Trapped within the vacuous bounds of space, how far can your sensibilities decay before you've lost your sense of self?
”Around four years ago, the world ended. Historians, researchers, scholars... even people out on the street all called it the closest thing to an apocalypse in humankind, with a complete degradation of culture, civilization, and uniformity. It was only cemented by the broadcast of the first Mutual Killing Game, showcasing the shining hopes of Japan forced into despair.
But against all odds, they prevailed. And although there certainly was an uphill battle ahead of them - a new, radiant hope came to fruition. Known as the Future Foundation, these were former students from across the world at the peak of their profession, all fighting for a better future. And despite despair's best attempts to quash them, the final Killing Game ended in a tumultuous victory for Hope. At last, the balance began to shift.
Now, the dwellers of Earth are slowly beginning to rebuild. The worst has surely past... but despite that, despair still exists in leaps and bounds across the world. And although you, a former Ultimate yourself, thought the storm had blown over... such naivety resulted in your own kidnapping. Now, get ready to enter the hallowed frigate of legacies: The Elysian Ruby, thousands of miles away from any living being. With fifteen others, distrust will quickly grow. Trapped within the vacuous bounds of space, how far can your sensibilities decay before you've lost your sense of self?”

Celestial Despair: The Cosmic Confluence in Conspiratorial Confinement is a discord-based Danganronpa roleplay group, and sequel to Brilliant Despair: A Heartbreaking Voyage through a Deceptive Sea, featuring a cast of sixteen original characters, all of whom are graduates of Hope’s Peak Academy. Being mysteriously abducted, all of them awaken on the Elysian Ruby, with two decidedly non-humanoid hosts informing them they’re stuck in space until somebody snaps.

Now, supposedly trapped in the limitless confines of space, all the former Ultimates know exactly what they need to do: either adapt to their new life, or kill like so many others before them have to attempt to escape. Will any of them take that risk, well aware of the fate awaiting them should they be found out? Or will they choose to stay and adapt, knowing it’s only a matter of time before the first motive, and by extension the killing game, kicks off?

The RP is on the first chapter as of January 13th, 2020.

Anda Serizawa

Ultimate Motivator

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1e2fb908_8e24_4c12_b891_c09fc6e7ed89.png
Anda Serizawa is a Japanese motivator and author of best selling Alienation in the Big World. She is widely renowned for her work in motivation and inspiring people around the world. She is particularly infamous for her work in hospitals and encouragement to sickly children. Since starting, the death rate in her hometown of Sagamihara has decreased by 2.6%. After graduating from Hope’s Peak Academy, Anda went bigger and better in her speeches and goals. Even during the tragedy, she worked even harder to fight against despair, trying to help cultivate the new, hopeful future.

Anda is alive as of chapter 3. However, she was targeted during the first murder.

  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Shares her feelings for Momoka shortly before the latter’s execution occurs.
  • Break the Cutie: While it hasn’t fully occurred, Anda has shown strong signs of denial and emotional distress.
  • Failure-to-Save Murder: Averted. Despite having removed the knife from Gryff, Anda was not held accountable for his death, especially since she hadn’t set the fatal trap.
  • Genki Girl: The first thing that people are likely to notice, Anda seems to have a never-ending upbeat attitude.
  • Last Kiss: Shares one and a dance with Momoka shortly before Momoka is executed.
  • The Pollyanna: Even after being attacked and finding a cleaver in her door, she absolutely refuses to believe anybody has any ill-will or that Gryff is dead until multiple people confirm it and show her the corpse.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: What happened after she and Gryff were (presumably) attacked. She tried to save Gryff and failed. She did purposefully obscure the fact the killer tried to frame her, however.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: What’s Anda’s reaction after finding a cleaver in her door? Go search in the dark with only one other person for whoever was playing a joke on her!
  • You Did Everything You Could: Ultimately the truth of Gryff’s death. Anda did her best to save Gryff, and did extraordinarily well considering the circumstances. If the killer hadn’t planned ahead and removed supplies, chances are Anda would’ve been able to stop his bleeding.

Alexis Holland

Ultimate Video Editor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cd873128_6890_4dd5_b2f3_d53471503cac.png
When watching videos over the internet, most people aren’t aware of who’s responsible for them. Alexis Holland was different. Her skills have been utilized all over the internet by an assortment of huge content creators, low budget filmmakers, and small businesses. With vast knowledge of editing software she created engaging, fun, and thought provoking content for all ages that never failed to capture the attention of a viewer. After her graduation, she surely had many ideas for future projects, but they were never fulfilled ever since the Tragedy.

