Go To

One day, Izuku disappears. All Might is the last person to see him. The police try their best but could not find him. Five months later, Izuku reappears in Okinawa, different from before, with no memory of what happened while he was gone.

Haigha is a My Hero Academia Point of Divergence fic by DeusVerve. The premise of Haigha is that Izuku was kidnapped by villains who experimented on him and, among other things, gave him rabbit features.

Unlike most examples of such stories, it begins with Izuku at UA for the entrance exams.

Contains examples of:

  • The Ace: What Izuku emerges as following his internship with Mirko. At the start of the year, he demonstrated a lot of potential but was weighed down by his multitude of insecurities, believing the praise his classmates heaped upon him was just them being polite. Mirko's No-Negativity Internship though, provides him the confidence to truly make use of his abilities. By her assessment, even after a day of training he is as tough a fighter as one of the Top 500 Heroes (out of thousands) and goes on to unlock more of his Quirks. Moreover, he steps up as a leader and analyst for his classmates and is very good at finding ways for others to excel. Also, he has an amazing chocolate chip cookie recipe.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Miruko is introduced multiple Arcs earlier and becomes Izuku's mentor during the Internship Arc.
    • The student dorms are created after the internships, instead of summer.
  • Adaptational Modesty: After Hagakure points out that her "hero costume" consists of just boots and gloves, her classmates are rightfully concerned that she's been walking around in her birthday suit and that she needs a better costume. Power Loader, the teacher in charge of support equipment, is equally shocked by this reveal, as well as outright furious, and promises to give her a better costume. Their first attempt is perfectly invisible but then gets lost. The second attempt actually covered her but was only translucent, and thus she could still be seen to a degree. After her internship though, she learnt how to turn her clothes invisible, and thus could wear a full costume to whatever her desire was.
  • Adaptational Name Change:
    • Ochako calls Izuku "Usagi" instead of "Deku". Especially as she learns what the intent behind "Deku" really was.
    • Ojiro chooses "Hou Quan" instead of "Tail Man" as his Hero Name.
    • Mina picks "Acid Queen" instead of "Pinky" as her Hero Name.
    • Hagakure chooses "Spectra" instead of "Invisible Girl" as her Hero Name, due to Izuku pointing out in chapter 4 that she would be blind if she was actually invisible.
    • Aoyama picks "Nova" after "I Cannot Stop Twinkling" is criticized by Shinsou.
    • Izuku eventually picks "Guardian" as his Hero Name.
  • Adaptation Personality Change:
    • Between Miruko and Midnight's mentorships, Izuku becomes so much more confident and flirty by the time classes resume after internship.
    • Mei does not want to be the head of her own support company, but a hero who fights entirely with support gear like Power Loader.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Bakugo aside, Class 1-A develops a more positive relationship with the other students who came to see the class that survived a mass villain attack because Izuku manages to defuse tensions after Bakugo left.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change: Instead of One for All, Izuku has rabbit powers and several other Quirks the League of Villains forced on him.
  • Adapted Out: Mineta is expelled by Aizawa after the Quirk Apprehension Tests. He was willing to give Mineta a chance to improve himself even though he came last, but revealing himself to be a major pervert got Aizawa to change his mind as his perversions would make him a liability on the field and he does not want to deal with the Yaoyorozu lawyers in case Mineta crosses a line.
  • Affectionate Nickname: During the Internship Arc, Miruko refers to Izuku as "kit" (a baby rabbit).
  • Ambiguous Gender Identity: Played with. Izuku starts experimenting with differently gendered forms in Chapter 21 to figure out their gender identity. They decide they consider themselves male but have no problem taking a female form. He theorizes that part of Polymorph is preventing body dysphoria. Also, wearing a skirt is easier than stuffing his furry legs into pants.
  • Ambiguously Related: Played with. The readers know Izuku and Miruko are unrelated, but the in-universe speculation of the press, and Miruko messing with the press in retaliation for them annoying her with questions about a potential relation to Izuku, makes the exact nature of how the two know each other completely unclear to people in-universe. This confusion continues despite the conflicting and even increasingly ridiculous answers provided to reporters (including Miruko breaking down laughing at one of them), as well as the speculation.
  • Animal-Themed Superbeing: Izuku is now a rabbit-person and uses his rabbit features in his hero training.
  • Armour-Piercing Question: When All Might says Heroes will always be there to defeat the Villains, Shigaraki responds by asking where he was when Izuku was kidnapped before the story started. All Might has no answer.
  • Armour Piercing Response:
    • After their first exercise goes horribly sideways, Katsuki attempts to justify his behavior to All Might by ranting about how Deku must have gotten his Quirk from a villain. All Might shuts him down hard:
All Might: Did you know that I was one of the Heroes working on his disappearance case? (Katsuki freezes, mouth hanging open) I am well aware that Midoriya is Quirkless. And I find your actions today distasteful. Go see Recovery Girl and then get changed. We will be discussing this in detail later.
