The Xenobian Exiles

A group of characters who were banished from Xenobia and reduced to mercenaries. Actually on a secret mission to retrieve the holy sword Brynhildr.

    The Holy Knight Lanselot

Lanselot Hamilton (Lans Hamilton)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lanselot_hamilton.png
Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (JP;Sega Saturn), Shuhei Sakaguchi (JP;Reborn), Ben Prendergast (EN;Reborn)

A Xenobian born in the city of Valna in Charlom who formerly captained the Holy Knights of the Kingdom of New Xenobia. He came to Valeria to recover the sword Brynhildr at the behest of King Tristan of Xenobia. He joined the Walister Resistance after aiding Denam in freeing Duke Ronwey. He was garrisoned in Rhime when the Bakram invaded and went missing thereafter.

  • Ascended Extra: Lanselot is the first character you get in March of the Black Queen and after the first battle with Usar, he just lost his importance. In this game, he's a very central character even if he's not playable until CODA 3.
  • Doomed by Canon: It was stated in the canon ending of March of the Black Queen that he would be killed in action. As Let Us Cling Together is the sequel to this game, it appears to be a contradiction. However, its cruelly subverted as Lanselot doesn't actually die; he instead gets tortured until he becomes a shell of his former self who Denam later finds in a hospital, not reacting to anything except his wife's music box, which causes him great emotional distress. Death may have been a kinder fate, and most likely that's why the Xenobian survivors (Canopus, Mirdyn, possibly Gildas) just reported him dead, reporting his fate as is would've brought a great grief for King Tristan.
  • A Fate Worse Than Death: Lanselot is horribly tortured by the Lodisians offscreen after being captured. Near the end of act 4, Denam finds him in a hospital where it is revealed he has been reduced to a shell of a human being, the only thing that brings any reaction out of him is the sound of his child's music box, and that reaction is one of abject terror. He remains that way for the rest of the story, and his fellow Xenobians are forced to return home without him. In the (presumably non-canon) Coda, Denam does gain the power to go back in time to attempt to save him from ever being captured, which adds him to your roster.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: In the purest sense.
  • Player Punch: Deliberately invoked. In the end of the game, it is revealed that he was tortured physically and mentally, to the point of being disfigured and entering a catatonic state. He only reacts to the music box of his dead wife - and by screaming with agony when hearing the song, since it was used to torture him by Tartaros.
  • Shock and Awe: Lanselot's elemental affinity in Reborn is Lightning. His personal weapon, the Lombardia, also has Lightning affinity in Reborn, although it had Air affinity in the PSP version.
  • What If?: What if Denam wasn't so powerless at Rhime, and could have actually saved Lans from his inevitable fate? This is explored further in Coda; Denam manages to intervene in his battle with Barbas and creates a new timeline where he stuck with Denam after the Rhime Massacre. Not only that, but the end result also even suggests it was Lanselot himself who suggested Denam to visit Xenobia after the Heim War.

    The Star Seer Warren Omon

Warren Omon (Warren Moon)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/warren_omon.png
Voiced by: Kenyuu Horiuchi (JP;Sega Saturn), Takaya Hashi (JP;Reborn), Alastair Duncan (EN;Reborn)

A mysterious master magus and diviner, the former ruler of the island northeast of Charlom, where the Xenobian Rebellion got its start. After the Xenobian Rebellion, King Tristan promoted Warren to lead the New Xenobian Mages Regiment. He came to Valeria with the Holy Knight Lanselot to recover the sword Brynhildr at the behest of King Tristan of Xenobia. He joined the Walister Resistance after aiding Denam in freeing Duke Ronwey. After being grievously wounded during the Bakram invasion of Rhime, he recuperated at Almorica. He saved Denam when the Chaos Gate collapsed during a momentous battle at the Hanging Gardens, but was himself trapped.