Alexis is alive as of chapter 3.

  • Only Sane Man: Played with. Alexis certainly comes off as one of the saner members in a wild group, though she’s not the only one.

Momoka Hiiragi

Ultimate Theme Park Worker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/89d87072_75db_459c_be12_e72f4167087a.png
The granddaughter of the founder of Hiiragi Animation Studios, Momoka Hiiragi has devoted herself to all things related to upkeep of the family’s theme park, Hiiragiville. Whether she is a friendly face welcoming people at Hiiragiville’s entrance, performing as a character actor, working behind the scenes, or opening Hiiragiville as a safe haven for victims of the Tragedy, Momoka is widely known as a diligent, polite, kind woman who loves to put smiles on peoples’ faces.

Momoka is the second killer of chapter 2, and executed for killing Daichi.

  • Accidental Murder: Played with. Momoka hadn’t realized that Daichi would be unable to swim when she pushed him into the pool. She ultimately decided to pull a Mercy Kill rather than let him drown, however.
  • The Alcoholic: Shows shades of this, especially when it came to the flask item from the gacha.
  • Cheery Pink: While Momoka isn’t as cheery as Anda, she’s certainly kind-hearted and comes off as rather cheerful compared to some of the others.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Played with. While Momoka still didn’t want to be caught, it’s entirely possible Daichi would’ve killed everybody if she hadn’t confronted him.
  • Last Kiss: Shares one of these and a dance with Anda shortly before Momoka is executed.
  • Mercy Kill: Momoka chooses to electrocute Daichi rather than let him just drown, thinking it would be a more merciful death.
  • Off with Her Head!: Momoka’s execution ends with her decapitation.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Momoka’s design seems to indicate so, anyways. She brings to mind a Disney princess.

Risa Forneo

Ultimate Podcaster

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/71ef9fc9_5d0d_4707_abf9_b5f678a13856.png
As a teenager, Risa ran one of the most popular podcasts of the era: The Scene, which discussed music associated with the emo and goth subcultures. There was no surprise when she was invited to be the Ultimate Podcaster. Once she graduated, she shifted to producing podcasts surrounding other topics, her most successful one being Nostalgia’s Peak. After the Tragedy, she began wandering the remnants of North America. Her newest radio program, known colloquially as Risa’s Show, brings smiles to the faces of tens of thousands of survivors.

Risa is alive as of chapter 3.

  • It's All My Fault: After Wylie’s corpse is discovered, Risa blames herself because she received a threatening note warning her against hosting any more parties.
  • It's Personal: Though less violent and angry than the usual trope, Risa takes Wylie’s death personally and seeks to get her justice.
  • Team Chef: Organizes a group dinner, and can apparently cook well, according to herself.
  • Team Mom: Comes off as this, trying to keep unity while doing things like cooking for other graduates and looking out for their well-being.

Wylie Lovell

Ultimate Babysitter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/088bb4a1_2ecb_4474_951b_33ae5b2e8772.png
A member of Ultimates Across the Nation, an organization of former Hope’s Peak students engaging in humanitarian efforts all around the world, the image of Wylie Lovell, the former Ultimate Babysitter, is one downtrodden children everywhere have grown to call mother. A particular figurehead who was damaged by her own difficult early life, she strives to improve those of others. That being said, there have been complaints to UAtN that she’s nowhere near as proper as she appears in advertisements…

Wylie is the chapter 2 victim, found dead inside the piano in the music room during a party.

  • The Alcoholic: Talking to Wylie for just a few seconds is enough to reveal this fact. Her official sprite even has a bottle!
  • Childhood Brain Damage: Mentioned by Wylie when talking about her past, supposedly the result of an injury her pregnant mother faced, causing her to speak with a permanent slurred voice. Doesn’t seem to bother her, except during the jealousy mood gas, where she forces herself to act "normal".
  • The Ditz: Not the brightest bulb in the box, and very aware of it, liking to think of herself as more of a Brainless Beauty.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Hates baby carrots with a passion. She delivers a whole speech about it!
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: As a child caregiver who's dedicated her life to altruism, Wylie is definitely this.
  • Leave No Witnesses: Ultimately the reason Wylie had to be killed; she walked in on Daichi setting up traps and tried to stop him once she realized something was wrong.
  • Too Good for This Sinful Earth: Wylie was regarded as a good person by most, so her death really hit hard.