    • When Todoroki talks to Izuku about his past, he demands to know how Izuku could so easily use the Quirks the League of Villains forced on him compared to Todoroki who rejects the fire half of his Quirk. Izuku responds that it's because the Quirks are his now. Todoroki could not muster a response to that.
    • When Endeavor haughtily tells Izuku not to 'disgrace' his son during their fight, Izuku replies "There is nothing I could do out there that would disgrace him as much as you have."
    • When Monoma claims Izuku had to have lied about nearly losing his arm, because there weren't healing Quirks powerful enough to repair someone's arm like that. Izuku interrupts his train of thought with:
Izuku: He’s right. I lied. I lied… about keeping the arm.
      • Then, once Izuku finishes detailing what happened at the USJ and how the League of Villains gave him multiple Quirks, including Hyper Regeneration, Monoma says, "I didn't know". To which Izuku responds...
Izuku: Why should you have had to? Isn’t knowing that people tried to kill us enough?
    • Following meeting a still infirmary-bound Toga and told about the murders she committed Nedzu pauses and looks at Katsuki asking if she could be considered a good person. Katsuki incredulously responds that she killed people.
Nedzu: But it would have been fine if they dodged, yes?
  • An Arm and a Leg: Izuku loses his arm during the USJ incident after getting hit with Shigaraki's Destruction Quirk, forcing All Might to tear it off to keep it from killing him. Thankfully, Izuku's previously unknown regeneration kicks in, regrowing the arm completely.
  • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness: Bakugou's impulsive decision to attack Shinsou after their match is over, on live television, results in his expulsion from the Hero Course. He would have been expelled from UA outright, but Nedzu wants to turn a potential villain around, so he was merely transferred to the General Course.
  • Aura Vision: Izuku has a Quirk that lets him see Quirk Energy.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Izuku manages to ask leading question that improves the utility of Togeike's Quirk within minutes of her explaining what she can do.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Shigaraki loses absolute control during the USJ Attack the moment he sees Izuku, whom he identifies as being responsible for doing something unspecified to his master.
    • Despite how meek and passive he is at this point, Izuku snaps at Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu when the Class 1-B student makes his canon complaint that 1-A was "lucky" to get to fight villains. Izuku yells back how fortunate he was that he got to keep his arm after the attack, which takes the wind out of the sails of the other students. If anything Izuku is understating things, as the only reason he lived was because All Might amputated his arm, unaware that Izuku could grow a new one.
    • When Monoma (offscreen) accuses Izuku of lying about nearly losing his arm, Ojiro (who saw Izuku's arm disintegrating) is so angry that he hits Monoma, giving him a nasty bruise on his face.
  • Blatant Lies: Miruko tells Izuku to lie to the reporters about how they are related. He comes up with him being her father. Miruko rolls with it, saying Time Travel is involved, but eventually cracks during her "explanation" and dissolves into laughter.
  • Blinded by Rage: Bakugou was so enraged over his loss to Shinsou in the Sports Festival that he attempts to attack him after the match is over, on live national television, without thinking about the potential consequences.
  • Boxing Lessons for Superman: For the hero class, all the members are very physically fit despite their powers. Therefore for the Entrance Exams, even those whose Quirks were completely unsuited for fighting robots, like Koji or Hagakure, were still strong and skilled enough to destroy enough robots with just their bodies. This is in contrast to Shinso who is entirely reliant upon his quirk, and upon joining 1-A is put through a brutal regime to improve himself. He also despairs at realizing he declared war upon an entire class of people able to snap him like a twig without even needing their superpowers.
  • Brick Joke: In Chapter 14, Shoto ruefully realizes that he could have taken a page from Miruko's and Izuku's book and spread ridiculous nonsense about Endeavor to the public to mess with the man's reputation, specifically mentioning that he could probably convince the press that Endeavor keeps that fire beard up 24/7, even when he’s asleep. In Chapter 20, Todoroki "corrects" a classmate about Endeavour's Quirk by insisting Endeavor is actually on fire at all times and that his bedsheets are fireproof.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • Mirio loses his admiration for Sir Nighteye after they get into an argument with the blond refusing to take One For All which led to his mentor flat out stating that he only took him under his wing so he can better control him as All Might's successor.
    • Momo, along with all of her girl friends, lose respect for Uwabami after explaining how the Gorgon Hero wasted her internship with photoshoots rather then giving her useful advice or experiences on what to expect in becoming a woman hero.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer:
    • Or Bunny Ears Hero Student, as a result of Izuku's internship leaving him filled with confidence and driving his classmates to distraction with his flirtatious behaviour, and Aizawa to despair.
