    Magne

Magne Seier

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_2292_1.JPG

Portrayed by: David Stakston

Magne is the protagonist of the series. After moving back to his hometown with his family, Magne receives superhuman powers.
  • Accidental Aiming Skills: The hammer he hurls across town in a rage at the end of the pilot episode just happens to end up in the driver's seat of Vidar Jutul's car after smashing through its windshield. Said car was one and a half kilometers away and almost certainly out of Magne's sight at the time. He probably wasn't even consciously aware of where he was facing when he threw the thing, but he still gets into some trouble because of course no one believes him that it was an accident.
  • Accidental Murder: He really didn't mean to kill Vidar, and no-one, not even the remaining Jutuls, are hit harder by it than Magne himself.
  • Ambiguous Disorder: Magne has something, which could be ADHD or maybe a degree of autism. He is shown to have had problems with aggression in the past and uses a stim toy to focus. The only clear diagnosis we hear is that he has dyslexia.
  • Badass Boast: When he points out the impossibility of Isolde having been killed by a lightning strike, the cop he's talking to patronizingly asks him who knows more about the weather: the meteorologists, or him. Magne's answer is a blunt "Me", and given his powers it's highly likely that he's right.
  • Berserk Button: Messing with his family and injustice seems to trigger his anger issues.
  • Big Eater: Oh yes.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Towards Laurits.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: Torn between his loyalty to his brother and his duty as a god.
  • Dating Catwoman: There's some serious Belligerent Sexual Tension between him and Saxa, culminating in him losing his virginity to her on his 18th birthday in the Season 2 finale... maybe. The whole scene is somewhat ambiguous about how serious they really got, but it's undeniable that the two are quite attracted to each other.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father Asbjørn died in an accident when he was a young child.
  • Enemy Eats Your Lunch: When he and Saxa run into each other in the diner halfway through Season 2, she trolls him by taking a bite out of the burger he was about to eat. He doesn't seem to mind at all if his goofy grin is any indication. The way she does it might have something to do with that.
  • Friendless Background: Didn't have friends before meeting Isolde.
  • Healing Factor: Magne gets bitten by Trym, but the wound on his arm heals in a matter of minutes.
  • Meaningful Name: In Norse Mythology, one of Thor's sons is called Magni.
  • Must Make Amends: After killing Vidar in battle, Magne goes to Fyor (who's been estranged from the Jutul all season) and offers Fyor the chance to fight to avenge Vidar. Fyor turns it down, partly because of his own complicated feelings about Vidar's death, partly because he recognizes Magne's attempt to be more about Magne's own guilt than Fyor's justice.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: When Magne is hit by a snowplow, the doctors can't find a single injury.
  • Super-Speed: After he gets his powers, Magne can run 100 meters in seven seconds, faster than the world record by 2.5 seconds.
  • Super-Strength: Magne also gains super strength, enabling him for example to move a car by himself.
  • Took a Level in Badass: His Super-Empowering probably doesn't count, but in his climactic fight with Vidar at the end of Season One, Magne summons lightning to end the fight. At the start of Season Two, Vidar explicitly notes this is a sign Magne is close to attaining his true power as Thor, and has become much more dangerous (especially since he did it without his hammer). Shortly after, Magne's strength and muscle mass increase dramatically, such that by the middle of Season Two, his rematch with Vidar is far more even.
  • Weather Manipulation: While he doesn't control it purposefully and it is instead fueled by strong emotions, Magne can make it rain and summon a thunderstorm with his newly obtained powers. He also can predict the weather.
  • What Have I Done: when he kills Vidar