Medea Mavros

Ultimate Mechanical Engineer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ed8d0701_44fb_4a82_bbac_f2e21c34b0ea.png
Medea developed her interests in mechanical engineering during childhood, eventually starting a blog to catalogue her projects as time went on. As the blog gained a strong following, she gained contact with companies around Greece, interested in getting her help for various projects. After getting accepted to Hope's Peak, Medea began to branch out with her pursuits, and after graduating, opted to live a calmer and more comfortable life, without having to worry about the tribulations of the working world.

Medea is alive as of chapter 3.

  • Prematurely Grey-Haired: Medea isn’t as old as her appearance may lead you to believe.
  • Talk to the Fist: Isn’t afraid to get physical. She even punches Naozumi in the face after the events of the second trial.

Yumena Ezura

Ultimate Tarento

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/09e9d662_9491_4cf7_a3e0_e3aef6d39df9.png
Yumena Ezura may not have been very active in the past four years following the Tragedy, but that's far from an excuse not to know who she is. Famous for, well, being famous, no one's exactly sure where Yumena got her start. She came into the spotlight when she was only fifteen, gained a large mass of followers and love. She’s been invited onto reality tv shows, produced music, and even did cameos in movies. Yumena is reported to regularly donate to charity, and puts her good deeds all over social media.

Yumena is alive as of chapter 3. She was revealed to be the traitor, approached by the mastermind beforehand and worked underneath him.

  • Freudian Excuse: Apparently, Yumena used to be a lot nicer if her classmates’s statements are any indicator. It was mentioned a very close friend of hers got murdered by the reverse course students, which could function as an explanation for her less than pleasant behavior. Subverted, possibly, as Yumena has claimed she was playing nice due to her reputation. Since the Tragedy occurred, it just doesn’t matter anymore.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Yumena’s behavior means most, if not all of, the cast have little to no patience for her. Even Anda has been proven to be irritated by her.
  • It's All About Me: Somebody murdered? Yumena has to reapply makeup so she can’t investigate.
  • Jerkass: Shows no truly redeeming qualities when talking to others, most of the time.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Yumena isn’t wrong to note people should be suspicious of Naozumi since he’s a former Remnant of Despair and serial killer, and he could possibly be a serious threat if he ever relapses.

    Male Graduates

Hideki Kishida

Ultimate Criminal Psychologist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3f1fc931_f416_4b0e_9fd5_4b0d7c8b679c.png
Dr. Hideki Kishida has been in the business for quite a long time. Thrust into the world of criminals when his dad was arrested for embezzlement, his claim to fame came in an autobiography. Memoirs from a Grieving Child aimed to be both an analysis on his own life, and the life of crime his father led - a prodigal piece from a sixteen year old. Having published eight more pieces since then analyzing criminal mindsets (alongside two directed documentaries), he certainly has earned his title, but he retired long before the Tragedy hit.

Hideki is the killer of chapter 3, bludgeoning Kotaro with a skeeball, while being interrogated by him.

  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Legitimately snaps at Daichi after he dismisses Anda’s trauma one too many times during the trial.
  • Secret-Keeper: Served as one to Naozumi until the second trial, originally aware of his past as a Remnant.

Kotaro Daigo

Ultimate Archaeologist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c33056bf_2896_41a6_a4a5_f57f35b6e7ef.png
A graduate of Hope’s Peak’s 68th class, Kotaro Daigo has since made a name for himself as one of the world’s foremost scholars, with expertise in many different civilizations and archeological eras. Kotaro has led expeditions in the field across five different continents, is a frequent speaker at archeological seminars and scientific conventions, and has been responsible for the discovery and reclamation of previously lost artifacts that are now on display in museums the world over. Most recently, he has taken up a teaching position at Tohoku University, as a professor of Egyptian art and archeology.

Kotaro is the chapter 3 victim, after kidnapping Hideki, his plan somehow went awry when he was killed via a skeeball. He was also the mastermind of the game, kidnapping everybody and placing them upon the Elysian Ruby. However, the game continued even with his absense.

  • Badass Teacher: Considering he’s an Ultimate. What’s more badass than the best of the best?
  • Only Sane Man: Played with. Amidst the wilder personalities, Kotaro comes off as this.

Daichi Wada

Ultimate Astronomer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/06e9e40d_a2b4_4d67_bd7c_6425332f9973.png
Daichi Wada, initially known for self-published astronomy papers and a few successful research projects during his time at Hope’s Peak, has thrown himself in a completely different direction upon graduation. Daichi Wada is dead set on an acting career, and has several commercial advertisements, K-drama pilots, and even an independent feature film under his belt. With a complete disregard to his previous talent, Daichi seems to be shooting for a different kind of stardom, even if a certain apocalypse tries to get in his way.

