Hibiki Amami

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hibiki_chan.png
"Everyone, alive or dead, shares a bond through the same feelings. And through my sixth sense, I can confirm those bonds are real."

Voiced by: Ibuki Kido (anime) / Aya Endo (drama CD)
A socially awkward high school girl and second-generation spirit medium.
  • All-Loving Hero: Even to people afraid of her, or the Grumpy Old Man.
  • Ambiguously Gay: While her feelings for Narumi are often shown as those of a smitten school girl, she expresses them very ambiguously.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Hibiki is undeniably beautiful and cute, expressing this trope very well.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Has a non-action version of this trope. Hibiki will help every single ghost she crosses paths with, bringing them offerings of food or clothing, helping them find lost belongings, and so forth. Unfortunately, this behavior can drive her to the point of utter exhaustion.
  • For Happiness: Her main motivation for tending to all the ghosts.
  • Friend to All Living Things... and all dead things too.
  • Generation XEROX: Mostly a carbon copy of her mother Yuuhi, but less powerful, slightly taller, more well-endowed, and with a slightly different hair color and style.
  • Heroic BSoD: After losing her spirit sense after meeting her mother, resulting in Sense Loss Sadness. Overcome with The Power of Friendship.
  • Hime Cut: With slightly messy bangs.
  • I See Dead People: Her principal power, and the one around which the entire story revolves.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Downplayed due to her blushing at the thought of sensitive topics, but still present to a degree.
    • At the New Year's festival in episode 7, Kana, Kyouko, and Makoto try to get a drunk Narumi to answer sensitive questions. Hibiki is eventually convinced to ask her something as well, but her question is whether Narumi will still be friends with her in spite of her paranormal quirks.
  • In the Blood: Inherited her sixth sense from her mother.
  • Nice Girl: Always nice to everyone, to an extreme sense.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Justified due to her powers. If everyone else saw ghosts like she did, she wouldn't seem anywhere close to as awkward.
  • Weirdness Magnet: Ghost and spirits follow her around all the time, and she frequently gets sidetracked helping them out. Episode 12 implies that ghosts need to be near Hibiki in order to affect the real world.
  • Willing Channeler: Of the Kogal Spirit, for around a week.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Hibiki is graceful and polite, with a traditional hairstyle.
    • Kenta has this to say after Hibiki gets a flip phone (in contrast to her friends' smartphones):
Kenta: Well, Amami-san seems like she came out of the Meiji era! I pictured her doing laundry by hand on a washboard!

Narumi Inoue

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/inoue_san.png
"It wasn't a ghost, it wasn't a ghost, it wasn't a ghost..."

Voiced by: Miku Itō (anime) / Haruka Tomatsu (drama CD)
A caring, dark golden blonde tsundere high school girl who's easily scared.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Her attitude towards Hibiki often comes off as romantic instead of platonic.
  • Blank White Eyes: Whenever she flies into a panic because of ghosts, which is often, and when she flies into a panic because of Hibiki and romance, which is also often.
  • Doting Grandparent: Her grandma apparently doted on her when she was alive. Now Grandma watches over her as a ghost.
  • Drunken Glow: Gets one in episode 7 after drinking some amazake. Kana seizes the opportunity to ask her who she loves and looks up to; her answer is always "Nana". By the time the others persuade Hibiki to ask her something, the Drunken Glow has worn off in favour of Blush Stickers.
  • Luminescent Blush: When Hibiki flusters her.
  • Tsundere: Towards Hibiki in particular, but she's also a platonic Tsundere towards people like the ghost children and the Kogal Spirit. It's frequently lampshaded.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Though she's initially adamant that there's no such thing—despite ample evidence to the contrary—ghosts and their antics freak her out. For obvious reasons, this presents a problem.

Kyouko Esumi

  • Childhood Friends: Her relationship with Kyouko.
  • The Gadfly:
    • She revels in snapping photos of Narumi getting scared by ghosts.
    • Twice during the Beach Episode: she first has Hibiki choose between a few revealing swimsuits, which audibly turns the latter's face red, and then puts seashells on a napping Kenta's face, resulting in two ridiculous seashell-shaped tan lines around his eyes.

  • Intrepid Reporter: In training. Does amateur photojournalism, which she posts on her paranormal blog.

Voiced by: Eri Yamazaki (anime) / Ayana Taketatsu (drama CD)
An excitable brunette who dedicates her time to hand-sewing plush zombie dolls.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She mainly lives in her own reality, oblivious to nearly anything even if it's right in front of her.
  • The Cutie: Smallest and cutest of the group.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Loves zombies, to the point of sleeping with an army of small multi-colored zombie dolls, and considers them cute.
  • Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: Constantly trying to innocently brighten her friends' days... with her creepy, haunting skinless zombie dolls.
  • Shipper on Deck: Ships the Roll-Call Samurai and Kogal Spirit, much to their anger, as well as Hibiki and the Bound Soul.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/otouto.png
"I'm the only guy in the group! I've got a harem! Yahoo!"

  • Cranial Eruption: Often ends up with a roughly baseball-sized welt on his head; see immediately below.
  • Dope Slap: The repeated victim of what is better described as a Dope Punch.
  • The Ditz: Very much so.
  • The Fool: Ditto.
  • Irony: Makes his Tanabata wish to always be surrounded by lovely women... which has already been fulfilled to a degree.
  • Keet: Perpetually loud and enthusiastic.
  • Moment Killer: Occasionally ruins a ship moment between Hibiki and Narumi.
  • Sweet Tooth: Loves sweets, especially chocolate, to a very high degree.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: He and his other brother are nearly identical except for their height. Includes Hereditary Hairstyle.

Voiced by: Wataru Hatano (anime) / Shin-ichiro Miki (drama CD)
Hibiki's gentle father, a man terrified of ghosts. Widower of Hibiki's mother Yuuhi.
  • Disease Bleach: More accurately, Fear Bleach. The constant fright that came from dealing with Yuuhi's ghostly encounters turned his hair white in less than a week.
  • Good Parent: A very good single dad widower that treats his daughter with the utmost care.
  • House Husband: Introduced and sometimes portrayed as this.
  • Love at First Sight: Fell for Yuuhi within moments of meeting her.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: He's a college professor, so of course he wears glasses.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Like Narumi, he's extremely afraid of ghosts. As he fell in love with and married a medium—and now has another medium for a daughter—this presents a bit of a problem.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kimura.png

Ero-neko

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ero_neko.png

  • Shipper on Deck: Constantly shipping Hibiki and Narumi.
  • Super-Deformed: In contrast to the other, more realistically-drawn cats on the show, Ero-neko is a perpetual chibi. Given how he's a somewhat supernatural entity, it's Justified.
