The Troopers

    In General
Three young adults given the ability to become the VR Troopers.

    Ryan Steele

Portrayed by: Brad Hawkins

The son of Tyler Steele, one of the scientists who first developed the Virtual Reality. His search for his missing father leads him and his friends to stumble upon Professor Horatio Hart's laboratory.

Second Suit

First Suit

  • Blue Is Heroic: Ryan's second form is mainly a darker blue.
  • Composite Character: His first and second forms come from Metalder and Shaider respectively, while his backstory of having lost his father appears to be taken from Spielban.
  • Cool Bike: Ryan rides two different flight-capable motorcycles (the sidecar-equipped VR Turbo Cycle in season 1, and the winged VR Nitro Cycle in season 2), in addition to a normal motorcycle in civilian form.
  • Cool Ship: Gains access to a flying blue shuttle in season 2, which deploys his Nitro Cycle and Combat Module, and turns into his VR Shoulder Cannon.
  • The Hero: Ryan is the main character of the series, and the one who pushes the plot forward with his search for his father.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Non-lethal variant. At the beginning of season 2, Ryan overexerts himself while in his VR form to save JB, Kaitlin and his father, costing him his fighting form.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Loses his Trooper form several episodes into season 2, but gains a new one from his father almost immediately after.
  • Primary-Color Champion: His first form is red and blue on either side with bright silver all throughout.
  • Tank Goodness: Season 2 gives him the VR Combat Module; like the VR Battlecruiser, it splits into the VR Blue Hawk and a drill tank.

    JB Reese

Portrayed by: Michael Bacon

Ryan's best friend and a computer whiz, who teaches with him at the Tao Dojo.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e458d80c_5779_4cf8_acfe_7d3017c53543.jpeg

  • Black and Nerdy: Black and skilled at computer programming.
  • Composite Character: Though he uses Spielban's armor and weapons, he's more akin to Metalder's human friend Hakko.
  • Cool Bike: Like Ryan, he drives his own motorcycle as a civilian, and has a flight-capable motorcycle, the VR Fighterbike/Skycycle, in Trooper form.
  • Demoted to Extra: Downplayed. Spielban was the main protagonist of his show, while here his counterpart is one of three heroes. He still gets plenty of episodes focusing on him.
  • Laser Blade: His Laser Lance.
  • The Smart Guy: Given his knowledge of computers he usually acts as this for the team, and occasionally assists Professor Hart with stuff he can't physically do.
  • The Unreveal: No one knows what "JB" stands for.

    Kaitlin Starr

Portrayed by: Sarah Brown

Ryan and JB's mutual friend, and a budding reporter for the Underground Voice Daily.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e529806d_1deb_494e_bf08_3fd1b290558f.jpeg

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c620e433_6cfc_4159_b54f_0e9953e4367d.jpeg

  • Action Girl: She's just as competent a fighter as the males on her team.
  • Composite Character: Her duplicate was actually an entirely separate character in Spielban, Spielban's sister Helen, as well as the alter ego of the Red Python's counterpart Hellvira, making this a case of Decomposite Character as well.
    • She also acts as the equivalent to Mai, Metalder's reporter friend, and to Annie, Shaider's unarmored partner (who was played by the same actress as Helen, funnily enough).
  • Cool Car: Drives a Mazda 323 that was modified by Professor Hart to become a Flying Car.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Always on the lookout for something she can write an article on.
  • Sinister Scythe: Wields a double-bladed sickle weapon at times.

Their Allies

    Professor Horatio Hart

Portrayed by: Julian Combs

The VR Troopers' mentor. He was once a colleague of Tyler Steele who worked with him on the Virtual Reality project. After being mortally injured by Grimlord's forces, Tyler Steele transferred his mind into a computer in order to save him.
  • Big Good: He's the one who assembled the Troopers to combat Grimlord and the Virtual Army.
  • Expy: Hmmm, an immobile figure who appears as a face in a machine and acts as a mentor to the heroes? Sounds a lot like Zordon.
  • The Mentor: To the VR Troopers, teaching them how to use their powers and giving them advice on the field.
  • Mission Control: Gives the Troopers intel on Grimlord's forces and advice and data on Virtual Reality.
  • Non-Action Guy: Since he's a figure on a computer screen he can't actually take to the field himself.

