Malthus Church
Chihiro Kamina
Voiced by: Yūki Kaji (Japanese), Orion Pitts (English)
- Big Sleep: Chihiro spent five months is a coma during the Great Collapse, while all the other victims awoke within a week.
- Childhood Friends: with Yuri.
- Childhood Friend Romance: with Yuri.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Something dark happened to him years ago, and it still haunts him even today.
- Forgotten First Meeting: He and Yuri were childhood friends, but the incident years ago made him forget all about her.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: This is how Chihiro shows he has awakened his powers. All vessels of the Heroic Lineage have glowing red eyes when using their powers.
- Self-Made Orphan: Kakihara seems convinced Chihiro killed his own father in self-defense. The truth is that his father committed suicide when he almost killed his son.
- Sins of Our Fathers: Yuri mentions his mother is the one responsible for the current situation.
- These Hands Have Killed: Chihiro feels this way when he kills Kotetsu's possessed father.
Kotetsu Doumiyouji

- Heroes Prefer Swords: He trained kendo alongside Chihiro, and his vessel powers manifest as a blade.
- The Lancer: Being his oldest, and possibly only friend, he serves as this for Chihiro.
- You Killed My Father: Develops a grudge on Jun for being the one who opened the gate that turned his father into a monster.
- Ship Tease: It's light and subtle, but he and Tsubaki are quite fond of each other.
Isshin Kakihara
Voiced by: Hiroki Tochi (Japanese), Robert McCollum (English)
- Coat Cape: Wears his coat this way, for no apparent reason beyond looking cool.
- Intrepid Reporter: Whenever he's not being nosy, he can be quite a good investigator.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While at first he seemed like an unreasonable jackass towards Chihiro, in the end he just had a lot of resentment within him and ended up giving his life to save Chihiro.
- Never My Fault: He decides it wasn't his fault Tsubasa turned into Aero, so he blames Chihiro instead.
- Parental Abandonment: His parents committed suicide when he was young.
- Taking the Bullet: Protects Chihiro from Kaburagi's blade at the cost of his own life, telling him to live for all those who have perished.
Shoko Hanashima
Voiced by: Ai Kayano (Japanese), Lindsay Seidel (English)
- Blind Obedience: Seems to follow Dux's commands without concern for anything else.
- Curtains Match the Windows: Reddish hair and eyes of the same color.
- Mrs. Exposition: Gives some important knowledge to Chihiro, Kotetsu and Isshin.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: Wants to save the world, even if it means destroying Tokyo.
Inuki Akaya
Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa (Japanese), Eric Vale (English)
- Anime Hair: His red hair looks rather improbable and it stays even in familiar form.
- Combat Medic: A doctor who also has heroic vessel powers.
- Foil: To Jun. He has red hair while Jun is blue, he wears normal glasses while Jun always wears sunglasses and he dresses as a doctor while Jun looks more like a biker.
- Nice Guy: A genuinely nice and polite man who gives Chihiro advice.
- Meaningful Name: Inuki means dog and his familiar form looks like a giant werewolf.
Koume Sakiyama
Voiced by: Aoi Yūki (Japanese), Monica Rial (English)
- Battleaxe Nurse: Gives that impression with her least than desirable bedside manners.
- Enhanced Archaic Weapon: Her blood armament is a whip with a pointed tip like a devil's tail.
- Eyepatch of Power: Wears a medical eyepatch for an undescribed reason, and it even turns red when using her powers.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While her manners leave something to be desired, she truly cares about Inuki and his wellbeing.
- Over-the-Shoulder Carry: Koume is seen doing this with a man much taller than she is.
- Zettai Ryouiki: Her socks go past her knees up to her thighs, making her a Grade A.
AVAL Science Foundation
Yuri Shiraki
Voiced by: Misato Fukuen (Japanese), Amber Lee Connors (English)
- Anti-Villain: She doesn't seem to enjoy causing harm, and would rather not fight Chihiro, but she feels it's necessary to save the world.
- Battle Ballgown: Her vessel powers manifest as a long skirt that gives this impression.
- Childhood Friends: With Chihiro.
- Childhood Friend Romance: Again, with Chihiro.
- Coat Cape: She wears her coat this way.
- Friendly Enemy: Despite technically opposing Chihiro, she genuinely likes him and wishes circumstances were different.
Jun Aoi
Voiced by: Jun'ichi Suwabe (Japanese), Ian Sinclair (English)
- Antagonist in Mourning: He's genuinely sad when Inuki dies, holding a rose in his honor.
- Badass Fingersnap: This is how he activates gates.
- Cool Shades: Always with sunglasses, and they even turn red when using his powers.
- Foil: To Inuki. He has dark blue hair to Inuki's red, he wears sunglasses while Inuki wears normal glasses and he dresses in a blue leather jacket while Inuki wears a doctor's outfit. Their names even mean Blue and Red.
- Hell-Bent for Leather: He appears to wear a leather jacket.
- In the Back: Kaburagi stabs him in the back when he tries to kill Chihiro.
- We Used to Be Friends: He and Inuki used to be close friends, until circumstances drove them to opposing sides.
Haru Minakami
Voiced by: Takuma Terashima (Japanese), Stephen Fu (English)
Jun's most subordinate and friend of Akira's.- Anti-Villain: He doesn't seem to hold any malicious intentions and merely follows Jun's and Grumman's orders.
- Big Brother Worship: Has a very strong admiration for Jun and sees him as a strong example of manliness, not unlike an ideal cool big brother.
- Dynamic Entry: Haru enters the fight by punching Koume in the face. She's unamused about it.
- Naïve Newcomer: Compared to Jun and Yuri, he clearly has very little knowledge about their group, or his own powers.
Kaburagi Kark
Voiced by: Shin-ichiro Miki (Japanese), Daman Mills (English)
- Cool Mask: His vessel powers give him one.
- Hero Killer: Has the highest kill count before the final battle, since he killed Marie, Kakihara, Jun, Akira and Haru.
- In the Back: He usually stabs his victims this way, as Marie, Isshin and Jun find out.
- Sharp-Dressed Man: Wears a full suit, hat and scarf.
- Sinister Scythe: His familiar wields one and uses it to impale Marie from behind.
- Wicked Cultured: He's a pianist who constantly uses music metaphors alongside his love of death.
Chiyu
Voiced by: Chiwa Saitō (Japanese), Sarah Wiedenheft (English)
- Wham Line: Not her, but Grumman when he calls her Mitsuki, as in, Kamina's supposedly dead mother. She's a clone.
Guardian State
Tsubaki Manazaru
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (Japanese), Jad Saxton (English)
- Familiar: Hers looks more like a youkai than the previously human-like defenders like Eiko and Tsubasa.
- The Nicknamer: Refers to Kotetsu as 'Kotchan' and she also gives nicknames to others.
Marie Kurokami
Voiced by: Yuu Kobayashi (Japanese), Katelyn Barr (English)
- Fair Cop: A police woman with waist-length hair and a nice body.
- Jousting Lance: Her blood armament is a large lance.
- Nice Girl: She's polite and reasonable, trying to motivate Isshin into stop blaming Chihiro over things he probably didn't have any control of.
- This Is Gonna Suck: Has this expression when Isshin surprises her at a bar.
Julia Ichijo
Voiced by: Yui Horie (Japanese), Tia Ballard (English)
- Braids of Action: She has part of her hair in a braid to her left however she has the rest of it flow naturally.
- Lady of War: Her blood armament is a bow.
- Macross Missile Massacre: She can release an arrow into the air and have it break apart into dozens of arrows that strike a single target multiple times.
Suruga Juumonji

