Pádraig Mac Piarais

    United Kingdom
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flag_of_the_united_kingdom.png
Official Name: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Ruling Party: Conservative Party
Ideology: Social Conservatismnote
After the end of Great War, Britain was hit deeply with crisis. Entente alliance almost dissolved due to revolutions and coups in countries like France and Russia; Burma became independent, and India fell into civil war - this is truly the end of British dominance. Now, Britain must drag itself back from the brink of death to reinstitute sanity across the world
  • Enemy Mine: The UK recognized Socialist Germany upon its birth in revolution against the German Empire in order to win WWI.
  • Everyone Has Standards: The British are justifiably disgusted and horrified by Churchill's brutal rule in India upon discovering the extent of the atrocities he committed. However, they may still choose to cover them up in order to peacefully reintegrate Churchill's India in the British empire.
  • Only Sane Man: Britain views themselves this, as they are one of the few remaining countries that has not fallen under Accelerationism or Communism. They are also the only country in Europe that has no insane paths, since all their paths revolve around fairly normal ideologically democratic parties coming to power through democratic elections and then fulfilling their agenda within the limits of law and constitutional order.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Their victory in the Great War this as the following years saw the weakening of the British empire, with the loss of most of Ireland, its failures in West Africa and Mesopotamia, and the collapse of the British Raj.
  • The Scapegoat: For the loss of India, the Whigs blame then-prime minister F. E. Smith while the Tories blame David Lloyd George.
  • Shocking Defeat Legacy: The loss of India, the crown jewel of the British empire, was a heavy blow for the United Kingdom, some even proclaiming it the end of British imperialist conquest. Since then the UK was forced to concede much autonomy to its dominions and was abandoned by former allies.

Role: Prime Ministernote  (Election)
Party: Labour Party
Ideology: Liberal Socialismnote

  • Covered in Scars: Mosley has scars from the Great War.
  • Dark Horse Victory: The victory of Mosley is noted to be a surprise in the news event announcing it due to successfully unseating the two major British parties, Tories and Whigs, to form the next government.
  • Historical Hero Upgrade: In the Red Flood timeline, Mosley never became a fascist and continued being a Laborite MP.
  • Pacifist: Mosley's foreign policy is described as such.
  • Red Baron: He is nicknamed Black Lightning in the teased news event announcing his victory.

Harold Macmillan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_eng_supermac.png
Role: Prime Ministernote  (Election)
Party: Liberal Party
Ideology: Social Liberalismnote

  • Graceful Loser: If Mosley wins the election, Macmillan will take the defeat with dignity and express wishes for further collaboration between Liberal and Labour.

Western Europe

    Avant-Garde France
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/escadron_flag.png
Flag of the Acéphale Territory of France
Flag of Gaul Úr
Official Name: Artistic State of France
Ruling Party: Front National de l'Avant-gardenote
Ideology: Futurismnote
After their failure in the Great War, France was thrown into chaos as its unstable Liberal Democracy collapsed onto itself. Street battles became commonplace and crushed any sense of peace. The masses demanded justice for the dead and the post war youth rejected reactionary traditions. While the Reactionaries - led by Action Française - took power, it was too late, as the economy collapsed following the shockwaves of the 1931 Crash. From this chaos, Antonin Artaud - Le Patron of the Front National de l'Avant-Garde - rallied the masses and seized power. Now France is led by a radical new ideology, driven on by two needs: Speed and Revenge. For its tropes, see the dedicated France subpage.

    Netherlands
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flag_of_the_netherlands.png
Official Name: Kingdom of the Netherlands
Ruling Party: Liberale Staatspartijnote
Ideology: Classical Liberalismnote
Although not a direct participant, the Netherlands would end up being hit by the great war as many other nations did. In the end, they stayed as a liberal democracy, avoiding the revolutions that fell upon France and Germany, and also annexed Flanders.

Wilhemina

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_wilhemina.png
Role: Queennote
Party: Liberale Staatspartijnote
Ideology: Classical Liberalismnote

    Walloon Free State
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/drapeau_officiel_de_la_wallonie.png
Official Name: Walloon Free State
Ruling Party: Parti Libéral Chrétien - Centrenote
Ideology: Social Liberalismnote
After the conclusion of the great war, Belgium was split and fractured due to the horrors that took place in its land. In the north, Flanders was annexed by the Netherlands, while the South, Wallonia, gained independence. Now, they must make sure they stay that way, while the French eye them hungrily.
  • Balkanize Me: The Walloon Free State is the result of the dissolution of Belgium after WWI, with Flanders being annexed to the Netherlands.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Wallonia will generally be annexed by France barely a year after the beginning of the game.