    Tyler Steele

Portrayed by: David Carr

Voiced by: Kerrigan Mahan / Richard Epcar (as Dark Heart)

Ryan's father and Horatio Hart's colleague, who went missing prior to the start of the series. It later turns out he was Reforged into a Minion by Grimlord into the mysterious Dark Heart.
  • Composite Character: Though his status as the co-creator of the VR Troopers' powers is akin to Dr. Koga of Metalder, his role as Dark Heart is taken from another Metalder character, Topgunder.
  • Decomposite Character: His backstory as the father of The Hero who was Reforged into a Minion appears to be taken from Doctor Bio, Colonel Icebot's counterpart in Spielban.
  • Good Parents: By all accounts he raised Ryan well and taught him a lot of good lessons.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: He's responsible for developing Virtual Reality and the technology that gave the Troopers their powers, but he's absent for much of the series, spending part of it as Dark Heart and part of it as Grimlord's captive. He later joins the team after escaping in season 2 only to be Put on a Bus and appear infrequently thereafter.

    Tao Chong

Portrayed by: Richard Rabago

The owner of the Tao Dojo and the one who trained Ryan, JB and Kaitlin in karate.
  • Badass Normal: He's a normal guy, but he's still able to handle a group of Skugs when they attack his dojo. He's also the one who taught the Troopers everything they know about karate.
  • The Mentor: Acts as one to the heroes in their everyday lives. He taught them karate and occasionally gives them life advice.
  • Parental Substitute: Towards Ryan, who looked up to him as a father figure after his real father mysteriously vanished.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Possibly. Given how often the Ryan, JB and Kaitlin have to leave to do something in Virtual Reality, and how cool Tao is with them, it's implied he may know about them being VR Troopers. (Considering Tao was to be the primary ally of Ryan's prototype Adam Steele in the Cybertron pilot, this theory holds water.)

    Jeb

Portrayed by: Zeb the dog

Voiced by: Kerrigan Mahan

Ryan's dog, a Redbone Coonhound, who ends up gaining the ability to speak after an accident in Professor Hart's lab. He generally functions as comic relief, though he does assist the Troopers when possible.
  • Adaptational Species Change: His Metalder counterpart Springer was a robot designed to look like a Doberman Pinscher; here he's a Redbone Coonhound accidentally given the ability to talk.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Once got turned into a mutant monster by Grimlord, though the Troopers managed to get him back to normal.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: Once suffered this between him and Ryan, forcing Jeb to briefly fight in Ryan's VR form until the swap could be reversed.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Frequently delivers karmic retribution towards Percy or his aunt.
  • Talking Animal: Gained the ability to speak after he accidentally activated some of the lab's equipment.

    Woody

Portrayed by: Michael Sorich

Kaitlyn's boss at the Underground Voice Daily. Also comic relief, though his assignments for Kaitlyn frequently wind up somehow involved in Grimlord's plans.

    Percival "Percy" Rooney III

Portrayed by: Aaron Pruner

Another comic relief character, he's Kaitlyn's annoying rival at the Underground Voice Daily. He's also the nephew of Cross World City's mayor, Abner Rooney; said mayor is not only cowed by Karl Ziktor, but by his wife as well.
  • Butt-Monkey: Courtesy of Jeb, or else his own actions.
  • Expy: Of Miles from Murphy Brown.
  • Nepotism: Likely a major reason Woody even hired him, given his connections to Mayor Rooney.
  • The Rival: To Kaitlyn, though Percy's the only one who takes said rivalry seriously.

