The characters of the manga and animes series Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok:
Beware of unmarked SPOILERS!
Main Characters
The trickster god of Norse Mythology, Loki was for unknown reasons banished to the human world in the body of a ten year old boy by Odin. Loki runs the Enjaku Detective Agency to deal with the strange and supernatural, but his real desire is to return to Asgard and find out why he was exiled in the first place.
- Anti Anti Christ: Doesn't want to cause Ragnarok no matter what fate says.
- Celibate Hero:
- Other than his affair with Skuld in the anime, Loki doesn't seem interested in a relationship. Though, that's probably because he already has a wife.
- He's in love with Mayura in the manga, but he's oblivious to his feelings. It's Lampshaded.
- Chick Magnet: Whether as his adult form or his younger form, he attracts a crowd. An episode in the anime attributed it to his "adorable smile".
- Older Than They Look: Due to Odin's curse, this grown man has to walk around in a child's body.
- Kill It with Water: Being a fire god and all, he doesn't like water.
- The Nicknamer: Calls Narugami, "Narukami". This is a Lost in Translation bit of humor as "kaminari" means "thunder" in Japanese.
- Noble Fugitive: Hiding out in Japan because of Odin's unjustly persecution and dodging assassins.
- Not a Morning Person: If sufficiently early, then it is impossible to wake him up.
- Really 700 Years Old: He's a lot older then the ten or so years he appears.
Mayura Daidouji is an ordinary high school student who is drawn into Loki's detective agency, as well as the mysterious world of Loki and the Norse gods and goddesses. She joins the agency as Loki's self-proclaimed assistant, but she is unaware that everyone she meets is a god, goddess, or someone Norse-related, though in the manga Mayura has a sharper sense than in the anime. She seems to have feelings for Loki.
- Agent Mulder: She'll believe anything is a potential "Fushigi Mystery".
- Agent Scully: Despite her intense interest in the paranormal, she doesn't believe in gods or spirits.
- Catchphrase: "Fushigi Mystery."
- Cloudcuckoolander: Her daydreams about mysteries are weirder than the genuinely supernatural things happening around her.
- Damsel in Distress: Captive by every villain at one point or another.
- Forceful Kiss: Twice, including a manga-only one. Once by Heimdall, and then again by Loki. For the former, Mayura shrugged the incident off, much to Loki's annoyance. For the latter, Mayura slapped Loki in surprise.
- Oblivious to Love: Oblivious to Freyr's feelings for her.
- Ordinary High-School Student: Averted, she really is ordinary.
- Pimped-Out Dress: When she got possessed by Odin in Episode 15.
- The Pollyanna: Nothing gets her down. Of course this may be because she doesn't have a clue of what's going on.
- Ship Tease: With Loki, Yamino, Freyr, Heimdall, and a bit with Narugami.
- Unfazed Everyman: Played with. In any other situation she would be this except she often doesn't know all of the strange things happening.
- Yamato Nadeshiko: According to Freyr, she's a "traditional japanese beauty". She is closer to this in the manga.
Supporting Characters
Loki's butler and assistant, Yamino has a fondness for cooking and mail-order items. He is revealed to be Jormundgand, Loki's second son.
- Non-Indicative Name: The Japanese word for dragon isn't all that fitting for part of the name of the world snake.
Disguised as a transfer student in Mayura's class, Narugami is really the Norse god of thunder and has been sent to kill Loki, but decides not to only because he hasn't found a reason to kill Loki yet. He is often called "Narukami" by Loki. A running gag is that Narugami ends up having a multiple of different part-time jobs.
- Calling Your Attacks: "ROAR Mjöllnir!" and the more comical "Galactic Onion Cut!"
- Wooden Katanas Are Even Better: Justified: it's freakin' Mjöllnir in disguise!
A Shikigami spirit conjured up by Loki.
- Invisible to Normals
- Team Pet
- Reluctant Monster: Originally intended to be a frightening spirit; Loki got a floating child-like wad of cotton candy instead. Nevertheless welcomed as part of the family.
The watchman of Norse Mythology, Heimdall is sent by Odin to kill Loki, but it's more of a personal vendetta — Heimdall seeks revenge against Loki for stealing his right eye, and he will not rest until vengence is his.
- Absurdly Sharp Claws: The reason he's always wearing gloves.
- Arch-Enemy: Considers Loki to be this. In an omake, he's seen writing a song devoted to his hatred of Loki and between classes he thinks about how much Loki sucks. On a less amusing note, if he and Loki were to actually duke it out, both would die.
- The Corrupter: He states that as a child, his only power is to create darkness in people's hearts.
- The Chessmaster: He does a good deal of this during his introduction, however he turns out to be pawn.
- Creepy Child: While he looks like a small child, he did create a bunch of murder games to screw with Loki.
- Conspicuous Gloves: Heimdall constantly wears a pair of very obvious gloves. The reason for this is to cover up his claws.
- Death of the Old Gods: Discussed. Hoenir pretty much says it's time for Freya, Frey and Heimdall to retire.
- Eye Scream: Downplayed. When we get to see what's under his bangs, all there is is a closed eyelid. Though, the scar over the eyelid implies that however it was removed, it was not pretty.
- He also tries to stab Loki's eye out.
- Forceful Kiss: Heimdall did this on Mayura early into the story. Not because he had feelings for her, but only to screw with Loki's head. Which worked— to the point that Loki seems quite a bit jealous when Mayura shrugs it off in the manga.
- Louis Cypher: Averted. Heimdall goes by the alias Kazumi Higashiyama.
- Manipulative Bastard: He's messed around with events to try and kill Loki. In episode eighteen, when Loki briefly assumes his personality, even Heimdall was a little creeped out.
