Consists of individuals not affiliated with any particular faction.

    Xapan the Mercenary

Xapan Illudas (Zapan Illudus)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xapan.png
Voiced by: Kenji Nomura (JP), David Shaugnessey (EN)

A Walister sellsword hired by the Resistance. He's a recruitable character in the Lawful route while an antagonist in the Chaotic route.

  • Affably Evil: Presented as such in the Chaotic route, where despite seeking Denam’s head he’s almost unfailingly genial towards him and his allies. This also shows up on Lawful’s Chapter 4, where he appears as an optional battle if his offer to join in Chapter 2 was declined; he only notes that Denam should have hired him earlier, and is still willing to offer again if given the chance as opposed to fighting to the death.
  • Arc Villain: He’s a persistent foe in the Chaotic branch of Chapter 2.
  • Badass in Distress: In the Lawful Route, he's being cornered by Darza's pirates in Qadriga fortress when Denam encounters him. It takes quite a few turns before he's in any danger, but he will eventually be overwhelmed.
  • Bash Brothers: Has some rapport with Canopus if recruited, as they bond over the fact both are sellswords with chill attitudes.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Xapan is this all the way, no matter the route, he's always this big, boisterous fighter with an axe and a hearty laugh to go (it even has its own animation!). If he's the highlight of the Lawful Ending, he also gave Denam a big hug for that.
  • Bounty Hunter: In the Chaotic route, he relentlessly pursues Denam and Catiua due to the bounty placed on their heads.
  • Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon: Xapan has a very brutish look, boorish (in a hearty manner) personality, and he's always seen with a big badass axe. If you take the time to recruit him only in Chapter 4 in the Lawful Route on the original, he nets you a unique axe.
  • No Place for Me There: In the Lawful Princess ending, he decides to leave the now-peaceful Valeria and seek mercenary work on the continent; given his line of work he doesn’t think it likely he’ll ever return. Denam offers him the vacated captaincy of the guard at Heim as an alternative, but Xapan refuses due to feeling that a man like him who profits off warfare isn’t the right choice for the role; nonetheless he thanks him for the warm sentiment.
  • Dual Boss: In the PSP/Reborn version, his third battle of the Chaotic route has him fight alongside Ramidos. The victory condition is to defeat both, but Xapan will retreat without his health being reduced if she is killed first.
  • Mutually Exclusive Party Members: He can only be recruited on the Lawful route. Thus he cannot fight alongside Cistina, Folcurt, Bayin, Cerya, Oelias, Dievold or Cressida.
  • Only in It for the Money: He's pretty open about the fact he's only loyal to money. In fact, the only reason he has some affinity to the Walister Resistance is due to him being a Walister himself, who would never be hired by Galgastan due to prejudice.
  • Psycho for Hire: While he's a mercenary who is Only in It for the Money in every route, it's only in the Chaotic route (where Vyce is paying him to pursue Denam) that his viler characteristics are revealed, such as his creepy attitude towards Catiua. His backstory also touches this, claiming he'd sell his own mother if someone gets him on his hiring price.
  • Recurring Boss: Fought three times on the Chaotic route’s Chapter 2.
  • Restored My Faith in Humanity: In his ending scene, he admits that even his old and cynical heart has been given new hope for people as a whole after seeing what the current youth of Valeria are capable of accomplishing.
  • Route Boss: Played with; he’s always fought on Chaotic (and dies right before the Neutral branch), but he’s not an enemy on Lawful… unless you decline to recruit him. Then come Chapter 4 you can encounter him as an enemy in Golyat; the option to recruit him is again offered,so long as you bring down his health without killing him (refuse him again and he’ll need to be killed to complete the optional battle).
  • Token Evil Teammate: Downplayed in that he’s not remotely treacherous, but Xapan is otherwise the most morally-dubious of the game’s recruitable characters. The one route he’s available on both accentuates and contrasts this, with the others (and Denam himself) highlighting themes of forgiveness, redemption and atonement; Xapan on the other hand has no substantive arc, albeit his epilogue on the Princess ending at least suggests that fighting alongside Denam has invoked positive change in him.
  • You Have Failed Me: In the Chaotic route, at the Chapter 2 climax; after taking Catiua hostage and failing to kill Denam a third time, he flees into Almorica. Denam hurries after Xapan in time to witness Vyce, who hired him in the first place, cut the headhunter down for his failure.