Grimlord's Virtual Army

    In General
An assortment of robots, mutants and cyborgs who serve Grimlord in Virtual Reality.
  • Co-Dragons: Because of the below mentioned Composite Character, there are many different commanders working for Grimlord, though General Ivar is the closest to a full-on dragon, with Decimator from season 1 and Oraclon from season 2 being the only ones to rival him in terms of importance. Colonel Icebot could also count; though Icebot seemingly ranks beneath Ivar, both of them seem to hold equal sway with Grimlord and sometimes bicker between each other.
  • Composite Character: Composite faction, in this case — the footage of the villains were taken from three different villain groups. In Season 1, General Ivar, Colonel Icebot, the Skugs, most of the air and tank forces as well as any monsters who faced JB and Kaitlyn all hailed from Spielban's Waller Empire, while the Virtual Warriors from the Virtual Dungeon and Grimlord himself came from the Neros Empire of Metalder. Season 2 saw the Wahrer Empire's members being carried over, but new villains adapted from the Fuuma of Shaider were introduced to replace the Metalder villains, as the stock footage of them had run out. Grimlord also went from being portrayed by footage of God Neros from Metalder to gaining his own suit, enabling him to walk around instead of sit on a throne.
    • Also, the Neros Empire was divided into four armies in Metalder; here they were all more-or-less merged into a single faction.
  • Cool Plane: The various jet fighters and in season 2, the Grimstars. Also the jet component of Ivar's Ravage Tank.
  • Cool Ship: The giant shark-themed Quantum Cruisers, which can drop missiles, as well as open their jaws to drop bombs that in turn deploy tanks (though sometimes they just blow things up). The Gargantus — a weird vessel shaped like a frowning face capable of firing missiles and a large cannon — also verges into this.
  • Large Ham: The whole army. "HAIL GRIMLORD! MASTER OF THE VIRTUAL WORLD!"
  • Monster of the Week: A new Virtual Warrior is sent out to fight the VR Troopers every week. Zig-zagged in that many appear more than once, and most appear at the beginning of the first episode.
  • Standard Evil Empire Hierarchy: Two different formations.
    • Season 1
      • The Emperor: Grimlord
      • The Right Hand: Decimator
      • The General: Zelton
      • The Guard: General Ivar, as commander of the Air Castle.
      • The Oddball: Colonel Icebot.
      • Evil Counterpart: Dark Heart
    • Season 2
      • The Emperor: Grimlord
      • The Right Hand: Despera
      • The General: Doom Master
      • The Guard: General Ivar, keeping his role from the previous season
      • The Oddball: Oraclon
  • Supervillain Lair: The Virtual Dungeon in Season 1. Later replaced by the spaceship-like Virtual Dark Fortress in Season 2. There's also the flying Air Castle where General Ivar and Colonel Icebot typically hang out (Desponda used it herself in season 2).
  • Tank Goodness: Whenever there's a major ground battle, Grimlord typically likes to use tanks (piloted by Skugs). General Ivar had his personal Ravage Tank, which (like the VR Battlecruiser) could split into a jet fighter and a ground vehicle (with a big spinning sawblade).