Daichi is the second victim of chapter 2, found dead in the pool. However, he also was the first killer of the chapter, responsible for Wylie Lovell’s murder.

  • The Cynic: He makes it clear he trusts nobody, even if he’s willing to tolerate some of the others, and expects a murder to occur.
  • Gotta Kill 'Em All: Under the influence of the impulsive mood gas, Daichi decides to set up fatal gas traps throughout the ship so he’d be able to end the game by killing everybody on board.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Played with during the first trial. While Daichi was right to say Anda withholding information during the first trial was wrong and could’ve gotten them killed, she was still traumatized by the fact she had witnessed Gryff die and had been repressing the trauma, and Daichi was dismissing it.
    • Played with again during the second chapter. He’s right to note that the killing game will go on and that they’ll be continually forced to play until something drastic happens. However, his choice to kill everybody was still drastic.
  • Mythology Gag: Daichi Wada was a notoriously bad app submitted for the previous roleplay, who starred in a movie with Phil Swift on the second island. Another admin decided to try their take on Daichi, and apparently succeeded in making him.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: While he chose a horrible, painful way to kill everybody, Daichi did want to end the killing game. He just chose the worst and only way he thought he could.

Naozumi Shimizu

Ultimate Orthodontist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/653366bf_1a9b_42b5_ad4c_b4c2b60a69cc.png
Naozumi Shimizu is most widely known for his impeccable dentistry skills and affordable, if not strange, prices. He first rose to regional notability at age 15, when he single handedly funded and opened his own orthodontic clinic. With high approval, the only complaints that had been recorded were of Dr. Shimizu’s odd demeanor and request that his patients donate a tooth before applying for his services. Regardless, his advancements in the field of dentistry have perhaps changed the entire industry. He continued to study his field with increasing progress, but disappeared during the onset of the tragedy.

Naozumi is alive as of chapter 3, though he was responsible for messing with the body in chapter 2.

  • Depraved Dentist: What a few of the other Ultimates believe. Nao doesn’t rush to disprove these statements. Becomes even more apparent when Naozumi is revealed as a former Remnant of Despair.
  • Dissonant Serenity: While he seems to understand the gravity of the situation, Nao remains relatively unfazed by the murder.
  • Reformed Criminal: Played with. Naozumi is apparently a reformed Remnant of Despair (and serial killer), though during the second chapter, under effects of the motive, he relapses and ends up stealing Wylie’s teeth from her corpse.
  • Scary Teeth: Nao reveals during the second trial he has a mouth full of animal teeth, which disturbs mostly everybody.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: One of Nao’s strong beliefs, as he believes fate guides everybody, and isn’t always kind.

Gryff Gabheart

Ultimate Interior Designer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9aa29325_f188_4395_9d80_591cd20969c5.png
Although many folks have heard of Gryff’s interior design prowess, the true extent of his talent eluded him until he got to high school. The hallways of his own school were so terribly tacky that Gryff began leaving anonymous notes around the school, giving the administration practical advice for how to improve. He started doing this around other schools, and soon enough, his school district got crowned “The Most Stylish School District in The World”. Since graduation, he’s become more obscure on the interior design scene, but that doesn’t change that getting to see the Elysian Ruby, in all its manmade glory, is a dream come true for Gryff.

Gryff is the chapter 1 victim, investigating mysterious happenings with Anda at night before being found dead in the infirmary.

  • Dies Wide Open: Averted. It’s something a few characters comment on being interesting.
  • Exotic Eye Designs: Has small hearts in his eyes.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Pushes Anda out of the way of the trap in the incinerator room at the cost of his own life.

Connor Byrne

Ultimate Candlepin Bowler

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f904db1c_526f_434d_af7c_882430ff4220.png
Connor Byrne was a sports prodigy from a young age, taking up candlepin bowling as a hobby originally until he fell in love with the sport, taking it on full time. At the age of twelve, Connor bowled the first-ever sanctioned perfect game of candlepin bowling and continued to win tournaments all around the New England area. After attending Hope’s Peak, Connor settled down and lived a quiet life with his former wife and kids. He hasn’t bowled since Hope’s Peak, nor has he accomplished anything quite spectacular - unless you consider a messy divorce that.

