Introduced in The Hitman's Bodyguard

    Michael Bryce
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/thehitmanswifesbodyguardmichaelbryce.png
"I'M UNLICENSED! AND I DON'T GIVE A FUCK!"
Played by: Ryan Reynolds
"Do you know what happens when a Triple-A rated executive protection agent loses a client? Triple-A. I was up here, yeah?"

A former "triple A" protection agent ordered to escort Kincaid.

  • Adult Adoptee: At the end of the second film, he signs what he thinks are forms that will grant him his license back, only to find that Sonia had him sign adoption papers.
Bryce and Kincaid: Wait, WHAT THE FUCK?!
  • Badass Biker: He drives a black Ducati in Amsterdam while following Darius and later uses it in a chase to protect him from Dukhovich’s men.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Upon arriving in the Amsterdam, he puts a nice grey suit with a black tie for the Hague trial. It gets messed up due to fighting Dukhovich's mooks on the way to the court.
  • Badass Longcoat: He wears a black peacoat for the first half of the movie until he gets to Amsterdam.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Near the end of the movie, he manages to rescue Amelia from Foucher despite being heavily wounded.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Darius really doesn't need his help in fighting hordes of mooks, but Bryce does help in making sure that his impulsive behavior doesn't get him killed.
  • Boring, but Practical: A firm believer in the trope, preferring to plan things out, land quick blows and knock an opponent flat rather than go in guns blazing. His agency even had it as their motto: "Boring is always best".
  • Butt-Monkey: He undergoes a lot of abuse through both films. Just to summarize, he loses his Triple-AAA bodyguarding job, puts up with Darius' shenanigans, gets electrically tortured, takes many hits from Dukhovich's men, has his sabbatical interrupted by Darius' wife Sonia, takes more hits from Aristotle's men, finds out that his seemingly loving stepfather doesn't give a shit about him, and finally, unknowingly becomes Darius' and Sonia's legally adopted son.
  • Conscience Makes You Go Back: After discovering that Kincaid was the reason why Mr. Kurosawa got shot, costing Bryce his career, he abandons Darius, leaving him to arrive to The Hague by himself, and goes to an outside bar to go rant about Darius to the bartender. However, when Dukhovich's men ambush Darius, Bryce (begrudgingly) goes to save him.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Deconstructed; his goal is to make every protection job go completely flawless with little to no violent interactions and with client completely safe and sound. What he fails to realize is that a client won't always listen to his plans (such as Darius) and that life is ultimately unpredictable, for example, you never know when there's going to be a hitman several miles away with a sniper rifle put a bullet hole in your perfectly laid plans.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Not afraid to raise complaints about his clients.
  • How the Mighty Have Fallen: He goes from having his own protection agency, a nice house, an armory of fancy weapons, nice watches, slick suits, and a fleet of Jaguars at his disposal to being forced to live in a tiny Ford C-Max (which has seen better days) and take crappy jobs with clients who are less wealthy and unstable.
  • Humble Pie: Encouraged by Darius to make amends with Amelia, he calls her on the day of the trial, saying that he forgives her for what ended up ruining his life. However, after nearly getting tortured to death, he calls back and apologizes for being such an asshole. Amelia is unmoved by both calls. Though it's implied that the second one was in case if it was his last chance to tell her anyway while he's still alive.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: He goes through a lot of pain in the films but always makes it through.
  • It's All About Me: He cares a lot about his career, and when it went down in flames due to one client's death, he took out his rage out on his INTERPOL agent girlfriend, blaming her for what happened and only taking the Kincaid job in promise that she would help him get back to his glamorous life.
  • Last-Name Basis: Is mainly referred to his surname, even by his stepfather.
  • One-Man Army: One of his first scenes has him taking on a hallway full of assassins targeting Mr. Seifert using only his fists and beating them without breaking a sweat.
  • Only in It for the Money: Darius infers that Bryce grew up wanting to work in as a cop, but eventually realized that he wouldn't get paid well, so, he went on to get special ops training and formed his own protection agency.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Darius' red; he prefers to carefully plan out protection details avoid unnecessary violence and use Boring, but Practical methods to ensure his clients’ safety.
  • Slobs vs. Snobs: The snob; He’s obsessed with forming a perfect plan almost to the point of OCD and prefers less messy methods of getting out of a jam in contrast to Darius’ approach of just going in head-on and killing everyone.
  • Supporting Protagonist: Although he's part of the Protagonist Title, he's mainly just a bodyguard, and it's mostly up to Kincaid to take down the villains and the Big Bad.
  • Taking the Bullet: Discussed; he and Darius talk whether Bryce would ever be willing to get shot in order to save his client's life with Darius saying that if he's paying for "triple A" service, he’d want the guy protecting him to do so, while Bryce counters by saying that his perfectly laid plans are to ensure that he won't have to get shot at all. Near the end of the film, Bryce does end up jumping in front of Darius to save the latter from getting shot by Dukhovich.
  • Thou Shall Not Kill: Zig-zagged; He can and is willing to kill people, especially when the safety of a client is at stake, but prefers to just beat the crap out of them in order to draw less unwanted attention and because it's less messy.