    Ocionne Wyrmcaller

Ocionne Rabine (Oxyones Lavin)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ocionne.png
Voiced by: Mami Kingetsu (JP;Sega Saturn), Noriko Hidaka (JP;Reborn), Megan Hensley (EN;Reborn)

A Galgastani disciple of the Sea God Vasque who survived a purge of the enemies of Hierophant Balbatos. Her village was attacked by Jeunan's wyrmknights, and now lies in ruin. She's encountered in every route, but only recruitable if Jeunan is in the party.

  • Arch-Nemesis: She considers herself this to Jeunan, responsible for the massacre of her village. She sought revenge and attempted to kill Jeunan when they met. However, Denam can convince her not to do it and told her to stick with Jeunan just so she had a better chance to kill him, or see how much Jeunan has changed. She stuck with the second.
  • The Beast Master: She is a skilled dragon tamer.
  • Child Soldier: She's fifteen. This also literally makes her the youngest recruitable member of Denam's forces.
  • Defiant to the End: In the Neutral and Chaos routes, Reymos attacks Vasque and kills whoever was in the village in an attempt to add these people to his ranks of undead forces, with Ocionne being one of the last survivors and willing to go down swinging. Had Denam not come to her rescue, she would have shared the same fate.
  • Guide Dang It!: How to recruit her in the original. You have absolutely zero hints that she might pop up or she's even linked with Jeunan's past (at the very least, she appears in all routes in the remake despite not joining in Chaotic or Neutral). First you need to take Jeunan in the battle in the interior of Coritanae to learn hints about that past in Chapter 3. Then in Chapter 4, just have to get into a random battle Brumor Plains (Belmorose Highwilds) and put Jeunan into battle and then hope that Ocionne would pop up with her four Holy Dragons. Then you have to listen to all the dialogues between Jeunan, Ocionne and also Denam before lowering her HP to 10%. Nowhere else hinted her existence.
  • Little Miss Badass: She is fifteen and an accomplished Dragon Tamer.
  • Mutually Exclusive Party Members: She can only be recruited on the Law route. Thus she cannot fight alongside Cistina, Folcurt, Bayin, Cerya, Oelias, Dievold or Cressida.
  • Technical Pacifist: She will take to fight when necessary, but she absolutely hates violence, being that even the reason she refuses to join Denam in the Neutral and Chaos routes.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: She repays Denam for saving her from certain death by telling him to get the hell out of her sight and refusing to join him, based on her Technical Pacifist attitude and how she doesn't have the highest opinion on Denam bringing wars wherever he goes. Ironically, Denam can only make her avert this by being in the lowest point of his moral axis (in the Law route), because he can bring Jeunan with him; together, they can force her to listen to their stories of seeking redemption for their mistakes and make Ocionne relent.

    Fusilier Lindl

Jonathon Torgeaux Lindl (Rendal)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lindl.png
Voiced by: Daisuke Yokota (JP)

A young warrior hailing from the southern continent of Balboede who can be encountered and recruited in Chapter 4. He has trained in the use of the fusils made there and he journeyed to Valeria to purvey the sophisticated weaponry of his homeland.

  • Ascended Extra: Though not as much than before; Lindl's model is the basis for every Gunners/Fusiliers in the original game, and his death quotes are just like every other generic unit. In the PSP and Reborn versions, Fusiliers gain their own unique models, so Lindl's old model becomes exclusive only for him. Additionally, he also has his own quotes and personality.
  • Badass in Distress: He's a competent fusilier, but can't handle Martym and his Dark Knights all by himself.
  • Escort Mission: Lindl's is infamous for averting Artificial Stupidity in the original game by having him run towards Denam rather than try to fight Martym while devoid of all gear.
  • Guns Are Worthless: Averted - Guns can be pretty deadly even if they don't have the advantage of infinite range.
  • Optional Party Member: After you deal with Barnicia, you need to read an article in the Warren Report to enable the sidequest that allows you to recruit him.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Archers often deal more damage than his guns do. But in the first version of the game guns do have infinite range, which would be good if you get him out of range.
    • What also doesn't help is he joins very very late in the game, and in the PSP version he will be stuck with his class at level one when you're almost ready to beat the game.
    • Averted hard in Reborn where Archers were rebalanced with the Fusilier class even getting a new technique called Course Correction where they can ignore obstacles and guarantee a hit. With Lindl also coming leveled properly, it's really just a matter of preference with picking between him and Arycelle.
  • Pistol Whip: Melee attacks with him are this.

    The Mage Dagon

Dagon Simmel

Voiced by: Kotaro Shinohara (JP)

A Walister headhunter encountered as an enemy boss in the Chaotic route. He ambushes Denam as he passes through Golyat.

