The Walister Resistance (Walsta Liberation Army)

A militant organization established by Duke Ronwey to counter Hierophant Balbatos's ethnic-cleansing campaign, it was initially on the brink of defeat until Denam and the Xenobian exiles came to their aid. As one of the two powers vying for control over Southern Valeria, the fate of the Resistance depends on the choices made by the player.

    In General
  • Animal Motifs: A swan adorns the emblem of the Resistance.
  • Blind Obedience: Much of the nobility within the Resistance willingly side with Duke Ronwey in spite of his more questionable actions. On the Law and Chaos routes, their numbers have either been purged or cast out in favor of more like-minded allies.
  • Blue Is Heroic: As allies of Denam, members of the Resistance are mostly decked in deep blue with bright green used to accent it. Upon turning hostile in certain routes, they forego blue as a dominant color in favor of beige.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: While the circumstances that lead up to this trope differ between routes, the Resistance ultimately finds itself led by Denam. This alone is enough to unnerve the Bakram once word of his victory against the Dark Knights in Phidoch Castle begin to spread.
  • Decapitated Army: Ronwey and Leonar's deaths help pave the way for Denam to take over the reins.
  • Divided We Fall: This almost becomes the Resistance's downfall in the Law route as the truth behind the Balmamusa massacre gets spread throughout Valeria, leading to the Galgastani uniting even more and the Walister becoming disillusioned with Ronwey's poor leadership.
  • Faction Calculus: Cannons. Due to their smaller numbers, the Resistance cannot directly face the Galgastani or Bakram on even footing, forcing them to make a non-intervention pact with the Dark Knights and limit themselves to minor skirmishes. They eventually gain the upper hand after successfully joining forces with the Galgastani who despise Balbatos and taking over Phidoch Castle on all three routes, turning them into a Balanced army.
  • False Flag Operation: In order to unite the Walister like never before, Ronwey hatches a plot to fuel outrage against Balbatos by slaughtering the people of Balmamusa under the guise of vengeful Galgastani troops. While the plan initially attracts new recruits for the Resistance, its success hinges on whether Denam chooses to join the massacre or not. Him partaking in it leads Vyce to defect and form his own faction to bleed the Resistance's numbers even more. On the other hand, his refusal causes the Resistance to gain the numbers they need to defeat Balbatos.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: Thief. Due to their limited numbers and resources, the Walister Resistance is forced to engage in covert tactics and asymmetrical warfare against the much larger Kingdom of Galgastan. They eventually outgrow this once Southern Valeria is in their hands.
  • Home Base: Almorica Castle serves as the main base of operations for the Resistance once Ronwey is freed. In Reborn, the castle has a more disheveled appearance to properly reflect the Walister's lack of proper funds in rebuilding it.
  • A House Divided: Happens in the Law route's version of Chapter 2 with Resistance members leaving in outright disgust due to Ronwey's misdeeds coming to light and his own incompetence worsening the war effort. Once he is deposed and the New Walister Alliance is willingly integrated into the Resistance, it no longer becomes an issue.
  • La Résistance: The Walister Resistance starts off as this, though their efforts to grow as a faction are impacted by Denam's decisions at the end of the first chapter. If he commits to following the Duke's orders, the False Flag Operation at Balmamusa will not yield the desired effects on account of Vyce exposing the truth behind it. Should he go against the Duke's wishes, then the plan will lead to the Resistance's ranks swelling.
  • Leitmotif: Their leitmotif is officially called "Theme of WLO" (Walister Liberation Order).
  • The Purge: In the Law route, much of the people loyal to Duke Ronwey are either slain or forced out of Almorica Castle. It also happens at a later point in the Chaotic route with Leonar purposely gathering Ronwey's loyalists at Coritanae so they can die at the hands of Denam's order.

    Duke Ronwey

Duke Juda Ronwey (Judah Ronway)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/duke_ronwey.png
Voiced by: Masaki Terasoma (JP), Brian George (EN)

The leader of the Walister Resistance. After the onset of war, he led the beleaguered Walister people in their resistance of the Galgastani. The Duke was held prisoner in his own castle at Almorica.

