Tally Youngblood

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7190a5bb_5f02_4ca1_80bd_f14cbe19ae68_1.jpeg

Otherwise called "Squint", Tally is the protagonist, who decides to break away from the rules and her assignment

  • Action Survivor: In Uglies Part 1 and Part 2, particularly sneaking over to New Pretty Town to see Peris, traveling across the wild by herself and managing to survive almost being killed by the Rangers' fire cannon.
  • Action Girl: Becomes this in part 3 of Uglies, after she saves The Smoke with just her tricks and a hoverboard.
  • Aesop Amnesia: In Pretties and Specials, Tally has been brainwashed and must relearn the lesson she learned in Uglies.
  • Animated Tattoo: In Pretties, Tally gets one of these on her face. It spins to her heartbeat. She keeps it for the rest of the series and even gets more of them in Specials, that cover her face, arms, and hands. They look like black spirals.
  • Anti-Hero: Tally becomes this in Pretties.
  • Anti-Villain: In Uglies, when she is The Mole until she destroys the locket and in Specials until she is able rewire her mind.
  • The Atoner: She agrees to turn Pretty so that she can test the cure in an attempt to atone for accidentally betraying the Smoke.
  • Audience Surrogate: This is a big part of Tally's character in the first half of Uglies, as we learn about this future world. But as the book goes on she begins to grow out of this.
  • Badass Adorable: Shay's Story reveals that Tally is this as an ugly and she was this as a pretty until she started to starve herself.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis: Her personality is turned inside out as she starts the series as an Ordinary High-School Student, Plucky Girl, Unwitting Pawn, Girl Next Door with Beware the Nice Ones tendencies and by the end of the quartet she has become a combination of the Action Girl, Famed In-Story, Jerk with a Heart of Gold, Manipulative Bitch, Good Is Not Nice, and Broken Bird tropes. Even more fascinating is that she starts the series as an Anti-Villain(Dr. Cable tricks her into unwittingly helping the bad guys)and ends the series as an Anti-Hero(She saves the world and threatens to hurt anyone who tries to destroy it again).
  • Becoming the Mask: Tally slowly begins to love the Smoke and decides to make it her new home and not tell Dr. Cable its location.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: A huge part of Tally’s character in the first two books, in the third and fourth she becomes more of a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: How Shay sees Tally when the Smoke is destroyed in Shay's Story.
  • Blithe Spirit: Tally is this when she goes to the Smoke, New Pretty Town, Andrew's Village, Special Circumstances, and Diego.
  • Blood Knight: Once she turns Special. In fact, all of the Cutters qualify but since Tally isn’t cured she still retains this trait somewhat.
  • Brainless Beauty: Part 1 of Pretties.
  • Brats with Slingshots: In Pretties, Tally mentions that she was really good with slingshots as a Littlie.
  • Breakthe Cutie: Tally slowly gets more and more broken.
  • Broken Bird: After Zane dies in Specials.
  • The Chosen One: Slowly becomes this. While she starts out as The Mole, David starts to like Tally and she is the only Smokey he trusts enough to tell the truth about what the operation does to your brain. Later in Pretties, it is revealed that she can rewire her brain and is able to reverse the Mind Control she's been put through by sheer willpower. Tally is the only one shown to do this and it leads to the cure for the Pretty lesions. Finally she the only Special in the entire world not to be cured and so she still has her superpowers and vows to use them to save the world if it ever needs it.
  • Beautiful All Along: In Uglies when David calls her beautiful even though Tally has trouble believing him at first when he kisses her to prove it,Tally falls in love with him.
  • Betty and Veronica Switch:Tally implies that before the series began, she was the Betty Peris was the Archie and his crushes were Veronicas. However, Tally eventually got over Peris. In Uglies, Tally is a Betty who turns into a Veronica in the last third while David is the Archie and Shay is a Veronica who turns into a Betty in the last third. In the beginning of Pretties, Tally is the Veronica to Helen’s Betty and to Zane’s Archie until Zane dumps Helen. For the rest of Pretties and most of Specials, Tally is an Archie choosing between Zane(Veronica) and David(Betty).
  • Birds of a Feather: Tally and Zane.
  • City Mouse: When she first joins the Smoke.
  • Childhood Friends: With Peris.
  • Corrupt the Cutie: Mostly in Specials.