    Laurits

Laurits Seier

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_2297.JPG

Portrayed by: Jonas Strand Gravli

Laurits is Magne's younger brother.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Laurits loves to mess with his brother and get on his nerves. For example, Laurits agrees to proofread Magne's essay, but completely rewrites it to make Magne look stupid.
  • Camp Gay: Steals his mother's old red blouse to wear it for the Spring Party, and is seen wearing even make up, than again, this is part of his trollish personality.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: Being both Magne's brother and Vidar's son complicates his life significantly.
  • Disappeared Dad: His father died in an accident when he was a young child.
  • Duality Motif: As of the Season 2 finale, his right eye is golden like a giant's, his left one blue like a god's.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Laurits does looks ghostly, something that is noticed by his peers at school: "you look a bit pale, that's unusual." Once he discovers he is Loki's reincarnation, and his behaviour becomes more and more bizzare, the contrast between his paleness and dark features is even more noticeable.
  • Emo Teen: Played with. While he often wears dark clothes, is a Deadpan Snarker, and is called an Emo by the other kids, he is not overly prone to invoked Wangst.
  • The Gadfly: Loves messing with his brother, and seemingly enjoys ruffling people's feathers.
  • Gay Guy Seeks Popular Jock: Played with. Laurits develops a crush on Fjor, but it is unreciprocated and Fjor falls in love with Gry.
  • Grade Skipper: Laurits skipped a few years ahead in school and now goes in the same class as Magne.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Vidar the Jotun is his father. . . which is supposed to be impossible, since Jotuns and humans can't procreate. Vidar believes fate was involved.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: You can basically flip a coin to decide if Laurits is going to help or hinder Magne at any given moment.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Seemingly desperate for love and acceptance from people besides Magne and Turid, especially romantic or paternal love. In his own words, he just "wants to be someone else's".
  • It Amused Me: He does some supremely dickish things to Magne — like changing Magne's sociology paper to make him sound like a fascist or texting him that their mom is in trouble and needs Magne's help to interrupt his hiking trip with Isolde — apparently just because he thinks Jerkass pranks like that are funny. The strongest evidence for Laurits being Loki, who operated at pretty much the exact same level.
  • Loners Are Freaks: In season 2 he starts to notice more and more how different he is from the rest of his family and even calls himself a freak.

    Gry

Gry Isungset

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_2296.JPG

Portrayed by: Emma Bones

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Fjor isn't as "bad" as this trope usually involves (though, being a centuries-old giant, in some ways he's actually far worse), but Gry still falls for him over nice, quiet, steady Magne.
  • Put on a Bus: Almost literally, as she and her mother leave Edda halfway through Season 2 after the death of Gry's father, with her outright telling Magne that she won't return.
  • Reluctant Love Interest: For both Magne and Fyor. She's significantly less reluctant towards Fyor, and eventually gives in to him.
  • Weirdness Censor: Despite seeing all the odd artifacts in Vidar's office, and the pictures of the Jutul family throughout history, she doesn't think anything particularly strange is going on. Even when she takes a picture, labeled "1899," showing all four Jutuls, she simply returns it to Fyor with a comment that amounts to "yeah, your family's kinda weird." This should have raised some kind of alarm bell.

    Fjor

Fjor Jutul

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_2283.jpg

Portrayed by: Herman Tømmeraas

  • Face–Heel Revolving Door: While the rest of his family is pretty straight-up evil, Fjor can't seem to decide where he wants to place his morals and loyalty.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Fjor grows tired of living a lie and just wants to be a normal kid like his fellow classmates.
  • Non-Action Guy: He's the only Jutul who doesn't own a personal Old World weapon, and while he can hold his own in unarmed combat, he usually tries to avoid physical confrontation whenever possible.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has an absolutely epic one when he realizes that Magne has successfully reforged Mjölnir, the world's most powerful weapon and the greatest threat to the giants.
  • Pretty Boy: He has delicate boyish looks, sculpted eyebrows and a thin face. He is called handsome In-Universe and is considered the most popular guy in the school.
  • Really 700 Years Old: It remains unknown how old he is exactly, but since he is a Jotun, he might well be several centuries old.
  • Take Up My Sword: He takes up Vidar's axe after the latter's death, together with his place as the head of the Jutul family.
  • Token Rich Student: He shares this with his sister Saxa, being the children of the head teacher and of the owner of the local factory.
  • Token Good Team Mate: Fjor is the only member of his family who doesn't look down on humans, tries to propose a diplomatic solution about the danger Magne represents for his family and he is even beaten by both his father and sister for befriending humans. [[spoiler:
Fjor: I don't wanna be perfect. I wanna be a good person.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Fjor becomes softer as he gets closer to humans and Gry. If this is here to stay is still unclear at the end of season 1.
    • Eventually subverted as of season 2 after Vidar's death.