  • Aristocrats Are Evil: While he may look like the Big Good at first, it quickly becomes clear he's a power-hungry noble who doesn't truly care for the Walister people, it just so happens that leading the Walister Resistence is a convenient vehicle for him to assume more power.
  • Bad Boss: Especially in the Lawful route, in which he tries to micromanage the war.
  • Big Good: Subverted In chapter 1, he acts as the benevolent leader and a Reasonable Authority Figure for Denam and his army. The end of the chapter shows he's not as altruistic as he first appears and ends up as a major antagonist in chapter 2 and 3.
  • Black-and-Gray Morality: The Gray one when compared to Balbatos. Ronwey might be very very flawed and not a good person, considered shrewd, manipulative and power-hungry on his own. However, he doesn't indulge himself with Obviously Evil bad acts like concentration/forced labor camp like Balbatos gleefully did nor did he answer everything with violence. Generally, he tries his best to win the favor of the Walisters even at his most incompetent parts (Lawful route).
  • Fatal Flaw: Pride. In all three routes the image-politicking he engages in to legitimize himself and the Walister ultimately leads to his downfall.
    • In the Lawful route he pushes for a decisive rout of Galgastan in the field, despite Galgastan's numerical superiority (and Leonar advising patience which might have enabled a surer position for them). The attempt results in the humiliation and near-collapse of the Walister; and reveals his lack of strategic acumen, necessitating his removal.
    • In the Neutral route he leverages considerable resources and manpower to arrest Vyce after he deserts the Walister. This only succeeds in making Vyce so desperate and wrothful, he murders Ronwey in a suicidal attack.
    • In the Chaotic route he elevates Vyce to higher duties and stations, as a reward for his loyalty and to better harness him as a symbol of the Walister cause. His patronage stokes Vyce's ambitions, and Vyce ultimately betrays Ronwey to his rival, Brantyn.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Denam's decision at Balmamusa has a great effect on Ronwey's later attitude: If Denam obeyed him, Vyce turns against him and spreads word around Valeria about the nature of the False Flag Operation, fracturing the Walister and in turn weakening his foothold against the Galgastani. If Denam disobeyed, Vyce instead dives head first into the plan, and things proceed without a hitch, leading to a united Walister front that overwhelms the Galgastani. Denam's decision to join him at the Chaotic/Neutral split also effects how corrupt he's willing to become, as well, bargaining with Lodis and her Dark Knights in the Chaotic route without him.
  • General Failure: Many of his gambits turn out to cause more harm than good in the long term, most notably the Balmamusa False Flag Operation, which creates a rift in his chain of command that eventually proves ruinous. This becomes most apparent in the Lawful route, where Vyce successfully exposes the act in public and prevents it from uniting the Walister and the dissident Galgastani against Balbatos; Ronway becomes impatient, stops listening to Leonar and orders a full attack on the Galgastani forces before they're split, leading to a costly defeat and rendering Denam's feint pointless. Both Leonar, Denam and most of the Resistance lose faith on him after that. Which leads to a rebellion where he's usurped.
  • Jigsaw Plot: Depending on your choices, Ronwey can become a pathetic Bad Boss (Lawful), or an actually competent leader that ousted Balbatos (Chaotic). Then when the plot branches again, Ronwey can either become a Reasonable Authority Figure that always opposes the Loslorien (Neutral) or ends up bargaining an alliance with the Dark Knights ASAP to try and take control of southern Valeria (Chaotic). See For Want Of A Nail above for how it came to be.
  • The Leader: As the most powerful and influential Walister, he's the figure in which they all rally around.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He's a schemer and often tries to use underhanded tactics to turn people to his cause, often with mixed results.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is derived from Ronové, a demon from the Ars Goetia who specializes in rhetoric and languages. This fits well with Ronwey's way with words during the early part of the story.
  • Non-Action Guy: He's not a fighter or a general and leaves the frontline to his officers.
  • The Strategist: Serves as this in Chapter 1, Chapter 2L, and Chapter 3N for the party; deciding their next objective and explaining the reasoning behind it. Played straight in Chapters 1 and 3. Thoroughly subverted in 2L, where excessive zeal undoes him. While not the guileful mastermind he may see himself as, he's generally practical in his reasoning and only pursues risky courses of action as a last resort. (Until he becomes convinced of his own strength, that is.)
  • Smug Snake: On the one hand, he's a halfway decent strategist who understands human nature enough to turn a situation to his advantage. On the other, he's not The Chessmaster he thinks he is and believes he has more sway over his subordinates than he really does; when things don't go as he calculated (as in the Lawful route), Ronway's not nearly adaptable enough to regain the upper hand and even ignores practical advice that might turn things around. As such he only gets so far before he ends up killed, one way or another.
  • Villain Has a Point: As detestable as his words and actions can be, and as shortsighted as he is, Ronway’s not entirely wrong in his assessments of certain people and situations: he was correct in predicting the people of Balmamusa wouldn’t be swayed by the Golyat trio’s zeal and would have needed far more to be rallied to action; he also accurately surmises that Vyce’s departure on the Neutral route belies that the youth isn’t motivated by any higher ideals and his sole conviction was his all-encompassing envy towards Denam… In both cases though, where he fails is in preferring the stick to the carrot and ultimately creates more problems than was needed.