François Bovesse

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_wll_francois_bovesse.png

Iberia

    Spanish Republic
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tno_spanish_republic.png
Flag of the Spanish People's Republic
Flag of the Spanish Republic (Caballero)
Official Name: Spanish Republic, Spanish Socialist Federation (Díaz, Spanish Civil War), Spanish People's Republic (Communist), Revolutionary Collective in Iberia (Hernandez)
Ruling Party: Partido Republicano Nacionalnote
Ideology: Constitutional Dictatorshipnote

  • Assassination Attempt: The King Alfonso XIII was assassinated during the 1930 Jaca Revolution after he refused to concede defeat to the Revolutionaries.
  • Civil War: Spain always falls into a three-way civil war between the Republican government, the anarchist Iberian Communes and the accelerationist National Front.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: The liberals and socialists who make up the Republicans have difficulty working together against their common enemies, the National Front and the anarchists. In an event, José Díaz slams down a list of files on Alejandro Lerroux's desk, demanding to know why the latter's men are attacking the former's.

Ramón Franco

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_spr_ramon_franco.png
Role: Presidentnote
Party: Partido Republicano Nacionalnote
Ideology: Constitutional Dictatorshipnote

  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: By the time the Spanish Civil War begins, Ramón Franco vanishes into the wild, never reappearing again on the Spanish political scene.

Alejandro Lerroux

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_alejandro_lerroux_8.png
Role: Minister of Interior (Franco cabinet), Presidentnote  (Franco succession)
Party: Partido Republicano Radicalnote
Ideology: Social Nationalismnote
Alejandro Lerroux is not the kind of man to compromise or tolerate. Deeply rooted in old Jacobin politics, the Partido Republicano Radical has found many enemies among communists and separatists, and many allies among Spanish nationalists and dissatisfied rightist republicans.
  • Cult of Personality: Perhaps as a way to make up for the destruction of the church, Lerroux builds a cult of personality of himself that is heightened to the point that he is practically positioned as a replacement for God. To hit the nail on the head, one event even shows a group of his supporters coming to a town to take down the public altar, removing the crucifix and replacing it with a photo of the President himself.
  • Hollywood Atheist: Downplayed. Lerroux is violently anti-clerical and does his best to demolish all public places of worship in Spain, but his regime isn't state atheist and he permits freedom of religion as long as it is done in private.
  • Meaningful Rename: Under Lerroux, members of the Young Spaniards youth group take a new name after famous figures representing the PRR's values.
  • Patriotic Fervor: Lerroux wants a republic of Spanish patriots, inspired by French Jacobinism.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: A focus of Lerroux's teased focus tree shows he and the PRR consider homosexuals as "vermin", at least partially due to perceived connection between them and the clergy, whom Lerroux loathes.
  • Principles Zealot: Lerroux is known for not compromising with his opponents.

Fernando de los Ríos

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_spr_rios.png
Role: Presidentnote  (Republican Post-Civil War election)
Party: Partido Socialista Obrero Españolnote
Ideology: Democratic Socialismnote
Fernando de los Ríos has succesfully lead the moderate wing of the PSOE against all odds, proposing a humanist socialism that has found unexpected supporters among liberals and other less radical republicans who hope for a true progressive and democratic Spain.
  • Internal Reformist: De los Ríos is a moderate and humanist socialist seeking to reform Spain into a truly progressive and democratic country.

José Maria Hinojosa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_spr_hinojosa.png

Party: Agrupación al Servicio de la Repúblicanote , Partido Republicano Nacionalnote  (Ortega reelected)
Ideology: National Liberalismnote
José Ortega y Gasset leads the ASR, a platform of many intellectuals who believe Spain needs a true British liberalism in order to be a modern country. Although not very popular among the masses, Ortega has found himself as one of the most well-known liberal republican theorists.

