    In General
  • Demon Lords and Archdevils: All of them are held the title of "Demon Lord" and are powerful figures.
  • Fatal Flaw: Their sheer stupidity proves to be their undoing. Granted their pride and lust are bad in of themselves, they never, and if they do rarely, think of the consequences of their own actions. By the end of volume 7, they are all dead.

    Zolgia

Zolgia

Voiced by: Hiroto Kazuki (Japanese), Kyle Hebert (English)

The Demon lord whose responsible for murdering Mio's foster parents, trying to seize the "power of destruction" for himself and kicking off the plot in the process.

  • Ambition Is Evil: All the on-screen evil he committed was purely for the sake of trying to claim the Demon Realm throne for himself.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: He's officially recognized as a Marquis in the Demon world, and he's pretty much as evil as they come.
  • Bad Boss: He has one of two modes towards his underlings: hands-off, leaving them completely to their own devices or controlling each and everything they do, trying to kill them when they fail him or outlive their usefulness as Lars and Zest can testify.
  • Beard of Evil: He has a white beard and he's definitely not a good person.
  • Big Bad: He is the main antagonist for the first three volumes of the series.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: On the receiving end, courtesy of Lars as the latter was simply buying time until his witness arrived.
  • Combo Platter Powers: This guy's got a full house of powers, all easily fatal. He might as well be a Sith Lord.
  • Deal with the Devil: Zolgia attempts to do one with Basara at the end of volume 3, but the latter, understandably, has no intention of agreeing.
  • Depraved Bisexual: He turns his captives into sex slaves, regardless of gender, by forcing them into a Lotus-Eater Machine until their minds are broken into obedience.
  • Didn't See That Coming: He didn't realize that pissing Mio off wouldn't just wake up Wilbert's power, but her own inherent ability.
  • Eye Scream: He loses an eye as Lars is torturing him.
  • Facial Markings: He's got some kind of pattern written on his bald scalp and forehead.
  • Hate Sink: Most of what he did lands him to this, from the way he murders Mio's foster parents, to the destruction of Lars's hometown and to his abuse of Zest.
  • Horned Humanoid: As expected of a demon.
  • It's All About Me: He thinks the world revolves around him, and everybody else is his rightful toy to do with as he pleases.
  • Karmic Death: His murder of Mio's parents, destruction of Lars's hometown, and abuse of Zest as his servant end up causing his death.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Sheria testifies at the start of volume 8 that the death of his wife was his Start of Darkness, as he drowned himself in petty lust and hedonism to stifle the pain, never grieving properly and moving on...
  • Lust: He held the seat of "Lust" on the Demon Council.
  • Mugging the Monster: A pissed off Mio, having been triggered one time too often, off his arm when he reaches out to try and Mind Rape her. That said, Mio wasn't even using her powers to the fullest when this happened.
  • Off with His Head!: Courtesy of Lars.
  • Paid Harem: He's introduced "playing around" with one.
  • Pointed Ears: His ears are so long and pointy, that combined with his beard and horns he looks very much like a humanoid goat.
  • Powers Do the Fighting: Once he uses up his magic fighting Basara, Mio, Maria, and Yuki, he's easy pickings. That's just the way Lars and Basara agreed it would be.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: He doesn't give a damn about consent. Not only does Lars point out that he has a long history of violating women under a succubus attribute pact that belongs to other masters, so he could sit back and enjoy the curse activate to its maximum over the resulting guilt and trauma, but near the end of Volume 3, he reaches out to rip Mio's clothes off, intending to rape her. Unfortunately for him, he doesn't get away with it.
  • Stupid Evil: Granted, he has Mio and Yuki paralyzed in volume 3, but attacking and trying to kill his loyal retainer, Zest, while there are other enemies around, and his stealth barrier is down, and declaring his intent to sexually exploit his captives, just for his sick thrills, is suicidally stupid from a tactical and strategic viewpoint.
  • Suicidal Cosmic Temper Tantrum: Lampshaded. He goes on to boast that his "insurance" is a Kaiju that multiplies endlessly and consumes the world it sits on, and whose vital organ is completely immune to both magical and physical attacks.
  • This Cannot Be!: When Basara's team takes out the Kaiju he was using as "insurance."
  • Too Dumb to Live: Zest has to remind him that Mio has Wilbert's power inside her, and there's no way to predict, prevent, or prepare against it reacting violently to the full-power activation of the pact's curse, that Zolgia fully intended to activate by raping Mio when he had her chained up in his Eldritch Location.
  • Villains Want Mercy: When he realizes that Basara is just there to see him die, rather than someone who has a grudge he can manipulate, he puts forth a lot of proposals to try to make himself and his intel attractive. It doesn't work.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: Not just to Basara and co. He considers Zest "defective" because she actually has empathy and can relate with the thoughts and feelings of others which he makes crystal clear in volume 3.
  • War Is Glorious: The reason he turned on Mio's father in the first place? He doesn't like the truce with the Hero Village because he doesn't get to go on rampages to boost his ego and need for glory.
  • You Have Failed Me: He attempts to kill Zest for the latter's failure in keeping Mio captive, but Basara intervenes.
  • Your Head Asplode: Lars makes his head explode at the conclusion of volume 3.