    • Mei is considered an absolute genius by Power Loader, yet driving him to drink alcohol in meetings before the semester even starts.
  • But Now I Must Go: After his fight with Sir Nighteye over the true intentions behind his mentorship, Mirio decides to leave his office and find somewhere else to work at.
  • Cannot Tell Fiction from Reality: Izuku chastises Bakugou in Chapter 7 of this and how he sees himself as an upcoming shonen protagonist while everyone around him are just pointless background characters.
  • Cliffhanger:
    • Chapter 11 ends with Aoyama admitting he knows All for One.
    • Chapter 16 ends with Miruko saying she has to head to Deika City to help with a disaster there.
  • Collateral Damage: Discussed. During the Battle Trial Arc, both Kaminari and Todoroki are criticized for using their electric and ice powers so freely that they could end up doing more harm than good in a real-life scenario. Particularly with electrifying or freezing the bomb which could set it off to detonate.
  • Combo Platter Powers: As it turns out, the League of Villains forced nine Quirks on Izuku. The ones he's discovered so far are:
    • His rabbit-traits (which are actually part of a shape-shifting Quirk called Polymorph).
    • He can tell where a specific person or object is in relation to him (Tracking).
    • He can see Quirk Energy (Scanning).
    • He can recover from injuries, including major injuries, quickly (Hyper Regeneration).
    • He can mentally slow down time for himself so he could process information faster (Focus).
    • He can merge into his shadow to move around that way (Meld into Shadows).
    • He can breath out a gas that knocks people unconscious (Sedation).
  • Commonality Connection:
    • Miruko confides in Izuku that she too used to be discriminated against by her peers and received no support for her hero dreams.
    • Izuku is deeply distressed upon realizing that Himiko is showing signs of having had a past just as miserable as his own.
  • Cool Car: All Might summons the AllMobile to pick up Izuku and an unconscious Himiko.
  • Cool Teacher:
    • All Might serves as one, with his students loving the living icon and his hammy behaviour. Helped by the fact that, unlike canon, when Bakugo goes too far in the Battle Trials, he intervenes like a responsible adult.
    • Despite what one might assume from Miruko's abrasive manner, and having never been a mentor before, she settles into this role quite well with Izuku. Her training is progressive and difficult without being abusive, she doesn’t want him anywhere near Stain despite the fact that she would be there too, doesn’t judge Izuku for his Quirkless past, and her greatest emphasis is on increasing his self-confidence in a healthy manner. She’s also fiercely protective of Izuku when she knows he’s in danger from Stain, and extra brutal in fighting the Hero Killer for hurting her kit. She also carefully calms Izuku down despite admitting she’s terrible at offering comfort.
      • Afterwards, Izuku admits to Shinso he sees her as a big sister.
    • Aizawa proves to be this in how supportive he is for his students. In addition to his canon actions, he carefully and gently helps guide a traumatized Izuku through discovering his new Quirks. When Aoyama reveals that he received his quirk from AFO, he patiently and compassionately helps his student despite how internally horrified he feels on the kid's behalf, and desperate for answers. At the end, a crying Aoyama expects to be expelled, only to be told he did nothing wrong (although Aizawa is planning a future lesson on heroes properly sharing critical information), and tells him to immediately report to Nedzu so the principal can arrange protection for the whole family. During the Interclass Training Arc he provides constructive or harsh advice to his students as needed so they can grow and survive in this field.
    • Midnight becomes this when mentoring Izuku with Sedation, demonstrating how while the R-Ranked Hero is a persona she enjoys, she also knows how far to push her students with it. With Izuku though, when he proves capable of bantering back, she reciprocates while praising his growing confidence.
  • Corpsing: In-Universe. The "Izuku being Miruko's father" lie only lasts as long as it takes for the latter to break down laughing. It still gets put on the news though, and by a later POV by Togeike shows that even weeks later the rumours of him being Miruko's time-displaced father are still going strong.
  • Dead Man's Switch: One of the precautions UA faculty takes in fear of Izuku having dormant brainwashing is giving staff devices that monitor their vitals and constantly give Nedzu updates so if they stop giving signals, or just medical alerts, he knows something happened. This proves invaluable at the USJ and ensures earlier reinforcements when all three signals are simultaneously cut off. Afterwards, they decide to keep them despite it being clear that Izuku is not an unwilling mole because due to his mystery quirks, it’s possible for them to unintentionally activate and go on a rampage beyond his control. At this rate, they may become the new standard gear for the teachers.
  • Didn't See That Coming: All of Sir Nighteye's lofty plans for Mirio are thrown off by one very simple little detail: Nighteye never bothered to tell Mirio about his intentions, only spilling the beans after Mirio had already turned down All Might's offer.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Shinsou eventually realises how stupid it was for a twig like him to declare war on 1-A when most of them could beat him without using their Quirks, and he's glad they're all quite forgiving of him besides roasting him on his noodle arms.