  • All There in the Manual: Like most minor bosses, a lot of his characterization comes from his Warren Reports entry.
  • Anti-Villain: He has no apparent animosity towards Denam but needs the bounty on his head to ensure his daughter can survive her illness.
  • Bounty Hunter: He's a researcher turned headhunter, going after bounties in order to afford medicine for his daughter.
  • Defector from Decadence: Downplayed. He used to be a member of the Walister army, but he defected because they didn't pay enough, not to a distaste for the Duke.
  • Healthcare Motivation: He only works as a headhunter in order to get money and be able to afford the medice that his terminally ill daughter needed to survive.
  • Reused Character Design: He uses the generic male Wizard portrait.
  • Route Boss: Only encountered on the Chaotic route.

    Headhunter Gannon

Berruk Gannon

Voiced by: Hiroaki Tajiri (JP)

A Walister headhunter encountered as an enemy boss in the Chaotic route. He tries to claim Denam's head in Port Asylon.

  • All There in the Manual: Like most minor bosses, a lot of his characterization comes from his Warren Reports entry.
  • Bounty Hunter: He used to work as a mercenary, but started to work as a headhunter once one of his employers got killed and couldn't pay him.
  • One Degree of Separation: He’s acquainted with Xapan, although he’s not so concerned with avenging him as the bounty on Denam’s head.
  • Red Baron: He's been nicknamed "The Violet Death", as a reference to the claim he's a bastard of a noble house, and purple is associated with nobility.
  • Reused Character Design: He uses the generic male Berserker portrait.
  • Route Boss: Only encountered on the Chaotic route.

    The Bandit Lobos

Lobos (Robos)

    The Wicce Sirene

Pirates

Consists of pirates encountered by Denam and his order.

    The Pirate Azelstan

Diego Galet Azelstan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/diego_galet_azelstan.png
Voiced by: Kenji Fukuda (JP), Frank Todaro (EN)

Another PSP newcomer. A legendary Galgastani pirate. In his younger days he was known to all who sailed the coastal waters of Valeria. He was greatly feared for the abandon with which he snatched away both cargo and lives. Then one day he took to the shore and disappeared. He is also known to have returned unscathed from the Pirate's Graveyard, a place that has claimed the lives of countless sailors.

  • Death Seeker: After the above, he went to the Pirate Graveyard, but felt it was for those "who went the full distance".
  • Drowning My Sorrows: The bottle seldom leaves his hand or mouth until he joins you.
  • Friend to All Children: The local kids in the port town he's found loitering in seem fond of him, one mute little girl in particular.
  • Guide Dang It!: Recruiting him is an involved process that's very easy to screw up if you don't visit each of the right checkpoints for his side quest early enough. Several of them give no indication the appropriate locations need to be visited, even.
  • The Gunslinger: His class is one of the few in the game that can handle firearms.
  • Pirate: His previous occupation. The unique Buccaneer class he unlocks brings the style of combat to Denam, Vyce, and Canopus as well.
  • The Musketeer: Handy with one-handed weapons of several varieties, crossbows, and, of course, one-handed firearms, all of which can be mixed and matched as needed. The trope's fighting style of choice is even his default set up as a guest and when first recruited.
  • Red Baron: Was known as the Dread Pirate Azelstan.
  • Secretly Dying: Diego doesn't tell Denam that he has a terminal disease until the war is over, when he is already on his deathbed.

    The Pirate Darza

Darza (Dasa)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/male_berserker.png
Voiced by: Isamu Yusen (JP)

A Galgastani pirate encountered as an enemy boss in Chapter 2 in both the Lawful and Chaotic routes. He's found at Qadriga Fortress trying to kill either Xapan (Lawful) or Bayin (Chaotic).

  • Abduction Is Love: His wife Veldrei was a noblewoman that he kidnapped after he raided the vessel she was in. There he learned she was actually trying to escape her noble life and he grew fond of her spirited nature and they eventually fell in love and married.
  • All There in the Manual: Like most minor bosses, a lot of his characterization comes from his Warren Reports entry.
  • Blood Knight: He enjoys a good challenge and likes when Xapan / Bayin can actually fight back.
  • Happily Married: He's happily married to Veldrei, a noble Bakram he once kidnapped in a raid. She now serves as his Number Two, watching over their stronghold in Ndamsa Fortress.
  • Horny Vikings: He's one of the pirate characters that make use of the Berserker portrait, likely for the horny helmet making him look like a viking.
  • The Leader: He's the leader of his own pirate crew that plunders all over the Obero Sea.
  • Only One Name: His surname is never mentioned.
  • Reused Character Design: He uses the generic male Berserker portrait.