    Sir Leonar

Leonar Reci Rimon (Leonard Leci Limon)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leonar_reci_rimon_7.png
Voiced by: Kenyuu Horiuchi (JP;Sega Saturn), Masashi Tamaki (JP;Reborn), Daniel Bonjour (EN;Reborn)

A Walister who captains the Knights of Almorica. He serves as the right hand of Duke Ronwey, and is a vital member of the Resistance. His mother was killed by the Galgastani.

  • Arc Villain: In the Chaotic route specifically, Leonar's role as an antagonist is cemented when Denam refuses to rejoin at the end of Chapter 2; following the defeat of Xaebos midway through Chapter 3, he leads the main opposition to Denam within the Resistance.
  • Broken Pedestal: For multiple parties at that:
    • To Ravness, who denounces him and Ronway at the Chapter 1 climax.
    • Arycelle, as soon as she discovers the truth of the Balmamusa Massacre, either before or during Chapter 2.
    • Finally, to Denam at various points (although when exactly depends on the route chosen).
  • Came Back Wrong: Courtesy of Nybeth, in Lawful and Chaotic routes. Leonar stayed dead without unwanted revival in Neutral route because Nybbeth was already a Lich when met in the Palace of the Dead in the original version, while in the PSP version where he doesn't turn Lich early, he's already done his Death Knight project with Gildas.
  • Climax Boss: The last opponent on Chapter 2 of the Lawful route; after killing him, Denam is successfully able to unite the Walister forces to defeat the Galgastani army in Chapter 3.
  • Deceased Fall-Guy Gambit: In the Lawful Route, Leonar plans to kill Denam after murdering the Duke, then lay the blame on him in order to rally the Walister together. When things don't go out the way Leonar planned and Denam lands a killing blow on him instead, he asks Denam to instead lay the blame on him so that the Walister can rally under the Hero of Golyat.
  • Duel Boss: In the Chaotic route he challenges Denam to a duel at Coritanae, which the player can either accept or decline (the latter ensuring a more traditional fight). In Lawful this is played with, as Denam is the sole deployable unit but is backed by two to three Guest NPCs who can technically flee if their health is reduced far enough, making the battle a duel by default.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: He joins the party as a guest for two story battles during Chapter 1.
  • Hypocrite: He finds the modus operandi of the Liberation Front distasteful, yet ends up doing far worse atrocities than them to help the Walister gain the upper hand.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Leonar barely has any regrets on his part at the war, especially the Balmamusa Massacre.
Leonar: [To Arycelle] "Do you think we did not understand what it was we did? What it would mean? It was a vile plot from the start, but it had to be done. For our people - our future! Galgastan hunted us. We had no other card left to play. So I did it - did it gladly! And if I had it to do again, I would!"
  • Implied Love Interest: It's all but confirmed he had an affair with Arycelle.
  • Jigsaw Plot: Depending on what route you take, he either becomes a nice guy who tries to betray you at the end, is a nice guy regardless, or fights you anyways. Some considered it a letdown that he didn't join in Neutral, where he's always a nice guy.
  • My Death Is Just the Beginning: In the Lawful route, when he dies, he tells Denam to blame everything on him, making Denam into a hero who can finally unite the continent.
  • Number Two: He's Duke Ronwey's right-hand man.
  • Recurring Boss: In both Lawful and Chaotic, Nybeth raises him and Commander Xaebos as undead to fight Denam in the Palace of the Dead (Floor 4 in the SNES/PSX, Floor 5 in the PSP/Reborn).
  • Route Boss: He's fought in both the Lawful and Chaotic routes.
  • Secretly Selfish: Implied during the Neutral route. Leonar there is an idealistic, reasonable guy. However, after his death by Catiua and the eventual liberation of Phidoch Castle, Denam monologues on just how sincere Leonar was in all his reasonability and idealism.
  • The Starscream: In the Lawful route, where he suggests Denam to kill the Duke just so he could use him as a pariah to rally the Walisters on.
  • Suicide by Cop:
    • Implied in the Chaotic route where it's revealed that he purposely put all the dark-hearted resistance members in Denam's path, and admits that Denam was right after he is mortally wounded.
    • Subverted in the Lawful route where after you mortally wound him, he tells Denam to blame all the atrocities they have committed on him so he looks like a villain and Denam looks like a hero who everyone will follow. Denam asks if this was his plan all along. He replies he would have preferred Denam died instead but since he is dying, might as well help unify the kingdom under Denam, who is capable enough to lead them to freedom.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: He can convince Denam to sanction the massacre at Balmamusa using The Needs of the Many and the greater good, which comes about again later when he convinces him to turn on Ronway.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: While he truly wants to strengthen his countrymen and protect the Walister, ultimately Leonar will commit any heinous act if he deems it necessary to achieve this end.