Connor is alive as of chapter 3.

  • Amicably Divorced: Averted. His profile indicates the divorce he and his wife went through was messy.
  • Papa Wolf: The first experiment demonstrated that he would do anything to protect his kids.
  • Team Dad: Even if he doesn’t always show it, it becomes especially obvious when he’s interacting with Anda.

    Nonbinary Graduates

Fletcher/Percy Fletcher

Ultimate Aquarium Keeper

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a22829d4_be4c_454f_8626_57bd4f0b8c46.png
The age of true machine sapience is yet to come, but Fletcher is the first step in making that future a reality! They’re an AI developed by the Future Foundation for the oversight of the organization’s largest aquatic wildlife preserve. While other AI personalities have been modeled after former Hope’s Peak students, stuck behind the computer screen, Fletcher is the first program with a physical body. For the past several years, they’ve single handedly been responsible for the protection and restoration of over 800 species in the Coral Sea, endangered as a result of the Tragedy. When it comes to caring for sea creatures, Fletcher is a natural.

Fletcher is the killer of chapter 1, having set up the trap that killed Gryff while under the influence of the motive.

  • Artificial Intelligence: What Fletcher is. Later averted; Fletcher is human, but due to their loss of memory was under the impression they were an A.I.
  • Bungled Suicide: Percy Fletcher ended up attempting this after Junko Enoshima’s demise, being part of Ultimate Despair and all. He failed, and eventually the Future Foundation found him.
  • Death Seeker: What Ultimate Despair member Percy Fletcher turns out to be, considering he wanted to be found as the culprit and executed.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Turns out to be what happened to Percy. The Future Foundation used him as a guinea pig in a beta version of the Neo World Program. It resulted in Percy’s memories being wiped, and the Future Foundation covered it all up by telling them they were an A.I. The motive ends up restoring his memories part of the time.
  • Loss of Identity: What ended up happening to Percy Fletcher, which was honestly for the better as demonstrated by the first chapter of Celestial Despair.
  • Odd Friendship: With S.B. Fletcher is optimistic and friendly compared to the secluded and eccentric horror novelist.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Played with. Daichi recognizes the Ultimate Aquarium Keeper as having been Percy Fletcher rather than an A.I. named Fletcher. Their personalities, however, appear to be opposite of each other, and Fletcher seems to possess no knowledge of Percy. It's eventually revealed that Fletcher is Percy Fletcher, just without any memories thanks to the Future Foundation wiping them.

S.B.

Ultimate Horror Novelist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/96cc3a10_c50b_498d_8260_0b6760305f2d.png
The mysterious S.B. first came into the light when they, at the age of 15, wrote a best-selling horror novel that went flying off the shelves. Summer’s Diary subverted the usual tropes of a diary-themed horror novel and had readers clamoring for more works. S.B. accepted a movie deal shortly after arriving at HPA. The resulting movie dazzled audiences everywhere and left the public desperate for another work. It was only until after the Tragedy that they released their next book: A Shallow Hope. Combining action and horror, it managed to give an odd sense of comfort to survivors of such an event.

S.B. is alive as of chapter 3.

  • Doom Magnet: So far both their friends have been suspected (or successfully accused) of being killers. Both have been Remnants of Despair too.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Played with. S.B. has had pleasant interactions with others and appears harmless, but has had strange outbursts and reactions to people and items found in the ship.
  • Odd Friendship: With Fletcher. While S.B. is eccentric and isolated, Fletcher is friendly and innocent.
  • White Mask of Doom: Subverted. While S.B. comes off as creepy, they’ve yet to do anything malicious.

███/Intisar Ghazali

Cryptanalyst

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a6bc8278_44af_4930_b88d_c1426b5cba34.png

Countries, cooperations, comrades - the Former Ultimate Cryptanalyst has learned that seeing through their lies takes eyes undistracted from even the most basic roots of what defines them. They want to look down on a world squeaky clean from the plague of secrecy. Ironically, this is juxtaposed by their own disposition: they’re faceless, nameless, ageless, and no one knows where exactly they’ve come from or where they intend on going. Regardless of all this, the message they preach is clear.

███ is alive as of chapter 3.

    Spoiler Characters

Tate Carson

Ultimate Animal Caretaker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tate_2.png

Known for being one of the most dedicated animal handlers there is, Tate Carson found early fame from the names he gave his animals- for example, ‘Shitty Kitty’. Despite the notoriety and odd fan base he garnered, there was not one person who could deny how meticulous and careful he was with his craft, sheltering numerous homeless animals of all breeds. Since then, he’s been up to quite a fair bit: ranging from participating in numerous killing games, to meddling in dangerous schemes way bigger than he will ever be.