  • Damsel out of Distress: In her dream, Princess Tally decides to quit waiting for a prince to rescue her and breaks herself out of her tower prison.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Tally can't stand Spagbol.
  • Dogged Nice Girl: Tally implies this with Peris as a Littlie and an Ugly, when she says that he always liked “other girls.” This still seems to be the case when Tally visits him in New Pretty Town for the first time, however, soon after that Tally quickly moves on.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: In Shay’s Story Tally wears a headband throughout the graphic novel until she betrays the Smoke and the Specials arrive at which point the headband comes off. Also, Tally is shown with shoulder length hair in Shay’s Story as an Ugly. In Cutters, once she turns Pretty, she lets her hair grow out slowly until it reaches her waist.
  • Facial Markings: In Pretties and onward.
  • Free-Range Children: Tally mentions that she was very independent as a Littlie. Considering that her parents were Adults Are Useless, this trope is implied.
  • Girl in the Tower: In her dreams in Pretties.
  • God Guise: In Part 3 of Pretties, when she stumbles into the Rusty Village.
  • Good Is Not Nice: In Specials and onward.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: In Extras.
  • Her Heart Will Go On: It's implied in Extras, with David.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: In Pretties, Part 1.
  • The Hero: The moment that David tells her the truth about the Pretty operation, Tally agrees help him put a stop to it and that is where we first see Tally fully commit to the Smoke and go from being an Unwitting Pawn to The Hero.
  • Kidnapped by the Call: Tally is forced to betray Shay.
  • I Just Want to Be Beautiful: Tally for Part 1 and Part 2 of Uglies.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: In Part 2 of Pretties, Tally and Zane are on a mission to escape New Pretty Town and find the Smoke and tell them that the cure was a success.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Along with I Just Want to Be Beautiful, in this world it's pretty much the same thing.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Ironically, despite resisting it she comes like being a Special and doesn't want to give it up.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: When Uglies begins, Tally is sad because her best friend Peris has turned Pretty. She grows out of this in Pretties. She becomes popular from then on and as such becomes far less lonely.
  • In-Series Nickname: Several including: Squint, Skinny, Tally-Wa, Young Blood, and Tally-Sama.
  • Keeping the Handicap: She keep her cutting scars for the memories they provoke, even though medical technology in that future allows scars, skin and eye colour and even facial structure to be changed.
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: Implied in Uglies. Tally not only vividly compares the summer sky to cat vomit, but she also had a morphos of her as a cat woman even though she knew the city would never give her that kind of operation.
  • Legendary in the Sequel: By the fourth book, Extras, Tally's heroics have acquired her a cult of followers.
  • Loved by All: In Extras, Tally has become this after saving the world.
  • Magnetic Hero: Very much so despite all of her flaws. This is something that she has in common with Shay and is part of Tally’s personality that she has had since the beginning and maintains despite multiple surgeries.
  • Meaningful Name: Youngblood is a portmanteau of Young Turks(a political upset) and Fresh Blood(a newcomer). This was very intentional accord to Word of God.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Remembers how she was this when she first came to Uglyville, it happens when she joins the Smoke, when she lives in New Pretty Town, when she joins the Crims, when she comes to Andrew Simpson Smith's village, when she joins Special Circumstances, and when she goes to Diego and Yokohama.
  • Paint It Black: When she turns Special, her hair goes from brown to black.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Only a little in Uglies, such as the distraction she comes up with for the Specials so she can sneak into the building, but much more overtly in Pretties, including using her fame among the Pretties to hijack a hot-air balloon and pretending to be a clueless pretty before threatening a doctor with her knife and stealing his hovercar.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: She is the Blue to Shay's Red.Until Part 3 of Specials from that point on Tally becomes the Red to Shay's Blue.
  • Refusal of the Call: When Shay asks her Tally refuses to go to the Smoke.