    Nebra

Nebra

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nebra01.jpg

Voiced by: Seiro Ogino (Japanese), Austin Lee Matthews (English)

One of the top attackers from the Demon Nobles. He was hired by Belphegor to commit genocide in the Demon Realm.

  • Adaptational Wimp: While he only has one "heroic spirit" in Burst, in the original light novel, he had four.
  • Ax-Crazy: He is seriously unhinged.
  • Badass Finger Snap: He snaps his fingers to command his "Heroic Spirit" to fire.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: His sclera are almost solid black, and he's insane.
  • Cavalry Betrayal: To both Basara and Gald. He "teleports" Basara and sends his ash-covered body across the city, slamming into an archway, right in front of Mio, and then blasts Gald to atoms. He does this as Basara starts turning the fight against Gald around.
  • Character Death: He is killed when Belphegor's Master-Servant pact causes him to turn into dust.
  • Dirty Coward: He's completely smug and confident in his victory when he has giant mecha he can hide behind, but when somebody blasts through those mecha, he panics and tries to run. He also sees nothing wrong stabbing an unconscious woman on the ground, but when that woman's boyfriend shows up and starts pounding him, he begs for mercy. It doesn't work.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Even though he is a male demon, he certainly looks like a woman.
  • He Knows Too Much: Killed by Belphegor's master-servant pact to stop him from talking.
  • His Name Is...: Before he can drop his master's name, Nebra gets disintegrated by the Master-servant pact placed upon him.
  • Horned Humanoid: He has horns like most demons.
  • Just Following Orders: How he tries to justify his heinous acts against not only the unarmed civilians of the Moderate faction but Leohart's troops, including Gald. Basara doesn't buy it and spares him just long enough to try and gather information.
  • Lack of Empathy: He doesn't care about anyone but himself.
  • Lighter and Softer: Yes, he benefits from this directly as a character. In Burst, the pact's curse causes him to instantly turn to dust. In the original light novel, he exploded into Ludicrous Gibs with a sickening "pop," causing Basara to jump away, out of due caution that the explosion might be joined by pyrotechnics.
  • Nothing Personal: He taunts Gald "do not think badly of me" before blasting him to atoms.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: He wants to destroy the demon realm just to watch it get obliterated.
  • Pointy Ears: Like most demons not in disguise, he's got pointed ears.
  • Powers Do the Fighting: He mostly relied on the "heroic spirits" to do battle during the attack on Wildart city. When Basara got close enough to attack him directly, he didn't stand a chance.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: He's extremely impulsive and mentally unstable.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Zigzagged. His color scheme is purple, and his "Heroic Spirit" is lampshaded as the most powerful of the lot attacking Wilbert's domain, but he is personally the weakest and most cowardly of the troops leading the attack.
  • Sissy Villain: He's flamboyant, long-haired and has a somewhat feminine appearance.
  • Sore Loser: When Mio blows up his "Heroic Spirit" trump card, he attempts to destroy the city with a bomb, but his plans are foiled.
  • Stupid Evil: Granted, he had orders to kill Mio, and there's always the chance Basara would hunt him down if he took her out of the city, even if she went willingly. The way he handled his mission, however, was truly idiotic. Knowing full well how sacrosanct the Master-servant pact is, and the fact that Mio's in one with Basara being common knowledge, he should have realized that attacking Basara and mocking Mio in the process was not likely to go well for him, and if Mio had just a tiny bit more control and experience with Wilbert's power, he would have litterally gotten squashed like a bug.
  • Taking You with Me: After Mio destroys his trump card, he attempts to destroy the whole city. It doesn't work.
  • Too Dumb to Live: It's not very wise to blow up the demon realm and taunt Basara that soon.
  • Trial by Friendly Fire: He tries to claim this trope is in effect for "accidentally" firing on Gald when blasting Basara to interrupt their fight, in which Basara managed to gain the upper hand. After Gald saw through it, and called him out on it, Nebra dropped all pretense and went for Unfriendly Fire.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He completely loses it when Mio shows up and blows the "Heroic Spirit" he was riding single handed, and then again when Jin stops the self-destruct charge.
  • Villains Want Mercy: He spends his last moments begging for his life. Unfortunately, Belphegor's pact had other ideas.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Has no qualms in hitting a girl, especially Mio.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: His eyes are golden, and he's truly shifty and completely unable to be trusted.
  • You Have Failed Me: Makes a failed attempt to kill Mio and cause genocide in the demon realm, resulting in his death at Belphegor's hands.