    The Pirate Veldrei

Veldrei (Veldo)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/veldrei.png
Voiced by: Mari Doi (JP), Cherami Leigh (EN)

A Galgastani pirate encountered as an enemy boss in Chapter 2 in the Chaotic routes. She's Darza's wife and Number Two and is guarding Ndamsa Fortress in his absence.

  • Abduction Is Love: She was a noblewoman that got kidnapped by Darza after raided the vessel she was in. There he learned she was actually trying to escape her noble life and he grew fond of her spirited nature and they eventually fell in love and married.
  • All There in the Manual: Like most minor bosses, a lot of her characterization comes from her Warren Reports entry.
  • The Dragon: She's Darza Number Two in his pirate crew. Once he dies, she takes over the crew, if only so she can get her revenge.
  • Grudging "Thank You": If spared, she notes that she’ll remember both Denam's mercy and that he killed her husband. Her voice work in at least the English dub practically hisses on the word "kindness" to further sell it.
  • Happily Married: She's happily married to the pirate Darza, who kidnapped her in a raid. She now serves as his Number Two, watching over their stronghold in Ndamsa Fortress.
  • Mama Bear: She can be spared if most of her underlings are routed and she's brought down to low health, but she doesn't accept it due to giving up on her revenge or wanting to live, but for the sake of her unborn child.
  • Noble Fugitive: She got tired of the burden of her lineage and run away from her family. Then the ship she was in was raided by Darza, and the two ended up meeting and marrying.
  • Only One Name: Despite supposedly being a noblewoman, her surname is never mentioned.
  • Pregnant Badass: She's actually pregnant in her boss fight.
  • Reused Character Design: She uses the generic female Valkyrie portrait.
  • Route Boss: Only encountered on the Chaotic route.
  • Skippable Boss: Her battle is optional, but since it results in Cistina being Killed Offscreen if you don’t do it… In the Lawful route, she's not even mentioned at all by neither Darsa or Xapan, therefore you skip her by default there.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In the SNES/PSX version of the game she’s inevitably killed in the fight; the PSP/Reborn versions have it so if most of her men are killed and she’s brought down to critical health, Denam convinces her to survive if only for her unborn child’s sake.
  • You Killed My Father: She seeks vengeance on Denam for having killed her husband. Even if she's spared, she swears him he'll regret it someday.

    The Pirate Ragnar

Ragnar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/male_berserker.png

A Bakram pirate encountered as an enemy boss in Chapter 4. He attacks Azelstan over a petty dispute.

    The Pirate Barvan

Barvan (Bavan)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/male_berserker.png

A Bakram pirate encountered as an enemy boss in Chapter 4. He's using Gecho Fortress as his headquarters.

  • All There in the Manual: Subverted. He's one of the few bosses who doesn't get a Warren Reports entry.
  • Burial at Sea: His final words are to ask for his body to be throw at the sea as a "dry grave's no end for a pirate".
  • Horny Vikings: He's one of the pirate characters that make use of the Berserker portrait, likely for the horny helmet making him look like a viking.
  • Only One Name: His surname is never mentioned.
  • Optional Boss: He's an optional boss that's part of the Apocrypha sidequest.
  • Reused Character Design: He uses the generic male Berserker portrait.

The Palace of the Dead (Hell Gate)

Mysterious characters found within the Palace of the Dead.

    The Magus Rudlum

Robert Rudlum (Radlum)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rudlum.png
Voiced by: Hiroshi Tsuchida (JP)

A Warlock Denam stumbles upon while descending the Palace of the Dead. He joins while claiming to be looking for the Draconic Magic contained within the place. Nothing is known of his past.

  • Body Surf: If his death phrase is any sign, Abeleo might be doing this. Explains how Canopus and his Xenobian team failed to outright recognize him.
  • The Dragon: To Rashidi, who is the original game's Big Bad.
  • Legacy Character: He happens to be Abeleo, Rashidi's dragon from March of the Black Queen.
  • Mysterious Past: He discloses nothing about who he really is, for good reasons as Canopus' whole team would be pretty interested in killing him if they found out he is actually Abeleo.
  • Optional Party Member: You have to keep him alive in a battle on the second floor of the Palace of the Dead.

    King Rodrick

Rodrick Desmoria (Roderick Dezmoria)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rodrick_3.png
Voiced by: Takeshi Hirabayashi (JP)

The former King of Brigantys who fought King Dorgalua during the conquest of Valeria, but was vanquished. His spirit can be found lingering in the Palace of the Dead during the "The Search for Warren" CODA sidequest.