Shay

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/6a700f3d_2885_4fcb_ba23_b21fcda9864f_5.jpeg
Nicknamed "Skinny", Shay is Tally's new friend when she first moves to Uglyville
  • Animated Tattoo: Has one of snakes on her face in Pretties and in
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: In Uglies
  • Betty and Veronica Switch: In Shay’s Story, She goes from being an Archie in one love triangle having to choose between David(Veronica) and Zane(Betty)to being a Betty in another one with Zane(Archie) choosing Helen(Veronica) over her. Shay starts Uglies as a Veronica, but turns into a Betty in the last third. In Pretties, she gets to be the Archie again choosing between Zane(Betty) and Tachs(Veronica).
  • Blithe Spirit: Shay changes Tally's life when they first become friends and Tally would've never saved the world and became a hero if it wasn't for Shay.
  • Blood Knight: In Specials.
  • Brainless Beauty:In Part 3 of Uglies.
  • Break the Haughty: Shay's Story reveals this happened to Shay in Uglies, David, Croy, and many others were suspicious of Tally and upset that Shay disobeyed the rules and gave an outsider a map to the Smoke but Shay didn't listen to their concerns and kept trying to get David to accept Tally, but this unbeknownst to Shay led him to fall in love with Tally. Later, when the Specials come Dr. Cable mocks Shay by saying that if she never gave Tally the map none of this would have happened.
  • Brought Down to Normal: In Part 3 of Specials. While she loved being Special, Shay is actually thankful to be back to normal.
  • Deuteragonist: Scott Westerfeld thinks of Shay as Tally's Sidekick. Shay is One of the few characters who appears in all four books and isn't Out of Focus for any of them.
  • Expository Hair Style Change: In Shay’s Story, Shay has hair down to her waist as an Ugly. In Cutters, once she turns Pretty, she cuts it down to her chin and lets it grow down to her shoulders.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Through no fault of her own, has thisin each book. Starts out on the good side, gets forcibly changed into a Pretty, which leads to her cutting herself to regain her brainpower after learning Tally gave the cure to Zane instead of to her (Pretties). Then she gets changed into a Special, which puts her on the Face side, and then is forcibly given the cure in Specials before rescuing Tally in Diego.
  • Heel–Face Turn: When she is cured of her specialness by Fausto.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: In Pretties, Part 2. In fact, Cutters reveals that she was drinking when she had her argument with Tally.
  • Hero of Another Story: Even though Shay has a lot of Character Development and has an important role in every book, we still don't see all of the time and there is a lot that Shay goes through that Tally doesn't know about. Shay's Story is Uglies retold from Shay's POV and Cutters is Pretties from her POV and we can see that Shay is having just as much adventure and action as Tally.
  • I Just Want to Be Beautiful: Before she met David as an ugly.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: In Uglies/Shay's Story she likes how real the Smoke and how they are actually doing something besides partying and being pretty.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: It's why she ran away in Uglies and escaped New Pretty Town in Pretties a few days after Tally.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends:While Tally seems to outgrow this in Pretties, Shay had friends in Uglies and she slowly looses them in Pretties and she becomes somewhat lonely. Part of the reason why she wanted Tally to be Special with her.
  • In-Series Nickname: Skinny, Squint, Shay-la, Boss, and Shay-sama
  • Jumped at the Call: The second time that Shay gets a chance to go to the Smoke she can't wait.
  • The Leader: Of the Cutters in Pretties and in Specials.
  • Magnetic Hero: Another similarity to Tally.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: Like Tally, while it’s a little less clear if this applies to David since they wind up breaking up, it’s played straight with Tachs when she saves his life in Shay’s Story.
  • Mirror Character: With Tally. Although they are very different personality-wise they are also quite similar in terms of their roles in the story, even a lot of their tropes are either the same or extremely similar.
  • Rebellious Spirit: "I can't think of anything worse than being required to have fun."
  • Refusal of the Call: Albeit reluctantly, David talks her out of going the first time.
  • Rescue Romance: With Tachs. Shay rescues him in Shay’s Story and they date in Cutters.
  • Rich Bitch: Shay gives off this vibe in Uglies after she has been turned Pretty and is rescued by Tally.
  • The Rival: To Tally at certain parts of the story.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Shay is described as being tall.
  • That Woman Is Dead: Just like Tally.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: In Cutters, Shay's dream has Ranger Shay (Tomboy) and Princess Tally (Girly Girl).
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Similarly to Tally.
  • The Trickster: A tricky ugly and a tricky pretty.
  • Start of Darkness: It appears that Tally betraying her in Uglies was this for her. Shay eventually overcomes this.
  • Super-Soldier: In Specials.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Once she is no longer Special, Shay apologizes to Tally, admitting that forcing Tally to become Special was a bad idea.
  • Must Have Caffeine: In Pretties, Part 1 to keep herself bubbly.
  • Oblivious to Love: In Shay's Story, she didn't know that Zane had a crush on her when they were uglies. By the time Shay visits him in New Pretty Town and realizes that he used to like her, she meets his pretty girlfriend, Helen and realizes that he is over her. Tachs had a crush on her too, but didn't tell her until they were both pretties, but Shay seems pleasantly surprised and they start dating.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: Gets called out on this by Tachs in Cutters.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Starting the Cutters.