Francisco Largo Caballero

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_spr_caballero_6.png
Role: Presidentnote  (Ortega in power, Snap elections)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_jose_diaz_1.png
Role: Presidentnote  (Communist coup)
Party: Partido Comunista de Españanote
Ideology: Leninismnote

  • The Coup: Díaz and the communists come to power through a coup during the Spanish Civil War.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Díaz's death leads to the choice of a new leader determining the path Communist Spain will take.
  • Short-Lived Leadership: Due to his ill health, Díaz does not get to lead Spain long after leading the Communists to victory in the Spanish Civil War.

Miguel Hernández

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_hernandez.png
Role: Presidentnote  (Communist Futurist coup)
Ideology: Futurismnote

  • The Coup: When the parliament gathers to choose a new leader after José Díaz's death, Hernández leads a group of armed supporters to interrupt the meeting and force them to appoint him the new President.

Ramón Gómez de la Serna

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_spa_ramon_gomez_de_la_serna.png
Role: Country Leader
Party: Movimiento Regeneracionistanote
Ideology: National Rejuvenatismnote

  • Reluctant Ruler: Gómez de la Serna, a man utterly incapable of taking any interest in politics, is chosen to lead the National Front exactly because this also means that he's above any and all factionalism, and looks visibly confused and lost as his friends proclaim him the Nationalists' leader.
  • Richard Nixon, the Used Car Salesman: Invoked. Gómez de la Serna, an avant-garde writer and dramatist with little involvement in politics in real life, is the leader of the National Front here. His utter disinterest in politics is precisely why he is chosen as the leader of the Nationalist Front, as he is not affiliated to any faction within the Front and can serve as a unifying figure.

Flag of the Republic of Portugal
Official Name: Kingdom of Portugal
Ruling Party: Integralismo Lusitanonote
Ideology: Reactionary Populismnote

  • Caligula's Horse: The first event to happen when playing Portugal shows the newly elected mayor of Gato. It is a catnote  named Frederico.
    "Such a lovely little guy."
  • The Conspiracy: The main source of opposition to the monarchy comes from the Sidonists plotting against the government.
  • The Exile: Sidónio Pais, briefly President of Portugal, has been in exile in Fiume since he was overthrown in a coup.
  • Historical Downgrade: Unlike in our timeline, where he was the dictator of Portugal, António de Oliveira Salazar is just the leader of the right-wing Centro Católico Portugês party.
  • Rightful King Returns: A successful example, unlike France. In the 20's, a coup was carried out against the democratic government which ended with the Integralists taking power and restoring the monarchy under Francisco José I (the younger brother of the pretender to the throne Prince Miguel, Duke of Viseu).

Apennine Peninsula

    Kingdom of Italy
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tno_italy.png
Flag of the Italian Federation
Official Name: Kingdom of Italy, Socialist Republic of Italy (socialist puppet), Revolutionary Republic of Italy (Ricci)
Ruling Party: Partito Democratico Italiano Unito - Sinistranote
Ideology: Social liberalismnote

  • Abdicate the Throne: If Nitti becomes Prime Minister of Italy, King Victor Emmanuel will eventually abdicate and become just another citizen of the Italian Republic, to the tearful celebration of his people who welcome him and his heir as two more citizens of their own.
  • Civil War: The Kingdom of Italy and Fiume (the Italian Regency of Carnaro and Upper Dalmatia) will eventually go to war to settle who will be Italy's legitimate government.
  • Corrupt Politician: The ruling Partito Unito Democratico Italiano is plagued by corruption and cronyism.
  • The Empire: By 1936, the Kingdom of Italy is one of the largest empires in the world, having massively expanded its territory by seizing French Equatorial Africa after the Great War. If Luigi Sturzo doesn't come into power, Italy will try to launch further wars of conquest to take over most of Europe as well.
  • Won the War, Lost the Peace: Italy may have gained massive colonies in Africa from the Great War, but they're worse than useless due to them being in a state of near-constant guerilla warfare with the native Africans.

Ivanoe Bonomi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ita_ivanoe_bonomi.png
Role: Prime Ministernote
Party: Partito Democratico Italiano Unito - Sinistranote
Ideology: Social Liberalismnote

  • Crisis of Faith: While events question whether Bonomi is refusing to cede power to a conservative regime as part of the usual arrangement his party has with the conservatives as part of some kind of power play, his original motivation is simply that he fears Italy has given up a true democracy in the name of stability and he feels the people deserve to truly decide their own fates rather than oligarchic power brokers.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Boenomi leaves office shortly after the game starts.