    • Izuku chews out Iida for this during the Stain Arc. He points out that Stain is a professional serial killer who's bested multiple Pro Heroes who have years of field experience while Iida himself is still a newbie and his anger alone wouldn't be enough to stop him.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Mirio after finding out that Izuku's quirk came in late, and has more than one, becomes concerned he is associated with AFO. After talking to All Might though, he is relieved the kid is no threat, and the staff knows what is going on with Izuku, even if they can't tell Mirio the specifics.
  • Epic Fail: Power Loader manages to make a hero suit for Hagakure. Unfortunately, it's invisible. He promptly loses it, and it remains lost to this day.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Played for Drama. While picking out their hero names and titles, Izuku realizes that there was never a hero who actually came to save him. Not when he was abducted by the League and certainly not when he was bullied for being quirkless.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Midnight is known to be flirty and make perverted comments, but she claims that she'd never approach a student with seductive intentions. She even admits that she sees the kids as literal children.
  • Evil Poacher: In Chapter 18, Izuku deduces that the League of Villains gave him specific Quirks for the purpose of turning him into a hunter to capture people of interest without being caught.
  • Famed In-Story: Izuku becomes more famous as the story goes on. It starts with the press noticing his rabbit traits and speculating on a connection to Miruko. And then he wins the Sports Festival, becoming even more famous for defeating the son of the number two Hero. And then, he helps beat Stain and unlike canon, he’s properly credited for it. He has to work hard to avoid the press afterwards.
  • Fantastic Fighting Style: Those with heavy mutations like Miruko develop their own martial arts since non-Quirk martial arts are optimised for people without mutations and simply do not work as well for them. Miruko teaches Izuku her style during their internship.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • There were a lot of hints that Izuku has multiple Quirks before the proper reveal. Examples include his uncanny ability to locate what he's searching for, which foreshadows Tracking, and a baffling lack of injuries after getting hit by something that should have caused a lot of it, which foreshadows Hyper Regeneration. Other hints later revealed that his rabbit form is actually the result of a shape-shifting Quirk.
    • Mei asks Power Loader early on how he balances Heroics and Support. She also works on a project codenamed Victoria before the Sports Festival. It turns out she was interested in being a dual Hero-Support student and achieves that after the Sports Festival, with her chosen Hero-Name being Victoria after the Roman Goddess.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: While Nedzu understands from his meeting with Bakugou that he was encouraged to embrace toxic mentalities about quirk usage and Social Darwinism from Aldera Middle, he makes it clear that the boy will still face strict consequences for trying to assault Izuku and Shinsou.
  • The Gadfly:
    • Annoyed by the press hounding her on a possible relation to Izuku, Miruko starts amusing herself by giving wrong and contradictory answers to them by claiming he’s her son, her nephew, and her younger brother, at different points in time.
      • She explicitly advises Izuku to do the same when he interns with her, saying that the more ridiculous he can get, the better. This results in the claim about him being her time-traveling father.
    • Discussed. Inspired by Miruko's and Izuku's example, Shouto dreams of the day he goes pro and gets asked for interviews where he can make up all sorts of ridiculous things about his father as a form of revenge against him.
  • Gone Horribly Right:
    • The League of Villains wanted to make Izuku into a nearly unstoppable agent for them, specifically to hunt down valuable Quirks, and that’s what they got, except now as their enemy.
    • A comedic example, as Eraserhead wanted to help Izuku become more confident, and while he has that, he also has basically Midnight 2.0 as he snaps off flirtatious comments and innuendos at the drop of a hat.
  • Green Thumb: Downplayed with Togeike Chikuchi. Her Quirk Foliage allows her to manipulate plant life along with speeding up the growth process of a plant. However, she can only grow a single tree in a few minutes and she needs to have a seed to start with.
  • The Gunslinger: During the Sports Festival, Mei uses modified guns that can shoot nets and freezing bullets to neutralize her opponents. Her later powersuit has two robot arms that hold two handguns.
  • Healing Factor: Izuku is surprisingly good at recovering from injuries. It's because he has the Hyper Regeneration Quirk. Aizawa however is concerned Izuku might be too ready to take unnecessary harm just because he can recover from it.
    • As a bonus, it also gives him incredible stamina, as his body repairs muscle tears as fast as they happen. On his Quirk Apprehension Test, he won the stamina run by a long shot and was not even tired.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • It's Kaminari who suggests "Haigha" as a potential Hero Name for Izuku, specifically citing Lewis Carroll and the March Hare by name.
    • For all of Miruko's abrasive and aggressive manner, she quickly proves to be the Cool Teacher to Izuku.