  • The Archmage: Warren can cast basically anything; not that you can use this power very much, due to his lack of Arcana when he first shows up and his limited availability afterwards.
  • Casting a Shadow: Warren's preferred element as a guest in the original game and the PSP remake was Darkness. Reborn references this by giving him the Sleep spell to supplement his Sparksphere spell, even though he never uses it.
  • Doomed by Canon: The canon ending to March of the Black Queen reported that Warren went Missing in Action after the epilogue.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He teleports Denam's party back out of the Chaos Gate they were pulled into before sealing it, leaving him trapped on the other side. The second CODA averts the trope and has Canopus and his friends deciding to search for Warren with some clues about the Palace of the Dead having another Chaos Gate, and Denam decides to tag along. Canopus hits the jackpot and manages to find his friend... just as he's fighting King Rodrick, who suffered the same fate as Dorgalua. Although it's up to debate how canon the Second Coda is.
  • Non-Action Guy: Doesn't get on the front lines of the story, preferring to coordinate and manage things instead.
  • Playing with Fire: Warren's elemental affinity in Reborn is Fire instead of Darkness, and he has the Sparksphere spell while he's a guest.
  • Shock and Awe: Warren's Darkness magic in the PSP version is supplemented by the Lightning Bow spell.
  • Wizard Classic: Has a big ol' beard, is one of the oldest cast members, and serves as a wise and level-headed advisor to the others.

    Canopus, the Wind Caller

Canopus Wolph (Canopus Wolff)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/canopus_wolph.png
Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue (JP;Sega Saturn), Yuichi Nakamura (JP;Reborn), Chris Cox (EN;Reborn)

A Xenobian from the city of Peshaval in Charlom who once captained the Beast Legion of the Kingdom of New Xenobia. He came to Valeria with the Holy Knight Lanselot to recover the sword Brynhildr at the behest of King Tristan of Xenobia. He joined the Walister Resistance after aiding Denam in freeing Duke Ronwey from his imprisonment at Almorica Castle. Since then, he has accompanied Denam. He appears young in years, as winged folk live to thrice the age of men.

  • Berserk Button:
    • Deneb herself is a Berserk Button given form for him.
    • Calling him any form of bird, especially a duck, is a sure shot way to get his undivided attention and fury.
    • Messing with his friend Gibald, or even his newfound friend Denam, is another sure-fire way to provoke him.
    • Last and not least important, you do not fuck around with his sister Iuria. Do just that, and Canopus will make sure your life ends at the following minute.
  • Blow You Away: Constantly associated with the element. All his special moves in the original are Wind-attuned.
  • Crutch Character: As a Hawk-Man, Canopus is locked into being only a handful of the beginner classes and his tier-two Vartan class. His mobility makes up for this, but his power ceiling is a bit lower than that of most other characters, particularly the other plot-important ones.
  • Deadpan Snarker: A big-time snarker, shown from the start. Toned down in the remake; but not without adding more snark, such as his bickering with Vyce.
  • Disc-One Nuke: He's going to be one of the most powerful characters early game, and his niche never really goes away.
  • Minor Major Character: Canopus arbitrarily joins Denam's party halfway into Chapter 1, unknowingly giving up his Plot Armor in doing so. He sometimes talks in cutscenes afterwards, but he won't appear in them if he's dead, and the Wheel won't indicate that he had lines in them.
  • Only Sane Man: He tends to have a more levelheaded outlook than many others in the game. When Ravness's half Galgastani blood is revealed in the final battle of chapter 1 if you side with Leonar, Denam is initially horrified, but Canopus reminds him that one can't control their heritage which calms Denam.
  • Older Than They Look: Since the Hawkmen race live longer than men this gives him an interesting personality dynamic since he is a teenager by his species' standards and has the young and energetic personality but also the life experiences of a 48 year old. This helps him serve as the Older and Wiser companion to Denam.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: And he sure looks attractive.
  • Winged Humanoid: A rare variation of his species. In the original, his class is the Eagle Man, while all generics were Hawkmen.
  • Uniqueness Decay: His unique Vartan class is made available to all Hawkmen in Reborn.

    Sir Mirdyn

Mirdyn Walhorn (Mildain Walhorn)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mirdyn_walhorn.png
Voiced by: Masaki Aizawa (JP;Sega Saturn), Keiichi Nakagawa (JP;Reborn), André Sogliuzzo (EN;Reborn)

A Xenobian born in the Dalmuhd city of Konsch who once served with the Holy Knights of the Kingdom of New Xenobia. He is a man of few words. Womenfolk hoping to be wooed by the handsome warrior are left disappointed, as he can manage little more than a smile. Gildas and Mirdyn are as chalk and cheese. Mirdyn always survives the attack on Rhime and rejoins Denam's battalion on all routes in Chapter 3.

  • Casanova Wannabe: Earned his reputation easily. Doesn't show much of it in battle... That is, until he gets to face and threaten Barbas.
The original version of this threat: "You know, you should really be worried about yourself before you start worrying about me. Otherwise your face will get so ugly that you won't be able to attract the bitches in Hell!"
  • Knight in Shining Armor: His appearance and initial class is that of a White Knight.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue for Gildas.
  • Those Two Guys: Best buddies with Gildas and is rarely apart from him.