Peris

A friend of Tally who once went by "Nose"
  • Childhood Friend: To Tally, who knew him when they were kids before he had the operation to become a Pretty.
  • Death of Personality: He wasn't the same after his surgery to become a "pretty" and, as Tally remembers, he used to make fun of the Pretties and how they do things but he hadn't "waited a moment to join in the fun".
  • Gag Nose: Implied when he was ugly as it was his nickname.
  • Morality Pet: Played with. At first, Tally would sneak into the Pretty town to see him (meeting Shay along the way)and, later, she only agreed to help Special Circumstances because Peris specifically asked her to, telling her they can be pretty together.
  • Refusal of the Call: In Pretties, when Tally tries to get him to leave the city with her.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: Tally thinks so when he is made pretty.

Dr.Cable

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dr_cable.jpeg
Dr. Cable is the head of Special Circumstances
  • A Day in the Limelight: She narrates a few chapters in Shay's Story and ''Cutters.
  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: In Specials
  • Big Bad: She's in charge of Special Circumstances, which is responsible for much of trouble in the series
  • Brought Down to Normal: Eventually
  • Consummate Liar
  • Evil Counterpart: One for Tally. They are both smart(Tally is a nerd and Dr.Cable is a doctor), sarcastic, natural leaders with manipulative tendencies.
  • Morally Ambiguous Doctorate: She's head of a company that specializes in plastic surgery to make everyone "pretty" for utopian means but her ethics aren't something you'd like to see.
  • Kill the Cutie: Her goal for Tally In Specials after Tally has outlived her usefulness.
  • Rapid Aging: Once cured, she shows her true age as a crumbly.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: She appears as a dragon in Tally's dream in Pretties.
  • Shadow Archetype: With Tally. Tally becomes increasing manipulative throughout the books and while she's not at Dr. Cable's level she is the only character tricky enough to defeat Dr. Cable. Also Dr. Cable used her Special Army to control everything. Now that Tally is the last Special in the world she could become as corrupt as Dr. Cable is she's not careful.
  • Smug Snake
  • Take Over the World: Her goal at the end of Specials is revealed to be this. This was foreshadowed in Uglies when Tally rescues Shay and Shay mentions this. However, it isn’t until Dr. Cable has Tally trapped in Specials that she reveals that this was her master plan the entire time.
  • The Trickster: Was a tricky ugly.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: If her claims that she used to be just like Tally are true, then this trope applies.
  • Villainous Breakdown: In Specials, when Tally cures her.
  • Villain Has a Point: In Pretties, she tells tells Tally that the reason why the Rusties died out was because they were wasting the resources they had and polluting the earth, though the fuel crisis was a part of it. The Smoke threatened to do that as well by building fires, cutting down trees for rabbit hutches, and other activities that could destroy the planet on a large scale. Tally thinks that Dr. Cable is merely trying to test if she's gotten cured but later on takes these points to heart, and decides with David to monitor the world so that history doesn't repeat.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She's this of the "Problem is the Consequences" variety, because the brainwashing to keep people from becoming as destructive as the the Rusties were but it went wrong. She tries to convince Tally her intentions are good in Pretties but the latter doesn't buy it.

David

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/david.jpeg

Son of the Smoke's founder, David is another outsider

  • A Day in the Limelight: The short story, How David Got His Scar is told from his POV and takes place before Shay got to the Smoke.
  • Badass
  • Bears Are Bad News: One gave him his scar.
  • Betty and Veronica Goes from being the Veronica with Shay as the Archie and Zane as the Betty in Shay’s Story to being an Archie in Uglies with Shay being a Veronica who turns into a Betty at the end and Tally being a Betty who turns into a Veronica at the end then he becomes a Betty in Pretties and Specials with Tally as the Archie and Zane as the Veronica.
  • The Big Guy: He's one of the tallest characters in the Smoke
  • Country Mouse: In Uglies Part 3, David has trouble adjusting to the city and in Extras, Tally
  • First Love: For Tally
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: In Specials
  • Out of Focus: He is barely in Pretties
  • Nice Guy: One of the nicest characters in the series. One of his reasons for wanting to be bring others to the Smoke is because he wanted to show the other Uglies that they don't have to change.
  • Prince Charming: He is this in Tally and Shay’s dream.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: With Shay.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: With Tally in Specials.