    • Being more than dumb muscle, All Might demonstrates his vast experience when discussing Quirks with his colleagues, veteran Pro Heroes in their own right, making observations that surprise and intrigue them.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: All chapters follow the basic naming pattern of 'The [Blank] and the [Blank]'. Typically, this is more specifically 'The Rabbit and the [Blank]', but the first subject will occasionally refer to another entity, such as 'The Staff and the Students', 'The Class and the Codenames', or 'The Hero and the Monster'.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Katsuki grapples with this in the wake of the USJ. While his perspective reveals that he does, on some level, recognize why Izuku and All Might have called him out on his bullshit, he continues desperately clinging to his usual self-justifications, frantically reassuring himself that he's stronger than 'Deku' and just needs to 'prove' that to everyone.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Katsuki's existing complexes worsened after the Sludge Villain incident proved that he wasn't invincible, causing him to lose his Big Jerk on Campus status at Aldera. Things only intensify when he doesn't get coddled at U.A., with All Might calling him out on ignoring orders and using lethal force during a training exercise. Learning that Izuku has multiple Quirks doesn't do him any favors, either, as he grows even more obsessed with 'proving' that he's better than everyone else.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • While the teams are composed differently, Izuku still has to face Katsuki during their first training exercise with All Might, and Katsuki still attempts to use lethal force via his gauntlets.
    • The USJ Incident still happens in spite of whatever Izuku did to All for One (which cut off the League's only connection to Aoyama's info before Aoyama even got to UA). This is due to Shigaraki sneaking into UA after destroying the UA Barrier. Aizawa even notes they probably would have had Aoyama do it if whatever happened to All For One never happened.
    • Toga still shows up after the Stain arc in spite of the lack of a viral Stain video since Izuku being credited for his defeat results in Toga specifically going after him.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Izuku decides to inform his classmates about his kidnapping by the hands of the League of Villains and how they experimented on him to obtain multiple quirks.
    • Miruko was read in on the truth of what happened with Izuku so that she could properly mentor him.
    • Later he decides to tell 1-B and Chikuchi Togeike it as well given how they are going to be spending so much time training together in the future. Plus cracks in his cover story about what happened at USJ were showing.
    • UA has Toga in their infirmary for quite a while without a single clue as to what her name or identity is. Once they have the former though, they quickly put it all together.
  • It's All About Me:
    • Katsuki tends to make everything about him. He interprets Izuku's kidnapping and the fact he got a Quirk out of it as a personal affront to himself on Izuku's part, no matter how nonsensical that logical leap is.
    • Sir Nighteye has a similar problem, given how upset he becomes when Mirio doesn't play along with his plans and dares to decide how he wants to live his own life.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Bakugou is right to complain about Shinsou's own complaints on the way the UA Hero Entrance Exam is structured. As Bakugou says, there are several Hero students with weak combat Quirks who managed to pass the exam because, unlike Shinsou, they put in the effort to overcome their shortcomings. Shinsou did not do that and is in fact a twig in terms of muscle mass.
  • Karma Houdini: Zigzagged with Iida. He should have faced legal consequences for ditching his mentor in order to fight Stain despite being told otherwise by Endeavor. But Endeavor and Miruko agree not to tell the police, since him losing to Stain and gaining a serious shoulder injury is punishment enough.
  • Keeping the Enemy Close: Nedzu references this concept, arguing that it'll be more reasonable to allow Izuku, a victim of villain experimentation who could potentially be a Manchurian Agent, to be kept within their facilities so the heroes can keep a better eye on him. Later on, Nedzu also decides that Bakugou will be placed in the General Course rather than outright expelled from the Hero School, implying that he could become a greater threat to everyone if he was simply kicked out.
  • Killer Rabbit: Izuku's rabbit traits make him look adorable. He is also the most powerful student among UA's First Years, and Miruko teaches him to fully embrace being a Killer Bunny.
  • Knockout Gas: Izuku can produce gas from his lungs that knock out other people. It is not as strong, or far-reaching, as Midnight's, although the sweet scent helps encourage people to sniff it more.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Izuku was a prisoner of villains for five months, and he doesn’t remember a single thing about it.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Aldera Middle School ignored, enabled, and encouraged the abuse Katsuki and others heaped on Izuku. Katsuki being so used to being allowed to get away with his actions results in him attacking his opponent after the match is over on live television, which results in Nedzu opening investigations into Aldera which leads to the arrest of its teachers.
  • Left for Dead: Izuku is left to drown by the villains that kidnapped him. It failed when he washes up in Okinawa.
  • Manchurian Agent: Discussed. Izuku and the U.A. faculty fear Izuku is a sleeper agent after his kidnapping, but they ultimately conclude he isn't after the USJ Incident since if he was, the League of Villains would have activated him, or at least not tried to kill him so badly.