    Sir Gildas

Gildas W. Byrne (Guildus W. Burn)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gildas_w_byrne.png

Voiced by: Kazutoshi Naba (JP;Sega Saturn), Masayuki Akasaka (JP;Reborn), Adam Croasdell (EN;Reborn)

Another Holy Knight from Xenobia (precisely, Xandu in the Highlands), who sticks around with Mirdyn. Likes drinking and women. He usually survives the attack on Rhime and joins Denam's battalion... Except in the Neutral route where he's killed and zombified by Nybeth Obilord, forcing Denam to kill him.

Other Xenobians

    The Wicce Deneb

Deneb Rove (Deneb Rhobe)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/deneb_rove_0.png
Voiced by: Mami Kingetsu (JP;Sega Saturn), Fumi Hirano (JP;Reborn), Catherine Taber (EN;Reborn)

A Xenobian of unknown origin who once served with the Mages Regiment of the Kingdom of New Xenobia. She was a principal architect of the kingdom's establishment. Her thirst for arcane knowledge is boundless, and she has come to Valeria to gather funds to further her studies. She created a band of pumpkin servants to help with her shop, but they felt unfairly treated and rebelled against her. She brought them to heel with the help of Denam and went on to join the Resistance.

  • Bad Boss: She is very much against the idea of paying fair wages to her workers, which causes one of her Pumpkinheads to rebel.
  • Black Magician Girl: To be expected from a magic specialist. In the original she can access all elemental magic except Holy.
  • Body Surf: It's heavily implied that she jumps from one body to another to survive, with Canopus laying this accusation at her in the remake and her trying to deny it. The method of recruiting her in The Knight of Lodis and her death quote in the PSP remake prove otherwise, though.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: The description for her unique class is written in the first person, as if she were the one speaking rather than a nebulous narrator.
  • Casting a Shadow: Her secondary magic element in the PSP remake is Dark magic. Reborn even has her elemental affinity change from Fire to Dark if she's recruited as a Wicce.
  • Cute Witch/Hot Witch: Deneb straddles the line between the two, depending on the game and artwork.
  • Fiery Redhead: She's one in Let Us Cling Together and Person of Lordly Caliber. In March of the Black Queen and The Knight of Lodis, she's blonde.
  • Impossibly-Low Neckline: Being a custom design of the standard Enchantress class, she doesn't have a Classy Cravat to conceal her cleavage. It's a wonder she doesn't spill out of it when taking a breath.
  • Legacy Character: Although it's very probable that she's the same witch across all Ogre Battle games.
  • Leg Focus: Her outfit leaves her legs bare, and her idle animation in her shop has her crossing and uncrossing them in a "Basic Instinct" Legs-Crossing Parody.
  • Nerf: In Reborn she loses access to powerful Draconic and Summon Magic spells in her unique Wicce class. She can still swap to Shaman and excel as a caster there, but sans the traits that make her unique.
  • Optional Party Member: The most optional character of the game, as getting her involves buying tons of content from her secret shop in Chapter 4 and then offering to recruit her. In the PSP remake, you also have to go through a small sidequest with her. In both versions, gathering Glass Pumpkins from the Palace of the Dead and selling those to her before recruiting her gives either better gear in the SFC/PSX versions, or her unique Wicce class in the PSP remake. This was mercifully streamlined in Reborn where all you have to do is upgrade Relics three times at her shop.
  • Parts Unknown: Played With in that she is Xenobian, but where exactly in Xenobia isn't specified.
  • Playing with Fire: The element she's associated with in the original release is Fire, with it being her primary element in the PSP remake and her innate elemental affinity in Reborn if she's recruited without going through the extra steps to unlock the Wicce class.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Deneb and her sidequest are some of the only levities in an incredibly bleak game about war.
  • Say It with Hearts: In the original release of the game, but not the PSP remake and Reborn.
  • Secret Art: Like the ninjas unique throwing stars command, she uses "Rail Against" to attack distant foes instead of throwing rocks, an attack that scales off her Magic attack rather than her Ranged.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: To Canopus, whom she annoys the ever-living hell out of.
  • The Tease: She likes to act flirtatiously with people, apparently both to get a rise out of them and to get them to do what she wants.
  • Vague Age: It's not confirmed how old she is, not helped by her possibly making new bodies as backups. But she's certainly old, considering she can potentially be encountered in The Knight of Lodis.