    Dame Ravness

Ravness Loxaerion

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dame_ravness.png
Voiced by: Rika Fukami (JP), Helen Kennedy Turner (EN)

A new character added to the PSP version of the game. She is a Walister who serves with the Knights of Almorica and is a close confidant of Duke Ronwey, second only to Sir Leonar in rank. She is the opposite of Leonar, always sticking with the side that refuses to take part in the massacre of Balmamusa. Though ironically, she is only recruitable if Denam sides with Leonar (and completes multiple other requirements.

  • Braids of Action: Wears her long silver hair in two braids on the side of her head.
  • Cutscene Incompetence: Despite her combat abilities, it takes a single crossbow bolt from Vyce to fatally wound her in the Chaotic route.
  • Doomed Moral Victor: On the Chaotic/Neutral branch, she’s shot by Vyce for opposing the Balmamusa massacre (and for being part-Galgastani) and dies days later. Her stance is ultimately vindicated when Denam, who she pled to be an exemplar to their people, ends up leading them after Ronway and Leonar die.
  • Expy: Originating from a rerelease long after Final Fantasy Tactics, she takes up a lot of Agrias Oak's traits in such a way it probably isn't coincidental.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: She joins the party as a guest for the last three battles of Chapter 1, before the divergence point at Balmamusa.
  • Guide Dang It!: Recruiting her is particularly hard and almost impossible without following a guide, not to mention it will take you quite a while. First, she is locked behind the Lawful route (meaning you have to take part in the Balmamusa massacre), and she must survive said battle (while she tries to kill you). Then in chapter 2 before you take the boat back home, you must at some point read the Warren Report to hear a rumor about her, then do an optional battle to save her (keeping her alive during said battle again, though at least this time she isn't on the enemy side). Then during chapter 3, you must recruit Jeunan (who can be missed if you make the wrong dialogue choices), then later deploy him in a certain optional battle later on unlocked again through the Warren Report (during which certain dialogue must be heard, so don't kill the leader too fast). After that, continue the campaign until you take Coritanae, then return to where the previously mentioned battle occurred and win the battle while protecting Ravness one last time. Only then will she finally join you, if you choose the right dialogue.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: She's of mixed race Walister and Galgastani; if she survives in a Lawful playthrough; both ethnic groups mistrust her.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: In addition to being the most morally upstanding of the Resistance high command, she’s one of the few who can access a class that previously was exclusive to Myrdin and Gildas, the White Knight.
  • Lady of War: A dignified and graceful female warrior.
  • Light 'em Up: Her default elemental affinity in Reborn is Light, which reflects on her being the most morally upstanding member of the Walister Resistance's high command. And maybe a meta reference to how the Rune Knight/Valkyrie class in the PSP version would mainly get pigeonholed into just using Divine Magic, due to the higher spell flexibility that Light had compared to the other elements.
  • Magic Knight: Her starting class is Valkyrie and she frequently attacks with magic when she appears as a guest.
  • Mutually Exclusive Party Members: She's only recruitable on the Lawful route; thus, she can't fight alongside Cistina, Folcurt, Bayin, Cerya, Oelias, Dievold or Cressida.
  • Noble Fugitive: Ravness becomes a fine example of this trope in the Lawful route's later chapters (provided she's still alive in each hostile encounter).
  • Route Boss: In Chapter 1, on the Lawful path at Balmamusa; although, she's technically a solitary third party between Denam's forces and the Galgastani soldiers and doesn't need to be fought at all (she'll die if reduced to 0HP, but retreats if all the Galgastani are killed first).
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: No matter what, she turns on Ronway when he orders the massacre of innocents, deeming him a morally-deficit leader.
  • Ship Tease: Her and Canopus.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: Her dilemma in the Lawful Route, due to rebelling against Ronwey because of the Balmamusa Massacre.

