The Other Darrin / Digimon

• When Toei USA went on to dub the undubbed (at the time) movies of Digimon years after the series' run, they couldn't get hold of all the voice actors, so replacements happened:
  • In the second Adventure 02 movie, Jason Spisak replaced Joshua Seth as Tai, Bridget Hoffman replaced Laura Summer as Patamon (which coincided with another Patamon voiced by Hoffman in the Disney-dubbed Frontier) and Jeff Nimoy (Tentomon's voice actor) replaced Kirk Thornton and Neil Kaplan as (respectively) Gabumon and Hawkmon, though Seth, Summer, and Thornton would return in later installments.
  • In the Tamers movies, Philece Sampler replaced both Bridget Hoffman as Jeri and Tifanie Christun as Riley, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn replaced Michelle Ruff as Lopmon, Mona Marshall replaced Wendee Lee as MarineAngemon and Yuri Lowenthal replaced Brian Donovan as Kai (Takato's cousin).
  • In the Frontier movie, Dave Wittenberg replaced Michael Reisz as Takuya; in Frontier itself, Wittenberg also took over as Takuya as a sub whenever he became EmperorGreymon or not because Reisz refused to go through with the amount of yelling involved at that point. Ironically, there was actually a comparatively small amount of shouting involved during EmperorGreymon's scenes.
• In the Adventure series proper, Koromon had three different actors (first MJ Lallo, then Philece Sampler, and finally Brianne Siddall), Tokomon would also have three actresses (Laura Summer, Mona Marshall, and Philece Sampler), Steve Blum replaced Jeff Nimoy as the young Gennai for the last episode of 02, Doug Erholtz (quite understandably) replaced Wendee Lee as TK in 02, and Jeff Nimoy replaced Joshua Seth as Tentomon from the second episode onward (though Seth still voiced Tentomon's in-training form Motimon and Fresh form Pabumon), only to be replaced by Robert Martin Klein near the end of 02, while Anna Garduno, who played Palmon, also left the show around that time, with Philece Sampler and Dorothy Elias-Fahn taking over at various times, though Nimoy and Garduno would return in their roles in later installments. In tri. Koromon and Tokomon wouldn't be voiced by any of their previous actors, but by Doug Erholtz and Kirk Thornton, respectively.
• In the original Japanese of the Adventure anime, Toshiyuki Morikawa replaced Ryūzaburō Ōtomo as Vamdemon's new Ultimate form, BelialVamdemon. Morikawa was also the voice of the evil Digimon's host, Yukio Oikawa as well as one of his co-dragons Mummymon. Conversely in the English versions, while Richard Epcar mainly voiced Myotismon's various forms throughout the dubs of the first two seasons, his first speaking appearance at the end of episode 23 of Season One was provided by Dan Woren, who'd go on to voice Mimi's father Keisuke.
• The two Digimon Rumble Arena games, the only voiced game appearances of anime characters, saw several substitutions. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn replaced both Brian Beacock and Edie Mirman as Takato and Gatomon, respectively; the former (a man voicing a boy replaced by a woman voicing a boy) was particularly jarring. In the second, Robert Martin Klein did Veemon instead of Derek Stephen Prince, Melodee Spevack did Angewomon instead of Edie Mirman, and Tom Fahn and Dan Lorge did Takuya's evolutions instead of Reisz or Wittenberg.
• In the English dub of Tri, which reunites the original characters, the following recasts happen:
  • Matt Ishida: Michael Reisz —> Vic Mignogna
  • Kari Kamiya: Lara Jill Miller —> Tara Sands
  • Joe Kido: Michael Lindsay —> Robbie Daymond
  • TK Takeshi: Doug Erholtz —> Johnny Yong Bosch (despite the fact that Erholtz voices another character in the series)
  • Greymon: Michael Lindsay —> Kyle Hebert (Hebert also replaces Joseph Pilato as MetalGreymon and Lex Lang as WarGreymon)
  • Biyomon: Tifanie Christun —> Cherami Leigh
  • Gatomon: Edie Mirman —> Kate Higgins
  • Though Birdramon and Angemon were voiced by their original actors Melodee Spevack and Dave Mallow at the beginning of the series, they were replaced by Mona Marshall and Jamieson Price, respectively, partway through.
• The English dub of Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna once again recasts Matt from Vic to Nicolas Roye due to Vic's sexual harassment scandals the year before.