  • The Mole: Subverted. All for One intended to cash in the debt Aoyama's family owed him by having Aoyama spy on U.A., but whatever Izuku did to All for One caused the League of Villains to lose contact with him and Aoyama eventually comes clean to Aizawa about it after learning about Izuku's own experience at the hand of the League. Instead of the expected punishment, he and his family are put into safe custody, any value he had as a spy is destroyed.
  • My Greatest Failure: All Might deeply regrets his words to Izuku atop that building, and spent months searching for him. The first opportunity he gets, he gives a deep and personal apology. What he did still bites deep though, as Shigaraki was able to taunt him about it.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Miruko mentions her past career as an underground fighter. This was detailed in the Vigilantes spin-off.
    • Izuku has a total of nine Quirks, a reference to how he was the ninth holder of One for All in canon.
    • Chikuchi Togeike gets to do training with the Class 1-A and 1-B classes in their joint training the same way Shinsou Hitoshi did in canon.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Justified. The League of Villains forced nine Quirks on Izuku, with the dormant ones activating just as he needs them.
  • Noodle Incident: After Hatsume casually drops knowing Izuku has multiple Quirks, she then mentions that she accidentally stumbled upon a government secret again.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Little is known about the event, but Izuku managed to destroy All for One so hard that the supervillain nearly died in the process and was left unresponsive in some way.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Tamaki gets a distressing call from Mirio about Sir Nighteye being a prat, his demeanor completely shifts, to the point that he practically snarls from outrage.
  • Paparazzi: As in canon, the League exploited the Media Scrum around U.A. to cover their break-in, just like the reporters exploited the incident to break in and harass the students. A tabloid reporter is also responsible for Miruko learning about Izuku, as she asks about her supposed 'secret son' with a shit-eating grin.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • The primary point that alters the plot is Izuku being kidnapped by villains, specifically the League of Villains, to be experimented on.
    • Izuku was abducted off the rooftop All Might left him on, leaving Bakugou with nobody to save him from the Sludge Villain. While he survived, he caught pneumonia from the attack and was bedridden for six months. This destroyed Bakugou's reputation at Aldera when his classmates saw that he wasn't as invincible as he boasted. Naturally, his existing complexes made that much worse.
    • Because of the monitoring devices Nedzu has his staff wear, he’s instantly alerted when the USJ incident happens after he loses their signals. This allows him to respond to the incident much faster and prevent injuries.
    • Mineta's expulsion leads to several changes down the line:
      • The second round of the Sports Festival still needed 42 students, which means Chikuchi Togeike makes it to the second round and later the third round as part of Shinsou's team. This results in UA faculty giving her strong consideration for transfer into the Hero Course.
      • The first joint training class takes place before summer, and Togeike joins as her unofficial exam to join the Hero Course.
      • Shinsou takes Mineta's place in Class 1-A.
    • Because of their more positive relationship, Shinsou does not brainwash Aoyama or Ojiro into joining him, and Ojiro does not feel the need to drop out for feeling he didn't earn his third-round placement.
    • Bakugou attempting to assault Shinsou after their match, on live television, results in the following:
      • Bakugou is immediately expelled from the Hero Course, transferred to the General Course, and Nedzu places him on probation. The resulting open spot is taken by Hatsume to be a dual Hero-Support student.
      • Nedzu opens investigations into Aldera Middle School for abuse and discrimination.
    • Because the League of Villains have, by all indications, lost All For One, and combined with Izuku telling the class that he was Quirkless before the League forced several Quirks on him, Aoyama eventually works up the courage to come clean on his own Quirkless past and admit his connection to All for One to Aizawa.
    • On a related note, with All For One out of commission, the League is much less effective as they are deprived of his leadership. It’s just Shigaraki and the Doctor making it up as they go along.
    • Izuku ends up interning with Miruko, due to the ongoing rumors about their connection and him winning the Sports Festival, instead of Gran Torino, due to not having the same relationship with All Might.
    • For the Stain Arc, both Endeavor and Miruko join in to fight alongside the 1-A boys (and the Offensive Hero) against Stain with the Flame Hero losing badly while Miruko shows up to stop the Hero Killer and finishing what her pupil started. Also, without All for One, the League have no Nomu to attack Hosu, preventing Stain from being linked to the League of Villains, and costing them in recruits.
    • Also for the Stain Arc, Stain is knocked unconscious in a back-alley fight, and too beaten up to do anything more. So he does not get a dramatic final speech which was broadcasted for people to see and latch onto his ideology.
    • Togeiki Chikuchi is the one who becomes the Ninth Bearer of One for All due to Izuku not being an option and Mirio rejecting the Quirk.
  • Poor Communication Kills:
    • Katsuki's parents were honestly unaware of how their son treated his peers at Aldera, much less that he was constantly bullying and belittling Izuku. Both are shocked beyond belief when the truth comes out, especially when his mother finally catches on to who 'Deku' is.