    Thunder Maiden Arycelle

Arycelle Dania (Aloser Danya)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arycelle_dania_2.png
Voiced by: Run Sasaki (JP;Sega Saturn), Chie Nakamura (JP;Reborn), Stephanie Sheh (EN;Reborn)

Leonar's ex-girlfriend from Balmamusa, pissed off about the massacre due to her brother's death. At first she opposes Denam greatly but depending on the route (and version of the game) she can become an ally.

In the Lawful route she's part of the New Walister Alliance.

  • Age-Gap Romance: Arycelle is 8 years younger than Leonar, her lover who is 27.
  • Broken Pedestal: She has one in Leonar once she learns the truth of Balmamusa; in Chapter 3 of the Chaotic route, their battle dialogue has her disparaging him for it, noting that her brother (one of the victims) had previously saved Leonar's life and this was how his loyalty was repaid…? Made worse by the fact that she and Leonar were lovers, her dialogue insinuating they were outright intimate. Also applies to Ronway, as in Chaotic she's initially incensed that Denam would assert the Duke was involved prior to learning the truth.
  • Defector from Decadence: When she learns the Walister Resistance were behind the Balmamusa massacre, including her injured brother, she leaves out of disgust. She then either joins with Vyce (on the Lawful route) or Denam (on the Chaotic route. On the PSP remake and Reborn, she can technically rejoin the Resistance either on Neutral — although her faith in Denam initially plummets and must be rebuilt — or Lawful when Vyce agrees to join forces with Denam (assuming she's alive).
  • Dual Boss: In the Lawful route, her second battle is alongside Vyce at Rhime.
  • Fiery Redhead: She's got bright red hair and is deeply passionate and emotional.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: She always fights with Denam’s as an ally before joining him:
    • On the Lawful route, if she survives at Rhime (PSP/Reborn) she’ll join Vyce in aiding Denam when Leonar tries to kill him, and eventually he recruited late into Chapter 3.
    • On the Chaotic route, in the SNES/PSX version she returned at Tynemouth Hill and fought Vyce alongside Denam before joining his party in full. In the PSP/Reborn, she’d be encountered at Xeod Moors being pursued by Vance; if she survives this fight she joins as a guest, helping at Lake Bordu against Genzo and then with Vyce at Tynemouth before being fully recruitable.
  • Hero Antagonist: At first, anyway; she's both morally and personally incensed by the Balmamusa Massacre, which sets her on a collision course with Denam regardless of the path chosen:
    • In the Lawful route where he's guilty, she opposes him as part of the New Walister Alliance; in the original version of the game, she perishes in the battle of Rhime. In the PSP and Reborn versions where she can avoid getting killed, she can join Denam's batallion and the Holy Knights in opposition to Ronway, the mastermind of the slaughter.
    • In the Chaotic route where he's The Scapegoat, she begins to mellow down after Denam saves her life, following him until she learns the truth of the Massacre from Vyce. She then joins his team in full, directing her anger towards the true culprit, Ronway.
  • Meaningful Name: Takes her name from Allocer, one of the 23 demonic dukes of Hell in the Ars Goetia.
  • Mutually Exclusive Party Members: In the original and PSX versions, she only joins on the Chaotic route (and leaves the party in Chapter 3 if Neutral is then chosen). Thus she can't fight alongside Vyce, Jeunan, Ocionne, Xapan, Oelias or Dievold; nor could she be in the party with the generics exclusive to Lawful or Neutral. Subverted in the PSP and Reborn versions, where she can join on all routes, although getting her on Lawful requires some effort.
  • Number Two: Becomes Vyce's right-hand in the Lawful route; if she survives, she follows him in uniting his forces with Denam's after Ronway and Leonar are dealt with.
  • Recurring Boss: In Lawful she's fought in two battles, first at Port Asyton and later at Rhime.
  • Red Baron: The PSP remake gives her the title "Thunder Maiden" and she's usually hailed as Walister's best archer ever.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: She is nonplussed about the Balmamusa Massacre and the death of her brother in a rather cowardly way.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: If you enter the Neutral Route, where Denam rejoins Ronwey's resistance, Arycelle won't put up with this. In the original, she will outright leave the party. In the remake when this happens, instead of just leaving your party, her loyalty level plummets since you are being wishy washy in her eyes. Unless you manage to raise her loyalty back up very fast, she will leave your party permanently. Hope you aren't in New Game Plus!
  • Shock and Awe: Her Red Baron status as "Thunder Maiden" is not just a title. It helps that the best Bow Finisher happens to be Lightning-elemental.
  • Shout-Out: In the PSP version, Arycelle is given 'Thunder Maiden' title as a homage to "Thunder God" Cidolfas Orlandeau, since both Orlandeau and Arycelle were notoriously powerful units in the original versions of both games (since the original version came before Orlandeau's game where he built up his 'uber broken unit' creds, and her game's remake is after).
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Leonar, who's responsible for the Balmamusa Massacre, and she hunts the one responsible for it.
  • Younger Than They Look: Arycelle is 19, but the artwork for the remake makes her look some years older.

