    The Seekers

Ujurak

A mysterious grizzly bear who Toklo meets on his journey. He can shapeshift and has a mysterious voice in his head which tells him to save the wild. Even he doesn't understand his origins, as he forgot his past. He guides the other bears on their journey.

  • Cub Hero: He is a cub when the series starts.
  • Disney Death: Survives a charge that he thinks will end his life. But then the avalanche happens.
  • Interspecies Romance: He becomes quite attracted to Sally... and then turns into a bear in front of her.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: His memories from before he met Toklo disappeared for no explained reason. Although he does later get them back.
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: He has to struggle to retain his identity as a bear when he shapeshifts into other animals.
  • Morality Pet: To Toklo, who sees caring for him as a way to atone for Tobi's death.
  • Naked First Impression: With Toklo when he was in human form and Maria. He seems to have learned, as he puts on some clothes before he goes to rescue Lusa.
  • Non-Action Guy: He prefers not to fight until Spirits in the Stars, that is.

Toklo

A grizzly bear on the quest to save the wild. He was rejected by his mother Oka and became bitter because of it, but he eventually accepts his traveling companions as friends.

  • Archnemesis Dad: His dad was the Big Bad of his manga spinoff.
  • The Atoner: At first, he only cares for Ujurak to atone for Tobi's death.
  • Babies Ever After: He has a daughter with Aiyanna, and they named her Oka (after his mother).
  • Big Brother Instinct: He always keeps a lookout for Ujurak and Tobi... but it's revealed that Toklo is actually Tobi's younger brother.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In The Last Wilderness, when he shows up out of nowhere to save Kallik and Lusa from a helicopter.
  • Buried Alive: In Island of Shadows, but his friends save him.
  • Conscience Makes You Go Back: Around when he first meets Ujurak in The Quest Begins, Ujurak turns into a salmon from excitement, so Toklo abandons him after he saves him from two adult bears. But guilt gets the best of him as he checks to see if Ujurak is okay, and he decides to stick with the younger cub until he can take care of himself.
  • Cub Hero: At the start of the series he is just a cub, probably around the human equivalent of 9-13.
  • A Day in the Limelight: While already a main character, his manga spinoff, Toklo's Story focuses entirely on him.
  • Deadpan Snarker: It's pretty much his default mode, always having a witty response to someone else's idea.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: In Fire in the Sky, when a star bear tells him that one of his friends will die.
  • Easy Amnesia: He gets amnesia for two minutes in Island of Shadows.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Whenever he wants to leave the group, he is seen as wrong. At the end of Island of Shadows, he finally completely accepts the group.
  • My Greatest Failure: The death of Tobi and Ujurak's death.
  • Papa Wolf: Despite not being a father or a wolf, he is really protective of Ujurak and Nanulak.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: When he was a cub, as he took on Shoteka, a bear much bigger than him.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: His friends get very worried about him when he stops being angry in Island of Shadows, so they're very happy when he starts acting grumpy again.
  • Screw Destiny: One of the reasons he leaves the group with Lusa in Fire in the Sky is to try and prevent the death of one of his friends that the Star Bear told him about.
  • Sibling Rivalry: A one-sided one with Tobi.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: He makes it very clear that he doesn't like killing in cold blood, and he's disappointed in Nanulak for making him a hitman against his own father.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Downplayed. He's still rather obtuse at times, but he's accepted his travelling partners for who they are, and he's become a bit more idealistic.
  • The Unfavorite: He was neglected by his mother in favor of Tobi.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Until the very end of Island of Shadows, Nanulak plays him like a violin.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Tobi.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Water until he gets over it in Great Bear Lake.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Despite all of his efforts to prevent it, one of his friends still ends up dying in Spirits in the Stars.

Lusa

A black bear who lived in the zoo until she found out about the wild and journeyed there. She joins the quest to save the wild.