  • Demoted to Extra: While he wasn't a major player in the original game, his original role was to give Denam's party special moves that can only be learned in Palace of the Dead. This was altered in the PSP version.
  • The Good King: He has a just king during peacetime, but once Dorgalua began his conquest he started to rely on dark magic in order to win the war.
  • Superboss: His revenant form is an Optional Boss of the Brutal Bonus Level that is only accessible in the "The Search for Warren" CODA sidequest.
  • The Unfettered: In order to fight Dorgalua, he began to rely on the Dangerous Forbidden Technique of Apocrypha magic, which lay waste to both his enemies and his own people, and eventually turned Brygantys into a frozen wasteland.

    Xadoba The Enchanted

Xadoba (Zadova)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xadoba.png
Voiced by: Cherami Leigh (EN)

A Gorgon encountered as an enemy boss on the 3rd floor of the Palace of the Dead.

    The Mage Georges

Georges Sekendorff

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/male_necromancer.png

A necromancer encountered as an enemy boss on the 22nd floor of the Palace of the Dead. A new addition in the PSP remake.

    The Wicce Beelzebuth

Beelzebuth (Belzbute)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/beelzebuth.png
Voiced by: Hana Takeda (JP)

An underworld being encountered as an enemy boss on floor 41st and 74th of the Palace of the Dead.

  • All There in the Manual: Like most minor bosses, a lot of her characterization comes from her Warren Reports entry.
  • Ambiguously Human: It's unknown what she is, but if her dialogue is any indication she's some kind of demon from the Underworld.
  • Beelzebub: Her name "Beelzebuth" is an archaic variant of the name Beelzebub, presumably as the result of a phonetic translation without knowledge of the intended reference. The name is appropriate, given her ties to the undead and the implication she's some kind of demonic being.
  • Body Surf: She's merely using her current body as a vessel to explore the Palace of the Dead.
  • Casting a Shadow: True to her demonic nature, she mainly uses dark magic to devastate foes and even has access to the forbidden spell Death in the original game. The remake even adds necromancy to her arsenal of spells.
  • The Dark Arts: In the remake, she indulges in dark magic and necromancy to sate her twisted curiosities.
  • Eviler than Thou: Considers Denam and Nybeth this as they venture through the deeper floors of the dungeon, much to her delight.
  • Only One Name: Her surname is never mentioned.
  • Optional Boss: She's an optional boss of the Brutal Bonus Level.

    The Archmage Blackmoor

Blackmoor (Blacmore)

A Lich encountered as an enemy boss on floor 100th of The Palace Of The Dead after Nybeth has been defeated.

    Kandyce, Keeper of the Seal

Kandyce

    Allocer

Allocer

An immortal creature of darkness from the tome known as Goetia, possessing a female archer. She is actually based on Arycelle in the game's SFC/PSX version (where she was known as Aloser), where she was a notoriously powerful archer.

  • The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: Even in the SFC/PSX version, there is no way Aloser can shoot across the map even if she didn't have the high ground, let alone using a Short Bow. Allocer can do just that with just a Short Bow, it hits like a Finishing Move, and can kill a squishy unit in one shot.
  • Easter Egg: She is an acknowledgement of how powerful Aloser was, before she was given a considerable Nerf as Arycelle.
  • Superboss: She's not only surrounded with Level 55 enemies, she's got maxed out Ranged stat, starts out in far from you and yet can shoot across the map with a short bow and take out half of an armored unit's HP or kill off a squishy unit in one shot.

    Aym/Haborim

Aym/Haborim

An immortal creature of darkness from the tome known as Goetia, possessing a male Swordmaster. He is actually based on Hobyrim in the game's SFC/PSX version (where he was known as Haborym), where he was a notoriously powerful swordmaster who can stun or petrify enemies with ease.

  • Dub Name Change: His Japanese name is more blatant in referencing, as it's 'Haborim', instead of 'Aym'.
  • Easter Egg: He's an acknowledgement of how powerful Haborym was, before the Swordmaster class (and Hobyrim as a result) was nerfed in the PSP version and buffed in the Reborn version, but nowhere as broken as the original incarnation.
  • Superboss: He's surrounded with Level 55 enemies, and possessing maxed out Physical stat, and he also possesses Double Attack like ninjas. And he specifically wields Daggers so he has a light weight to move faster. Additionally, he can execute the old combo of 'petrifying opponent army en masse' by having both Petrifog and Spellstrike.
  • Taken for Granite: He specifically has both Petrifog and Spellstrike to emulate the old tactic of Haborym being given the spell Petrify and using his absurdly high Dexterity to score high success rate.