    Abuna Donnalto

Donnalto Presance (Donald Presance)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/donnalto_presance.png
Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (JP;Sega Saturn), Katsuhisa Houki (JP;Reborn), Jamieson Price (EN)

A Walister who fights for the Resistance and serves the Order of Philaha. He once cared for orphans at a church in Almorica, but it was razed to the ground by the Galgastani after war broke out, and he lost all that he held dear. He now devotes his life to seeking vengeance. He is friends with Leonar and Arycelle as well.

  • Church Militant: A religious preacher at heart, but heavily dedicated to avenging his lost flock.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: As shown on the Chaotic route, Donnalto viscerally castigates Leonar for his involvement with Balmamusa; on the Lawful route, despite supporting Denam and thus condoning the massacre, if he engages Arycelle in conversation at Port Asyton his Loyalty drops 20 points after she castigates him — showing his internally conflicted about the matter overriding his initial self-justification. This is also explored in his battlefield dialogue with Ravness on the latter route.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: On the Lawful route, he initially stands by his choice to side with Denam and argues with Ravness over it during the second Balmamusa battle. Then Arycelle furiously derides him during their encounter at Port Asyton, and he has a Heel Realisation; this continues into the battle at Rhime where he acknowledges her words opening his eyes, and refuses to pretend anymore that choice was remotely justified.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: He's quite chummy with people decades younger than him.
  • Mutually Exclusive Party Members: With Felicia, as Donnalto needs to die in his introductory battle to recruit her.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: His original name and physical appearance was clearly intended to be Donald Pleasance.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Donnalto sends this accusation at Leonar during Denam's last battle against him in the Chaotic Route.
Donnalto: "And this gives excuse to murder our people as you did in Balmamusa? If the means you use are any judge, you are no different than Balbatos and Brantyn!"
  • Running Gag: A meta joke concerning how long the game has existed in all 3 of its iterations is tied to him. In the PSP remake he remarks it's been 15 years since he last fought undead, noting the 15 years since the SNES release. Reborn, which was released a decade later, rephrases the line as "(a) quarter century".
  • Spell My Name With An S: The artbooks spells his name as "Donayld".
  • Took a Level in Dumbass: In the PSP version, he tries to use Exorcism on a standing undead and it doesn't work, saying that it had been fifteen years since he last fought undead and got rusty. Conveniently, fifteen years ago, his undead fighting tactic DID work because in the first version of the game Exorcism could insta-kill standing undead. This also serves as a clue as to how Exorcism works in the PSP version. Reborn even revised the script, changing the PSP version's 15 years to 25 years.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He and Leonar were quite close, drawn together by a shared desire to improve the Walister people's lot in life. However, Donnalto will follow Denam and leave the Resistance if the latter refuses the orders at Balmamusa, which strains that friendship; when they battle in the late Chaotic route, Donnalto rebuffs Leonar's justifications and scornfully considers him no better than their enemies.

    Sibyl Felicia

Felicia Malxion

A Walister that joins Denam's Order after you rescue Leonar in Krysaro, but only if Donnalto has died in the process.

    Bowmaid Sara

Sara Ostvald

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/female_archer.png

A Walister that joins Denam's Order after you rescue Leonar in Krysaro.

  • All There in the Manual: As a semi-generic unit, all of her characterization comes from her Warren Reports entry.
  • The Generic Guy: She's a semi-unique recruit, having slightly better stats but no story presence or characterization other than what her Warren Report has on her.

    Sir Voltare

Voltare Montrose (Voltel)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/male_knight.png

A Walister that joins Denam's Order after you rescue Leonar in Krysaro.

