Fanfic / Friendship Contract

Go To

Reading an epic tale of one of the Third Hokage's missions, a 6 year old Naruto sets himself on getting some awesome summons of his own. Unable to find a contract on short notice, and not understanding why a contract is required, he goes through the necessary motions anyways and winds up in Equestria. Can Naruto convince the locals to let him be their summoner? Is the ninja world ready for the likes of Pinky Pie? Just how much will a young Naruto benefit from the Magic of Friendship?

Friendship Contract is a Naruto/My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic crossover fic by Demiristraz, and can be read here on Fimfiction.net.

However, the fic has not updated since July 2012, with no explanations (or anything else) from the author, and has thus likely become a Dead Fic.

Tropes:

  • Boring, but Practical:
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: People keep borrowing Shikamaru's favorite catchphrase. He is not amused.
  • Brick Joke: Early in the story, Kiba comments that he can't wait until he can drink hard liquors. Over a dozen chapters later, he's trying to convince Anko to give him some of her hard apple cider.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Kakashi makes a special note that Naruto is approaching these levels with his tricks compared to the other students. The orange ninja also seems to have picked up some habits from a certain pink pony
  • Chekhov's Gun: The chakra seals that Pinkie Pie had stored up from Naruto.
  • Chekhov's Skill: The process of making a cloud and shaping it.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Cake batter in the cannon: it's tradition.
    • Naruto hides packs of cards all over Konoha inside seals in case of emergencies, similar to Pinkie's habit of leaving balls around Ponyville.
    • The mustache spell and pink, chocolate-raining clouds.
    • Rainbow Dash thinks that exploring the Forest of Death would be just like a Daring Doo book and even goes to get her Daring Doo cosplay outfit to use for it.
    • Mare Do Well makes an appearance, mysteriously while some of the mane six are off doing other things. Of course, then Neji explains what's going on to everyone, including the foreign ninjas.
    • Discord jokingly says 'believe it' when Naruto doesn't trust him.
    • To lure the Sound Five into a false sense of security, Naruto sends in a team of clones disguised as the original team sent to get Sasuke from canon.
  • Cool Airship: The Ixion, a craft built by the Cutie Mark Crusaders and outfitted with several powerful weapons (and which earns two of them their cutie marks). It takes a lot of chakra for Naruto to summon it.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Commented on. Sakura grumbles that she needs to 'learn to use the gates or something' because she's the only character without such a technique.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Lampshaded. Upon Sasuke's comment that the Mangekyo Sharingan makes whoever uses it go blind, Naruto comments that "I've heard that one before about doing other naughty stuff."
  • Dumbass No More: With Twilight Sparkle as his tutor, there was no way Naruto would be able to stay a Book Dumb character.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Kakashi actually shows up pretty early in the story, but isn't even named for several chapters even though he appears several times.
  • Evil Gloating: Apparently, Doto has a MAJOR problem with actually fighting and not talking on and on about his plans and how insignificant everyone else is compared to him. He even managed to keep gloating long enough for Naruto to get bored and switch opponents with Sasuke.
  • Family Honor: Griffon society runs on this, with all griffons being family to one another. Crosses over with Noble Savage, as most of Equestria considers them rough yet honorable creatures.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: Tiny the puppy Cerberus
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • Besides the differences Naruto's upbringing under the Ponies makes (for instance, his contract with them precludes him from getting one with the toads), the Chuunin Exams alone see Karin make a Heel–Face Turn, Sakura defeat Ino instead of drawing with her, Hinata not lose as badly and actually deal a blow to Neji that leaves him barely able to stand, Rock Lee come out of his loss to Gaara without serious injury (thanks to Sweetie Belle talking Gaara down), and the Third Hokage survive his fight against Orochimaru thanks to Luna.
    • With Naruto forcing Sasuke to not withdraw into himself and keeping him from witnessing Itachi's Tsukiyomi and murder of their parents, Sasuke is almost a completely different person. Upon hearing that Itachi came to Konoha dressed in a black cloak with red clouds, he immediately left… to grab Sakura, since the black cloaks with red clouds indicate that Naruto is in danger from Itachi.
  • Foreshadowing: A character in chapter 16 thinks in wonderment at a 'real life Uzumaki' being at the exam. It's Karin, his cousin.
  • Fun with Acronyms: The Modular Earth-pony Chakra Hardened Assault Puppet, or MECHA Puppet. Alternate name of Chakra Hardened Ultra Can Kicker (which Kankuro steadfastly refuses to use).
  • Genius Ditz: Pinkie Pie is quick to take to sealing techniques, becoming quite proficient with them in little time.
  • Had to Be Sharp: The griffins due to living within high mountain peaks.
  • Handicapped Badass: Master Patch, strongest of the Diamond Dogs and Sakura's trainer during her training trip in Equestria is blind and wields very Earthbender-like abilities. Stated by the author to be an homage to Toph.
  • Harping on About Harpies: Sasuke's 2nd level curse seal form resembles a harpy after his training with the griffins.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: The griffon tale on the Nameless One, a griffon who fell to his mad quest of vengeance upon the elder brother who slew their father and fled.
  • Hive Mind: The changelings in this universe, facilitated by a Psychic Link.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Even with all of the other changes that happen, Team 7 still gets stuck guarding Tazuna and escorting him back to the Land of Waves.