Francesco Saverio Nitti

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rf_francesco_nitti.png
Role: Prime Ministernote  (Bonomi succession)
Ideology: Social Liberalismnote

  • Bait the Dog: Nitti's initial focus tree involves rebuilding Italian society, cleaning up its internal problems and equalizing various parts of the country while fighting organized crime. His second focus tree involves anti-colonialism, striking down racist laws and offering full citizenship to every part of the Kingdom's oversees territories, mass military reforms, and full enfranchisement of the population, culminating in the Federation's transformation into a full republic with the king's willing abdication. Then, after Nitti has spent such a long time making himself likable, it turns out that his struggles against accelerationism and socialism have hardened him, that a boiling temper was waiting under his seemingly calm surface, as he unveils his Fifteenth Point and the final branch of his focus tree, where Italy, having been reforged by his reforms into a potent war machine, begins the mass conquest of all the authoritarian and/or socialist regimes of first Europe, then the entire world, in an effort to forcibly defeat what Nitti sees as the enemies of liberty on the field of battle rather than waiting for them to "inevitably" come to him.
  • Foreshadowing: During Nitti's initial speech describing his platform after election, his Fifteen Points, a reporter in the audience thinks that he only counted thirteen or fourteen. This is because, twice, his focus tree opens up new branches, culminating in his Fifteenth Point; proactive military invasion of much of Europe.
  • Hypocrite: With a stunning lack of self-awareness, Nitti enforces his own idea of liberty on other countries by waging massive wars to subjugate them (and in some cases, outright annexing them into Italy), no matter how democratic Germanynote  and France actually are. He can also easily end up in a dust-up with the United Kingdom, whether because he picks a fight with someone they're guaranteeing or simply because he considers their brand of colonialism just as bad as the accelerationists, socialists, and reactionaries he fights.
  • Knight Templar: Nitti genuinely believes that he's liberating Europe from the tyranny of accelerationism, reactionism, and socialism (no matter how good or bad his targets actually are) when waging his massive wars of conquest that will likely lead to millions of deaths. In his defense, many of his targets can indeed potentially be fairly brutal regimes, and by the time he does it he will have already fought off at least one attempt by the League Solar to help the accelerationists in Fiume take over the rest of Italy.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Although a bloodthirsty imperialist, Nitti is the among the most moderate of the various leaders who seek to conquer Europe, as he only wishes to protect so-called liberty and combat what he perceives to be 'radicalism'. Instead of building totalitarian dictatorships like fellow would-be conquerors, Italy will instead build a Treaty of European States consisting of liberal puppets.
  • Politically Correct Villain: While Nitti has many anti-heroic qualities, racism isn't one of them. He solves Italy's crisis in its African possessions by treating the natives with respect and guaranteeing their religious freedom, ensures they all enjoy full citizenship while repealing all racist laws to ensure all Italians are equal under the law, and part of his eventual fanatic crusade is anti-colonialism.
  • Precision F-Strike:
    • A few points further down his second focus tree involve steadily more profanity, such as describing the Italian army as "fucking pitiful. Just fucking pitiful," at the start of the military reform section.
    • When Nitti reveals the final point in his 15 Points program, journalists notice that his everyday restraint and moderation are gone, replaced by a furious determination, as he proclaims:
For too long, the forces of reason and liberty have sat idle in this poor, benighted continent. Brutally emasculated by defeat after defeat, by a slavish attachment to peace and civil order, we liberals have failed. We have all failed, and look at the consequences! Fucking madmen squatting in Paris, violating our great city, the beating heart of the Revolution! Damned commies tread on the bones of Frederick, Goethe, Blum, and the heroes of Frankfurt! Everywhere liberty is outraged, equality is perverted, fraternity is despised. This will not stand!
  • War Hawk: Nitti is a fanatical anti-accelerationist and anti-communist who seeks to 'liberate' the whole of Europe from radicalism through bloody conquest.

Luigi Sturzo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ita_luigi_sturzo.png
Role: Prime Ministernote  (Bonomi succession)
Ideology: Social Conservatismnote

  • Only Sane Man: Sturzo is the only leader of Italy that does not plan on conquering all of Europe unlike Nitti or Balbo.
  • Real Men Love Jesus: Sturzo is an Italian catholic priest and a possible leader for Italy.