    Belphegor

Belphegor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/belphegor01.jpg

Voiced by: Naomi Kusumi (Japanese), Chris Tergliafera (English)

The first Demon Council representative met by the main characters.

  • Adaptational Heroism: Both the manga and anime make him to be far less vile than in the original light novel.
  • The Ageless: He's been around for untold centuries, and it doesn't look like old age would ever have been a cause of death for him.
  • Big Bad: The main antagonist of volumes 4-5 and 7, who serves as the leader of the Demon Council.
  • Balloon Belly: His appearance after he's done feeding.
  • Blood from the Mouth: He coughs up blood after Basara slashes him.
  • Character Death: He is killed by Basara's Banishing Shift after the latter's Relative Button is pushed.
  • Corrupt Politician: As expected for the leader of the corrupt Demon Council, he's the worst of the bunch.
  • Devil in Plain Sight: Quite literally. The primary reason he gets away with being so unpleasant is that his off-screen PR agency has him in such good graces with the general public that any careless accusation or rebuttal could have a riot mounted against his accuser. His death, and the Demon Council unleashing Chaos, brings an end to all that.
  • Emotion Eater: He apparently feeds off of the orgasm from any girl brought into his bed. Sadly, she doesn't survive the experience.
  • Extreme Omnisexual: The light novel specifies that he would happily have sex with anything he could get into Zolgia's VIP room, male, female, young, old, even animals.
  • Fatal Flaw: His lust for women eventually does him in.
  • Gag Penis: The light novel indicates that not only are his nether regions super-naturally large, he has hemi-penises that wrap around each other when he's fully aroused...
  • Gonk: He's clearly not attractive in any way, shape, or form.
  • Groin Attack: In the light novel, Basara's attack on him is spelled out, in graphic detail, starting with severing Belphegor's nether regions, as the demon was intending to rape him.
  • Horned Humanoid: Like most demons, he has horns.
  • I Have Your Wife: In addition to threatening Leohart's own life, he leads the Demon Council into threatening Liala's continued well-being, to ensure Leohart's "good behavior."
  • Kick the Dog: Not only does he threaten Leohart and Liala's lives, but he also taunts Basara about how he will make Mio his Sex Slave. This one ends up being a bad move on his part.
  • Lean and Mean: When he meets Leohart and the main characters in the throne room, he could be mistaken for a light pole, and he's not a nice guy, by any stretch of the imagination. The light novel even describes him having the appearance of a skeleton.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: He's directly responsible for the deaths of Leohart's adoptive parents, whom he dearly loved, and made it look like they died of illness to the general public.
  • Never My Fault: When confronted by Nebra's backstabbing, and the abject failure of the attack on the Moderates faction, both of which came about as a direct result of his own orders, he only gives lip-service to having any actual responsibility by claiming Nebra's death is more than sufficient punishment, and trying for anything more will simply have the public's resentment shift to Leohart instead. The only reason he gets away with such a flimsy train of logic is the I Have Your Wife entry above.
  • Obviously Evil: He doesn't even bother to hide it. His appearance and mannerisms all make it immediately clear.
  • Really Gets Around: His first scene, after the throne room, show him sharing a bed with at least 5 women, all "spent." The dialogue from his attendant indicates this is normal. Not only that, but he asks for more women after the attendant is finished "cleaning up."
  • Refuge in Audacity: His "apology" for Nebra backstabbing Gald during the assault on the Moderates faction is insisting changing the tournament rules from a five vs five team (three of Leohart's people, two of the demon council vs five from the moderates) to a seven vs seven team battle (four of the demon council, three of Leohart's, vs seven of the moderates). Although Leohart immediately sees through Belphegor's intentions, he has no choice but to go along because he has no hard evidence, so he changes the format to one on one battles to prevent the anticipated backstabbing.
  • Saying Too Much: When he gloats about "disciplining" Zolgia's female sex slaves upon meeting Basara's team in Leohart's throne room, purely for the sake of riling up Mio, Zest, and Maria who all suffered at Zolgia's hands, he unwittingly reveals the perfect way to assassinate him. He's too smug and arrogant to notice or care.
  • Smug Snake: After centuries of using copious amounts of Loophole Abuse, and getting his way through threats, intimidation, and hostage-taking, he's come to believe he's completely untouchable and can smooth talk or bludgeon his way through any situation. Basara proves him wrong.
  • Straw Misogynist: He only sees women as food, and that's on a good day.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Really, Belphegor, what were you thinking when you pushed Basara's Relative Button regarding Mio?
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Through the use of numerous disposable pawns, scapegoats, and hefty doses of Plausible Deniability, as well as coasting on his war accomplishments during the Great War 15 in-universe years ago, the general public looks upon him like a saint, at least until his death fully exposed his, and the Demon Council's evil deeds, at which point his good reputation was dead and buried without funeral or tombstone.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: He's a very shifty individual and his eyes are golden.
  • You Have Failed Me: His master-servant pact disintegrates Nebra after the latter is defeated.
  • You Killed My Father: Belphegor killed Liala's parents.

