Dinosaur Jr. and Del tha Funkee Homosapien - "Missing Link"
Isaac Hayes - "Theme From 'Shaft'" (Yup. One of the greatest and best-known Funk songs out there- that wah-ah guitar alone is legendary. The long, drawn-out intro just serves to build the tension very well, with the subtle hi-hat work, bass stabs and slowly building orchestration all combing very well. And then, at about 2:30, the song kick into high gear when the beat and, of course- of course- Hayes excellent, memetically quotable monologue topping everything off. It all end on the alternately subdued and punchy outro. If you've never listened to this, do yourself a favor and go do it...

You can not go to Utah again after you have eaten Utah and have not eaten.@ Mr Matt: Classic. Also, there are far worse things I could be blamed for, so I'll take credit for this gladly.
Hootie & the Blowfish - "Hold My Hand" (One of the big hits. For whatever reason, this band's name has become a punchline, which I never got- they're not groundbreaking or anything, but they don't belong in the same category as Nickelback or, god forbid, Limp Bizkit. I don't get the hate.
Anyways, this one's got a lot to recommend it, musically- Rucker really sells his vocals, and the subtle organ under the alternately droning and stinging guitar riffs work very well indeed... The rhythm section do a good job keeping things punchy, too, and some of the guitar solos in the last half of the song work very nicely. Solid stuff, and catchy- not deserving of hate, period. )

"They say I'm old fashioned, and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast."The Verve - "Come On" (Just finishing Urban Hymns now. This one's a great Space Rock / Psychedelic Rock number, with perhaps the heaviest riff on the album, along with a great, shifting beat, a throbbing bassline and some wonderful wah-wah guitar leads. Ashcroft's vocals are both anthemic and suitably tripped-out, and the odd quieter parts do a great job breaking up the hypnotically heaviness... And then, of course, there's the extended coda, where he starts ranting and the guitar really freaks out in true Hendrix-gone-Sonic Youth fashion while the whole things gradually drifts into the ether. A great conclusion to an excellent album. )

Probly the best album they ever did, though The Real Thing is very nearly its equal... This one's got one of Patton's most varied vocals performances- guttural growling, soulful falsettos and his more mid-range voice are all present and accounted for here, and he's seamless as ever... The music's got a nice, funky pulse- the clattering, tribal-sounding drums are excellent, as is the subtly funky, danceable bassline- over which a variety of heavy guitar riffs and textures and spooky keyboards are placed, to great effect... There's also that nice breakdown in the middle, with the odd vocal samples and choppy beat, which feels very tribal and works damn well. The lyrics are kinda twisted, as per the norm, but I mean that in a nice way. Overall, excellent Funk Metal / Alternative Metal. )

This one sounds like a mix between a funky theme song to a non-existent Blaxploitation movie and a Laibach-style Martial-Industrial Nazi march. In other words, it's awesome. The switch between the synth-string enhanced Funk sections, with their relentlessly popping basslines, wah-wah guitars and twitchy beats and the grinding, Metallic march sections, with their crowd samples and downcast, heavy riffs is somehow both jarring and completely seamless, which really sums up a lot about these guys. Also, the "with regards to my usage of the drug..." monologue near the end is damned funny. Classic, genre-bending FNM.... )

It's supposed to be an 80s pop parody but it's honestly less over the top than real 80s pop. Needs much, much more melodrama.

Faith No More - "Falling To Pieces" (Listening to The Real Thing, which is tied with Angel Dust for the title of "favorite FNM album". Classic Funk Metal here, with a great, popping bassline, a beat that's both pummeling and funky and a great, epic guitar riff to top it off... and the ethereal synth strings and piano bits are great too. And, of course, Patton's vocals are excellent and varied, as always- I love how he effortlessly goes from high, soulful crooning to harsh, guttural semi-rapping. Wonderful- play it loud! )