Italo Balbo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_ita_italo_balbo.png
Role: Prime Ministernote
Party: Lista Nazionalnote
Ideology: Constitutional Dictatorshipnote

  • Master Race: Balbo believes in the Italian people's supremacy and right to rule over the rest of Europe.
  • The Remnant: With Benito Mussolini having fled to San Marino after the failed March on Rome, Balbo leads the Lista Nazionale, which consists of what remains of the National Fascist Party, now seeking to undermine Italian liberal democracy from the inside.

Flag of the Italian Combine
Flag of the Empire of the Ponente
Official Name: Italian Regency of Carnaro and Upper Dalmatia, Italian Combine (Marinetti, Italy conquered), Italian National Republic (Keller, Italy conquered), Empire of the Ponente (Shimoi, Italy conquered)
Ruling Party: Consiglio degli Ottiminote
Ideology: Fiumanismnote
Officially known as "the Italian Regency of Carnaro and Upper Dalmatia," this country is the incubator of political Futurism and the starting point of Accelerationism as a modern political philosophy. The former Austro-Hungarian city of Rijeka was established as a "Free City" on the Dalmatian coast to help solve the border disputes between Italy and Yugoslavia. However, Gabriele d'Annunzio saw this capitulation of ancient Italian territory as a massive insult to the Italian soldiers who had lost their lives in the Great War, and on the 11th of September, 1919, led an attack with several hundred armed followers and easily conquered both the city and its environs, with the end goal of having the new state annexed into the Kingdom of Italy. Due to a combination of d'Annuzio's massive popularity with the Italian public and near-simultaneous socialist and Accelerationist revolutions in Hungary and Yugoslavia respectively, the Italian government saw Fiume as a useful buffer state and let it become d'Annuzio's personal plaground. Fiume has become a haven for artists and political theorists the world over, being a bizzare democratic, corporatist, and localist chimera of a nation that perfectly showcases just how mad the world has gone since the Great War.
  • City of Adventure: Fiume is the swamp from which Accelerationism was spawned, and due to being technically under siege by the Yugoslavians for most of its existence, had its government primarily consist of various intellectual groups who treated the newborn country as a petri dish for them to test out their ideologies.
  • Civil War: No matter who succeeds d'Annunzio, Fiume will eventually go to war with the Kingdom of Italy to settle who will be Italy's legitimate government.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: They were intended to serve as a glorified buffer state in the east for Italy along with being a good place to send all of the crazies the Italian government couldn't be bothered to handle. Fiume can become an major power in its own right, to the point of brutally conquering its parent state and subjecting the Italian public to whatever its new leader's particular brand of crazy Futurism is tickling their fancy that week.
  • In Name Only: invoked Legally speaking, Fiume is recognized as an autonomous state under the control of the Kingdom of Italy. In practice, Fiume is completely independent.
  • Land of One City: Downplayed; while the place is colloquially referred to as just "Fiume" since that's the name of its capital city, the country of Fiume has its territories comprise several small portions of the former Austro-Hungarian empire, being centered around the former corpus seperatum of Rijeka and also containing most of upper Dalmatia.

Gabriele d'Annunzio

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_fiume_gabriele_dannunzio.png
Role: Country Leader
Party: Consiglio degli Ottiminote
Ideology: Fiumanismnote

  • Founder of the Kingdom: He is the "Comandante," the man who founded Fiume and has ruled his crazy little alliance of city-states for roughly 26 years.
  • King on His Deathbed: By 1936, d'Annunzio's age is finally catching up to him, and various factions began plotting to secure power in his absence.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Soon after the game begins, d'Annunzio dies, making way for either Marinetti, Keller or Shimoi to succeed him.

Filippo Tommaso Marinetti

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_fiume_filippo_marinetti_1.png
Role: Country Leader
Ideology: Futurismnote

  • Richard Nixon, the Used Car Salesman: In real life, Marinetti was a poet, artist, and Father of Futurism, who founded the Futurist political party in Italy. Here, he is a politician and can actually turn his artistic philosophy into his country's ideology.
  • War Is Glorious: Among others, Marinetti's Futurists want to glorify war as the only cure for the world.

