General Page Quote Discussion:

Go To

This thread is for general discussion of page quotes, whether to change, move or remove them.

Unused quotes should be put on a Quotes Wiki page (just replace the namespace in the URL of the wiki page you are making a quotes page for with Quotes/) or, if they don't have an article, on Quotes Looking for an Article.

Image captions are discussed elsewhere and have their own thread in the Image Pickin' forum.

That quote has nothing to do with Apocalypse Wow. Any of the suggestions on the quotes page would be superior.

The quotes on the quote page are mostly too lengthy; the only one that isn't has a spoiler. Nevertheless, as they actually have something to do with the trope, I recommend replacing the current Apocalypse Wow quote with one.

Would a shorter section of one of the lengthy quotes work?

This is somewhat tangential to the purpose of this thread, but in regards to no potholes in quotes is there a page with this policy written down, or is it just in statements from staffers in forums or Ask The Tropers?

I ask because I'd like something to point to should I ever get up enough ambition to go hunting quote potholes. tongue

Fast Eddie made a statement some pages back.

Found Nocturna mentioning it.

A second quote was added to Primal Scene yesterday. I think it's better, but the first quote is the former Trope Namer.

Primal Scene: I like the second more, as the first seems fairly impertinent.

Primal Scene: The second quote is more obviously applicable, although it's a bit on the long side.

Definitely the second on Primal Scene. It's a bit on the long side but not too much so.

A handful of tropes that have two page quotes. With my comments:

  • Big, Stupid Doodoo-Head: The first line of the first quote is the best. The reply is not the trope.
  • Desk Jockey: The first one is better because it needs no explanation.
  • Epigraph: I fail to see the relevance of the first. The second is a quote about a quote about the trope. The actual quote that is referred to would be much preferable. Apparently it is from this book, but there's no way to check the actual words without the book.
  • Mother Russia Makes You Strong: I feel the second one is better. Only it is attributed to a work that quotes from "a contemporary source", instead of the "contemporary source" itself, which would probably be preferable.
  • Sword and Gun: No preference. Neither strikes me as particularly good.

Also, the quote on Wizarding School is much too long, and yet fails to mention that Hogwarts is a wizarding school, as opposed to a plain old school. The quote tab offers no alternative, as the quotes there are even longer.

Let's just say and leave it at that.

Big, Stupid Doodoo-Head: Agree on the first quote, with or without the second line.

Desk Jockey: First is clearer.

Epigraph: Go with the second in lieu of a better option, though I would agree that if anyone can get the referenced quote, that would probably be better.

Mother Russia Makes You Strong: Either one seems fine to me, and whichever isn't used should go to the quotes page. Though I think I'm slightly partial to the second.

Sword and Gun: While I agree that neither are great, I think the first is better as it clearly conveys that both weapons are being wielded at the same time, whereas the second could just as well be one character asking another what the weapons for a duel will be.

Wizarding School: I think the first paragraph (or even just the first two sentences of the first paragraph) of the The Last Continent quote on the quotes page would work well. It's not too long, and conveys quite clearly that the school is magical. The full thing can be left on the quotes page.

The quote on Mundane Object Amazement is all blue with a pothole, but I'm not so sure it works without it.

Should it be unpotholed and left, or switched with something on the quotes page?

^ I don't think it works without the pothole. I'm not sure it works with the pothole.

Othello has three quotes. I'm thinking the first one might be the best.

Mundane Object Amazement: I don't think the quote works alone, even withthe pothole. The comic might make a good page image, though. For the page quote, how about one from the examples — from Third Rock From The Sun:

Dick: "When beetles fight these battles in a bottle with their paddles / And the bottle's on a poodle and the poodle's eating noodles / They call this a muddle puddle tweedle poodle beetle noodle bottle paddle battle!" (beat) This man is a genius!

Mundane Object Amazement: Don't like either the current quote (seems irrelevant) or the proposed one (doesn't seem at all mundane).

Othello: First quote. It very nicely encapsulates one of the major themes of the play.

[up] I dunno, maybe some narration of Sarah's from early on in the film.

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful young girl whose stepmother always made her stay home with the baby. And the baby was a spoiled child, and wanted everything to himself, and the young girl was practically a slave. But what no one knew is that the king of the goblins had fallen in love with the the girl, and he had given her certain powers. So one night, when the baby had be particularly cruel to her, she called on the goblins for help!

"Say your right words," the goblins said, "and we'll take the baby to the castle, and you will be free!" But the girl knew, that the Goblin King would keep the baby in his castle for ever and ever and ever, and turn it into a goblin! And so the girl suffered in silence. Until one day, when she was tired from a day of housework, and she was hurt by the harsh words of her stepmother, and she could no longer stand it...

So two things.

One: Ace Attorney used to have a page quote. It was removed without comment back in September, and I have no idea why. Can we put it back? For the record, it was

Ema Skye: Why can't we have a normal, straightforward killing once in a while in this country!?
Apollo Justice: I'll pretend I didn't hear that.

I thought that maybe it was moved to subpage Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, but nope. Just nixed outright. I haven't checked to see if it had anything to do with this thread, though; if it did, I won't contest it.

Two: I raised this in the Image Pickin' Discussion thread for the article, but it'd fit better here: the quote on Dream Weaver isn't relevant at all. The "dream" the song is about is not a literal dream (what the trope is about), but instead a handsome man (not what the trope is about). Meanwhile, on Quotes.Dream Weaver, a quote from the song "Dream Weaver" (which is about dreams as far as I know) is present, and would fit much better. Admittedly, having a quote that uses the trope name to the letter like so (and isn't an explicit Trope Namer) isn't great, but eh, better than what's on there presently.

On VisualNovel.Ace Attorney, it was Kayube who removed the quote.

[up] Turns out the quote wound up on Franchise.Ace Attorney. That'd explain it. Of course, now I'm confused as to why we need both a Franchise/ page and a VisualNovel/ page...

Of course, it also shares a page image between the two... gonna have to raise an IPD thread.

Yeah, but then you have the individual game pages to break it up further. Seems kind of redundant?

Well, that's not really the focus of this thread, anyway.

The Labyrinth suggestion is really long. How about:

From here.