    Darius Kincaid
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/thehitmanswifesbodyguarddariuskincaid.png
"I am harm's way."
"I got no money in the bank, Interpol's always in my ass and I'm a hit man shooting blanks."

A notorious incarcerated hitman sent to testify at the Hague against President Dukhovich.

  • Abusive Parents: After his parents separated, his mother married a man by the name of "Kincaid" (Darius' original last name was Evans) who would beat him constantly with his belt.
  • Affably Evil: A hitman with a very cheery disposition.
  • Amazon Chaser: He adores his brash, foul-mouthed, combat-capable wife.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: His gung-ho, "run in and kill everyone" methods usually cause more trouble for him, even if it allows him to survive.
  • Badass Driver: As shown in the chase with Dukhovich's mooks in Amsterdam.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He dresses in a nice, dark blue suit in the film's third act. He also had a light blue waistcoat, but he removes it offscreen before saving Bryce from getting tortured.
  • Cold Sniper: Two flashbacks depict him trying to snipe Bryce and Mr. Kurosawa.
  • Contrived Coincidence: He was on another job when he spotted Mr. Kurosawa and decided to take out his bounty.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He dresses primarily in black or dark clothing and is a wanted hitman with nearly 300 kills to his name. However, he has high moral standards (only going after really bad people) and is a genuinely affable person outside of work.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He loves his wife more than life itself, and is willing to give up his freedom for her.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Turned on Dukhovich when he ordered the massacre of a village (with Dukhovich participating in the carnage).
  • Fatal Flaw: His impulsiveness. In the past, he got arrested when he received a call that his wife was hospitalized, never thinking that it could be a trap and in the present, he constantly puts himself into danger by making foolish mistakes, like shooting everyone he sees instead of letting Bryce take them out silently, picking up a cell phone from a fallen mook, unaware that it could be tracked, or nearly getting ambushed when went to do a public display of affection for Sonia.
  • Handicapped Badass: Spends most of the film with an injured foot/leg and barely slows down.
  • Happily Married: He and Sonia have the most passionate, devoted relationship you'll ever see.
  • Hitman with a Heart: Darius is a hitman with a strong code of honor based around Never Hurt an Innocent.
  • The Hyena: He is a jovial motherfucker, laughing about the slightest shit, whether it be about his own capture, his and Bryce ride blowing up, or when Dukhovich tries to break him with a "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: In the sequel. Sonia makes a show of being angry and dumping him in front of the Aristotle. Though clearly upset, Darius later tells Bryce that he accepts it if Aristotle can give Sonia the lifestyle she wants. Luckily, it was all a ploy and Sonia never planned on leaving him.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: When faced with multiple mooks, he tends to attempt to kill them all, instead of escaping or being stealthy about it.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: He got arrested when INTERPOL agents tricked him into heading down to Mexico, under the guise that his wife got in a car accident. Later, he goes to place flowers on the top of a clock tower outside of Sonia's prison cell, attracting the attention of numerous INTERPOL agents and mercenaries.
  • Mundane Utility: After a brief car crash, he uses a suppressed Beretta pistol to deflate the airbags, despite Bryce offering to use his Swiss Army knife instead.
  • One-Man Army: A highly capable Professional Killer who can face teams of armed gunmen and come out no worse for wear. For example, when the Interpol escort is ambushed, Darius gets ahold of a gun and clears the block in less than a minute.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: He considers himself a good guy despite being a hitman because he goes after people who deserve it, like Dukhovich and Aristotle.
  • Pet the Dog: After hearing that Sonia might have been injured, he stopped drowning a target in Geneva and gave him "a pass" due to what came up.
  • Professional Killer: Given that he's the titular hitman, this goes without saying.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Bryce's blue; he's more violent and emotional, joking around and talking about love, in contrast to Bryce's uptight and professional attitude.
  • Scary Black Man: Subverted. While he is a trigger-happy assassin, he is pretty congenial and friendly.
  • Shipper on Deck: He tries throughout the film to get Bryce and Amelia back together, even going as far as to speak to Amelia on Bryce's behalf on the phone while having a car chase with Dukhovich's mooks.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: During their final battle, Dukhovich tries to break Kincaid by saying no matter how many people he has killed, he will never redeem himself. Kincaid laughs in his face and tells him that he shouldn't have shot his bodyguard, before kicking him off the rooftop to his death.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Par for the course for being played by Jackson.
  • Slobs vs. Snobs: The slob; he leaves trails of death and destruction due to not giving a fuck in being cautious like Bryce.
  • Spanner in the Works: His testimony and the subsequent evidence he has stored away in an encrypted website is enough to put away Dukhovich forever, hence why the bastard is trying to have him killed. Darius is also the reason why Bryce's career took a nosedive.
  • You Killed My Father: Darius' first murder was the man who beat his father to death.