Guido Keller

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_fiume_guido_keller_8.png
Role: Country Leader
Ideology: Fiumanismnote

  • Kicked Upstairs: If Harukichi Shimoi takes power, Keller will be 'promoted' to a suitable post in order to shut him up.
  • Token Good Teammate: Out of the three potential heirs to d'Annunzio's Fiume, Keller is the only one who seems to be concerned about social progress for the average citizen and has the tamest path in terms of foreign policy. Fittingly enough, the unification event if he takes over Italy calls him the “Lesser of all possible Evils”.

Harukichi Shimoi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_fiume_harukichi_shimoi.png
Role: Country Leader
Ideology: National Rejuvenatismnote

  • Cultural Chop Suey: Shimoi's Empire of the Ponente is an eclectic mix of Italian nationalism and Japanese principles of hierarchy and authority.
  • Cultural Posturing: While he's a massive fanboy for Italian culture, he's still very proud of his Japanese heritage, instituting a strictly ascetic lifestyle inspired by bushido for the citizens of Fiume to prepare them for the conquest of Italy.
  • Foreign Culture Fetish: As in real life, he's a Japanese man fanatically obsessed with Italian culture.
  • Historical Villain Upgrade: Shimoi was already a rabid fascist in real life, but here can become a deranged militaristic dictator of first Fiume and then all of Italy.
  • Red Baron: After taking power, he is simply referred to as the "Despota Orientale" (Oriental Despot).
  • Richard Nixon, the Used Car Salesman: Downplayed; in real life, Shimoi was a poet and writer while also being a major supporter of d'Annunzio in the "Fiume Endeavor." Since in Red Flood, the Fiume Endeavor worked, he's now a prominent actor in the Fiume government.

  • Commie Nazis: Mussolini is still a fascist, but tries to court the left, instead of dealing with reactionaries like in real life.
  • The Coup: After the failed March on Rome, Mussolini and his loyalists decided to overthrow the government of San Marino instead, since Italy's government was too hard. This actually worked, but now he's stuck in San Marino as a minor nuisance to the Italian government.
  • Historical Villain Downgrade: The fascist dictator of Italy in our timeline, his March on Rome failing resulted in him taking over small city of San Marino and becoming a minor nuisance to the Italian government, even less so than the accelerationists in Fiume are.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Mussolini fled Italy after it became clear that his whole 'just walk in and take it' plan wasn't going to work.

    German Socialist Räterepublik

Flag of the Free German Social Republic
Flag of the Volksrepublik Germania
Official Name: German Socialist RäterepublikTr., German Socialist ArbeiterrepublikTr. (Radek), Free German Social Republic (Goebbels), Volksrepublik GermaniaTr. (Reventlow)
Ruling Party: Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlandsnote
Ideology: Democratic Socialismnote

  • Allohistorical Allusion:
    • Socialist Germany produces "Sauerkraut Westerns", much like how the Soviet Union made "Red Westerns" in the interwar era or how the GDR did in the Cold War.
    • The Warschauer Vertrag (Warsaw Treaty) has the exact same logo and shares a similar name to the OTL Warsaw Pact, although the former is actually this TTL's COMECON.
  • Arch-Enemy:
    • Both the German Socialist Räterepublik and the Kingdom of Prussia claim to be the rightful German state, and the very existence of one is a challenge to the other's legitimacy. That being said, Prussia is an Unknown Rival to the German Socialists in the grand scheme of things since Germany has bigger fish to fry given that they share borders with multiple openly hostile neighbors (i.e., France and Austria).
    • To Avant-Garde France, with the Front National de l'Avant-Garde rising in power in France largely in part due to them fanning the flames of the Red Scare.
  • Balkanize Me: If defeated by France, Germany will be divided into two states: the Danubian Federation covering Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria and a German puppet state in what is roughly modern day North Germany.
  • Chummy Commies: The German Socialist Republic at the start of the game is quite democratic, with little to no despotism. They can end up as the Only Sane Man of Western Europe if Reventlow does not take power.
  • Former Regime Personnel: Some high-ranking members of the German high command served as commanders in the First World War before joining the socialists before, during and after the German Revolution.
  • Historical Downgrade: Ernst Thälmann, one of the most prominent historical German communists in the mod's time frame, is only a military commander with minimal political involvement.
  • The Remnant: Hidden cells of nationalists, loyal to Adolf Pölzl, lie in wait in Bavaria. As soon as they receive orders from Vienna, they'll rise up and join the "real" German Republic.