    Karl Ziktor/Grimlord

Portrayed/Voiced by: Gardner Baldwin

The ruler of the Virtual Warriors and alter-ego of Karl Ziktor, billionaire CEO of Ziktor Industries. He seeks to tear down the reality barrier so his armies can invade from the Virtual Reality and conquer the Earth.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Extremely downplayed. While still a Bad Boss villain, he's nowhere near as monstrous as God Neros and lacks anything resembling his Metalder counterpart's backstory as an IJA war criminal. For all his evil, he never expressed racist views towards JB or Professor Hart.
  • Big Bad: Ruler of the Virtual Reality, leader of the Virtual Warriors and the main enemy our heroes must face.
  • Composite Character: Though he's directly based on Metalder's God Neros, he takes over Kubilai and Pandora's roles as the main villains from Shaider and Spielban, respectively. Downplayed in that both made appearances in season 2, though (as Oraclon and Desponda respectively).
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Even putting aside the fact that he has an alter-ego as an Evil Overlord, Ziktor himself is shown to engage in a lot of unsavory business practices.
  • Diabolical Mastermind: Runs a MegaCorp in his civilian guise, and secretly lords over an army of monsters from another dimension.
  • Dimension Lord: He effectively rules the Virtual Reality as Grimlord.
  • Evil Is Hammy: As both Ziktor and Grimlord. As Ziktor he's prone to Chewing the Scenery while as Grimlord he's suitably grandiose in his speech.
  • The Heavy: He drives most of the episode plots, often getting an idea on how to destroy the Troopers from something he sees in the real world.
  • Lizard Folk: His upgraded (and US-exclusive) form in season 2 inexplicably gave him a tail and claws — maybe it had something to do with him having a lizard for his Right-Hand Cat.
  • Maker of Monsters: While he leaves most of the monster making to Colonel Icebot and later Oraclon, on a few occasions Grimlord has created monsters on his own after getting fed up with his minions' failures.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: As Karl Ziktor, he bears a resemblance to Gordon Gekko or any number of that era's real-life corporate raiders.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Sits in his throne and lets his minions do most of the fighting. When Ryan confronts him in the "Quest for Power" four-parter, Grimlord attacks him by firing beams at him, but never once stands up to actually do some fighting. (God Neros was a Dark Lord on Life Support, but here there's no real explanation.)
  • Oddly Small Organization: For a MegaCorp, Ziktor Industries seems to be mostly comprised of Karl Ziktor himself, and the few employees we do see beside him are all Skugs in disguise.
  • Orcus on His Throne: As Grimlord, he spends most of the first Season 1 sitting on his throne and never fights the troopers. Then again, as a CEO he likely has other responsibilities to deal with. Come Season 2 he finally steps up off his throne and walks around.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes had a tendency to light up red at random points.
  • Sinister Surveillance: He's somehow able to keep an omnipresent tab on the lives of the Troopers in the real world.
  • You Have Failed Me: Once he's gotten the information he needs from Tyler Steele's head to create a new army, he self-destructs the entire Virtual Dungeon, killing most of his minions. Partly in a failed attempt to kill the VR Troopers, but also because he decided his army was too incompetent and wanted to replace them with new, superior ones.

    General Ivar

Voiced by: Mike Reynolds

A torpedo-like robot who serves as the commander of Grimlord's ground and aerial units. He typically resides in the Virtual Air Castle, but occasionally takes to the field in his Ravage Tank.
  • Adaptational Badass: He lacks the Villain Decay his Spielban counterpart Deathzero went through.
  • Butt-Monkey: That said, he's still on the receiving end of several butt-kickings by the Troopers (often by having his Ravage Tank getting rolled off a cliff).
  • Co-Dragons: Shares the role with Decimator in season 1. While Decimator was Grimlord's top enforcer and field combatant, Ivar is Grimlord's chief military commander and top strategist. In season 2 he keeps his position but has Despera, Doom Master and Oraclon to split the Dragon role with.
    • The Dragon: Even so, he comes the closest out of all of Grimlord's top henchmen, being one of his highest-ranked minions and his most recurring one, outlasting all of his competitors in season 1 save Colonel Icebot, though if their ranks are to be believed, Ivar is above Icebot in the chain of command.
  • Mook Lieutenant: Leads the Virtual Army's aerial fighters and ground tanks, in addition to being Grimlord's right hand man.
  • Tank Goodness: Has the Evil Counterpart to the VR Battlecruiser, the Ravage Tank, in his arsenal — like the Battlecruiser, it can split from a tank into a jet and other ground vehicle, albeit it has a large spinning sawblade instead of a drill.
  • The Starscream: One episode saw him plot against Grimlord to usurp him. His attempt is thwarted and he's destroyed, but Grimlord saw him as useful enough that he brought him back.

