ryota in the finale. Rest are minor appearances in the background as a group with his classmates. That's 1 episode of focus and 6 episodes of one brief scene per episode, out of all 25 episodes. Even if you judge based on the entire series and not just DR3, he still died first in the game, even if after getting some focus as The Leader.
  • While I'm also somewhat torn, I'm leaning more towards removing Kaede Akamatsu. She was the protagonist for the demo, the Prologue, and Chapter 1 (minus its last parts). Sure, it might seem like not much compared to the remaining five chapters and Epilogue as Shuichi, but keep in mind V3 is the longest game. She's still had several hours worth of being a protagonist. Not just that, but this time was spent focused mostly on her. Kaede being The Leader and trying to fight against the killing game is possibly the biggest focus of Chapter 1. She's also The Lost Lenore to Shuichi and gets frequent mentions post-mortem and has a solid effect on his Character Development. I feel like, in spite of dying early on, she's too much of a major character to be counted. She's easily one of the five main characters of this entry next to Shuichi, Kokichi, Maki, and Kaito, and that's with her early death.
  • Ryoma Hoshi - again, I'm personally fine with leaving those who died in Chapters 1-2 (or even 3 as victims specifically), Kaede excluded. Ryoma is also the least focused-on student in V3, with Kaede being the initial protagonist and Rantaro appearing in several flashbacks and his message appearing in Chapter 4 and 6, the latter of which also re-opens his case and reveals his connection to The Reveal of the game.

Others I haven't mentioned I agree with and have nothing more to add.

Felt the need to discuss the entries on the Parasite (2019) page;

  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • In a film already full of fantastic performances, Park So-dam as the cool, competent Ki-jeong has been particularly well-received, complete with her "Jessica Jingle" ("Jessica, only child, Illinois, Chicago...") reaching borderline meme status. Main character, though she receives less focus than her brother does.
    • Bong's English interpreter for the full promotion cycle, Sharon Choi, became the real-life example as well.note  Real person, not a character in the film.
    • Park Yeon-kyo, the ditzy matriarch of the Park family, is important in the story mainly as the Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense enabler for the Kim family. But many viewers have cited Cho Yeo-jeong's portrayal of her as a highlight of the film, giving Mrs. Park some charm as well as effectively playing her cluelessness for laughs, while also giving hints of a darker side to her personality. She might qualify; given that the Kim family are the protagonists, while the Park family are essentially (important) side characters, but she's still a character of relative importance to the plot, so I'm not completely certain.

I could possibly contend that the sister-character's popularity outshines her relative importance, but I would also say that this is an Intended Audience Reaction; she was supposed to be charming to the audience to make the ending work.

The middle one can be cut.

As for the final one, the reasoning is... solid, but I don't think she's particularly popular? She's objectively the least malicious adult in the movie and well-acted, but I don't think she's as much of a breakout as she would need to be to qualify.

So i got a character from Homestar Runner:

  • Strong Bad started out as a villain who was always doomed to lose to Homestar. Now he's debatably the most popular character, and definitely one of the most recognisable. By 2003, he had become the face of the website.

Yeah, he doesn't for this. Even before he hit it big Strong Bad was still heavily prominent as the shows Big Bad who would constantly annoy everyone. He fits Breakout Character farmore.

From YMMV.The Octonauts:

  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Of the main cast, Peso and Shellington are very popular among older audiences.
      • Peso is way too major to possibly be an example. Shellington is at least second-tier, so if his popularity eclipsed Barnacles, Kwazii, or Peso then he could likely count, but I don't think it does.
    • Shellington's sister Pearl and nephew Periwinkle is similarly well-beloved, especially with the release of Octonauts: Above & Beyond, in which they have much larger roles.
      • As-written, this comes across as "well, they're somewhat popular." Needs more detail.
    • Calico Jack, Kwazii's legendary pirate grandfather, is a favourite to many older fans. Similarly to Pearl, he was also given a much larger role in Above and Beyond.
      • Ditto.

Found these at YMMV.Slow Damage

  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Among the four art models Towa encounters, Ikuina is easily the most well-liked becausee of his personality, his darker Hidden Depths, and his "euphoric session" with Towa (which is recognized to be one of the Signature Scenes of the visual novel). Many even wish that he had joined the main character line-up as a fifth love interest. since Ikiuna is a fairly major supporting character due to the Euphoric sessions, he doesnt count
    • Much like Gunji and Kiriwar and Virus and Trip, Kotarou and Mayu are fairly popular for their entertaining interactions and for being an interestingly refreshing subversion of what fans expected given the background of the aforementioned two duos. Too major to count
    • Eiji also has fans due to being a sprightly tech nerd and an eccentric explosion enthusiast. The Reveal about him being The Mole for Madarame, Sakaki and the mainland police all around the same time and how he does what he does purely for amusement's sake has only increased his popularity with the fanbase. Sam as above
    • It's hard to find someone who dislikes Igarashi when his cordial and courteous personality leaves no reason for anyone to have a negative opinion of him— something that even applies to the In-Universe cast's opinion of the man. Unsure
    • Rei's trio of friends-slash-Deathmatch teammates are also beloved by fans, especially Western fans, because of how they're both highly camp and very friendly while still being anything but simpering wimps when push comes to shove. Unsure

YMMV.The Cat In The Hat

First one is purely complaining. For context, Mrs. Kwan is the babysitter that Sally and Conrad's mom hired for them, and she’s pretty much asleep for most of the film. The second one with Mr. Humberfloob looks alright though.

Kind of funny how some people use ED entries to complain.

From YMMV.Every Frame A Pause

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Of the EFAP guests, Shadiversity is a bit of an oddball, with his channel's main focus being on weaponry and tactics, with some connection of tactics to film and pure film analysis being few and far in between. Fans loved him for his informative and vast knowledge on weaponry and breaking down of the frequent use of Hollywood Tactics.

Is this about a real life person? Because this trope is No Real Life Examples, Please!. It also doesn't explain how he could be considered an minor or supporting character. Thoughts?