    Admirath

Admirath

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/admirath01jpg.jpg

Voiced by: Keisuke Komoto (Japanese), Landon McDonald (English)

The retainer of Madonis.

  • An Arm and a Leg: At the conclusion of the battle in the Demon Realm, Admirath loses both hands in short order after he tries to murder the unconscious Maria and Kurumi, along with Yuki and Lucia who are watching their recovery. Unfortunately for him, first Maria, then Kurumi both reveal they weren't that unconscious. This also includes a bonus Horned Humanoid version of the trope, as Maria does a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown to Admirath to the point that his forehead horn is snapped off.
  • Animal Motif: A unicorn.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He speaks in polite words, phrases, and tones, but he's doing so to deliver threats in a Shame If Something Happened way.
  • The Fighting Narcissist: He views the tournament fight as nothing more than a show, and Kurumi's efforts as a "dance" admiring his own "beauty" during the whole thing, and he is after Kurumi because he can't stand the thought of letting the "show" go unfinished.
  • Horned Humanoid: He has a single purple horn coming out of his forehead.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: He attempts to slowly kill the unconscious Kurumi and Maria while both of their sisters were forced to watch helplessly. He loses both hands and is punched through a wall by Maria, who then beats the tar out of him]].
  • Oh, Crap!: He is utterly shocked when Kurumi and Maria chop off his arms and when Maria delivers a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on him.
  • Punched Across the Room: At the conclusion of volume 7, he takes a punch from Maria that knocks him not just across the room, but out of the building and several blocks away.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Subverted. He has a purple motif, and a reputation for being a powerful fighter, but he's revealed as not being above cheating and rigging fights beforehand.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: He absolutely shrieks when Maria rips off his arm.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: As he lampshades, Greed. He calls himself "greedy" for wanting to kill Kurumi despite the fact that the council's goals of defeating Kurumi and forfeiting Zest were met.
  • Sinister Scythe: He fights with a scythe.
  • Shame If Something Happened: Prior to the fight with Kurumi, he gives her a button, and says Basara's fate is in her hands.
  • Sissy Villain: Almost as bad as Nebra. He carries himself like a Rich Bitch aristocrat.
  • Smug Snake: He's nowhere near as cunning or creative as he thinks.
  • Villain Ball: Admirath knocked out Maria and Yuki, and decided to target Kurumi who is out of commission. Seriously, what was he thinking?
  • White Hair, Black Heart: He has white hair and is working for the demon council.

    Volga

Volga

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/volga01.jpg

Voiced by: Kenji Nomura (Japanese)

The older brother of Varga.