  • Action Girl: When she's not busy being kidnapped, that is.
  • Babies Ever After: She has cubs with Miki at the end of The Longest Day, a son named Yogi (named after her zoo friend Yogi) and a daughter named Ashia (named after her mother).
  • Big Damn Heroes: She gets one in The Burning Horizon, saving a young girl from the angry Jerkass coyote.
  • Brainy Brunette: Though not entirely brown (having black fur instead), she's a clever little bear.
  • Caught in a Snare: She gets trapped in an ice hole in Island of Shadows. Nanulak leaves her to die there but she survives.
  • The Chosen One: Chosen to save the wild and by the bears of Star Island.
  • Cub Hero: She's the youngest of the main four cubs at the start of the series. She has the most "cubbish" look.
  • Damsel in Distress: Often, but most notably in Fire in the Sky.
  • A Day in the Limelight: While already a main character, she'll be getting one in her manga Lusa's Tale.
  • Determinator: In The Quest Begins she will not let anything stop her from finding Toklo.
  • Disney Death: In Spirits in the Stars, when she gets shot.
  • The Heart: She's the one keeping the band together, and the one who brought them together in the first place.
  • I Will Find You:
    • Towards Toklo in The Quest Begins.
    • Towards Toklo again in Island of Shadows when he gets lost in a mine.
  • Naïve Newcomer: She used to live in a zoo, so her ideas about the wild are a little... off to say the least.
  • Only Sane Man: Sort of. In Island of Shadows, she is the first one to realize that there's more to Nanulak than he says.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • In Smoke Mountain, where she becomes moody after having been told to save the wild by her family in her dream.
    • Again in River Of Lost Bears, where she's really upset over Chenoa's death and acts angry.
  • Raised in Captivity: Having spent most of her cubhood in a zoo, Lusa has to get used to the wild quickly. She sometimes acts in a manner deemed "un-bear-like" even to Ujurak. Lusa doesn't have the same fear of humans that most other bears have.

Kallik

A polar bear from the Frozen Sea. When her mother was killed by an orca and she was separated from her brother, she vowed to find him. Eventually she joins the quest to save the wild.

  • An Ice Person: As with real-life polar bears, she loves ice and snow. She's even surprised that snow is a sign of starvation and death to brown and black bears when polar bears see it as a sign of food and good times.
  • Babies Ever After: She has two cubs with Yakone at the end of The Longest Day, two sons named Chulyin and Suka.
  • The Big Guy: She's the largest and strongest of the three bears.
  • Cub Hero: As with the others, she's just a cub when the series starts. She hasn't even been to land yet.
  • Claustrophobia: She can't stand tight spaces, as seen in The Last Wilderness.
  • It's All My Fault: After getting into a fight with Toklo in Fire In The Sky, she dares him to go ahead and catch a seal over very thin ice. When Toklo nearly drowns and is rescued by Ujurak becoming a beluga, she scolds herself for putting her friend in danger.
  • I Will Find You: Towards Taqqiq in The Quest Begins and Great Bear Lake.
  • Large and in Charge: When she takes the lead in Fire in the Sky.
  • Mama Bear: Is very protective of her adopted son Kissimi in Spirits in the Stars. In The Melting Sea, Lusa thinks she's becoming too much like this, but Toklo explains that her past may explain her protective behavior.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Lusa's tomboy.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Seals. Truth in Television, since a polar bear's top prey is seals.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Kallik scolds Toklo for almost getting Lusa killed during a bison hunt. It was by accident, though.

Yakone

A polar bear from Star Island who falls in love with Kallik. After the death of Ujurak, he joins the traveling bears.

  • Agony of the Feet: He gets some of his front toes chopped off by a trap in River Of Lost Bears.
  • Babies Ever After: He eventually becomes the father of Kallik's sons, Chulyin and Suka.
  • Meaningful Name: Due to the tinge of his fur, his name means "red aurora" in Inuktitut.
  • Naïve Newcomer: He often needs to have things explained to him on the journey.
  • Took A Level In Cynicism:
    • He goes through this in parts of Forest Of Wolves, where he feels that he can't help Kallik because of being crippled by the bear trap. In fact, his cynicism actually makes Kallik give up on him at one point. Fortunately, Lusa helps him snap out of it and gets him and Kallik to make up.
    • He goes through it again in The Longest Day, much worse than two books before.

