Season Three

Till Death Do Us Part

  • Ran is having problems dealing the stress of Magne having the new biggest stick on the block, so goes to the school counselor for some therapy. Even if she avoids talking about the Norse Mythology stuff, she's still hilariously blunt, and the poor high school counselor has no idea how to proceed.
Ran: I'm experiencing a tremendous fear of death. It happened after I was threatened.
    Counselor: I see.
Ran: It was one of our students. The same one who killed my husband.
    Counselor: ("Wait, what?" look)
Ran: He didn't die of a heart attack. But I don't want to involve the police.
    Counselor: ("Uh. . . okay. . ." look)
Ran: Anyway, now I'm trying to get a handle on it. I'm giving him better grades, so he stops threatening me and my family with a dangerous weapon that he carries around with him.
Counselor: ("Wait, WHAT? One of our students is armed?" look)
Ran: I also feel very alienated from my children. Maybe it's because they're not mine. But the world can't know that. I don't know, but. . .
Counselor: ("I am so confused" look) Yeah. . . (flounders for words)
Ran: Where would you like to start?

Losing My Religion

  • For some reason, the school counselor has agreed to continue seeing Ran after the above.
    Ran: It's Magne. Again.
    Counselor: Magne?
Ran: He's now my daughter's boyfriend. He can't be good for her. He's made death threats to me and my son. That's what I was talking about last time. My fear of death.
    Counselor: Yes.
Ran: I can see a change in her. We kept her as a slave for a year. A form of punishment in our family. But after Magne came into the picture, she's been more determined. More driven. But she has gone completely off the rails. She's unruly.
Counselor: (beat while trying to process) If you have kept your own daughter as a slave. . . which isn't strictly. . . legal. . . then perhaps it's a good thing for her to have a boyfriend?
Ran: ("does not compute" face) No.