    Amelia Roussell
Played by: Élodie Yung
"You have to blame me for every little bump in your road, don't you?"

An Interpol agent and Bryce's ex-girlfriend.

  • Sole Survivor: The only Interpol agent who isn't killed in the ambush by Dukhovich's men.

    Sonia Kincaid
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/thehitmanswifesbodyguardsoniakincaid.png
"You know how many men I'd conned before you came along?"
Played by: Salma Hayek
"If you don’t help me, I am gonna put my strap-on on and I’m gonna fuck your dreams until they wish they were your nightmares."

Kincaid's temperamental wife, who also had a past as a con-woman.

  • Berserk Button: Do not insult her age.
  • Con Woman: She used to be this kind of person back in her day. For instance, she went into a loving relationship with Aristotle to share his riches, and then faked her death. Thus, she left with a precious necklace.
  • Cute But Psycho: She is beautiful, but also has a Hair-Trigger Temper that can result in anything from angry tirades, massive barfights, to massacres depending on she's slighted.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She's a murderer and con woman, but she's also a loving wife, and comes to consider Bryce her friend.
  • Happily Married: She adores Darius and wants to raise a family with him.
  • Hidden Depths: A brash, foul-mouthed woman Darius met in a seedy bar where she worked as a waitress. He fell in love with her after seeing her maim & kill the men harassing her. However, the sequel shows that she enjoys the finer things like fine dining, shopping, sight-seeing, as well as the Opera - of which, Carmen is one of her favorites.
  • In Love with Your Carnage: Darius fell in love with her while she was in the middle of a very brutal barfight.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Swears as much as her husband, if not more.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: She's not happy to hear the name Carmen after taking the phone from her husband. But it turns out he was getting tickets for the opera, which she loves.
  • Morality Pet: Darius would do anything for her. She also has one for herself in Bryce as shown below.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: She tells Bryce she understands why his mother's death traumatized him so much, because she saw her mother get eaten by a shark.
  • Parental Substitute: Hilariously, she declares herself to be Bryce's, along with an unwilling Darius. She even adopts him.
  • Pet the Dog: Has a good few with Bryce who seems to be one of the very few people she cares for besides Darius. The latter even tells Bryce that for all of his hating on Sonia, she loves him.
    • She's openly distressed when he takes a bullet for her.
    • Offers him pills which she thinks will help with the pain after the fact (sadly the pills were Lithium)
    • When meeting Bryce's father, she's very respectful and tries to help Bryce impress him by bringing up his heroics, even being annoyed with Darius for not helping and continuing to mock Bryce after hearing the story of his mother's death.
    • After hearing the aforementioned tragedy regarding Bryce's mother, she attempts to comfort him as best she can, though that also doesn't go over well.