  • All There in the Manual: As a semi-generic unit, all of his characterization comes from his Warren Report entry.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: His default class.
  • The Generic Guy: He's a semi-unique recruit, having slightly better stats but no story presence or characterization other than what his Warren Report has on him.

    Spellbinder Modiliani

Vailand Modiliani (Mordiart)

Voiced by: Keith Silverstein (EN)

A Walister encountered as an enemy boss in the Lawful and Chaotic routes. He's a high-ranking officer who is personally loyal to Duke Ronwey.

  • All There in the Manual: Like most minor bosses, a lot of his characterization comes from his Warren Report entry.
  • Anti-Villain: He's not an evil man and is dedicated to the Walister cause, but his blind loyalty to Ronwey forces Denam to have to fight and kill him.
  • Badass Teacher: He used to be a magic teacher in Coritanae before the war started, but was imprisoned on false charges. Once he was rescued by the Duke, he joined the Resistance as a loyal soldier.
  • Berserk Button: Given how enraged he was when none of his students stood up for him, it’s unsurprising that he believes Treachery Is a Special Kind of Evil and loathes Denam in both his Lawful and Chaotic route encounters.
  • Frame-Up: He was a Walister who worked as a magic teacher in Coritanae, and once Balbatos' blood war started, Modiliani was arrested on false charges of being a member of an anti-Galgastan movement.
  • Reused Character Design: He uses the generic male Sorceror portrait.
  • Route Boss: He's never encountered in the Neutral route.
  • Squishy Wizard: As a sorcerer, he deals a lot of magic damage but can't take out much.
  • Undying Loyalty: He's personally loyal to Duke Ronwey due to being rescued by him in the first war against Galgastan. When Denam and Leonar rebel against the Duke in the Lawful route, Modiliani dies defending Almorica. In the Chaotic route, Leonar selects him to fight Denam because Leonar wants to get rid of him for being a Ronwey loyalist.
  • Unwitting Pawn: In the Chaotic route, Leonar has him fight Denam, knowing he'll be killed, thus making it easier for either Leonar or Denam to take over the Walister cause from the Duke.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: No matter the route, he has this attitude towards Denam for taking up arms against Walister forces.

    Sir Marino

Marino Arvine (Irvine)

Voiced by: Eiji Takeuchi (JP)

A Walister encountered as an enemy boss in the Lawful and Chaotic routes. He's a high-ranking officer who is personally loyal to Duke Ronwey.

  • All There in the Manual: Like most minor bosses, a lot of his characterization comes from his Warren Report entry.
  • Anti-Villain: He's not an evil man and is dedicated to the Walister cause, but his blind loyalty to Ronwey forces Denam to have to fight and kill him.
  • Blue Blood: He's the current heir to house Arvine, a noble house in Almorica that is known for their military history. Likely part of why he's so loyal to the duke and so hostile to the New Walister Alliance, who despises the nobility.
  • In the Blood: His family is known for their long military history and close allegiance to the Dukes of Almorica.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Despite being a loyal and high-ranking member of the Walister Resistance, he's unaware that the Balmamusa massacre was a False Flag Operation schemed by Ronwey and Leonar. His Warren Report entry ponders on how he would have reacted if he knew the truth, as he sincerely believes in Ronway's worthiness as a leader. The Lawful route does show that regardless of whether he believes in the truth of the matter, he’ll never turn his blade on the Duke.
  • Tin Tyrant: Like all Terror Knights, he's heavily armored and can cause Frightened on other units.
  • Reused Character Design: He uses the generic male Terror Knight portrait.
  • Route Boss: He's never encountered in the Neutral route.
  • Undying Loyalty: He's Duke Ronwey's most loyal commander. Even in the Law route when most of the Walister rebel against the Ronwey (including Denam, Leonar, and Ravness), he still remains firmly on the duke's side and defends him with his life.

    Sir Farrel

Farrel Ganache (Ganashe)

A Walister encountered as an enemy boss in the Chaotic route. He captured Folcurt at Krysaro and attempts to ambush Denam there, under Vyce's orders.

    Spellbinder Ramidos

Ramidos Mendoza

Voiced by: Maki Izawa (JP)

A Walister encountered as an enemy boss in the Chaotic route. She ambushes Denam alongside Xapan at the Gates of Almorica; in the older versions she does so at Golborza Plain.