  • The Brute: Exactly like his brother, all he brings to the table is brute strength. Unfortunately, he grossly overestimates his abilities in the match with Yuki.
  • Curbstomp Battle: He ends up on the receiving end of this during his duel with Yuki.
  • Dead Man Walking: He doesn't realize Yuki's killed him until he's turned to look at her and literally starts falling apart.
  • Death by Irony: He boasts that in one blow, he'd turn Yuki into mincemeat. The reverse is ultimately proven true. What's more, Lars even lampshades that his death in battle is even more pathetic than Varga's, especially considering the fact that Volga was decrying Varga as "worthless" beforehand.
  • Facial Markings: Like his brother, his face is clearly delineated.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: What he's ultimately reduced to after Yuki's done with him.
  • Mask of Power: He magically dons a mask while he's charging at Yuki.
  • Miles Gloriosus: He's a very boastful fighter, but he's utterly pathetic in reality.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Varga's red.
  • Relative Button: He tries to push Yuki's. It doesn't work out so well for him.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He's killed off in the same episode he's introduced.
  • You Killed My Father: Subverted. He asks Yuki if she's the one who killed his brother before their match, but then reveals that he doesn't give a damn about the guy.

    Madonis

Madonis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/madonis01.jpg

Voiced by: Atsuki Tani (Japanese), Brad Venable (English)

One of the council members, and the one judging the matches.

  • Alien Blood: His blood is purple.
  • Corrupt Politician: He's on the council and he's as smarmy as they come.
  • Death by Irony: Liala kills him after his plan to assassinate her brother fails.
  • Dirty Coward: When Basara destroys Chaos, he decides to destroy the whole town to ensure the council's victory. Unfortunately for him and the rest of the demon council, they gets a Karmic Death at the hands of Liala.
  • Fatal Flaw: His resentment of Leohart and committing attempted genocide in the demon realm end up doing him in.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: His plans to wipe out the demon realm and Leohart backfire on him big time.
  • Horned Humanoid: He's got horns, like most demons.
  • Karmic Death: He is killed by the sister of the same demon lord they abused and attempted to have killed.
  • Lack of Empathy: Like the rest of the council, he doesn't care about anyone but himself.
  • A Million Is a Statistic: He leads the council in wiping out his own people "as a test of war potential" with his use of Chaos.
  • Off with His Head!: Courtesy of Liala.
  • Rules Lawyer: He uses the tournament rules to force a disqualification on Zest for stopping Admirath from killing Kurumi, whom he'd already defeated.
  • Senior Creep: He's got the appearance of an old man, and he's very creepy.
  • Seven Deadly Sins: He holds the seat of "Greed" on the Demon Council.
  • Shoot the Messenger: He shoots the messenger who comes to tell him about Chaos's threat to burn the demon world to the ground because the messenger pleads with him to reconsider leaving the creature "active."
  • Too Dumb to Live: He and the rest of the council unleash Chaos into the Demon Realm and start a genocide. They were only asking for trouble.
  • We Have Reserves: Like the rest of the demon council, he doesn't care one whit about how many soldiers die as long as the Council's goals are met, or at least advanced.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: He's got yellow eyes, and he's very corrupt.

    Chaos

Chaos

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chaos01.jpg

The "trump card" of the Demon Council.

  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: He commands the "Heroic Spirits" and is the most powerful.
  • The Berserker: He attacks indiscriminately.
  • Blank White Eyes: He has no pupils or irises. His eyes are solid white.
  • Breath Weapon: He shoots beams of light from his mouth.
  • Character Death: He is killed by Basara's Banishing Shift in the finale of volume 7.
  • Combat Tentacles: He can manipulate his purple tentacles to slam, constrict, or blast his enemies.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: In the original light novels, Basara kills him with his Banishing Shift. The anime version has Mio use her Unrealistic Black Hole to kill him for good.
  • Equivalent Exchange: Summoning Chaos requires marking individuals as living sacrifices for him to consume. He will not stop his rampage until either he succeeds or is destroyed. The anime does not explain how Leohart knows this, although it is often mentioned that Leohart was thoroughly investigating the ruins he came from.
  • Fog Feet: He has no legs, but still stands just fine.
  • Light Is Not Good: He attacks with light, but there's nothing good about him.
  • Monster Progenitor: He summons "Heroic Spirits" endlessly.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: He has six arms, and those arms wield two two-handed swords, and two mandala-like weapons.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: He's called "the ultimate 'heroic spirit'" and the lesser ones deployed by Gald and Nebra were able to level buildings or blow up cities when pressed.
  • Purple Is Powerful: He's powerful and covered in purple.
  • Scary Teeth: He has teeth that are sharp and very pointy.
  • The Voiceless: He has no dialogue since he is a monster.