    Saxa

Saxa Jutul

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_2286.jpg

Portrayed by: Theresa Frostad Eggesbø

  • Alpha Bitch: Saxa is very popular at school but also very arrogant.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Has a lot of it with Magne.
  • Hidden Depths: In Season 2, she proves herself to be a very ambitious and talented business woman. Too bad nobody appreciates her efforts for being a woman, a Jotun woman, at that.
  • Really 700 Years Old: It remains unknown how old she is exactly, but since she is a Jotun, she might well be several centuries old.
  • Token Rich Student: He shares this with her brother Fjor, being the children of the head teacher and of the owner of the local factory.
  • Villainous Crush: Has at least some level of attraction towards Magne, culminating in them sleeping together in the latter half of season 2.
  • We Can Rule Together: Makes such an offer to Magne in the Season 2 finale following her defeat in the ongoing inter-Jutul family conflict. Magne has none of it.

    Isolde

Isolde

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_2288.JPG

Portrayed by: Ylva Bjørkaas Thedin

Isolde is an environmentalist who investigates Jutul Industries A/S, believing that they are responsible for the pollution of the fjord.
  • Cassandra Truth: She's relentless in telling the people of Edda that the Jutuls are poisoning the town's environment, particularly its drinking water. It's pretty obvious to the viewer that she's right, but of course none of her fellow citizens believe her.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother died of cancer when she was a young child.
  • Nonconformist Dyed Hair: Part of her 'I don't give a damn what others think of me' style.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: The number one rule in Edda is "Don't mess with the Jutuls", but that doesn't stop Isolde from trying to prove their blatant disregard for environmental safety and protection.
  • Single Girl Seeks Most Popular Guy: She is in love with Saxa, who is the daughter of the head teacher and the richest family in Edda, and also very popular.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: She doesn't even make it through the first episode before being killed off by Vidar offscreen.

    Oscar

Oscar Bjornholt

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_2299.JPG

Portrayed by: Tani Dibasey

  • Class Clown: Oscar jokes around a lot and is generally often in a good mood.

    Iman

Iman Reza

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_2298.JPG

Portrayed by: Danu Sunth

Iman is a new student at Edda Secondary School.
  • All Work vs. All Play: Iman has this dynamic with Magne. He constantly calls her out on her using her powers to have fun or get free stuff, especially when they have to prepare for a serious battle against the Jotun. On her side, Iman tries to persuade Magne to be more relaxed and have some fun.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's briefly implied there's something going on with her, and she knows more about the hidden goings-on in town then she lets on. This is not elaborated upon in Season One, but appears to be setup for revelations in a future season. It is confirmed in Season 2 that she's another of the new godly avatars, seemingly of Freya.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Iman has a very eccentric personality and sometimes it seems like her mind wanders about other stuff.
  • Compelling Voice: Her godly power. She can command someone and compel them to obey, and they actually seem to enjoy it.
  • The Fashionista: Iman is very fashion-conscient. She often wears modern hairstyles and has a unusual dress-up code.
  • Fun Personified: She is very crackwise, tells jokes and has a rather carefree personality.
  • The Gadfly: She enjoys pushing Magne's buttons.
  • Proud Beauty: " Well, I have a lot of abilities. I am gifted, I'm smart, I'm beautiful and funny, If I do say so myself."
  • Skewed Priorities: Iman seems to care more about the fact she can get free stuff with her Compelling Voice than fighting the Jotun.

    Ran

Ran Jutul

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_2291.JPG

Portrayed by: Synnøve Macody Lund

Ran is the headteacher of Edda Secondary School, and the mother of Fjor and Saxa.
  • Cold Sniper: As the only ranged fighter of her family, Ran is a ridiculously skilled archer, capable of hitting a black bird in mid-flight, in the dark of night, from several hundred meters away, with her first shot.
  • Evil Is Sterile: Season 2 reveals that she's barren, which is undoubtedly one of the reasons she hates Laurits so much.
  • Hot Teacher: Ran is an attractive woman who has several admirers among the students. At the spring party, she even sleeps with two students.
  • Law of Inverse Fertility: Has never been able to conceive a child which is a big reason she hates Laurits, he represents everything she wishes she could have given Vidar but couldn’t.
  • Oh, Crap!: Just like Fjor besides her, Ran all but craps herself at the sight of a pissed-off Magne brandishing the actual reforged Mjölnir at them.
  • Really 700 Years Old: It remains unknown how old she is exactly, but since she is a Giant, she might well be several centuries old.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Being played by the 6'0 Synnøve Lund.
  • The Straight and Arrow Path: Her personal Old World weapon is a black war bow that she knows very well how to use.
  • Super-Strength: She destroys a table when she is arm wrestling with Magne.
  • Wicked Stepmother: To Laurits.