    Vladislav Dukhovich
Played by: Gary Oldman
Appearances: The Hitman's Bodyguard | The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard note

"I am the rightful ruler of Belarus! As the ruler of my nation, I will do as I wish without exception, without apology! I recognize no authority that limits my power!"

The recently deposed President of Belarus, standing trial at the Hague for crimes against humanity. Unfortunately, he has more than a few tricks up his sleeve...

  • Ax-Crazy: He's a psychotic motherfucker who happily commits genocide, stabbed a subordinate in the hand with a pen for wanting to quit working for him, personally kills the family of a guy who spoke out against him, and goes as far as to orchestrates a terrorist attack with several casualties (including his own lawyer) in order to escape when he loses the trial.
  • Bad Boss: He stabs Foucher in the hand with a pen when the latter attempts to terminate his contract early. Later, he threatens him with death after Darius provides damning evidence of his crimes in the trial; he never gets to fulfil his threat, though.
  • Beard of Evil: A President Evil with a goatee.
  • Big Bad: Of the first movie.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: When Darius says that he's going to kill him for shooting his bodyguard, Dukhovich has no idea who Darius is talking about. Justified as he had never met Bryce or knew what he looked like.
  • Car Cushion: He lands on a car after getting kicked off the Hague building, displaying his corpse for the crowd outside to see.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: After he loses the trial, he goes on a rant, admitting to his crimes with pride.
  • Crazy-Prepared: When he lost his trial, it's revealed that he had planned for that possibility by having his men launch a terrorist attack upon the court, get rescued by one of his goons in disguise from the Hague's soldiers, and then escape in a hijacked hospital helicopter flown by his men.
  • Disney Villain Death: Kincaid kicks him off the rooftop, falling on a parked car below.
  • Entitled Bastard: He says to the court after losing that he can do whatever he wants as president and that he will not submit to any authority, right before he bombs the court and attempts to escape in the chaos.
  • Evil Is Petty: He murdered a man's family and sent the dude to a gulag for speak out against him.
  • Evil Wears Black: He wears black in every major scene he's in.
  • Facial Horror: His face is scarred from attempted dioxin poisoning.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Presents himself formally and elegantly, but it does little to hide the monster he is.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: A tyrannical dictator who wears a pair of glasses. They fall off during the chase on top of the Hague.
  • Hate Sink: Rightfully called a monster by one of his victims, Dukhovich has no concern for human life, committing various atrocities, including genocide, out of bloodlust and pettiness. When he's exposed to the court, he arrogantly says that he can do whatever he wants and shows no remorse for his actions.
  • Knight of Cerebus: None of his scenes at the Hague are played for laughs, and his introductory scene involving him ransacking the home of a professor who spoke out against him before executing the man's family while he is Forced to Watch as well as the climax where he blows up the Hague as the case turns against him are pretty horrific.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Dukhovich is certainly willing to kill people himself, but most of the time they're unarmed prisoners or children. His main action in the climax is having a henchman bomb the courthouse and running away from Darius.
  • President Evil: He was the president of Belarus until being deposed, though, if he isn't found guilty, he can return to former position of power, which is why everyone's so desperate to try him.
  • Sore Loser: He had his men do the following to try to escape justice.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: For the most part, the movie is a light-hearted action romp. However, Dukhovich is portrayed as a cold-blooded monster who is treated with deadly seriousness.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Personally guns down the political dissenter's wife in his first scene.
  • Would Hurt a Child: …and does the same to their son right after.