Mitsuki: Katsuki, you didn't. Not to Inko's son.
    • Played for Drama with Mirio being unaware of Sir Nighteye's ambitions for him, leading to him turning down All Might's offer without realizing how his mentor would react.
  • Power Misidentification:
    • Izuku's rabbit traits were assumed to be simple mutations, but upon taking a closer look, the doctors notes that it’s not actually acting like a normal Mutation-type Quirk. Izuku also doesn't just have the rabbit traits and has several more Quirks in him. Chapter 15 reveals the rabbit traits are actually from a shape-shifting Quirk called Polymorph and Izuku can give himself traits from other animals.
    • Overall, the UA teachers discuss how the Emitter-Transformation-Mutant classification system is too simplistic for how complex Quirks are and a Quirk being classified as one or the other, even if technically correct, causes the user to grossly misjudge the potential of their Quirk due to being given a label with over-simplified definitions.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • Izuku calls Katsuki out after he has the gall to visit him in the wake of the USJ, while he's still recovering, to try and quiz him about what the hell happened with the League:
Izuku: You got what you wanted. You were the only one from Aldera that made it into U.A. You have your perfect origin story. You even took one look at me and decided the only explanation was that I became a Villain to spite you. Newsflash, Katsuki, you aren't some fucking Shonen protagonist. You still call people extras, don't you? Do — do you even think of other people as real? Or are you so far up your own ass you really don't think of other people as anything but background characters?
      (...)
Izuku: I think you should leave. It's supposed to be family and friends in here, right? You've made it clear that we were never friends. Leave, Bakugou.
      Katsuki: I-I never—
Izuku: I don't care. I should've stopped caring the first time you called me Deku.
Katsuki: Yeah? Well why didn't you?
Izuku: Because I thought you were my first, best friend. And I never really understood why you started to hate me. I wanted my friend back. (shakes his head) I told you to leave, Bakugou. I'm expecting visitors.
    • Endeavor gets roasted by Izuku, who coldly points out to him that it's blatantly obvious how his own son despises and wants nothing to do with him, along with dissecting his motives:
Izuku: I don't understand what you intend to prove. Even if he goes on to be the next Number One, do you really think people will say he 'surpassed All Might'? The man's at least a decade past his prime. No one will ever surpass All Might. Because All Might is so much more than 'the Number One Pro Hero'. He chose to become the Symbol of Peace. To make Japan safe with his presence alone.
(he looks up at a quietly fuming Endeavor)
Izuku: No, he'll be compared to you. Do you know what they'll say, Endeavor? That your son is a better Hero than you ever were. Your legacy won't be 'The Man Who Surpassed All Might'. Even if Todoroki pulled that off, that would be his legacy, never yours. No, your legacy will be the Hero who never made it all the way to the top and then lost to his own son. The eternal Number Three.
      Endeavor: You insolent little brat.
Izuku: I don't think you're allowed back here. After all, this is for students and staff only. You wouldn't want to get charged with trespassing now, would you? Or, more accurately, of fixing your son's matches. That would sure get Todoroki some notoriety, huh? The Number Two's son can't even win without daddy dearest threatening the other kids?
      Endeavor: You...
Izuku: Careful, Endeavor, it would be hard to explain why I have burns on me. After all, Todoroki doesn't use his fire.
  • Refusal of the Call: After Toshinori reveals his true self to Mirio along with offering him the chance to be the next holder of One For All, the blonde politely refuses for the following reasons: he already has his own quirk that is difficult to work with so inheriting OFA would be harder for him, and he believes he can be just as big a hero with his permeation Quirk.
  • Required Secondary Powers: Miruko brings up that she noticed that all speedy Mutant-types have the ability to see at slowed-down time perceptions since their speed is useless without it. This in turn leads to Izuku realising that a lot of Mutant Quirks have built-in secondary mutations to make the main Quirk power work properly and efficiently.
  • The Reveal: Chapter 26 reveals that Deika did not suffer a landslide. There was a battle and according to Ragdoll, several of Deika's inhabitants lost their Quirks.
  • Rule 34: From personal experience, Miruko strongly advises Izuku to never look himself up online. Ever.
  • Saying Too Much:
    • Played With when Nedzu encourages Katsuki to really think about his circumstances, causing him to blurt out "Why didn't they care?", questioning why his old teachers at Aldera let him get away with so much. This comes as shocking news to his parents, who leap on the idea that he's done horrible things before; however, this was exactly what Nedzu was looking for, convincing him to transfer Katsuki to Gen Ed rather than simply expelling him outright.
    • Sir Nighteye destroys his relationship with Mirio by telling his mentee that the only reason he took him in was so he could become All Might's successor.