    Temporary Team Members

Taqqiq

Kallik's brother, who goes missing during the events of The Quest Begins. Kallik's determination to find him was what set her on her quest.

  • Freudian Excuse: He fell in with the wrong crowd after being orphaned.
  • Heel–Face Turn:
    • He goes through one in Great Bear Lake, calling Salik out for being a bully.
    • He goes through another one in The Melting Sea after Kallik screams at him for murdering harmless families, something he admits he didn't really do. He sticks to it this time.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: A really well hidden one in Great Bear Lake and beyond.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: After Toklo tells him about Ujurak's powers, he tells Toklo "What... are... you... talking about?" as if he was stupid.
  • Put on a Bus: He decides to leave the group in Smoke Mountain due to seeing himself as only causing unwanted conflict.
  • The Sixth Ranger: Albeit one who leaves almost immediately.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Between The Quest Begins and Great Bear Lake.
  • Walking Spoiler: Although it's not as much as it seems.

Kissimi

A polar bear cub from Star Island. After his mother dies, Kallik adopts him.

Nanulak

A pizzly bear from Baliff Island. Because of his mixed heritage, he was driven off by his family and attacked by evil polar bears. When he meets the journeying bears, they agree to protect him and he becomes friends with Toklo. There's much more to him than meets the eye.

  • Big Bad: Of Return To The Wild.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He has a very thin layer of "sheep", but the bitch underneath is much bigger than it seems.
  • Disney Villain Death: In The Longest Day, he falls off a burning building after trying to kill Toklo in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes style and cracks his head on a rock.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: He wants to kill his parents because he is caught between being a polar bear and a grizzly bear.
  • Easily Forgiven: But he rejects it.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He asks Toklo why he won't help him kill his father, asking if that's what friends so. Toklo is furious that he can't even see what he did was wrong.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Ujurak
  • Faking the Dead: Both of his parents thought he was dead.
  • Fantastic Racism: He hates polar bears and flat-out says at one point that they should all be wiped out. His attitude towards Lusa hints that he also doesn't like black bears along with polar bears.
Nanulak: You're only a black bear!
  • Freudian Excuse: Sure he's a Jerkass and distrusts bears that aren't grizzlies, but that comes from his horrible parents and the polar bears who want to kill him. Or so he says.
  • Never My Fault: Even after the bad things he had done, he had accused Toklo of always hating him. Toklo even tells him to stop blaming others for his own problems.
  • Obviously Evil: Definitely, but he's even more evil than he seems.
  • Older Than They Look: He may look like a cub, but he's nearly the same age as the traveling bears. He abuses this to no end.
  • Patricide: His plan amounts to using Toklo as essentially a hitman in order to kill his father.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: He loathes polar bears and seems to dislike black bears too.
  • Self-Serving Memory: He keeps telling Toklo in The Longest Day that he and his friends hated him and left him to die. He leaves out the real reason, which was hiring Toklo to be a hitman to kill his father.
  • The Scrappy: Kallik and Lusa see him as this In-Universe. The fans agree.

Chenoa

A young female black bear in River Of Lost Bears who is daily abused by her older brother Hakan. Fortunately, Toklo invites her to come with them, and she agrees.

  • It's All My Fault: Belives she caused her mother to die. Hakan blaming her did not help.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Chenoa finally joins the Seekers on their journey... only to be killed off with a blow to the head in a few more chapters.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She scolds Toklo for eating human food and says he shouldn't be right about everything. But Toklo snaps back that it was her who roared at him to stop, alerting the humans nearby, though he stops when he thinks that his behavior reminds her strongly of Hakan.