- Modernized God: Heimdall, despite his overly serious character appears to have adjusted alright to modern day. He participates in activities such as cram school and dresses like a normal kid in stark contrast to Loki and Frey's rather formal attire.
- Morality Pet: Heimdall is ruthless when going after Loki and doesn't care if people get killed. However, he will go on shopping trips with Frey and even stopped going after Mayura after Frey decided he liked her.
- Sleep-Mode Size: He's not an actual child, he just looks like one since he was sent to Midgard.
- The Unfettered: Heimdall has said it himself he will do whatever it takes to kill Loki, no matter how evil the means. Subverted later when he stops targeting Mayura because Frey likes her.
- Villains Out Shopping: for reasons unknown, he takes singing lessons, piano lessons and attends cram school. Also, more literally, Frey has a tendency to drag him into shopping sprees.
Freyr is a mysterious thief who falls in love with Mayura at first sight. He works with Heimdall and has a robotic pig named Gullinbursti. Freyr came to the human world in search of his sister Freya, who was banished to the human world like Loki.
- Big Brother Instinct: He doesn't want Freya anywhere ''near'' Loki.
- Love at First Sight: Gets smitten with Mayura upon bumping into her.
- New Transfer Student: Only in Episode 11, where Freyr joined Mayura's school in order to join the Mystery Society so it wouldn't get abolished. Hilarity Ensues when Freyr attempts to help her out, but he ends up getting more than he bargains for — including mistaking Narugami and Koutarou as love rivals for Mayura's affection.
- The Nicknamer: Calls Mayura "Yamato Nadeshiko."
Reiya is a child who comes to the detective agency to solve an unusual mystery surrounding her. In the manga, Reiya hires Loki on the mystery her nightmares of her deceased sister, while in the anime, she hires Loki on the mystery of her mansion. She develops a crush on Loki. Reiya is revealed to be Freya put into a child form. Unlike Loki, Reiya does not have any memories of being Freya. Reiya becomes Freya when wearing the necklace Brisingamen, as well as when she becomes frightened or jealous of the female attention Loki receives.
- Last of Her Kind: In the anime, Reiya is the Sole Survivor of the Ohshima family.
Freyr's sister and the goddess of beauty, fertility, and love. After begging Odin for Loki's return, Freya was punished by being exiled to the human form in the body of a child and without her memories — that child being Reiya. As a result, Freya is vengeful against Loki for this, but in spite of this, her feelings for Loki are just as strong as ever.
One of the three Norn Sisters. In the manga, they appear to have a second agenda differing from that of Odin's. In the anime, they are sent to kill Loki. Urd is seemingly the leader of the three sisters and enchantments are her forte.
- Cool Big Sis: To Skuld and Verdandi.
One of the three Norn Sisters. In the manga, they appear to have a second agenda differing from that of Odin's. In the anime, they are sent to kill Loki. Verdandi is the second eldest of the sisters and works with dark alchemy.
The youngest of the three Norn Sisters. In the manga, they appear to have a second agenda differing from that of Odin's. In the anime, they are sent to kill Loki. Skuld has a demon as a familiar. She has feelings for a rather oblivious Loki in the manga, while in the anime it's implied that the two might have or might have not have had an affair in the past.
A talking dog that is revealed to be the wolf Fenrisulfr, Loki's eldest son. In a Running Gag, Fenrir acts sweet towards Loki and bossy towards Yamino.
- Canis Major: His real form is kaiju level huge.
- Savage Wolves: He is ruthless towards his father's enemies and bullies his brother Yamino. The only reason he's not like this all the time is because he acts sweet around Loki.
A mysterious pink haired girl who has a connection to Loki and seeks for his demise. She is revealed to be Loki's only daughter — the goddess of the underworld and a half-corpse. Her role in the manga and anime differ; in the manga, Hel only wants Loki to stay with her in the underworld forever, while in the anime, Hel's reason for her desire for Loki's death is because Odin led her to believe that her father and brothers all abandoned her and hated her.
- Tranquil Fury: In the anime, Hel hates Loki because it is implied that Odin convinced her that her father Loki and her brothers all hated her and left her behind.
The King of the Gods who seeks Loki's demise.
- Body Snatcher: In the Manga, Balder makes Odin suffer a case of this... He does not get better.
Other Characters
Misao: I don't give a damn what you do to me, do you hear me? Know that to protect his daughter's life, any father would sacrifice his own!
Mayura's father. He is protective of her and dislikes her constant fascination with the occult, as well as her friendship with Loki. Unlike Mayura, her father has a sixth sense and is aware that there is something strange and supernatural about Loki.
- Open-Minded Parent: Enough that he'll let Mayura work at a detective agency run by a seeming ten year old boy. (It did take some convincing on Loki's part, though.)
A wealthy and snooty classmate of Mayura's. In the manga, Koutarou — nicknamed Kou by Loki — proves to be a valued asset and as great as a detective as Loki, who becomes friends with him. However, his role differs in the anime, where he hangs out with Loki and company and has several meetings with the enigmatic Hel.
A significant character to the sequel manga series and a new character appearing in the end of the last episode of the anime. Spica is a good-natured but clumsy girl who becomes a maid at the detective agency. She is revealed to be Angrboda, Loki's mistress and the mother of Jormundgand, Fenrisulfr, and Hel.
- Cute Mute: While cursed by Odin, but even when the curse is lifted, Spica remains a pretty darn cute Quiet One.
- Crash-Into Hello: Loki's first meeting with Spica in the manga.
- The Reveal: Spica is Loki's mistress Angrboda.
A manga-only character. Utgard-Loki is the former life of Loki's — the King of Utgard, Land of the Giants. He holds half of Loki's power. It appears he has a strange obsession over Spica.