Paul Levi

  • 0% Approval Rating: Levi's controversial attempt to normalize post-revolutionary German society damaged his popularity heavily with opponents on both the left and the right simultaneously accusing him of betraying the ideals of the revolution. As the 1936 Reichsrätekongress gets underway, Levi is forced to retire, beginning the campaign to choose a successor.

Ideology: Spartakismnote

  • Allohistorical Allusion: In OTL, Frahmnote  served as the chancellor of West Germany from 1969-1974. Here, he can take power earlier through different circumstances.
  • Young and in Charge: Frahm was born in 1913, and is potentially one of the youngest leaders in the world.

Paul Joseph Goebbels

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_ger_joseph_goebbels.png
Role: Premiernote  (Election)
Party: Deutsche Sozialrepublikanische Partei (Heckerisch)note
Ideology: Social Republicanismnote

  • Historical Hero Upgrade: In the Red Flood timeline, Goebbels throws his fanatical dedication and his work as a master propagandist into the flames of the socialist revolution, thus staying true to the left-wing beliefs he held before joining the NSDAP. His regime, while authoritarian and nationalist, does not commit any genocide and isn't antisemitic at all, unlike Reventlow's.
  • Faction Motto: Goebbels' Social Republicanism uses the motto "Freiheit, Gleichheit, Brüderlichkeit" (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity), emphasizing its links to the romantic ideals of 19th century revolutionaries, inscribed on the flag of Germany after he takes power.
  • Irony: Goebbels, a famous Nazi in our world, is murdered by Reventlow in Red Flood's world for being opposed to his wing's antisemitic and ultranationalist ideals.
  • Patriotic Fervour: Goebbels's aim is to revive the spirit of 1848 and the March Revolutions of Germany in the people, and help them march Germany towards socialism and glory that way.
  • The Philosopher King: Goebbels is an avid reader of philosophy and derives the rationale for his actions from the works of German Idealists, claiming that his political project represents the completion of the German Idealist system.
  • Romanticism vs. Enlightenment: Strongly on team Romanticism - Goebbels frequently invokes the legacy of German romantic literature and philosophy. While this allows Germans to celebrate their patriotism without chauvinism, and successfully builds on the legacy of the German Revolutions of 1848, it has bad consequences in other areas; one event describes a mob of revolutionary youth burning down the Institute of Sexual Sciences, accusing it of "enslaving love under labcoat tyranny".
  • With Us or Against Us: In the speech at the climax of his focus tree, Goebbels denounces all his opponents as reactionaries.

Ernst Graf zu Reventlow

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_ger_ernst_zu_reventlow.png
Role: Premiernote  (Election)
Party: Deutsche Sozialrepublikanische Partei (Widukindisch)note
Ideology: National Vanguardismnote

  • Commie Nazis: Reventlow syncretises German Volkisch ethnonationalism with the socialist republic's institutions, believing that the German race is naturally predisposed towards collectivism. His policies include ending what he sees as the "philosemitism" of the social-democrats and replacing the council system with his own dictatorial rule. All in all his state can be described as a form of National Socialism that is genuinely socialist.
  • Cult of Personality: Much like Hitler in our world, Reventlow portrays himself as the messianic saviour of the German people from internationalist degeneracy and Jewish christianity.
  • Putting on the Reich: Reventlow hosts a swastika on his flag and much of his focus art is derived from Nazi propaganda, while one of his events refers to him as a "Führer".
  • Red and Black Totalitarianism: Reventlow's Volksrepublik Germania proudly flies a flag where a gold swastika is placed on a black background inbetween two red stripes.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After entrenching power Reventlow does away with his former authoritarian socialist allies that he thinks are no longer necessary to his cause. Karl Radek is arrested, and Joseph Goebbels is murdered.

Karl Radek

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_karl_radek.png
Role: Premiernote  (Election)
Party: Kommunistische Partei Deutschlandsnote
Ideology: Leninismnote

  • Irony: The irony of a Polish Jewish communist cooperating with German nationalists is not lost in the mod.
  • Patriotic Fervour: Radek aims to use the revolutionary energy of nationalist movements to aid the communist cause.
  • Taking Up the Mantle: Radek succeeds Vladimir Lenin as the leader of the communist faction in Germany after his death.
  • Truth in Television: Radek did actually advocate for cooperation between German communists and right-wing nationalist dissidents in the years after World War One, even going so far as to praise Freikorps personnel who resisted the French occupation of the Ruhr.