    Punkin the Bewitched

Punkin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/punkin_the_bewitched.png

One of the golems created by the Wicce Deneb to aid her in her work. Punkin soon emerged as their leader due to her aggressive nature. She started life as a pumpkin, but took on human qualities through her strong desire to be treated fairly. Blamed for the banditry carried out at an abandoned village, she fought Denam and was defeated. In the end she was allowed to take over Deneb's shop. She does brisk business, but has trouble keeping up with payments to Deneb and the other workers. She does appear to be enjoying herself, at least. Apparently she was taught the secret of becoming human by a sage she met in the Palace of the Dead, but she will say no more on the subject. In her spare time she busies herself growing pumpkins and perfecting her recipe for pumpkin pie.

  • Baby Talk: Her syntax and manner of speech are very simplistic and childlike. The English dub of Reborn even has her voice actress speak as if she were a child.
  • Evil Twin: Is visually and all but functionally identical to Deneb, complete with her unique Wicce class (and in fact, if one fails to unlock it for play themselves, she's the only indication that such a thing exists). She also takes over her shop once you recruit, conveniently requiring no new sprites be drawn. Only their personalities and voices differ (and even both of those only stray so far).
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Even moreso than her master.

    The Songtress Iuria

Iuria Wolph (Yulia Wolff)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iuria_wolph_5.png
Voiced by: Nao Tōyama (JP), Erin Yvette (EN)

Another addition to the PSP version of the game. A songstress and sister to Canopus, she comes to Valeria to perform and ends up possessed by a Wicce in the Pirate's Graveyard. She joins her brother and Denam's team once she is rescued by them.

  • Ascended Extra: She was just an NPC in March of the Black Queen who becomes part of the steps to recruit Canopus, and even when she's encountered again, Canopus forbade her to join Destin's group. She becomes playable in the PSP version of this game.
  • Demonic Possession: By the Wicce Sirene.
  • Idol Singer: She has become a rather famous singer in the time between March of the Black Queen and Let Us Cling Together.
  • Magikarp Power: It takes a near full trip through the San Bronsa Ruins to get the most out of her, but if equipped properly and given the right songs, Iuria becomes an unparalleled healer and support character, particularly in Reborn, where instruments come with 5 free uses of a given song.
  • Practically Different Generations: At eighteen, she's a full thirty years younger than her brother, though it's downplayed since their race lives so much longer than humans that Canopus is basically a teenager with Iuria being a slightly younger teenager.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She is the only female hawkman depicted in the entire game. Explained in-universe (as part of her Warren Report) that while winged womenfolk generally don't like to be seen in public, Iuria in particular seems to like the attention.
  • Spoony Bard: Her initial class the songstress provides buffs and debuffs. Some like Ardent Conga are very useful while others not so much.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She gives one to Canopus and Denam for freeing her from Sirene's possession, as Sirene was actually quite lonely and Iuria kept her company.
  • Winged Humanoid: Like brother, like sister.

    The Saint King Tristan

Tristan Pheryx Xenobia (Tristan Zenobia)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tristan_8.png
Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa (JP)

The high king of Xenobia after a long, arduous war to reclaim the land from the Xyteginea Empire. He sent Lanselot Hamilton and his team to Valeria officially as 'exile', but it turns out he has a secret mission for them.

  • Big Good: For the Xenobians. They operate under his command, although he's mostly unseen by the cast in the present day.
  • The Cameo: He only appears in either the optional cutscene explaining the Xenobians' true purpose and the second bad ending, where Gilbald reported Lodis' full scale invasion on a Denam-ruled Valeria. Naturally, because he's got a kingdom to manage when everyone else are doing their jobs in Valeria.
  • The Good King: He's a well-loved ruler by his people and the neighboring kingdoms respect him. A natural upgrade from his old The Wise Prince self.

    Gilbald Skygazer

Gilbald Oblion (Gilbert Oblion)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gilbald.png
Voiced by: Hiroshi Tsuchida (JP)

A Beastmaster from Xenobia's Charlom district and best friend of Canopus and Iuria. After the war to reclaim the land from the Xyteginea Empire, Gilbald followed the liberation army leader Destin Faroda to Palatinus and being involved with the struggles there. He returned safe and sound to become Tristan's advisor.