Tate is alive as of chapter 3.

For tropes relating to Tate’s previous appearance, please go here.

  • Call-Back: Ignoring Tate’s entire existence, his reaction to Daichi is amused disbelief. During the second chapter of Brilliant Despair, Daichi appeared in a movie Tate and a few other classmates were unlucky enough to be forced to watch.
  • Cassandra Truth: Out of character, Tate’s player kept claiming Tate was in CD. Brushed off as a joke, many people were shocked to discover it was true.

Celestial Despair contains examples of:

  • Amateur Sleuth: Played with. While the majority of the students can be assumed to not possess any investigative knowledge, there is a criminal psychologist present, and plenty of people with knowledge of previous killing games, which could help them out.
  • Anyone Can Die: Once the admin of a character and the mods decide time’s up for a character, they’re no longer safe. Anybody could be signed up for that chapter’s death slot(s).
  • Black Blood: The blood is pink, a staple of the Danganronpa series.
  • Body of the Week: One death, minimum, is guaranteed per chapter.
  • Cast of Snowflakes: Former Ultimates, having lived through the Tragedy, designed by different people? Each is guaranteed to be wonderfully unique and quirky.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: As per Danganronpa tradition, each execution falls into this category. Interestingly enough, most characters are keenly aware of this.
  • Deadly Game: Like any other Danganronpa-styled game, the only way to escape is to successfully murder one of your peers. Failing will result in death via execution.
  • Developing Doomed Characters: The OCs created aren’t all going to live, after all. The name of the game is to murder in cold blood, so building up the characters before some inevitable demises is only natural given the environment. So far:
    • Chapter One’s victim Gryff Gabheart, Former Ultimate Interior Designer.
    • Chapter One’s killer Fletcher, Former Ultimate Aquarium Keeper.
    • Chapter Two's victim Wylie Lovell, Former Ultimate Babysitter.
    • Chapter Two's victim and killer Daichi Wada, Former Ultimate Astronomer.
    • Chapter Two's killer Momoka Hiiragi , Former Ultimate Theme Park Worker .
  • Dwindling Party: The nature of the game guarantees that the small group of former Ultimates will only grow smaller.
  • Emotion Control: The second experiment, where various gases are released, influencing people's emotions. So far they consist of:
    • Jealousy, bringing out insecurities and envy.
    • Joy, bringing out immense happiness.
    • Apathy, bringing out lack of any feeling.
    • Fury, bringing out rage in everyone.
    • Impulsiveness, bringing out rashly made decisions.
  • Everyone Is a Suspect: Given the nature of the game, nobody is above suspicion.
  • Famed In-Story: As graduates of Hope’s Peak Academy, each of the characters trapped here have made quite a name for themselves.
  • Gilded Cage: The Elysian Ruby, despite being a space ship, is surprisingly nice. However, it also serves as the location for the killing game, and does little to comfort the former students.
  • Hallucinations: Part of the Chapter 1 experiment. Aside from all the lights turning off, everybody is subjected to random hallucinations that are meant to target their worst fears or triggering memories.
  • A House Divided: Considering the nature of the killing game, it’s almost guaranteed. In Chapter 1, there's a fight that leaves somebody with wounds.
  • Lights Off, Somebody Dies: Part of the first experiment. All lights remain off until somebody kills, combined with triggering hallucinations.
  • Mythology Gag: Daichi Wada, the notoriously bad app from Brilliant Despair, ended up being made and accepted as a character for Celestial Despair. Every bit of lore established, from what we know, has been made canon somehow.
  • Public Execution: Should a killer fail to get away with murder, they can expect a personalized execution with plenty of Irony awaiting them.
  • Teen Genius: What all the characters once were, considering they’re all former Ultimates. Each was considered skilled enough in their field they were scouted by Hope’s Peak Academy.
  • Translation Convention: Hope’s Peak Academy is Japanese, and it can be assumed most of the former Ultimates are speaking it. However, everything is in English, similar to the games.
  • Win Your Freedom: Do you want to escape the confines of space? Just kill somebody and get away with it during the class trial!
  • You All Meet in a Cell: The characters all wake up in the Elysian Ruby, a spaceship. They have no idea how they got on, nor do they have any idea of how to get off, besides the game of murder presented to them that the party is trying to avoid.