    Erik

Erik

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_2293.JPG

Portrayed by: Odd-Magnus Williamson

Erik is a teacher at Edda Secondary School, and Isolde's father.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Erik is genuinely nice and caring, and does his best to be supportive to Magne, but still ends up working against him many times. Because Erik doesn't know Magne is Thor and the Jutuls are giants, and probably wouldn't believe it if he did, he sees Magne as a troubled young man who needs help. . . even if he doesn't want it.
  • Teacher/Parent Romance: Erik starts to develop feelings for Magne and Laurits's mother.

Other citizens of Edda

    Vidar

Vidar Jutul

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_2300.JPG

Portrayed by: Gísli Örn Garðarsson

Vidar is the owner of Jutul Industries A/S, and the father of Fjor and Saxa.
  • Abusive Parents: Vidar beats up Fjor when he finds out that he urinated on Isolde's memorial. He is however less upset about the disrespectful act itself but rather about that this could reveal their family's secret.
  • Carpet of Virility: Has a glorious amount of chest hair that he isn't shy to put on display.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: He knowingly pollutes the fjord with his company but vehemently denies it and refuses to do something about it.
  • Older Than They Look: Even discounting the Really 700 Years Old business, Vidar doesn't look his given age of 52.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: He's an abusive father, openly misogynistic towards his wife and daughter, racist towards humans, and completely unconcerned with the environmental damage he's been causing for decades.
  • Really 700 Years Old: It remains unknown how old he is exactly, but since he is a Giant, he might well be several centuries old.
  • Super-Strength: Vidar is able to kill a reindeer with his bare hands.

    Turid

Turid Seier

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/turid_season_1.JPG

Portrayed by: Henriette Steenstrup

Turid is the mother of Magne and Laurits. She is an employee at Jutul Industries A/S.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Turid has a sharp tongue as a mother of two possible gods.
Laurits: Great, we get to live next to bums and drug dealers.
Turid: Maybe he can get you a job?
  • Parent with New Paramour: Turid gets very well along with Erik to the point that she invites him over for dinner.
  • Struggling Single Mother: Turid has shades of this. She can't afford a lot of new things for her sons, and she is anxious when Magne wants to write his paper criticizing Jutul because she can't afford to lose her job there, and is also scared that this will lead to Magne ending up in prison because of the dog incident. When Magne is eventually expelled from school, Turid becomes depressed and lies on the couch eating masses of chocolate. Laurits's comment to Magne implies that this isn't the first time that this happened.

    Wenche

Wenche

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_2295.PNG

Portrayed by: Eli Anne Linnestad

Wenche is a mysterious woman who provided Magne with his powers. She also works at the local supermarket.
  • Angel Unaware: It's not outright stated, but very heavily implied that she is also from the "Old World," like the Jutul and Magne himself. Given her association with Wotan (see below), she may well be Frigga, Odin's wife. One of the last shots of Season One implies she transformed into an eagle and flew away from Magne's battle with Vidar. Season two identifies her as a Volva, or seeress.
    • Frigga is the goddess of oracles.
  • Reduced to Dust: She crumbles to ash after Ran shoots her with her magic bow.
  • Super-Empowering: She brushes her hand over Magne's forehead, and the power of Thor is now his. Though when Magne finally makes the connection and asks her, she insists she only unlocked what was already within him. Iman states Wenche did the same for her.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Can turn into an eagle. Eagles are the holy bird of Frigga/Fricka.

    Wotan

Wotan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_2294_1.JPG

Portrayed by: Bjørn Sundquist

  • Angel Unaware: He's actually Odin, but most of the first two seasons is spent with him being unaware of this. Once Wenche passes her necklace on to him, he becomes a fully realized Odin, offering Magne his full support in the coming fight.
  • Meaningful Name: Odin is called "Wotan" in the other Germanic languages besides Old Norse.
