Just finished Hyouka. The art style was easier to get used to than I was expecting, and of course the production quality was great. On the other hand, the show as a whole came across as kinda...unambitious compared to other KyoAni stuff I've seen. I don't think it'll ever stand out in my memory the way something like MOHS or Clannad does.

Next up is HenNeko. I'm not expecting anything spectacular, but some people seem to like it and it's recent enough that the animation is probably decent. However, before that I plan to watch the two Cardcaptor Sakura movies, since I didn't cover those back when I was watching the TV show.

Watching: The Rankin Bass classic Mad Monster Party. You cannot go wrong with a script by Harvey Kurtzman and terrific performances by Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller.

Note the reference to "veeblefetzers" early in the movie - a telltale sign that this is from the guy who gave us MAD Magazine!

Just finished HenNeko. It was kinda different from what I was expecting, with lots of over-the-top comedy and supernatural stuff (at least in the early episodes, it got more serious towards the end).

Next up is Puella Magi Madoka Magica. It seems I'm the last person on Earth who hasn't seen this yet, but I've heard it's excellent.

I got all of Dragon Ball and DBZ (sans GT, the movies and specials) so I'm taking on the challenge of watching it all.

I'm just over 40 eps into the original show. I still have a 100 left. I pray the anime gods give me strength. tongue

Just finished Puella Magi Madoka Magica, including Rebellion.

My impressions on the TV show before watching Rebellion: Not overall the best anime I've ever seen, probably not even in the top ten. But impressive, and very powerful, very compelling. In particular, the roles of the five main cast- not just their characterization, but what they do, what happens to them, and how that links together causally and thematically over the course of the story- are engineered to a level of perfection virtually unmatched by anything else I've seen, anime or otherwise. This is the kind of show that reminds me why I watch anime, yet also makes me wonder whether everything else will seem a little more shallow and empty after a taste of what is possible.

My impressions on Rebellion: I have the feeling this movie was kind of unnecessary, in the same way that End of Evangelion was unnecessary. However, taken on its own it's pretty good, even as trippy as it is. There are a number of cool and highly unpredictable twists, and unlike End of Evangelion, the ending was actually kinda satisfying too. Also, the animation is commendable, with Homura vs Mami ranking among the best anime fight scenes I've seen to date.

Next up is Nekogami Yaoyorozu. Scheduling it at this point was a fairly deliberate decision as something to wind down with after Madoka Magica, and having now seen the latter, I think that was the right choice.

Just finished watching Nekogami Yaoyorozu. Far from impressive, and mostly pretty forgettable, which is what I was expecting. However, some of the mythological/religious stuff was interesting, as I haven't really seen many animes with such strong shinto elements. Also, Haruka Tomatsu's performance did a lot to keep the show afloat. Part of me is still disappointed that the yuri never went anywhere, though...

Next in the queue is Burn-Up W/Excess, assuming I have the right files. I haven't seen the original Burn-Up movie, but I gather it's not necessary in order to watch W/Excess and Scramble. Again, this seems to be a show that the modern anime crowd generally either haven't seen or don't talk about much, but the few reviews I've happened across sound encouraging.

Just finished Code Geass, which has the most glorious ending of course.

Next up, Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex. Which should be a neat change of pace.

Just finished Burn-Up W/Excess. Pretty mediocre, I've seen much better even from that same era. The good parts of Excess were pretty good, but some episodes (4 and 8 especially) were much weaker than others. The ending was decent, though.

Next up is Girls und Panzer. I'm mostly watching this so that I'll be ready to play World of Tanks, but I've heard it's also well thought of on its own. Anything that's a spiritual successor to Strike Witches sounds like it should be fun.

Just finished watching Girls und Panzer. Not bad, had a lot of pretty standard sports anime tropes including a tournament arc lasting pretty much the entire show. The girls were cute, the animation was quite good, and simply playing such a ridiculous premise straight has a certain charm of its own. On the downside, I didn't feel like they gave me nearly enough time to get to know most of the huge number of characters, to the point where I was kinda just stereotyping each of the Ooarai tank crews as a single character (which, given the way they were set up, may have been the intention). Also, the sport itself seems to be incredibly dangerous, and the participants surviving essentially unharmed (despite sticking their bare heads into the air where tank shells are flying to and fro) seems less a matter of planning and more a matter of deus ex machina.

As an aside: Having finished this show, I have now completed precisely 100 separate anime shows. I can honestly say I had no idea, when I started watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya four and a half years ago, that I would ever come this far. Here's to triple digits; may the next hundred be as entertaining as the last!

Speaking of which, next up is B Gata H Kei. I've heard this is some kind of hilarious ecchi sex comedy, so that sounds like fun. Interestingly, this'll also be the first show I've seen by Hal Film Maker, although I have a number of their other shows queued up.