  • All There in the Manual: Like most minor bosses, a lot of her characterization comes from her Warren Report entry.
  • Anti-Villain: She's a moral woman who fights Denam believing he's guilty of the Balmamusa Massacre.
  • Dual Boss: She fights alongside Xapan in the PSP/Reborn versions of the game (originally she ambushed him by herself on the road back to Almorica). If he's defeated first he'll just retreat, but he'll retreat if she's defeated, making her the true objective of the battle.
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: Her banter with Abuna Donnalto makes it clear she hates the Order of Philaha and doesn't believe their god is real, considering the whole religion just a fairy tale that tyrants like Balbatos and Brantyn use to control people. This is despite her magical knowledge, which comes from the gods.
Ramidos: You clergy are all alike. Invoke the name of God and you expect the people to follow you like sheep. Balbatos and Brantyn can scarce void their bowels without speaking Philaha's name. Well I'm not having any of it! Your god is just another faerie tale! Tell me, what god would visit war on his people? And a holy war, that's the richest of them all! I may not believe in gods, but the devils who brandish their steel before me are real enough!
  • My God, What Have I Done?: The spirits inform her of Denam's innocence as she's dying, and she perishes regretting her actions and apologizing to Denam.
  • Never Mess with Granny: She's an old spellcaster who lost her children and grandchildren during the war, and now uses her magic to serve the Walister Resistance in whatever way she can
  • Locked Out of the Loop: She's unaware of the truth about Banamusa and sincerely believes Denam is a traitor to the Walister. She only realizes his innocence as she's dying.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Her son(s), in-laws and grandchildren were all butchered early into the war by the Galgastani.
  • Route Boss: She's only fought in Chapter 2 of the Chaotic route.
  • Screw the Money, I Have Rules!: She flatly tells Xapan that she doesn't care for the bounty on Denam; as long as he's dead for Balmamusa (in which she lost friends) the finer details are irrelevant to her.
  • Squishy Wizard: As a sorceress, she has damage-dealing magic, but can't take much damage.
  • Talking to the Dead: She can communicate with the spirits of the death, which is how she finds out Denam is innocent. Before the war, she used these abilities to give comfort to grieving families.
  • We Used to Be Friends: She's an old acquaintance of Arycelle and Donnalto, and will be deeply disappointed to see them fighting alongside Denam.
  • You Killed My Father: Her entire family was killed during the war with Galgastan, so she joined the Resistance, as the only thing she has left is revenge.

  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She's cold to Denam when she first meets him in Krysaro, but will warm up to him if rescued.
  • The Generic Guy: She's a semi-unique recruit, having slightly better stats but little story presence or characterization other than what his Warren Report has on her.
  • Magic Knight: She's a mage knight who serves the Knights of Almorica, with her staring class being a Valkyrie.
  • Reused Character Design: She uses the generic female Valkyrie portrait.

A member of the Walister Resistance that can be rescued by Denam in Qadriga Fortress on the Neutral route.

  • The Generic Guy: He's a semi-unique recruit, having slightly better stats but little story presence or characterization other than what her Warren Report has on him.
  • Reused Character Design: He uses the generic male wizard portrait, which is notable since he's supposedly 62, but the wizard portrait look middle-aged.
  • You Killed My Father: He joined the Walister Resistance when his wife became a casualty of the war.

Voiced by: Takashi Aoki (JP)

A Walister officer who tried to claim Denam's head when he encountered him at Xeod Moors.

The New Walister Alliance (Neo Walsta Liberation Ally)

Appearing exclusively in the Law route, this faction was founded by Vyce in opposition to Duke Ronway's forces after the Balmamusa massacre. It consists of both former Resistance members like Arycelle who were convinced of the truth and defected in disgust, as well as those who weren't originally part of any faction.

    Gousin, Man-at-Arms

Gousin Blum (Gasun)

A Walister encountered as an enemy boss in the Lawful route. He's a member of the New Walister Alliance that attacks Denam at the Golborza Plain.

  • All There in the Manual: Like most minor bosses, a lot of his characterization comes from his Warren Report entry.
  • Butt-Monkey: His attempts to recruit Catiua to his cause gets his chewed on by her in a comical manner.
  • Rebel Leader: He wanted the fight for the Walister, but due to resenting the nobility, he never joined the Walister Resistance under the duke, but jumped at the opportunity when the New Walister Alliance was formed.
  • Red Baron: He earned the moniker "Gousin the Devout" for his dutiful devotion to the Order of Philaha.
  • Reused Character Design: He uses the generic male Ninja portrait.