    Jean Foucher
"I've come for my money. I delivered as promised."

A corrupt Interpol assistant director working as Dukhovich's inside man.

  • Affably Evil: Even though he's working with Dukhovich, he acts rather pleasant to Amelia.
  • In the Back: Michael takes him out with a gunshot to the back as Foucher tries to kill Amelia.
  • The Mole: He quickly turns out to be on Dukhovich's payroll.

    Takashi Kurosawa
Played by: Tsuwayuki Saotome
Appearances: The Hitman's Bodyguard | The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard note

A Japanese businessman Bryce works for in the beginning.

  • Affably Evil: Even if he is corrupt, he seems to be a decent enough employer; he sincerely thanks Bryce for his services and waves goodbye.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Courtesy of Kincaid sniping him at 300 meters.
  • My Greatest Failure: Even at the beginning of the second movie, his death still haunts Bryce.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He's just one client, but his death ruins Bryce's job and his relationship with Amelia.

    Mr. Seifert
Played by: Richard E. Grant
"I'd never forget the face of the man who saved my life in my darkest hour. Come on, bro! Let's do some blow together."

A nervous, pill-popping English businessman Bryce works for after Kurosawa's assassination.

  • Nervous Wreck: Justified, given the circumstances in which he's found, but it doesn't make his jittery antics any less annoying.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In the second movie, he recognizes Bryce while he's trying to buy codes he needs from a criminal, blows his cover, and triggers a firefight.

Introduced in The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard

    Aristotle Papadopoulos
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/thehitmanswifesbodyguardaristotlepapadopoulos.png
"Say hello to my little filos."
Played by: Antonio Banderas
"You have suffocated my country, Mr. Fisher. But mark my words... in four days time, at the exact moment your sanctions will commence, all of Europe’s infrastructure will burn. Financial markets will collapse. And millions of lives will be lost! While Greece will return to her RIGHTFUL PLACE AT THE CENTER OF CIVILIZATION!"

A Greek terrorist who seeks to unleash a devastating cyber attack on Europe.

  • Big Bad: Of the second film.
  • Boom, Headshot!: He is killed in this manner by Darius and Sonia.
  • Contrasting Sequel Antagonist: To Dukhovich. They are both monstrous jingoistic bastards. However, while Dukhovich is Hated by All but his men, Papadopoulos is respected and seemingly legitimate. And while Dukhovich spends all his time imprisoned at the Hague, Papadopoulos is free to move around wherever he wants, which gives him more freedom and opportunity for his crimes. Papadopoulos' schemes are also much bigger and more deadly and he has a personal connection with a protagonist in the form of Sonia.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Much like Dukhovich from the first film, none of his scenes are Played for Laughs and the scenes where he suffocates a diplomat and him shutting down an entire city are treated very seriously.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: Aristotle not only prides himself on his rich lifestyle, but also more sophisticated things like dancing, literature and art.
  • More Dakka: This is his go-to-solution when dealing with Darius in the final battle. He arms himself with a machine gun and unloads bullets across the room.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Aristotle tends to wear very fashionable suits.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: He maintains an air of calmness with every word spoken, especially with every murderous act he commits.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Just look at the page quote. He raises his voice at the end of his rant to Mr. Fisher, while the latter is being suffocated. Given his love for his home country, as well as the possibility of more European sanctions threatening Greece, he had every reason to be angrier.
  • Trumplica: Just like a certain ex-President, Aristotle is jingoistic, more than a little hostile towards Europe and sports lovely blond hair. He also shares a surname with George Papadopoulos, a Trump campaign member who was indicted for making false statements to the FBI.

    Magnusson
Played by: Tom Hopper
"I just wanted to say, it's an absolute honor to be engaged in a car chase with someone of your skill set."

A renowned bodyguard, who was hired by Aristotle.