  • Secret-Keeper: The people who know about Izuku's unique situation are UA's faculty, the investigating officers, doctors, and Quirk specialists, his mom, Class 1-A including Hitoshi and Hatsume but excluding Bakugou, Class 1-B, Togeike, and Miruko. Mirio knows more than most, but only enough to reassure him that Izuku is not connected to All For One.
  • Seen It All: As an underground hero, Aizawa has a long history of seeing the worst of humanity. From human trafficking, to child abuse cases, to human experimentation, etc. But it comes as a surprise when Aoyama reveals himself to be indebted to the boogeyman of all villains.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Famous!: Discussed. Miruko, being as popular as she is, tells Iida she could tell people that she personally ordered him to fight Stain and she'll only get a slap on the wrist.
  • Shaming the Mob: When a mob of non 1-A students arrive to heckle the main class for being "lucky" enough to receive media attention, Izuku spits the word right back at them claiming that he almost lost an arm while dealing with villains who tried to kill them. The mob grows silent and even Tetsutetsu, the ringleader who used the word to begin with, feels ashamed for his actions.
  • Shapeshifter Mode Lock: Downplayed. Izuku misunderstanding his rabbit traits, not realizing it’s part of a shapeshifting Quirk, causes him to be stuck as a rabbit boy for about half a year because of a self-inflicted mental block. His battle with Stain pushing him causes the mental block to disappear and he manages to turn back into his original form with Miruko's help.
  • Shapeshifting: Midoriya Izuku can turn parts of his body into parts from different animals. He can give himself a snout from a canine, and turn his hands into claws like a bird's, or even change his gender. An innate feature prevents body dysphoria, which is how Izuku adjusted so well to the very concept of waking up in a hospital with rabbit features and later experimenting with being a girl.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Shadow Walker: The Quirk Meld into Shadows allows the user to merge into their shadow and move around like that.
  • The Slacker: Shinsou notices that even though many General Ed students were vocally bitter about not making it into the Heroics Program, many of them have done nothing to improve their skills or chances of moving up and are disturbingly complacent in staying in General Ed.
  • Slumber Party: Mina holds one in Chapter 21 where her 1-A girl colleagues attend.
  • Stepford Smiler: Izuku quickly deduces Himiko is one during their second meeting due to her complete 180 in behavior, as well as how fake her smile feels. Whereas before she'd been unhinged and desperate, Himiko instead acts shockingly polite and talks in a way that reminds him of Momo. That, combined with her reciting "normal girls don't drink blood" like an enforced doctrine, paints a very cruel picture of her home life.
  • Suspiciously Clean Criminal Record: Nedzu catches Bakugou threatening another student on U.A.'s cameras, which prompts him to check Bakugou's record again and noting how oddly clean it is for someone with obvious violent tendencies to his staff during their meeting.
  • Title Drop: Kaminari name drops Haigha when suggesting a Hero Name for Izuku. Izuku doesn't care much for it.
  • To the Pain: Played with since Nedzu has no intention of doing any of that stuff to Bakugou, but Nedzu tells him precisely what happened to the humans that once experimented on and tortured him to make a point.
  • Transformation Horror: This happens to Himiko when she wakes up from her comatose state and her body begins to horrifically transform parts of itself to resemble Izuku.
  • Uncertain Doom: Izuku did something to All for One that Shigaraki is upset about, but neither Izuku nor readers have any clue on the details.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Izuku goes through this after Stain plunges a sword on Iida's shoulder which triggers a beastly transformation as he attacks the Hero Killer. While not enough to stop the villain, he fared much better than adult Pros had and bought critical time.
  • We Used to Be Friends: In Chapter 7, Izuku decides that he's had enough of Bakugou's narcissistic attitude and declares that he no longer sees him as a friend. He even retires the childhood nickname "Kacchan" and refers to the blond on a Last-Name Basis.
  • Weakened by the Light: If too much light is placed on Izuku, he'd have a harder time using his Shadow Melding quirk.
  • Weirdness Magnet: Poor, poor Izuku. Things just keep happening to him. He gets kidnapped by Villains, gets experimented on, and becomes a bunny boy, then the USJ incident happens, then he gets into a confrontation with Stain, then he gets attacked by Toga. It's bad enough that Aizawa tells his colleagues to guess the name of one of the students involved in the Stain incident, they immediately and correctly guess Izuku.
Izuku pulls out his cell phone, cringes preemptively, and dials Mr. Aizawa's number. His homeroom teacher picks up after the second ring.
Aizawa: Please tell me you haven't gotten involved in another Villain attack.
Izuku: I have not gotten involved in another Villain attack.
    Aizawa: I don't believe you.
Izuku: In my defense, I don't know that she's a Villain.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: In Chapter 18, Aizawa is quick to chastise Izuku for willingly giving some of his blood to his Himiko despite the girl trying to assault him.