    Colonel Icebot

Voiced by: Richard Epcar

Grimlord's chief science officer. He resides in the Virtual Air Castle alongside General Ivar and is responsible for creating many of the monsters in Grimlord's army.
  • Adaptational Villainy: His Spielban counterpart Doctor Bio was a good scientist who was forcibly converted into an evil cyborg, while Icebot appears to be evil of his own free will.
  • Co-Dragons: One of Grimlord's key lieutenants, alongside General Ivar, Decimator, Despera and Oraclon.
  • Decomposite Character: His Spielban counterpart's backstory was given to Tyler Steele (hero's dad who got brainwashed into working for the villain), while that period where he was reduced to a brain, eyes and teeth became the one-time "Commander Donaldson".
  • Evil Genius: He's Grimlord's chief science officer and primary monster creator.
  • Maker of Monsters: Many of the monsters in Grimlord's army were created by Colonel Icebot, and Grimlord usually leaves him to do the monster making while he's otherwise busy.
  • Non-Action Guy: He only ever battled the Troopers himself one time; the rest of the time he'd be busy with creating monsters or otherwise being involved in the backend of Grimlord's plans.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Despite being called Icebot he doesn't have any ice or freeze-related abilities. Offscreen material did state he likes the cold and cold places.
  • One-Winged Angel: The one time he took to the field, he mutated into a bizarre looking monster form to battle JB and Kaitlyn. It didn't last.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has a pair of unblinking red eyes.

    Decimator

Voiced by: Michael Sorich

A powerful armored warrior who serves as one of Grimlord's key lieutenants, acting as second-in-command in the Virtual Dungeon.
  • Badass Cape: Wears a shiny cape atop his back.
  • The Brute: He seems to be Grimlord's strongest warrior, and tends to be called upon when physical force is needed, even besting Ryan Steele in their first encounter (albeit while Ryan was still inexperienced).
  • The Dragon: Served as Grimlord's top enforcer and bodyguard, as well as occasionally acting as a field commander for the Virtual Warriors. He splits it with several Co-Dragons, but in Season 1 Decimator is the most prominent.
  • Demoted to Extra: Downplayed. His Metalder counterpart Coolgin was the clear-cut Dragon of God Neros' four Victorious Saints, while Decimator shares his role with several others.
  • Killed Off for Real: After the Virtual Dungeon is destroyed, Decimator gets brought back one last time to square against Ryan Steele, only to be killed again for good.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Decimator isn't exactly a pretty name.
  • Spell My Name with a "The": Was called "The Decimator" in the Kenner toyline.

    Zelton

Voiced by: Michael Sorich

A robotic warrior and another key lieutenant of Grimlord's, acting as third-in-command of the Virtual Dungeon behind Decimator.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Episode 46 of Season 1 saw him absorbing the powers of Grimlord's other robot warriors for a one-on-one match against Ryan Steele.
  • Co-Dragons: He's one of several who has a claim to being Grimlord's top lieutenant. Specifically, he's Number Three in the hierarchy of the Virtual Dungeon and seemed to act as the leader for many of the Virtual Army's robot warriors. Despite this he's nowhere near as prominent as General Ivar or Colonel Icebot and isn't brought back after the Virtual Dungeon is destroyed.
  • Killer Robot: Is one of the leading robot warriors in the army.
  • Noble Top Enforcer: Has a sense of honor unlike his boss, and salutes Ryan for his fighting ability after he beats him in a very close match, even giving him a clue as to where his father is.

    Air Stryker

Voiced by: Dave Mallow

Grimlord's aerial reconnaissance officer. Tended to spy on the VR Troopers Once an Episode only to get blown away.

    Oraclon

Voiced by:

An oracle of data and information who becomes part of Grimlord's new forces in season 2, following the destruction of the Virtual Dungeon and creation of the Virtual Dark Fortress. He's usually confined to the back wall of of Dark Fortress' command chamber, though if need be he can detach himself.
  • Co-Dragons: Becomes one of Grimlord's top henchmen in season 2. While he splits it with several others, he's otherwise one of Grimlord's most important minions.
  • Decomposite Character: Aside from Grimlord fulfilling Kubilai's Big Bad role, the Hydrabot was Kubilai's original body in Shaider.
  • Demoted to Extra: His counterpart Great Emperor Kubilai was the Big Bad of Shaider, while Oraclon himself is one of several Co-Dragons.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: Is a key member of Grimlord's forces, with his importance possibly exceeding Grimlord himself. He has limitless data on Virtual Reality at his disposal, can produce Ultra Skugs and new Virtual Warriors by himself, and when necessary is capable of detaching from the wall of the Virtual Dark Fortress to fight the Troopers.
  • Evil Genius: Has a wealth of information on the Virtual Reality, and is capable of creating new Virtual Warriors on his own.
  • Maker of Monsters: Among his abilities is the power to create new Virtual Warriors, producing them in an egg he spits out his mouth.
  • Villains Want Mercy: Downplayed, he never begs Ryan for his life, but when Ryan discovers his weak spot (namely, his giant third eye) he yells out "no, stay away!" in a tone that sounds far more pleading than defiant.