Akira Harabuki

- Taking the Bullet: Protects Haru from Kaburagi's scythe at the cost of her own life.

- Ambiguously Evil: Her true motives are a mystery, all that is clear is that the destruction of Tokyo and the Second Great Collapse will occur one way or another.
- Domino Mask: Has one that covers her eyes.
Eiko Morizono/Cerdid
Voiced by: Tomoko Nakamura (Japanese), Skyler McIntosh (English)
- Pointy Ears: Has a pair of elf-like ears, although what she actually is is unknown.
- Pretty in Mink: Wears a furry hoodie, that actually doesn't cover much beyond her shoulders.
Tsubasa Tachikaze/Aero
Voiced by: Hisako Tōjō (Japanese), Amanda Lee (English)
- Alliterative Name: Tsubasa Tachikaze
- Harping on About Harpies: Aero's true form looks like a multicolored harpy.
- Morality Pet: She's the one who keeps Isshin relatively grounded.
Van Drail
Voiced by: Nobuyuki Hiyama (Japanese), Christopher Wehkamp (English)
- In the Hood: Wears a dark hood all the time.
- Obviously Evil: Wears dark purple, is full of tattoos and piercings and is always standing in the shadows. He's the most blatantly evil person in Shiraki's group.
Grumman A. Shiraki
Voiced by: Sho Hayami (Japanese), Kent Williams (English)
- Abusive Parents: When Yuri attempts to betray their group, he lashes out at her and repeatedly hits her with his cane.
- Ambiguously Evil: His end goal isn't really known, but he seems to care about his daughter Yuri.
- An Arm and a Leg: Lost his right arm in the same incident provoked by Chihiro's mother Mitsuki.