  • The dub also saw Philece Sampler being replaced as Mimi and Cody by Kate Higgins and Bryce Papenbrook, respectively. In addition, Griffin Burns replaced Brian Donovan as Davis, Jeannie Tirado replaced Tifanie Christun as Yolei, Christopher Swindle replaced Neil Kaplan as Hawkmon, and Robbie Daymond replaced the late Robert Axelrod as Armadillomon. Daymond also replaced Dave Mallow as Armadillomon's in-training form Upamon, while Paul St. Peter replaced Wendee Lee as Wormmon’s in-training form Minomon.
• A couple in the English dub of Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning:
  • Wormmon is voiced in English by Christopher Swindle instead of Paul St. Peter, who shared that he was invited back but declined the offer as the dub was recorded as a non-union job.
  • While Gatomon is reprised by Kate Higgins, her Angewomon form, instead of being voiced by Higgins as well like in Digimon Adventure tri. and Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, is voiced by Erin Yvette who voiced the Digimon Adventure: (2020) version of Gatomon.
• Similarly, in the Latin-American Spanish dubs five Digidestined changed their VAs from the first season to the second: Taichi (Gerry Meza -> Enzo Fortuny), Yamato (Uraz Huerta -> José Gilberto Vilchis), Koushirou (Monica Estrada -> Alfredo Leal), Takeru (Lupita Leal -> Irwin Daayán), and Hikari (Cristina Hernández -> Tamara Guzmán - as well as Tailmon/Gatomon).
• The entire voice cast of the Finnish Adventure dub changed around the middle of the season when negative feedback they got pretty much forced the original dubbing company, Agapio Racing Team, to give up the series. The dubbing was then taken over by the much more competent Tuotantotalo Werne.
  • Within the Werne dub, Aksu Palmén replaced Santeri Kaleva as Takeru in Adventure 02 (justified like with the Japanese and English versions). Kaleva continued voicing Koushirou, however.
• This occurred in the original Japanese version as well: as Hiroko Konishi had retired from voice acting in 2000, Toei instead got Taisuke Yamamoto to play Takeru for Digimon Adventure 02 (which also went along with his age-up), leading to the dub to follow suit with the above-mentioned Doug Erholtz playing T.K. When the PSP video game adaptation for Digimon Adventure was made, since Takeru once again needed a young-sounding voice, up-and-coming voice actress Megumi Han took over Takeru's role.
• The Hungarian dub of Digimon: The Movie ignored all the series dubbers except Izzy's (Levente Molnar) and Gomamon's (Csaba Krisztián Csík).
• The same happened with the Norwegian dub, where they have a way different cast. Granted the movie was released in Norway before Adventure 2 aired, however it was released after Adventure 1 had aired.
• There is an interesting case in the German cast of Digimon Data Squad. Gerald Schaale who plays Agumon and his digivolutions in Digimon Adventure and Adventure 02, "reprises" his role as Agumon. But Biyomon's voice actress Daniela Reidies from Adventure, Adventure 02 and Frontier plays Lalamon instead, and the Savers Biyomon is played by another voice actress.
  • Magnamon's German voice actor is not Michael Bauer like in Adventure 02 because Bauer plays LordKnightmon/Crusadermon like in Frontiers.
• By far the franchise's most noted example is Digimon Adventure tri., wherein the entire cast for the Chosen Children is changed; two notable examples are Yoshimasa Hosoya and Suzuko Mimori, replacing Yuuto Kazama and Yuko Mizutani respectively as the voices of Yamato and Sora. Note that all of the original partner Digimon retain their original voices.
• Digimon Adventure: (2020): once again the entire cast for the children gets replaced, save for Megumi Han as Takeru/T.K (who was already a Darrin herself), even though the children are the same age they were in the original 1999 anime. Not even the partner Digimon is safe this time, as Tailmon/Gatomon, who was previously voiced by Yuka Tokumitsu, is now voiced by Mie Sonozaki. It couldn't be helped in some cases though, as Mizutani and Taichi's original actress, Toshiko Fujita, had both passed away from breast cancer in 2016 and 2018 respectively.
  • The English dub also recast all the characters, though likewise there were cases were it was unavoidable, as Joe's original actor Michael Lindsay and Mimi's original actor Philece Sampler had passed away in 2019 and 2021 respectively.
• Italian dub:
  • The characters from 02 appeared first in Digimon: The Movie, and when 02 was dubbed the voices for the new characters were all different from the movie ones, except Halsemon. Tentomon's voice actor was also replaced.
  • In the final episodes of Xros Wars, when all the old characters come back most of them kept their old voice actors: only exceptions are Ken (now voiced by JP's voice actor), Gomamon and Tentomon (again). Takuya's VA was replaced too, but only because they didn't want him and Davis with the same voice since they had the same voice actress.