    Despera

Portrayed by: Kristin Norton

Another new member of Grimlord's army who appeared following the creation of the Virtual Dark Fortress. She acts as Grimlord's advisor and assistant.
  • Large Ham: In contrast to Grimlord's more sober season one generals, she's very expressive and likes to chew scenery.
  • Light Is Not Good: Wears white robes with a sparkly golden headdress, but is an evil sorceress in service to Grimlord.
  • M Agic Staff: Carries a giant ornamental staff, which she could use to blast the Troopers with lightning, etc.
  • She's a Man in Japan: Despera's Shaider counterpart, Priest Poe, was an effeminate, cross-dressing male, while she is clearly female.
  • The Strategist: Often offers advice and strategies to Grimlord on how to deal with the VR Troopers.

    Doom Master

Portrayed by: TJ Storm

The Virtual Army's special forces commander and another new villain who joins Grimlord's army in season 2.
  • Black Knight: Wears dark armor, wields a massive sword and is a warrior working for the villains.
  • Evil Brit: Downplayed, the actor isn't British but his outfit seems to be patterned after the British Royal Guard uniform.
  • Large Ham: A bit less than Despera, but still enjoys munching on the scenery.
  • The Brute: Doom Master is a powerful warrior who often gets sent out to hassle the Troopers personally.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: His suit is mainly black with red highlights.
    The Vixens
An all-female team of elite kunoichi-esque warriors commanded by Doom Master.

    Desponda

Portrayed by:

Despera's sister, who appears for an episode to help Grimlord defeat the VR Troopers.
  • Demoted to Extra: Her Spielban counterpart Queen Pandora was the Big Bad, while Desponda is a one-episode villain.
  • Humiliation Conga: Defeated by the VR Troopers but survived and escaped, only to see her plan B fail and for Grimlord to fire her from his services after his Air Castle was destroyed.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Was never mentioned before her debut despite being Despera's sister. (It's even weirder considering Despera was technically Grimlord's creation...)

    Knighttime

Portrayed by: Paul Brewster

Voiced by: Wendee Lee

A friend of Grimlord's who hails from a separate dimension beyond the Virtual Reality.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Male actor, female voice actor, and androgynous appearance. Other characters use male pronouns to describe them.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Attempts to usurp Grimlord using Conatron, only for his mutiny to be put to a stop by General Ivar's Fanbot, and Knighttime himself to be taken captive by Grimlord to be used as a power source for his armies.
  • The Starscream: His attempt to freeze our reality (without Grimlord's permission) leads to him clashing with Grimlord, and eventually trying to overthrow him.

    Skugs
The robotic grunts of Grimlord's army, capable of disguising themselves as humans to spy on the Troopers in the real world. They also pilot Grimlord's tanks.
  • Adaptational Wimp: While the Kinclons from Spielban could be easily killed and were often prone to comedic moments, they lacked the Weaksauce Weakness of the Skugs.
  • Composite Character: The footage of the Ultra Skugs comes from a separate group of Mooks from an entirely different series, the Miraclers from Shaider.
    • The rarely-seen Mutant Skugs were the Shadow Light Fighters from Metalder.
  • Elite Mooks: The Mutant Skugs, who are slightly stronger than regular ones. The regular Skugs later get upgraded into a more elite variant in the form of the Ultra Skugs.
  • Mauve Shirt: A few Skugs have more prominent roles in their human personas, such as Grimlord's secretaries or his Mad Scientist Strickland.
  • Mooks: Grimlord's lowly grunt force.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Are destroyed if two of them touch.