  • The Ace: He is considered one of the best in the bodyguarding business.
  • Affably Evil: Despite working for the main villain of the second movie, he doesn't even act like a bad guy. He compliments Bryce's driving during a car chase and even offers a ceasefire to Sonia! However, the compliment is subverted when it turns out that it happened in Bryce's dream while he is passed out from taking Sonia's meds.
  • Eye Scream: He has a habit of poking people's eyes out with his vape pen knife in a fight.
  • Let's Fight Like Gentlemen: After taking Bryce's gun aboard Aristotle's boat, he doesn't use it at all. Instead, he dismantles it and settles for a fight where the two use everything in the room as a weapon.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: At the end of the day, he's just a bodyguard doing his job. Even if the one he's protecting is a terrorist.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Bryce comments on how he is thinking of taking up vaping, just because Magnusson does it.

    Zento
Played by: Kristofer Kamiyasu
"I can see around corners! Through walls... and sofas. Even your heat signature looks old!"

A hitman, who was hired by Aristotle.

  • Evil Gloating: In the final battle, he taunts Darius for being old and about having only one bullet left in his Magnum 44. He then proceeds to list the benefits of his high-tech gun, which can bend and view any targets with a thermal imaging camera.
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: During his gunfight, he is offended when Darius calls his grandmother a Thai prostitute due to him being Japanese.
  • Moe Greene Special: Darius kills him by deliberately shooting at a statue's butt to ricochet his bullet. It goes through Zento's orange safety glasses and hits his left eye.

    Michael Bryce Sr.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/thehitmanswifesbodyguardmichaelbrycesr.png
"As his bodyguard, I strongly advise you to put the gun down."
Played by: Morgan Freeman
"Nothing like taking a bullet to make you feel like a man."

Bryce's stepfather, who is also a bodyguard.

  • Berserk Button: Despite holding his son in contempt, Bryce Sr. gets visibly angered when Bryce insults or talks back to him after his betrayal and physically shoves him down and insults his mother. When Bryce outright disowns him later, Bryce Sr. is visibly angered and attacks him with renewed vigour.
  • Good Stepfather: When Bryce, Darius and Sonia arrive at Bryce Sr.'s residence, he immediately comforts Bryce over his bodyguarding failures, has a meal with the three and provides them a safe house. However, this is subverted when the whole thing turns out to be a trap for Aristotle, with Bryce Sr. revealed to be a smooth-talking, manipulative man who never cared for Bryce.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: Although he seems to accept the fact that Bryce lost his bodyguarding license, he later reveals to Bryce that he actually sees him as a disappointment.
  • Karmic Death: Bryce Sr. forces Bryce out of his life due to losing his bodyguarding license, not even bothering to inform Aristotle of his whereabouts. This comes to bite him in the ass later on, as Bryce ends up being the one to kill him.
  • Kick the Dog: He reveals his treachery and cuts ties with Bryce in the cruelest way possible: verbally abusing and belittling him as a "pantywaist" and stain on his legacy, shoving him to the floor, telling him he told the AAA review board to bar him for life, taunting him that he'll never know who his real father and basically calling his mother a whore.
  • Slashed Throat: Bryce kills him by stabbing him in the throat with a pocketknife during their final battle.
  • Villain Respect:
    • While bleeding out from Bryce's penknife wound, he compliments Bryce on this surprise attack. He then calmly tells Bryce that he can either let the cyber attack happen, or manually shut it down and blow up the ship. Even if he compares this choice to Bryce's gelato incident, this reminder allowed Bryce to stop Aristotle's plan.
    • Him not verbally abusing Bryce like he did in their last interaction, even while fighting him to the death, implies that Sr. is impressed that Bryce stopped caring about his licence and Sr.'s approval, got his fuck on (as Bryce himself would say) and tracked the yacht down.
  • Villain's Dying Grace: Warning his son of the yacht's self-destruct system before bleeding to death may be this, as it allows Bryce and the Kincaids to escape in time.
  • Walking Spoiler: As you can see from the tropes and white out spaces, he's not as benevolent as he first appears.