    • The matches post-Forest of Death are still the same, though some of the outcomes are tweaked.
    • Also the Kazekage Rescue Arc, despite the changes in tecniques and the added ponies, the result is basically the same as the manga.
  • Kill It with Fire: Twilight's response to one of Jiraiya's adult-only books after she reads it.
  • Killer Rabbit: Or Chihuahua, in this case. Who would've thought one named Master Patch would be the best fighter of the Diamond Dogs?
  • Lampshade Hanging: A lot of it in general, but a shining example is found in the comment on the trope New Powers as the Plot Demands with the development of chakra usage in the ponies. Twilight comments that "It's not like we're just suddenly developing new powers to keep up with the plot of some bad novel", as they've been working towards it ever since the beginning of the story.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: The narration comments that Kakashi came in 'from his off-screen battle' to give the Snow princess the real crystal necklace.
    • Sasuke and Rainbow Dash have a short discussion on how if they stick around each other too much longer, their "fan clubs would join forces. Akatsuki would run in fear."
  • Lotus-Eater Machine: Rarity has a technique that creates effects like this.
  • Mad Scientist: Pinkie Pie is slowly becoming this, what with her experimentation with chakra and seals and her curiously effective inventions.
  • Mama Bear: Strangely, Luna is extremely protective of her 'adoptive foal', Naruto.
  • Master of Illusion: Of the pony ninjas, Rarity is the illusion expert. In over a year of her ambushing Naruto with them, he has never yet managed to realize he was even in a Genjutsu in less than 15 minutes.
  • Ms Exposition: The changeling that was left to guard Naruto.
  • Mythology Gag:
  • Necessarily Evil: Discord points out his purpose as this, ensuring that Utopian societies don't decay and ensuring the status quo doesn't remain constant.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Subverted. Sakura accidentally breaks the gate keeping evil at bay in Equestria, but she's reassured that there are backups.
  • No Indoor Voice: Luna has to be reminded to use her indoor voice the first time she's summoned.
  • The Nondescript: Naruto's use of yin chakra makes the Shining Armor technique turn him into this, preventing anyone from noticing his presence even if he tries to draw their attention to him. Unless they can see chakra.
  • Noodle Incident: Las Pegasus. They mention a few things, such as losing Sakura for 6 hours and Lee winning a champion belt, but don't quite mention how these things happened or much of anything else besides it being good blackmail material for all of them.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: In the Forest Of Death during the Chuunin Exams, Luna fights and drives off Orochimaru. However, the narrative focuses entirely on Sasuke and his new Cursed Seal while this is happening.
  • Oh, Crap!: A certain spirit of chaos seems to have made his way to the Elemental Nations for unknown reasons, save for wanting to watch Naruto's efforts to become Hokage.
  • Personal Raincloud: Naruto creates a jutsu that he can use for this.
  • Pet the Dog: Gaara's interactions with Sweetie Belle, which end up helping to defuse his Ax-Crazy tendencies and facilitate his Heel–Face Turn.
  • Physical God: Luna and Celestia both as they prove during the Sound invasion.
  • The Power of Friendship: What do you expect in a crossover like this?
  • Power Perversion Potential: Not intended, but Sakura asks Chouji if all his body parts expand, which makes him turn beet red.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • Sasuke gives Sakura a pretty brutal one which mirrors the fandom's main problems with her.
    • In fact, Sasuke seems to be pretty good at dishing these out to anyone.
  • Red Shirt Army: Lampshaded by Naruto with the army of mooks in Snow Country. A minor twist as it's the heroic side that has the army.
  • Running Gag:
    • The previously mentioned lampshading of the problems with ninja physics.
    • The party cannon full of cake batter, as it's tradition.
    • Sakura really didn't mean to break that door. Honest!
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Naruto, or at least his Shadow Clones. Though, considering one of Deidara's exploding-clay spiders had just quit playing dead, leapt at him and latched onto his face, the girly-scream is understandable.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Spanner in the Works: All of the extra combatants during the Rescue Sasuke arc.
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • The Third Hokage, thanks to Luna helping him against Orochimaru.
    • All of the Snow Country rebels, thanks to Twilight's preemptive strike.
  • Sphere of Destruction: Combined with Wave-Motion Gun in the Sonic Rainboom Rasengan
  • Talking the Monster to Death: Naruto manages to do this to a minority of the changeling cause who then decide to try living as normal ponies.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • Who would've thought ponies made such great ninja tutors?
    • After Sasuke gave her a "The Reason You Suck" Speech, Sakura took it to heart and has trained herself to be an incredible ninja, unlike most kunoichi of the ninja world.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Kurenai and Tenten both seem to be a lot crueler than their canon counterparts.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Watching Naruto get tossed through buildings and assaulted by Tsunade isn't nearly as interesting as Twilight Sparkle's discussion on pony ninjas, apparently. The ponies are, in general, becoming this in Konoha thanks to Naruto's efforts.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Naruto and Sasuke's efforts to help Sakura out during their battle with Deidara and Sasori causes numerous disasters which nearly get Sakura pincushioned by wind and fire chakra-laced shuriken. She even says the trope almost word for word.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: combined with Sphere of Destruction in the Sonic Rainboom Rasengan.