Karl Popper

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/portrait_ger_karl_popper.png
Role: Premiernote  (Election)
Party: Alte Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlandsnote
Ideology: Liberal Socialismnote

  • Alohistorical Allusion: A right-wing split of the SPD called the Old Social Democratic Party of Germany existed in OTL as well.
  • Dark Horse Victory: Popper's election victory is unlikely and shocks the international community if it happens.
  • Internal Reformist: Popper pursues a course of reform to transform the revolutionary socialism of the GSR into what his party sees as a more rational and humane system, going in the same direction but further than Levi's reforms.
  • Richard Nixon, the Used Car Salesman: OTL Karl Popper was a philosopher. Here he became a politician and can become premier of Germany.

Vladimir Lenin

Role: Leader of the KPD
Party: Kommunistische Partei Deutschlandsnote
Ideology: Leninismnote

  • Achey Scars: Lenin sustained wounds during the Hungarian Revolution that never truly healed, contributing to his hailing health and eventual death.
  • The Exile: After being expelled from the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party by Alexander Bogdanov in 1907, Lenin went in exile in Switzerland then in Germany, where he became involved in revolutionary activities and played an important role in the success of the German and Hungarian Revolutions.
  • Start My Own: In 1928, Lenin broke from the SPD, accusing them of being "revisionists", and founded the Communist Party of Germany with his followers.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: After his expulsion from the RSDLP and his exile in Switzerland, Lenin never went back to his Russian homeland.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Lenin dies a few weeks after game start.

  • Internal Reformist: Karl shares his uncle Franz Ferdinand's reputation as a reformist. Subverted as he is actually a despotic ruler.
  • Short-Lived Leadership: Should he die in the assassination made on him during his coronation, his reign would've lasted only a month.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: Should Karl survive the assassination attempt, he will turn the empire into an absolute monarchy.

Role: Emperornote  (Karl I assassinated or Mises route)
Royal Titles: List
Party: Kaiserlich-Königlich Kreisenote
Ideology: Constitutional Monarchynote

  • Abdicate the Throne: If Adolf Pölzl wins the power struggle, the Emperor will be forced to abdicate as the German Republic is declared.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: He becomes Emperor lacking the years of preparation that could've made him a decent ruler, instead initially delegating power to his ministers.
  • Meaningful Rename: Otto von Habsburg is given the regnal name Franz Joseph II to deliberately evoke his great-great-uncle Franz Joseph I.
  • Try to Fit That on a Business Card: If Mises successfully unifies Germany and takes over the Balkans and Central Europe, Franz Joseph II will become the king or duke of 12 different countries in typical Habsburg fashion.
  • You Are in Command Now: Karl's assassination places him at the helm of Austria much too early in his life, being unprepared for his new position.

Party: Alldeutsche Heimat-und Volksparteinote
Ideology: National Democracynote

  • Action Politician: Pölzl becomes available as an in-game general in his path after completing the focus "Das Führerprinzip".
  • The Assimilator: Pölzl believes that Czechs and Slovenes are actually Germans who strayed from their path and became convinced that they are actually Slavs, something that must be 'corrected' with the strongest hand possible.
  • Good Hair, Evil Hair: Instead of having his signature mustache, Pölzl keeps his old WWI-era mustache to emphasize that he is vastly different from his Real Life counterpart.
  • Historical Villain Downgrade: In this timeline, while still a racist right-wing politician, Pölzl is nowhere near the extent of his real life counterpart, due to a lack of both his real life homeless stint in Vienna and service in the military of the German Empire during the Great War.
  • Mama's Boy: The main point of divergence for Adolf is his mother (Klara Pölzl) was able to detect her cancer at an earlier date and survived after a successful mastectomy. This in turn insures that he does not go homeless later on in life, and due to this, he fails to encounter the radical National Socialist rhetoric present in Vienna. As well, his desire to stay home and protect his mother leads to him serving in the Austrian Landwehr instead of the Deutsches Heer as in our reality.
  • Nom de Mom: Unlike his real life counterpart, Adolf has taken his mother's surname, Pölzl.
  • Patriotic Fervor: Pölzl's goal since he was a young man has been to defend his people's soil from all who would attempt to take it.
